The material output from the cuber was collected and …
Biophysical Studies Of Gene Sequence G-Quadruplexes And I-Motifs, Jamie Marie Dettler
Biophysical Studies Of Gene Sequence G-Quadruplexes And I-Motifs, Jamie Marie Dettler
Theses and Dissertations
The treatment and/or prevention of cancer by selective down regulation of cancer causing gene (oncogene) transcription would represent a significant advance in the area of anticancer drug design. Non-canonical higher order DNA structures formed in oncogene promoter regions are novel targets for the modulation of oncogene expression. An obvious advantage of selectively targeting oncogene expression would be that general cytotoxicity would be minimized and the negative side effects of current chemotherapy approaches could be minimized or eliminated. To provide a foundation for the design of drugs that target oncogene promoter G-quadruplexes and i-Motifs, the basic understanding is required of the …
Headwater Hydrologic Functions In The Upper Gulf Coastal Plain Of Mississippi, Byoungkoo Choi
Headwater Hydrologic Functions In The Upper Gulf Coastal Plain Of Mississippi, Byoungkoo Choi
Theses and Dissertations
Headwater streams are considered to be the greatest contributor to nonpoint source and are a crucial part of overall watershed dynamics because they comprise more than 50-80% of stream networks and watershed land areas. This study addressed the influence of headwater areas (ephemeral and intermittent) on downstream hydrology and water quality following harvest as well as characteristics of vegetation communities within three first-order catchments in the Upper Gulf Coastal Plain of Mississippi. Four treatments representing a range of potential Best Management Practices (BMPs) for ephemeral drains were used: BMP1 - removal of all merchantable stems while leaving understory intact with …

Functional Complementation Analysis Of Fungal Rtg2 Homologs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ercan Selcuk Unlu
Functional Complementation Analysis Of Fungal Rtg2 Homologs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ercan Selcuk Unlu
Theses and Dissertations
Changes in gene expression in response to mitochondrial dysfunction are mediated by components of the retrograde signaling pathway. The mitochondrial signal is recognized and transferred to the nucleus by dynamic interactions between regulatory proteins Rtg2p, Mks1p and Bmh1p. Retrograde signaling genes have been well characterized in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae but very little is known about the retrograde response of other fungi. To identify retrograde signaling proteins in other fungi, the protein sequence encoded by the S. cerevisiae RTG2 gene was used to search for fungal homologs using NCBI BlastP and the T-Coffee Multiple Sequence Alignment program. We selected …
Genetic Variation And Leprosy Distribution In Nine-Banded Armadillos, Leah Chinchilla
Genetic Variation And Leprosy Distribution In Nine-Banded Armadillos, Leah Chinchilla
Theses and Dissertations
Genetic, ecological, and environmental variation within and among populations of hosts and pathogens can influence local susceptibility of hosts and transmission rates of pathogens. These complex interactions can lead to geographic variation in the prevalence of pathogens. The interaction between leprosy and nine-banded armadillos in the southeastern U.S. provides an opportunity to examine the genetic, ecological, and environmental factors contributing to the variation in pathogen prevalence on a large geographic scale. Using genotypic data for loci associated with the immune response to leprosy and for anonymous loci, we have assessed the population structure of armadillo populations across the southern U.S. …

Geographic Information System (Gis) Simulation Of Emergency Power Production From Disaster Debris In A Combined Heat And Power (Chp) System, Christopher Shannon Ryals
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this study is to determine a predicted energy capacity of disaster debris for the production of emergency power using a combined heat and power (CHP) unit. A prediction simulation using geographic information systems (GIS) will use data from past storms to calculate an estimated amount of debris along with an estimated energy potential of said debris. Rather than the expense and burden of transporting woody debris such as downed trees and wood framing materials offsite, they can be processed (sorting and chipping) to provide an onsite energy source to provide power to emergency management facilities such as …
Genomic Instability May Be A Signal Of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Clara Ines Esteban-Perez
Genomic Instability May Be A Signal Of Human Embryonic Stem Cell Differentiation, Clara Ines Esteban-Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Embryonic stem (ES) cells have the ability to maintain pluripotency and self-renewal during in vitro maintenance, which is a key to their clinical applications. ES cells are a model in developmental biology studies due to their potential to differentiate in vitro. Understanding critical pathways of pluripotency, self-renewal, and differentiation during early embryonic development is important for the evaluation of the therapeutic potential of ES cells because of their ability for tumor transformation due to genetic and epigenetic instability acquired during in vitro culture maintenance. Single tandem repeats are sequences of DNA that have been implicated in the deregulation of gene …
Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker
Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Grassland birds must have accessible, nutritional prey for nestlings which Conservation Reserve Program practices like CP33—Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds may provide. In 2008—2009, I monitored dickcissel nests in and around CP33 buffers at a farm in north-central Mississippi using video cameras to capture provisioning activities. I simultaneously observed foraging flights and measured distances traveled from nests. Orthopterans were the most commonly chosen prey, and dickcissels brought larger prey items when chicks were older. But, other changes in provisioning were not significantly related to nest age as I hypothesized. Also contrary to my initial hypotheses, provisioning at nests within buffers …
Predicting The Spatial Distribution Of Forest Harvests In Mississippi From Landsat Tm Data: Accuracy And Characterization, Michael Bryan Jackson
Predicting The Spatial Distribution Of Forest Harvests In Mississippi From Landsat Tm Data: Accuracy And Characterization, Michael Bryan Jackson
Theses and Dissertations
Methods are needed to predict the spatial distribution pattern(s) of forest harvests to improve large-scale timber inventories through the incorporation of spatial distribution information. In this study, land cover type change detection methods were carried out using information from 1972 thru 2005 east-central Mississippi Landsat TM data to detect the spatial distribution of clearcut forest harvests. A random pattern was observed for clearcut harvests and this and other statistical data gathered in the study will be integrated into an existing forest inventory and transportation network database. The resulting harvested and forested area predictions generated by the database will assist with …
Predicting The Potential Distributions Of Major Invasive Species Using Geospatial Models In Southern Forest Lands, Yuan Tan
Theses and Dissertations
Former researches provide evidence that invasive species could alter ecosystem’s components, threaten native species and cause economic losses in southern forest lands. The objective of the project is to explore significant driving factors and develop geospatial models for monitoring, predicting and mapping the extent and conditions of major invasive species. In the study area, 16 invasive species were classified into four groups: regionally spreading species, regionally establishing species, locally spreading species and regionally colonizing species by population size and spatial characteristics. According to local Moran’s I, spatial autocorrelation existed in 16 invasive species. Autologistic model and simultaneous autoregressive model were …
Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Glioblastoma Multiforme Microsatellite Instability, Kortney Lynnette Wilkinson-Busha
Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Glioblastoma Multiforme Microsatellite Instability, Kortney Lynnette Wilkinson-Busha
Theses and Dissertations
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an extremely aggressive and almost always fatal brain tumor. GBM literature indicates defective mismatch repair (MMR) mechanisms are not involved in GBM tumorigenesis as in other tumors, and instigating mechanisms of GBM tumorigenesis remain unclear. GBM and neural progenitor (NPR) cells were exposed to three concentrations of H2O2 (0, 0.5, and 1.0 μM), cultured, and then harvested 0, 2, 4, and 6 days post-exposure; DNA from cells was amplified with microsatellite primers, investigating whether or not H2O2 exposure affected microsatellite instability (MSI) in target sequences. Three out of six markers showed significant MSI in the H2O2-exposed …
Oxidative Stress Induces Dna Strand Breaks May Lead To Genomic Instability In Ovarian Tumorigenesis, Harold-Humberto Moreno-Ortiz
Oxidative Stress Induces Dna Strand Breaks May Lead To Genomic Instability In Ovarian Tumorigenesis, Harold-Humberto Moreno-Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
Oxidative stress (OS) occurs when DNA repair mechanisms are overcome by the amount of single and double strand DNA breaks caused by an accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Genomic instability (GI) by microsatellite instability (MSI) accumulation is characterized by changes in DNA single tandem repeats (STR) as a direct result of ROS. Deregulation of DNA repair and tumor suppressor pathways have been described as causes of tumor progression and metastasis. Studies in mammals have focused on GI and the implications of increased mutation frequency due to accumulation of MSI leading to development of diseases, including infertility and cancer. Ovarian …

Systems Biology Modeling Of Bovine Fertility Using Proteomics, Divya Swetha Peddinti
Theses and Dissertations
Beef and milk production industries represent the largest agricultural industries in the United States with a retail equivalent value of approximately $112 billion (USDA, 2008). Infertility is the major problem for mammalian reproduction. In the United States approximately 66% of cows are bred by Artificial Insemination (AI), but only ~50% of these inseminations result in successful pregnancies. Infertility can occur either from male factor (spermatozoon) or female factor (oocyte) and male contributes approximately 40% of cases. Infertility costs the producer approximately $5 per exposed cow for every 1% reduction in pregnancy rate. In spite of its millions of dollars in …

Modeling Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum Spicatum) Habitat With Geographic Information Systems, Joby Michelle Prince
Modeling Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum Spicatum) Habitat With Geographic Information Systems, Joby Michelle Prince
Theses and Dissertations
Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) habitat was predicted at multiple scales, including a lake, regional, and national level. This dissertation illustrates how habitat can be predicted for M. spicatum using publically-available data for both presence and environmental variables. Models were generated using statistical procedures and quantative methods to determine where the greatest likelihood of presence was located. For the single lake, presence and absence data were available, but the larger-scale models used presence-only methods of prediction. These models were paired with a Geographic Information System so that data could be visualized on a map. For the selected lake, Pend Oreille (Idaho), …

Theses and Dissertations
The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta)(RIFA) is a major pest in the United States, causing serious economic and human costs. This study explored the feasibility of using digital aerial remote sensing in multispectral/multitemporal detection and mapping of RIFA mounds. Comparison of photointerpretive mound counts versus ground control counts was performed within two grass types, common Bermuda and tall fescue. Flights collecting digital image data occurred at three intervals in 2009, with ground truth data collected collaterally. Poisson regression count modeling was first utilized for analysis of both datasets. Moran's Index geospatial analysis was applied following the Poisson model. Outcomes …
Using Precision Agriculture Technology To Evaluate Environmental And Economic Tradeoffs Of Alternative Cp-33 Enrollments, Mark Dewitt Mcconnell
Using Precision Agriculture Technology To Evaluate Environmental And Economic Tradeoffs Of Alternative Cp-33 Enrollments, Mark Dewitt Mcconnell
Theses and Dissertations
United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Bill conservation programs provide landowner incentives to remove less productive and environmentally sensitive lands from agricultural production and re-establish them in natural vegetation to achieve conservation objectives. However, removal of arable land from production imposes an opportunity cost associated with loss in revenue from commodities that otherwise would have been produced. The Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds practice (CP-33) under the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program is a targeted conservation practice designed to increase northern bobwhite populations in agricultural landscapes. However, establishing CP-33 buffers on profitable farmland may be incompatible with economic objectives of landowners. …

Red Oak Acorn Production, Mass, And Gross Energy Dynamics In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Alan Gregory Leach
Theses and Dissertations
Acorns of red oaks (Quercus spp; Subgenus Erythrobalanus) are important forage for wildlife and seed for oak regeneration. I estimated production of viable acorns by red oaks in 5 forests in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) and 2 greentree reservoirs (GTRs) in Mississippi. Mean acorn production in the MAV was 439 kg(dry)/ha of red oak crown (CV = 29%) during autumn-winter 2009-2010 and 794 kg/ha (CV = 19%) in GTRs during autumn-winters 2008-2010. I recommend researchers sample acorn production in the MAV for ≥5 years to improve precision of estimates (i.e., CV ≤ 15%). I estimated mass and gross energy …

Fish Biodiversity In Floodplain Lakes Of The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Daniel Jay Dembkowski
Theses and Dissertations
Fish assemblages from 54 oxbow lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley were sampled to identify relationships among environmental variables and fish biodiversity in floodplain lake ecosystems. Environmental variables deterministic over fish biodiversity showed a hierarchical organization and were classified as primary or secondary depending on if one variable was considered to govern another. Primary variables included depth, surface area, surrounding land use, and degree of lake-river interconnectedness. Secondary variables included suites of water quality and primary productivity variables. Maximum depth and percentage of agricultural land surrounding lakes showed strongest relationships with other ecosystem components, significantly influencing water quality, primary productivity, …

Mapping Current Range With Respect To Abiotic Site Factors Of Selected Southern Oaks (Quercus Spp) In Mississippi, Laura Kim Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
Physical characteristics of a site that plant species inhabit may be useful in deriving the range of the species. Current range maps for tree species of the United States were originally developed by Elbert Little. These range maps were based primarily on observations. The purpose of this study was to update Little’s (Little, 1971) range maps of select southern oak species in Mississippi by calculating the topological, soil, and climatic features of sites using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyze environmental variables associated with species distributions. Data collected from databases were input into ArcMap and site data extracted using …
The Influence Of Family Structure And Transitions On Parenting, Income, Residential Mobility, And Substance Initiation In Early Adolescence: A Comparison Of Caucasian And African American Youth, Sally Mays
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of family structure on youth adjustment has received increasing attention as historical trends in single parenting, divorce, remarriage, and cohabitation with partners and extended family members have produced a diverse constellation of structures. African American youth are less likely than Caucasian youth to live in an “intact” family. Links between family structure and a variety of indices of youth adjustment have been established, although a relatively understudied outcome is that of substance initiation, despite its association with dependence and other negative sequelae. The dynamic effect of transitions has additionally been less studied than the static effect of structure. …
Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3-Substituent Rimonabant Analogs, D. Matthew Walentiny
Discriminative Stimulus Properties Of 3-Substituent Rimonabant Analogs, D. Matthew Walentiny
Theses and Dissertations
Cannabinoid agonists (e.g., THC) dose-dependently decrease locomotor activity and body temperature and produce antinociception and catalepsy. Drugs that produce this tetrad of effects within a limited dose range are likely to function as CB1 receptor agonists. A structure activity relationship study from our laboratory investigating analogs of the CB1 antagonist rimonabant revealed that certain alterations in the 3-substituent of rimonabant’s pyrazole core conferred agonist-like properties in the tetrad. Interestingly, these effects were present in CB1 -/- mice, and were not reversed by rimonabant in wild-type mice. The present study evaluated two novel 3-substituent rimonabant analogs, O-6629 and O-6658 in the …

Phytoremediation Of Pcb Contaminated Soil: Effectiveness And Regulatory Policy, Nathan Pinsker
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this paper was to combine available peer-reviewed literature on PCB phytoremediation and make direct comparisons using ANCOVA statistics in order to determine if and what plants are presently a viable option for the remediation of PCB contaminated soils. Pumpkin (Curbita pepo cv Howden) consistently had the top root and shoot concentrations, as well as total plant accumulation. Their consistency shows that they can be reliable in the field and the most viable option. Tall fescue and sedge were also top contenders. Due to the small sample size for many plants and accounting for several confounding variables, very …
Sulfatide Is Required For Organization Of The Paranode In The Myelinated Axon In The Peripheral Nervous System, Eva Kwong
Theses and Dissertations
Myelin facilitates the timely, efficient conduction of action potentials along axons. Made by Schwann cells (SCs) in the PNS, myelin is unique in that it is composed of a high percentage of lipids, particularly galactolipids. Sulfatide, one such galactolipid, is made by cerebroside sulfotransferase (CST) and has been shown to play a role in organizing paranodal domains in myelinated axons. However less is known regarding the involvement of sulfatide in the establishment and maintenance of the node, of particular interest as it is responsible for the potentiation of action potentials along the axon. Using immunohistochemical and, to a lesser extent, …
