Validation Of Finite Element Couple Level-Set Volume Of Fluid Method For Plunging Breaking Wave Prediction, Graham Hubbard May 2020

Validation Of Finite Element Couple Level-Set Volume Of Fluid Method For Plunging Breaking Wave Prediction, Graham Hubbard

Theses and Dissertations

Predictive capability of computational fluid dynamics simulations for the prediction of plunging breaking wave is assessed. Laminar flow simulations are performed for dam break, solitary wave run up on a slope and flow over a submerged bump using OpenFOAM, a finite volume solver with volume-ofluid (VoF) interface capturing method, and Proteus, a finite element solver with coupled level-set/ volume-ofluid (CLSVoF) methods. CLSVoF predicts wave elevation before the plunge, and primary and secondary plunger shapes better than VoF in all the cases. The primary limitation in the simulation is the airflow, which results in diffused plunger tips in VoF simulations, and …

Algorithmic Assembly Of Nanoscale Structures, Austin Luchsinger May 2020

Algorithmic Assembly Of Nanoscale Structures, Austin Luchsinger

Theses and Dissertations

The development of nanotechnology has become one of the most significant endeavors of our time. A natural objective of this field is discovering how to engineer nanoscale structures. Limitations of current top-down techniques inspire investigation into bottom-up approaches to reach this objective. A fundamental precondition for a bottom-up approach is the ability to control the behavior of nanoscale particles. Many abstract representations have been developed to model systems of particles and to research methods for controlling their behavior. This thesis develops theories on two such approaches for building complex structures: the self-assembly of simple particles, and the use of simple …

Individual Difference As A Factor In Ethical Decision-Making, Dan W. Reagan Jr. May 2020

Individual Difference As A Factor In Ethical Decision-Making, Dan W. Reagan Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the dominance of modernistic ethics in counseling there has been a growing development of postmodern thought. There has been a growing understanding the limitations of ethical codes and purely rational thinking in ethical decision-making. Part of this new paradigm is an appreciation for the role of affect and context in the decision-making process. A post-modern approach to counseling ethics seems to be increasingly accepted among persons working in the social service field but little research has been attempted to evaluate the implications of such a change in training and practice. This study attempted to explore possible relationships between individual …

Organizational Effects Of Exogenous Corticosterone On Vocal Development In A Wild Parrot, Rory Eggleston May 2020

Organizational Effects Of Exogenous Corticosterone On Vocal Development In A Wild Parrot, Rory Eggleston

Theses and Dissertations

Songbirds learn songs during a plastic phase in vocal development, similar to human vocal babbling. Research has focused on male song learning, a process influenced by gonadal steroids. Like humans, parrots are very plastic vocal learners and both sexes learn vocalizations throughout life. It is unclear how the endocrine system mediates environmental information with developing phenotypes in parrots. Corticosterone (CORT) is a sex-neutral hormone that can affect cognitive development, but its role in vocal development has not been experimentally tested in wild parrots. I quantified vocal babbling from nestling Green-rumped Parrotlets (Forpus passerinus) recorded in Venezuela. Nestlings received oral CORT-oil …

Topography Estimation Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Yelbir Kazhykarim May 2020

Topography Estimation Using Particle Swarm Optimization, Yelbir Kazhykarim

Theses and Dissertations

The Earth’s Vertical Gravity Gradient (VGG) can be used to map seafloor topography but presents a challenging inverse problem. A promising approach is forward modeling, in which one searches over a set of candidate topographies and selects the one whose predicted VGG best fits the observed one. The main bottleneck here is solving the associated high-dimensional and non-linear optimization problem. Yang et al (2018) demonstrated a method in which the topography is parametrized by heights of mass elements on a rectangular grid and the ≈ 104 dimensional optimization problem is tackled with simulated annealing (SA). We propose a computationally much …

Gender Dynamics In Charreria Mexicana, Karen Melissa Flores Tavizon May 2020

Gender Dynamics In Charreria Mexicana, Karen Melissa Flores Tavizon

Theses and Dissertations

This research and analysis about the experiences of women in charrería show the pervasive negotiation of needs that they engage as practicing in an Escaramuza Charra. Inside this study, it is introduced the term Sisterhood Paradox, used to describe the struggle that represents the Escaramuza’s constant collective performance, in comparison to charros, but that paradoxically serves a tool of resistance of charra women inside this patriarchal institution. In this piece of work, it is also argued that women in charrería, in many cases, are not aware of the subordinate position they occupy and in an unconscious way function as agents …

Navigating The Glass Ladder: A Qualitative Exploration Of The Challenges Women Leaders Experience Throughout The Process Of Promotion In The Manufacturing Industry, Jamie Birdwell

Theses and Dissertations

As the presence of women in the workplace continues to increase and significant strides have been undertaken to ensure fair and equitable treatment of women in industry, a considerable gap remains in the representation of women in leadership roles in male-dominated industries (Saraçoğlu, Memiş, Voyvoda, & Kızılırmak, 2018). Gender discrimination brought on by stereotypical gender beliefs regarding “men’s work” versus “women’s work” is pervasive in the male-dominated industry of manufacturing (Levine, 2009; Massey, 2014; Sweida & Reichard, 2013). This study explored the experiences of women as they navigated promotion in the manufacturing sector. Through the lens of role congruity theory, …

Toward The Development Of A Practitioner-Friendly Delay Tolerance Assessment And Treatment For Typically-Developing Children, Kaitlynn Mary Gokey May 2020

Toward The Development Of A Practitioner-Friendly Delay Tolerance Assessment And Treatment For Typically-Developing Children, Kaitlynn Mary Gokey

Theses and Dissertations

Delay discounting is the decrease in the value of a reinforcer as a function of the delay to the delivery of the reinforcer. Individuals who exhibit steep delay discounting are commonly referred to as ‘impulsive’ and are at a greater risk of behavior problems such as poor academic performance, addiction, and excessive risk-taking. One effective intervention is a concurrent activity, in which the individual must complete a task demand during the waiting period. Rules and rulegoverned behavior also play a critical role in improving delay discounting rates across populations, and may be used as an intervention to promote self-controlled responses. …

Microgravity Emergency Medical Containment System – A Concept Of Architecture, Prototyping, And Usability Research, Keith Elliott Crisman

Theses and Dissertations

Exploration is intrinsic to human nature but is well understood to be accompanied by inherent risks to the explorer. This is particularly evident in the exploration of extreme environments such as long-duration space habitation; in which risk is increased due in particular to the distance from assistance, services, and replenishment of consumables. One of the major risks to extreme environment survivability is lack of access to emergency medical care. This risk is further amplified in the microgravity environment where terrestrial non-life-threatening conditions can become life threatening due to lack of next-level-care capabilities. The question posed within this research asks, ‘What …

Symbiosis And Immunity At The Tri-Kingdom Interface, Stephen Alexander Lazar May 2020

Symbiosis And Immunity At The Tri-Kingdom Interface, Stephen Alexander Lazar

Theses and Dissertations

The rise in global sea-surface temperatures drastically and adversely impacts coral reefs worldwide through coral bleaching, diseases, and subsequent coral mortality. Corals become bleached by the expulsion of endo-symbiotic dinoflagellates, which reduces host pigmentation. Coral bleaching can also lead to enhanced disease prevalence immediately after thermal-stress and during the associated re-uptake of symbiotic dinoflagellates. This aspect has yet to be thoroughly investigated. A model system is necessary to study the relationships between symbiosis and disease that has sufficient flexibility to include a variety of host symbionts as well as pathogens. For this dissertation project, Exaiptasia pallida was investigated as a …
