The Postglacial Sedimentology Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Edward Callender

The present sedimentary environment of Devils Lake, a Closed brackish lake in northeastern North Dakota, was investigated, and changes in the Holocene lacustrine environment are interpreted. Sediment samples from Main Bay of Devils Lake were analyzed for their physical, chemical and mineral ogical properties. Analytical data on surface sedimer.t were used to delineate the present sedimentary environment, while data on sediment from three cores were used to reconstruct the Holocene lacustrine history.

The dominant physical processes affecting the surface sediment are wave action and intermittent sediment influx through Big Coulee. The dominant chemical process, precipitation of calcium carbonate, is a …

Mechanical Effects Of Acoustic Transients On Tobacco Mosaic Virus, Philip Edward Hamrick

The mechanical breakage of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) due to the action of acoustic transients has been investigated. The acoustic transients were produced by transient heating of a Prussian blue dye solution (attenuation coefficient of 1000 per cm) when a ruby laser light (20 x 10⁶ watts) was incident on the dye surface. A quartz piezoelectric transducer was used to determine the amplitude and form of the acoustic wave. A Comparison Study Of The Ecological Distribution Of Small Mammals In Southwestern North Dakota, Lenette K. Svihovec

The objectives of this study were to survey the small mammal fauna from eight habitats typical of southwestern North Dakota and to determine the habitat preference of the species found. Fifteen species were collected and grouped according to their occurrence in areas of varying vegetation densities.

Four species (Reithrodontomys megalotis, Microtus penn- sylvanicus, Sorex cinereus, and Eutamias minimus) were collected in dense vegetation. R. megalotis and M. oennsylvanicus were most abundant and exhibited preferences for cottonwood bottomlands and lowland meadows. S_. cinereus was also limited to lowland meadows, while Eh minimus occurred primarily in brushy coulees.

Since a basement membrane is present on all blood vessels and also on all tissues of ectodermal origin, the blood vessels of the central nervous system should have two basement membranes, one related to the blood vessel, the other related to the nervous tissue. Also, the tissue space usually bordering on the basement membranes should in the central nervous system separate the two. In the adult brain and spinal cord, however, only one basement membrane and no tissue space surround the blood vessels of the central nervous system. Metazoan Parasites Of The Muskrat, Ondatra Zibethica Cinnamominus, From The English Coulee Grand Forks County, North Dakota, David A. Boyd Iv

During the fall of 1966 and the spring of 1967, 55 muskrats were trapped along the reaches of the English Coulee, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. These muskrats were necropsied and all ectoparasites and endoparasites collected. The parasites were stained and identified and the number of worms counted to discern the parasite burden.

Eight species of parasites were found. The only ectoparasite encountered was Laelaps multispinosus (89.09 per cent incidence). Four species of trematodes were identified as Echinostoma revolutum (34.54 per cent), Quinqueserialis quinqueserialis (47.27 per cent), Notocotylus urbanensis (41.81 per cent), and Plagiorchis proximus (14.54 per cent). Hematological comparisons were made on the Uinta ground squirrel (Citellus armatus) trapped at different altitudes and during vari ou s stages of seasonal activity in 1965 and 1966. Hematological variation due to sex, sexual activity and body weight were also analyzed. Ground squirrels were secured from the Mt. Timpanogos area near Provo, Utah County, Utah. Erythrocyte count, hematocrit, total blood hemoglobin, mean erythrocyte volume, mean erythrocyte hemoglobin and reticulocyte counts were measured using standard procedures; banding patterns of hemoglobin and serum proteins wer e determined by means of electrophoresis with polyacetate strips.

Due to a lack of taxonomic and distributional information concerning the Common Crow Corvus brachryhynchos Brehm inhabiting the Great Basin of North America, Johnston (1961) in one of the most recent revisions on crows, was unable to include this area in his work. Between 1965 and 1967, field trips were taken throughout the Great Basin to secure specims, and to determine to what extent the area was being utilized by crows. Hemoglobin, from the erythrocytes of adult and fetal pigs, was isolated and analyzed by carboxymethylcellulose column chromatography and electrophoresis on polyacetate. These techniques demonstrate the existence of four fetal components (F0, F1A, F1B, F1C) and two adult components (A0, A1) based on their elution pH values and electrophoretic mobilities. The shift from-fetal to adult forms is initiated sometime between eight weeks after birth and one year. The change is not completed until sometime after one year and the major fetal forms (F0, F1A) maintain a 15% level in a mature adult. This report is in contrast with the results of …

An ecological study was conducted at Cascade Springs, Wasatch county, Utah from August 1965, to June 1967. The algae and aquatic moss species were determined and ecological information about these organisms was obtained. Physical data were also collected: bicarbonates, carbonates, free carbon dioxide, hydroxides, oxygen, pH, and temperature. The physical environment of the water was found to be very constant. Tests taken at the different study sites were consistently similar, not only during each day, but all year around. No great variation of any kind was found in the water. Predation by thrips was referred to as early as 1882 when Pergande discussed their habits. Later, Plank (1936) found Leptothrips mali (Fitch) to be predaceous on lepidopterous eggs, and Sharp (1938) cited it as a being a predator of the pecan nut caseborer, Acrobasis caryae Grote. Maturation of the collagen fiber involves aggregation of the tropocollagen molecule through increasing numbers of inter- and intramolecular crosslinkages. Maturation is reflected in the transition of soluble to insoluble collagen. An experimental model, lathyrism, induced by beta-aminopropionitrile (BAPN), alters the normal collagen bonding and produces an increase of the saline-soluble collagen. Conflicting reports have been made concerning bond alteration of the insoluble fiber by BAPN, reverting the collagen to a more soluble state. Daily movements of two adjacent microtine populations were correlated with the utilization of various types of microenvironments. Animals were trapped, marked and released on a gridded area which transected three ecological zones, a riparian woodland, an edge, and an old field. Average distance traveled between recaptures and standard diameters were used to estimate activity patterns and home ranges of the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus, and the red-backed vole, Clethrionomys gapperi. Microtus restricted their activity to grassy habitats while Clethrionomys remained in the woodland. There was no ecological overlap between the two species. One species of lichen from each of three different families (Collema wyomingensis , Caloplaca elegans (Link)T. Fries, and Parmelia molliuscula Ach.) was studied to determine whether or not these lichens can fix atmospheric nitrogen. Samples of these three lichens were collected in the early spring of 1967. Samples of each species were placed in 20-ml glass tubes which contained 5 ml of glass wool saturated with 0.5 M nitrogen-free Hoaglands nutrient solution. The reduviid bug, Triatoma infestans, was Investigated as a possible vector of Rauscher murine leukemia, since these insects are closely associated in nature as inhabitants of rodent burrows.

The effect of triatomid ingestion of leukemic blood was tested by maintaining insects fed on leukemic mice for various periods, and then injecting whole-insect homogenates into test mice. The viremic period for mice injected with Rauscher virus was determined by inoculating a large group of mice and sacrificing them over an 18-day period. The study consisted of a comparison of two methods of teaching the elementary backstroke to beginning swimmers. Students of the University of North Dakota "Upward Bound" project volunteered as experimental subjects. The instructor pre-tested the students to see that those participating fell in the beginning swimming classification. The students were taken through the beginning swimming progressions as outlined by the American Red Cross. After they had progressed sufficiently in basic swimming skills, the subjects were arbitrarily placed into two experimental groups.

The depth distribution of goldeye, Hiodon alosoides, and yellow perch, Perea flavescens. was studied in Moccasin Bay on the Little Missouri Arm of Garrison Reservoir, North Dakota, using a specially constructed vertical gill net (June through August, 1966). Ten other species were captured in relatively small numbers. Throughout the summer nearly all goldeye were caught at night in the upper ten feet of water. Indications were that goldeye depth distribution was affected more by light and feeding habits than by the limnological factors measured. Small numbers of yellow perch caught in June indicated no distinct depth preference; however, all yellow …

The frogs' activities were followed from their spring emergence untril the tadpoles metamorphosed and hibernated in the fall. Collections and observations were made at regular intervals through the entire period of summer activity.
