Clinical and experimental data suggest that humans and some animals are protected from acute myocardial infarction by estrogen. There has been much speculation of the exact role which estrogen plays in the circulation. The mechanism of this hormonally related protection is unclear.

In the present study the chronic effects of estradiol benzoate on coronary blood flow in adult female rats were studied. Female control rats, castrates and castrates receiving estrogen for a period of 16 weeks were used. An Interphysiographic Analysis Of Herb And Shrub Vegetation In Virginia Forests, Stephen James Binns

Thirty upland deciduous stands were sampled from the mid-coastal Plain to the mid-Piedmont in New Kent, Hanover, and Louisa Counties. Density data for herb and shrub species were collected and soil samples were collected in each stand. A cluster analysis of the vegetation data was performed using Euclidean Distance and "furthest-neighbor" clustering. Four clusters of stands were identified. A cluster of six stands with Euonymus americanus as the dominant species was strongly related to the Coastal Plain, but the other clusters were not physiographically associated. Other important species in the analysis were Vaccinium vacillans, Gaylussacia baccata, and Mitchella repens.

The study examined whether adaptive maternal behaviors correlated with a positive self-concept measurement. The adaptive behaviors observed were those which the literature suggested indicate a positive response to the changes of the puerperium. The study aimed at assisting the nurse in assessing the self-concept level of clients. The researcher also hoped to contribute to the continued development of nursing theories and the application of the theories to the arena of clinical practice.

Autonomic Responses Of Normals And Depressives To Stress Inducing Stimuli, Dennis Donat

A group of depressed (N=10) and a group of normal (N=10) were presented a series of stressor stimuli to assess several parameters of their physiological responses to these stimuli. The results indicated that the groups did not differ in their relative tendency to show maximal response specificity (consistently responding to stress with a maximum response in the same channel) or pattern stereotypy (the tendency to respond consistently in all physiological channels relative to each other). A multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), of the levels of the physiological channels under conditions of rest, anticipation, and stress revealed a significant group effect. …

The Stanton Site (W1/2NE1/4 sec. 16, T. 144 N., R. 85W.), eastern Mercer County, North Dakota, contains a late Holocene organic deposit in the cutbank of an ephemeral stream on the Missouri Plateau. Strati graphic units of the 104-cm section are, in ascending order: (l) gravel; (2) silty, organic, sandy clay; (3) organic silt; (4) silty, sandy, organic clay; (5) organic silt; (6) sandy, silt, organic clay; and (7) sand. A radiocarbon date of wood from the base of unit 2 indicates initiation of deposition at 325±_115 radiocarbon years B.P.

The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. Historic preservation in Utah from 1960 to 1980 has reflected major national trends and trends peculiar to Utah. The most important event which increased the influence of the federal government in preservation activities in Utah was the passage of the Federal Historic Preservation Act of 1966. This law influenced the Utah State Historical Society to become active in preservation in Utah. The battles to save the L. D. S. tabernacles in the 1960s and 1970s led to the formation of the Utah Heritage Foundation. This organization has been responsible for the heightened awareness of historic preservation in Utah. The present investigation concerns itself with the phenomenon of natural language phonetic symbolism. Proponents of phonetic symbolism, or the hypothesis of phonetic universals, as it is sometimes called, claim that human speech sounds have inherent meaning apart from their learned association with referents in the world. Since phonetic symbolism had been used to explain both success in guessing the meanings of foreign words and also a consistent tendency to attribute particular meanings to selected nonlinguistic verbalizations, it was hypothesized that phonetic symbols were part of an underlying stratum of semantic invariance. The feasibility of liquid extraction as an economic alternative to the ternary azeotrope distillation of an ethanol-water fermenta tion mixture was studied. Experimentation included the determination of the attractiveness of the potential solvents "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, ethyl ether, unleaded gasoline, and #2 diesel fuel. Selectivities and distribution coefficients for these solvents were determined. Analysis included generation of a process flowsheet and the resultant energy requirements and process economics.

Unleaded gasoline was selected aver #2 diesel fuel as the more attractive solvent based on the distribution coefficients, and "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, and ethyl ether were ruled out as potential solvents.

This study focused upon assessing various relationships between the presence or absence of a transitional object in early childhood and aspects of psychological functioning in later life. The nature of the inanimate object attachments were determined by stringent criteria involving both self- and parental-reports. Personality differences were found between those subjects demonstrating strong singular attachments that persisted for a considerable period of time and those having no such significant attachments. The nature of what might be considered optimal object attachments was discussed in light of the findings.

Although many authors have used the term "grief work" since Lindemann (1944) first coined it, there has been no systematic investigation of the nature of this phenomenon. This study sought to delineate the cognitive and interpersonal events that occur during grief events and grief resolution. It was hypothesized that grief work involves the creation of a new relationship with the deceased, and that this would be manifested in a variety of styles of grief.

In a replication of a study which demonstrated a relationship between Masculinity and Independence, the nature of the relationship between Self-esteem and orthogonal Masculinity and Femininity di mensions was examined. Regression analyses for 212 female and 165 male undergraduates indicated that for both sexes, Masculinity was moderately correlated to Self-esteem, but that Femininity did not add to this prediction significantly. Scores for Independence were obtained from a subset of 24 females and 29 males by placing them in a conformity paradigm situation. The feasibility of treating slagging gasifier wastewater by physical-chemical means was studied. Pretreatment and treatment flow schemes were developed by using batch and continuous tests. Results were based mainly on wastewater residual total organic carbon (TOC). A treatment facility was designed and economically evaluated.

It was found that slagging gasifier wastewater is treatable by physical-chemical means using activated carbon and chemical oxidation as the two principal treatment steps. A pretreatment scheme consisting of lime addition, ammonia stripping, and recarbonation-coagu- lation was found to sufficiently purify the raw gasifier liquor so that activated carbon adsorption and chemical oxidation could be applied …

The reproductive biology of Chipping Sparrows (Spizella passerina) was studied during 2 breeding seasons at the University of Minnesota Forestry and Biology Station, Itasca State Park, Minnesota. Reproductive success was determined primarily by the incidence of nest predation. Parasitism by Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) caused a comparatively smaller loss in reproductive success. Four pairs raised two broods in one season. Males assumed nearly all care of first brood fledglings, freeing the female to build a second nest. This strategy of parental care may improve the chances of a pair having a second brood.

Pair relationships were typically monogamous. One of …

Sympatric populations of greater prairie chickens (Tympanuchus cupido) and sharp-tailed grouse (Pedioecetes phasianel lus) were studied between 1975 and 1978 in northwestern Minnesota for the pur poses of identifying and determining the strength of reproductive isolating mechanisms between them. Major emphasis was placed on ethological mechanisms but other factors were also examined.

Approximately a fifth of the sharptail’s distribution overlaps half of the prairie chicken’s within North America. Within the zone of sympatry, prairie chicken populations are in small patches and may be liable to hybrid swarming, particularly with changes in land-use practices. The chemical and biological properties of ponds artifically created as a result of the strip-mining process, were studied in Mercer County, North Dakota. The water in four of these ponds was analyzed for 25 chemical variables, pH and electrical conductivity. These same variables were also analyzed in bottom sediments and spoils surrounding the four ponds. Invertebrates were collected and identified from these ponds, as well as measuring certain attributes of community structure, including species composition, density, biomass and species diversity. Both the chemical and biological properties documented in strip-mine ponds were compared to a naturally occurring pond nearby (NBUN).

Continuous catalytic depolymerization of solvent refined lignite (SRL) was investigated by reacting it catalytically with hydrogen in a fixed bed trickle reactor, using tetralin as the solvent. At a reaction temperature of 450° C , a hydrogen atmos phere at 1,000 psi, and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0 to 1.5 hr“^, 58 runs were made using eighteen different catalysts. Yields of light oil ranged from 0.010 to 0.211 grams of light oil produced per gram of SRL fed. The spring and summer ecology of female greater prairie chickens in northwestern Minnesota was intensively studied from mid-April through August during 1975, 1976, and 1977. Twenty-one females were radio-tagged and monitored for an average of 57.1 days, yielding 1,113 locations. Female visits to booming grounds peaked around 12 April and copulations peaked around 20 April. Habitats disturbed by culti vation, grazing, haying, and burning accounted for 60.6% of all loca tions of monitored females during egg laying and incubation with crop land used by 10 of 17 females.
