Two species of Haemaphysalis occurring in the western United States were studied with respect to geographical distribution, seasonal occurrence, host-parasite association and external anatomy and morphology. H. leporispalustris is widely distributed in the west. Abundant records for some states are lacking and should be provided to extend the knowledge of this tick's distribution.

Lily Lake, a subalpine lake in the Wasatch National Forest Tl5, R9E, S31, of the Uinta Mountain Region, Utah, is located about one-half mile west of Trial Lake at an elevation of 10,000 feet. This Lake, which is one of the acidic, cold, lentic bogs characteristic of this area, has been selected for a taxonomic and seasonal distribution study of acquatic phycomycetes. This study is a beginning to our knowledge of the role of the fungi in the hydrobiology of Lily Lake and will supply the first information on record of the water molds of this area. A Study Of The Golden-Mantled Ground Squirrel (Citellus Lateralis) In A Sagebrush-Grass Community, Dennis E. Peterson

Golden-mantled ground squirrels (Citellus lateralis Say) typically inhabit coniferous forest regions, but they occasionally occur in desert shrub habitats. The principal purpose of this study was to observe activities of mantled squirrels in a sagebrush community, and to ascertain factors which contribute to their success in an unusually arid habitat. Squirrels of this community belong to the subspecies C. l. lateralis; however, intergradation between typical C. l. lateralis and C. l. castanurus is evident. This community is in the Wasatch Mountains at an elevation of 5,750 feet, and in the Upper Sonoran Zone. These three conditions were not previously recorded …

Utah Lake, located in Utah County, north-central Utah, is one of the most important natural fishing lakes in the state. The spawning ecology of the white bass (Roccus chrysops) was studied in Utah Lake between 1964 and 1966. Gill nets and seining were the primary means of sampling. The spawning location was sampled every other day throughout the spring and early summer of 1966. Three major winter schooling areas were found: Provo Bay - Creer Access south to the mouth of Spanish Fork River, Lincoln Beach, and off Ludlow Barn. During the summer of 1966, eighteen soil profiles on a series of 21 lateral moraines, were studied to ascertain the relationship of time to soil development. The moraines are located on Charlotte Ridge on the south margin of the Martin River Glacier in south-central Alaska. The elevation of the highest moraine is approximately fifteen hundred feet and is located 800 feet above the present level of the glacier.

Juglone (5-hydroxy 1:1; napthoquinone), a chemical substance originally isolated from the walnut tree, has not been investigated to any great extent. Preliminary reports revealed that juglone had depressant effects on a number of species of laboratory animals when administered intraperitoneally and was lethal in large doses. The present study was undertaken to elucidate some of the pharmacological properties of juglone when administered intravenously to anesthetized dogs.

Twenty-six adult mongrel dogs were subdivided into three groups. The animals were anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital and infused with the juglone solution through the femoral vein. Two groups of ten each received 3 xng/kg …

This research was undertaken to determine the effect on growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis of a single stress followed at some later time by a second stress, using temperature change and osmotic pressure change as stress factors.

Growth rate of T. pyriformis was determined under standard conditions of temperature and osmotic pressure (29°C and 100 milliosmols). A single stress consisting of a decrease in temperature to 20°C or an increase in osmotic pressure to 300 milliosmols was applied to an exponentially growing culture and its effect noted. In western North Dakota many drainage channels that are incised into valley fill are characterized by steep, unvegetated sides. Many such channels contain actively eroding scarps. The origin of these scarps is most frequently related to increased water velocity causing accelerated erosion on a steepened reach of the valley flat.

2. There are no differences in students' religious attitudes related to the priesthood and religious activity status of the fathers.

4. There is no relationship between a student's religious attitudes and his religious activity.

Electron microscopy has settled prior controversies regarding the relationship of axon, myelin and Schwann cell bat doubt remains about the correct interpretation of the classic binding sheaths. Perineurium is customarily interpreted to be flattened fibroblasts but recent evidence suggests attenuated Schwann cells. This study attempts to reinterpret the morphology of peripheral nerve known to be fixed adequately for fine structure. Special emphasis is placed on the binding sheaths, especially perineurium.

Forty white rats were perfused with buffered aldehydes. Sural and sciatic nerves were removed. Smaller nerves were obtained with orbital contents and the loose connective tissue of spleen and pancreas. …

Blood vessels traversing the subarachnoid space possess morphological characteristics reflecting specialized function and environment. The spaces associated with these vessels are of special Interest. Until recently, however, clear descriptions of these vessels and the spaces associated with them were limited by Inadequate fixation. This study describes the normal morphology of blood vessels in the subarachnoid space and their associated spaces in tissues known to be fixed adequately for fine structure.

The ecological life history of budsage (Artemisia spinescens D.C. Eaton) was investigated during 1963 and 1964. The field studies were conducted at the Desert Experimental Range in Millard County, Utah. Laboratory studies were done at Brigham Young University. The different community types in which budsage grows were described and the physical site factors, viz. climate, soil texture, total soluble salts, hydrogen ion concentration of the soil, carbonate content and soil moisture were investigated. The purpose of this study was to obtain accurate quantitative estimates of the high temperature tolerance of five species of anuran amphibians, Bufo hemiophrvs. Rana plpiens, R. sylvatlca, R. septentrionalis, and Pseudacris nigrita. B. hemiophrvs and P. nlqrlta were collected in the vicinity of Grand Forks, North Dakota; the remaining species were collected at Itasca State Park, Minnesota. Tolerance was measured using the water submersion method described by Schmid (Ecology, 1965). The data were analysed by several statistical methods and the results were compared.
