The purpose of this study was to identify factors related to attitudes of teenagers toward the Family Home Evening Program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Hypotheses involving the relationships of certain factors to attitudes toward home evening were tested.

A cluster sample of twenty-three ninth grade classes was selected and data were gathered through use of a questionnaire. Statistics used in analysis of data included the Pearsonian product moment correlation coefficient, and analysis of variance. Responses to open-end questions were content analyzed by three independent judges.

Tetracyclines, originally isolated in the late 1940's and early 1950's from the mycelium of Streptomyces, have achieved major importance as therapeutic and prophylactic agents against a wide range of infections in human and veterinary medicine. They have also achieved great importance in agriculture where they are widely used to promote weight gain in livestock. Commercial production, during 1958 in the United States alone was 120 tons with a value of approximately $1 million per ton.

Three predominant and economically important shrubs of the sagebrush-grass range community in Utah, namely big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata Nutt.), rubber rabbitbrush (Chrysothamnus nauseosus (Pall.) Britt.), antelope bitterbrush (Purshia tridentata (Pursh) DC), and a widely re-seeded range grass, crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum (L.) Gaertn.) were sampled during the summers of 1966 and 1967, and yielded twenty species of thrips. Three species (Anaphothrips tricolor Moulton, Chirothrips aculeatus Bagnall, Chirothrips simplex Hood) were new distributional records for Utah. A study of tumbleweeds in North Dakota, conducted from June, 1964 to October, 1968, was concentrated on two common species: Psoralea arqophvlla Pursh (silver leaf psoralea) and Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrader (kochia). The objectives were to determine the internal or external factors regulating stem abscission, and to describe the niche of each species through the ecological life history approach. Anatomical and histochemical studies were conducted on the basal portions of stems at various stages of plant maturity. The overwintering habitats and winter mortality rates of predaceous mites (Phytoseiidae: Typhlodromus) were investigated during three successive winters, 1965-66, 1966-67, and 1967-68. Three species were predominant in derelict apple orchards, Typhlodromus mcgregori Chant on twigs and spurs and rough bark of scaffold limbs and trunk, Typhlodromus occidentalis Nesbitt on rough bark of scaffold limbs and trunk, and Amblyseius cucumeris Oudemans in ground cover. Other species (Typhlodromus columbiensis Chant, Typhlodromus caudiglans Schuster, Amblyseius fallacis (Garman), Amblyseius ovatus (Garman), Amblyseius floridanus (Muma), and Amblyseius rosellus Chant) were collected only incidentally. During the spring seasons of 1967 and 1968 ecological studies were made of nesting Ferruginou.s Hawks (Buteo regalis) in a 325 square mile area in west-central Utah. In the springs of 1967 and 1968 a systematic search was conducted throughout the study area for Ferruginous Hawk nests. When active nests were located they were kept under observation throughout the study. The density of nesting pairs in 1967 and 1968 ranged from 7 to 15.4 square miles per pair. An annual seasonal displacement was exhibited, with Ferruginous Hawks being present in the study area only during the nesting season, which lasted …

Previous research has shown that polyembryony occurs in many species of the Ulmaceae. The purpose of this study was to determine the method of multiple embryo formation in netleaf hackberry, Celtis reticulata Torr. Collections of specimens were made throughout a two-year period. Collections were begun in early spring while the trees were still in the bud state. Collections were continued regularly throughout the growing season. This thesis describes my study of inhibition of brain regeneration in planaria. The flatworm (Dugesia tigrina) possesses a remarkable ability to regenerate lost parts, including the head. The primary objective of my study was to determine the extent to which an inhibiting substance, located in the head, would prevent regeneration of the brain. A secondary objective was to study whether DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) would facilitate the action of the inhibitor.

The objectives were (I) to estimate if channel catfish are increasing or decreasing in Mud Lake, (2) to estimate the mean size of adult channel catfish in Mud lake, (3) to determine which environmental factors effect the catch of channel catfish, and (4) to determine if the channel catfish in Mud lake are residents year round. Seedlings of Indian rice grass Oryzopsis hvmenoides (Roem. & Shult.) Ricker. were studied to determine the effect of soil moisture, photoperiod, depth of burial of germinated grains, temperature, and the rate of soil accumulation on seedling growth and tillering. The study was performed in two phases: Field observations and laboratory studies. Field observations were made on a system of sand dunes located northwest of Lynndyl, Utah. A possible thyroidal control of water balance in the leopard frog, Rana pipiens, was investigated by (1) chemically thyroidectomizing intact animals by chronic injections of the goitrogen, 6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU ), or making animals hyperthyroid with thyroxine injections, and (2) dehydration of the frogs in a flow of air to enhance the rate of water loss through the skin, followed by rehydration in tap water until the animals regained their former weight. A Cretaceous fern flora haas been recently discovered near Westwater, Grand County, Utah. Among specimens collected from Westwater are many forms related to extant members of the fern family Matoniaceae. This family was widely distributed geographically throughout most of the Mesozoic Era, and matoniaceous ferns have been collected from several fossil localities in the United States. The Matoniaceae was especially important in the United States during Lower Cretaceous times. From January to July, 1967, a study of dispersion and distribution characteristics of Typhlodromus mcgregori Chant, Bryobia praetiosa Koch, and Bryobia rubrioculus (Scheuten) was made in an abandoned apple orchard in Highland, American Fork, Utah and in the laboratory at Provo, Utah. Bryobia praetiosa overwintered on the spurs and the other protected sites and with the advent of spring migrated out of the tree and back onto the cover crop. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ultrastructural aspects of the host-pathogen relationship between the fungus Sphaerotheca pannosa (Wallr.) Lev. and a susceptible horticultural variety of floribunda rose "Eutin". Attention was given to the penetration of hyphal tubes, and their subsequent development into: haustorial elements in epidermal cells of rose. In addition, changes in the morphology of infected epidermal cells were described. Thiamine deficiency has been reported to cause nerve degeneration in the peripheral nervous system and hemorrhage with associated cellular damage in the central nervous system (Prickett, 1934). Koedam (1958) observed convulsions in thiamine-deficient pigeons, but convulsions have only rarely been seen in rats (Gubler, 1961). Rats treated with the thiamine antagonist, pyrithiamine (PTh)* always develop ataxia and convulsions but these neurological symptoms have never been reported in those treated with oxythiamine (OTh), another thiamine antagonist (Gubler, 1961). Considerable research on ticks has been done since it was discovered that the Rocky Mountain wood tick, Dermacentor andersoni Stiles, was a principal vector of Rocky Mountain spotted fevero Additional disease agents of man are also transmitted by D. andersoni. This tick and a closely related species, Dermacentor parumapertus Neuman, occur commonly in Utah. The two species are often closely associated, although D. andersoni is believed to occur in the mountains, whereas D. parumapertus is in the desert valleys. Phytoseiid mites were first studied from an economic standpoint by Parrott et al. (1906), who described the value of Seius pomi Koch in controlling the pear leaf blister mite Eriophyes pyri (Pgst.). The taxonomic and biological studies of Garman (1948), Nesbitt (1951), and Chant ( 1959) stimulated additional interest in phytoseiids as predators, and in recent years they have been studied rather extensively as biological control agents of phytophagous mites.

I. Marital dissatisfaction for both husband and wife is less in the first stage than in the third stage of the family life cycle.
II. For both husband and wife the ideal spouse concept is the same in stage one as in stage three of the family life cycle.

The parasitic mites on mammals living in the chaparral community of Utah are practically unknown ecologically. Keegan (1953) was the first to publish on parasitic mites from Utah. He listed mites of 12 species and 9 genera from Tooele and Juab counties from hosts which included one Peromyscus truei, five P. crinitus, and 20 P. maniculatus. Brennan and Beck (1955) published on the chiggers of Utah and included a key to 38 species. Allred (1954, 1956, 1957, 1958) studied the geographical distribution, seasonal occurrence, and biology of mites found on mice of the genus Peromyscus in Utah.
