Microbial Community Function In Freshwater Wetland Soils: Using Extracellular Enzyme Analysis To Study The Effect Of Moisture And Vegetation, Aaron Porter
Theses and Dissertations
Differences in microbial function via extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) were investigated to determine the potential effects of hydrology and plant-soil-microbe interactions in a young non-tidal freshwater riparian wetland. To study these relationships, three plots were established along a moisture gradient (Wet, Intermediate, Dry) within VCU Rice Center Within each main plot, five subplots were left undisturbed while another five were cleared of all above-ground plant biomass. Homogenized soil cores (top 10 cm) were analyzed for pH, redox, C:N, soil organic matter (SOM) content, saturation, and temperature. Microbial function was assessed using extracellular enzyme analysis. For most enzymes, a site difference …
Transcriptome Characterization And Polymorphism Detection In Subspecies Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata), Prabin Bajgain
Transcriptome Characterization And Polymorphism Detection In Subspecies Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata), Prabin Bajgain
Theses and Dissertations
Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) is one of the ecologically most important shrub species in western North America. The species serves as a major source of food and habitat for the near-threatened sage grouse and various other fauna. Habitat loss due to a combination of disturbances followed by establishment of invasive plant species is considered as a serious threat to sustainability of the big sagebrush ecosystem. Because of its importance, restoration of this species is very crucial to those dependent on big sagebrush community. However, restoration of big sagebrush carried out by using diverse seed source can lead to …
A Multi-Frequency Inverse Source Problem For The Helmholtz Equation, Sebastian Ignacio Acosta
A Multi-Frequency Inverse Source Problem For The Helmholtz Equation, Sebastian Ignacio Acosta
Theses and Dissertations
The inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation is studied. An unknown source is to be identified from the knowledge of its radiated wave. The focus is placed on the effect that multi-frequency data has on establishing uniqueness. In particular, we prove that data obtained from finitely many frequencies is not sufficient. On the other hand, if the frequency varies within an open interval of the positive real line, then the source is determined uniquely. An algorithm is based on an incomplete Fourier transform of the measured data and we establish an error estimate under certain regularity assumptions on the …
Optimization Of A Tri-Layered Vascular Graft: The Influence Of Cellular And Mechanical Properties, Michael Mcclure
Optimization Of A Tri-Layered Vascular Graft: The Influence Of Cellular And Mechanical Properties, Michael Mcclure
Theses and Dissertations
Electrospinning is a polymer processing technique which allows for the production of nano to micro size fibers and scaffolds which can be composed of numerous synthetic biodegradable materials and natural biopolymers. Natively, elastin and collagen are the main components of vascular tissue. Arranged in a tri-layered structure, they create a specific mechanical environment that can withstand the rigors of circulation. The goal of this study was to develop a mechanically ‘biomimicking’ vascular graft composed of three distinct layers through the process of electrospinning. We hypothesize that the use of bioactive agents such as elastin, collagen, and silk to supplement poly(caprolactone) …
Solar Warning Architecture For Manned Missions To Mars, James S. Bohren, John K. Howard
Solar Warning Architecture For Manned Missions To Mars, James S. Bohren, John K. Howard
Theses and Dissertations
Solar radiation storms represent a dire threat to manned interplanetary space travel. Earth's current solar forecasting architecture is Earth-focused and insufficient to provide timely warnings to a manned mission to Mars, therefore a "best value" solar warning architecture must be identified. A total of 14 solar warning architectures were developed by varying 5 solar sensor locations, 2 processing locations, and 2 communications strategies. Using Satellite Tool Kit, performance of the candidate architectures in terms of Warning Time and Solar Coverage was quantified during a Mars mission scenario based on NASA's Design Reference Architecture 5.0. Cost of each candidate architecture was …
Context Aided Tracking With Adaptive Hyperspectral Imagery, Andrew C. Rice
Context Aided Tracking With Adaptive Hyperspectral Imagery, Andrew C. Rice
Theses and Dissertations
A methodology for the context-aided tracking of ground vehicles in remote airborne imagery is developed in which a background model is inferred from hyperspectral imagery. The materials comprising the background of a scene are remotely identified and lead to this model. Two model formation processes are developed: a manual method, and method that exploits an emerging adaptive, multiple-object-spectrometer instrument. A semi-automated background modeling approach is shown to arrive at a reasonable background model with minimal operator intervention. A novel, adaptive, and autonomous approach uses a new type of adaptive hyperspectral sensor, and converges to a 66% correct background model in …

Lady Libertines, Female Fops, And Lady Julia Fulbank: Aphra Behn's Extraordinary Female Characters., Sarah Audine Amundsen
Theses and Dissertations
Aphra Behn has, throughout her life and subsequent years, been both demonized as a writer of bawdy and licentious plays and poetry as well as being hailed as the forerunner of female writers. She was a woman writing in a man's world, and not only survived the experience, but was exceptionally successful in her efforts. While so little is known about her background, the numerous plays she has left behind demonstrate a skilled author in many forms, as well as a creative and innovative storyteller. This thesis will examine how Behn used the traditional theatrical forms of the time and …

Investigating A Model Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography Stationary Phase With Vibrationally Resonant Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy, Arthur D. Quast
Investigating A Model Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography Stationary Phase With Vibrationally Resonant Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy, Arthur D. Quast
Theses and Dissertations
Reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) is a widely used technique for analytical separations but routinely requires empirical optimization. Gaining a better understanding of the molecular reasons for retention may mean more efficient separations with fewer trial and error runs to obtain optimized separations. Vibrationally resonant sum frequency generation (VR-SFG) is a surface specific technique that has allowed for in situ examination of model RPLC stationary phases under various solvent and pressure conditions. In order to improve on past work with model RPLC stationary phases two challenges had to be overcome. First, improved vibrational mode assignments of the C18 stationary phase were …
Investigating The Influence Of Computer Programs On Perception And Application Of Mathematical Skills, Neil M. Bly
Investigating The Influence Of Computer Programs On Perception And Application Of Mathematical Skills, Neil M. Bly
Theses and Dissertations
Existing research suggests an intuitive relationship between mathematics and computer programming. These previous studies have focused primarily on the cognitive connection and have ignored the potential impact of programming on an individual's perception and application of mathematical skills. By surveying and interviewing a variety of participants, this study aims to provide a descriptive foundation for the experiential side of cognitive correlations and causalities. These phenomenological accounts, garnered from individual interviews of seven different programmers, indicate four specific areas of interest. First, learning to program provided context for many abstract concepts. Second, programming illustrated the important distinction between understanding the application …
Cross-Cultural Ecotheology In The Poetry Of Li-Young Lee, Sienna Miquel Palmer Dittmer
Cross-Cultural Ecotheology In The Poetry Of Li-Young Lee, Sienna Miquel Palmer Dittmer
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the cross-cultural ecotheology of contemporary American poet Li-Young Lee by looking at the intersection of the human, the natural, and the sacred in his poetry. Close readings of Lee's poetic encounters with roses, persimmons, trees, wind, and light through the lens of Christianity and Daoism illustrate the way Lee is able to merge the Eastern concepts of interconnection and mutual harmony with Western ideas of sacredness and divinity. This discussion places Lee in direct conversation with modern and contemporary ecopoets who use the creative energy of language to express our moral and ethical responsibility to the world …
Cis 3,4', 5-Trimethoxy-3'-Aminostilbene (Stilbene 5c) Induces Apoptosis And Protective Autophagy In B16f10 Melanoma Cells, Betelehem Asnake
Cis 3,4', 5-Trimethoxy-3'-Aminostilbene (Stilbene 5c) Induces Apoptosis And Protective Autophagy In B16f10 Melanoma Cells, Betelehem Asnake
Theses and Dissertations
The weak selectivity of chemotherapeutic drugs against tumors has sustained efforts to develop better chemotherapeutic agents that are more potent and selective at destroying tumor cell populations versus normal tissues. This project focuses on evaluating the cell killing effects of the microtubule inhibitor, stilbene 5c, against melanoma cancer. We utilized an in vitro murine melanoma model to study the effects of stilbene 5c on tumor proliferation and survival, as well as growth arrest and cell death. Our findings indicate that stilbene 5c promotes dose dependent cell death in melanomas with the induction of apoptosis and autophagy. The role of autophagy …
Antioxidants In Cancer Research And Prevention: Assay Comparison, Structure-Function Analysis, And Food Product Analysis, Andrew Robert Garrett
Antioxidants In Cancer Research And Prevention: Assay Comparison, Structure-Function Analysis, And Food Product Analysis, Andrew Robert Garrett
Theses and Dissertations
Recent epidemiological studies have suggested that the development and progression of several chronic diseases may be initiated or augmented by oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species react readily with and can damage nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids. While biological systems are equipped antioxidant defenses to cope with oxidative stress, oxidative damage may still occur when oxidative stress overwhelms antioxidant defenses. This damage, if left unchecked, may lead to a variety of degenerative diseases, including heart disease, Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinson's Disease and cancer. Several assays have been designed to describe the antioxidant activity of various phytochemicals, vitamins, and …
Principles Of Learning: A Conceptual Framework For Domain-Specific Theories Of Learning, Christian J. Weibell
Principles Of Learning: A Conceptual Framework For Domain-Specific Theories Of Learning, Christian J. Weibell
Theses and Dissertations
This study is predicated on the belief that there does not now exist, nor will there ever exist, any single theory of learning that is broad enough to account for all types of learning yet specific enough to be maximally useful in practical application. Perhaps this dichotomy is the reason for the apparent gap between existing theories of learning and the practice of instructional design. As an alternative to any supposed grand theory of learning—and following the lead of prominent thinkers in the fields of clinical psychology and language teaching—this study proposes a shift toward principles. It presents a principle-based …

As online learning enrollments rapidly increase, it is vital to explore effective course designs that deepen students' learning experiences. This multiple-case study explores four online courses at Brigham Young University–Idaho that include learning activities where students learned through Teach One Another activities. Teach One Another is similar to Reciprocal Peer Learning where students simultaneously learn and contribute to their peers' learning. Findings across the cases of this study show that Teach One Another activities in online courses encourage students to be accountable and motivated to complete individual course work as well as group assignments. As students learn to build trusting …
The Impact Of Depression And Health On Sexual Satisfaction For Older Couples, Victoria Celeste Scott
The Impact Of Depression And Health On Sexual Satisfaction For Older Couples, Victoria Celeste Scott
Theses and Dissertations
This study of 535 older married couples examined the relationship between depression and health and sexual satisfaction directly and when mediated by communication. The sample included 535 older couples who completed a survey questionnaire known as Project Couple Retire. Among the items in the questionnaire were measures of depression, health, perception of sexual intimacy, communication and other demographic information. Results from Structural Equation Modeling indicated that for women, health was a significant predictor of sexual satisfaction. For both genders, the results suggest that depression, when mediated by communication, is a predictor of sexual satisfaction among older couples.
Progress Toward Theonellamide F, Jennifer Dawn Bettale
Progress Toward Theonellamide F, Jennifer Dawn Bettale
Theses and Dissertations
Theonellamide is a bicyclic peptide isolated from a marine sponge, which shows interesting biological activity. It contains several unnatural amino acids, among which are (2S,3R)-3-hydroxyasparagine (L-erythro-β-hydroxyasparagine) (β-OHAsn) and τ-L-histindino-D-alanine (τ-HAL). Although there were previous synthetic efforts toward each of these unnatural amino acids, the efforts were not ideal due to expensive starting material, time-consuming steps, and poor regioselectivity. The presented work demonstrates an inexpensive, enantioselective synthesis of β-OHAsn, which can be completed in a matter of weeks, as well as several attempts at a novel regiospecific approach toward τ-HAL, including work on a model study.

Theses and Dissertations
Human adenovirus (HAdV) has been associated with acute respiratory disease (ARD) in adult and pediatric patients in Egypt. Worldwide, adenovirus of species B, C, and E are predominantly associated with ARD. As part of an influenza-like illness (ILI) surveillance program in Egypt, we isolated 99 adenoviruses from 2003 to 2010. Initial identification of the isolates was accomplished with immunofluorescence assays (IFAs) and then confirmed with multiplex and monoplex PCR protocols. Of the 99 isolates, 39 were species B, 54 were species C, and 1 was species E. Additionally, 5 isolates represented co-infections of both HAdV-B and HAdV-C. Molecular typing by …
Simulation Of Field Emission From Carbon Nanotubes Using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory And The Effect Of Nitrogen And Boron Doping, Sherif Tawfik
Theses and Dissertations
We investigated the mechanism of electron field emission in prestine short carbon nanotubes using ab-initio computation in isolated and periodic simulation cells. We computed the evolution of the wave functions using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, where we have utilized the Crank-Nicholson propagator. We found that in prestine carbon nanotubes, emitted charge tends emerge mostly from electrons that are concentrated at the nanotube tip region, unlike metallic tips. The charge beam concentrates into specific channel structures as the wave function approaches the anode. Nitrogen doping of carbon nanotubes improves emission, in line with experimental findings, and the nitrogen dopant closer to …
Things Are In People, People Are In Things: A Phenomenological Approach To H.D.'S Hermione And The Modernist Prosthetic Body, Alison Stone Roberg
Things Are In People, People Are In Things: A Phenomenological Approach To H.D.'S Hermione And The Modernist Prosthetic Body, Alison Stone Roberg
Theses and Dissertations
H.D.'s autobiographical novel HERmione is phenomenological in texture. It portrays both sides of a dynamic process: the individual "creates" the world by adjusting a "psychic lens," projecting a mental space in which objects can appear; yet at the same time, the world imposes itself on the sensing subject. The framework within which this dynamic process occurs is the body; as the novel portrays, the body is the site of juxtapositions and transformations as it comes into contact with the world. In this article, I discuss the ways in which H.D. explores the boundaries and intersections between the human body and …
Heat Shock Proteins As Novel Cancer Therapeutics: Targeting The Hallmarks Of Cancer, Chao Li
Heat Shock Proteins As Novel Cancer Therapeutics: Targeting The Hallmarks Of Cancer, Chao Li
Theses and Dissertations
Molecular chaperones, commonly known as heat shock proteins (HSPs), are essential for mammalian cells to maintain homeostasis, and HSPs function by inducing an ATPase-coupled structural change, followed by interactions with diverse co-chaperones and over 200 client proteins implicated in many critical signaling networks. These highly expressed HSPs participate in the onset and progression of several human diseases including cancer, and their connection with tumorigenesis has facilitated research and clinical trials related to targeting HSPs as a novel anti-tumor therapy. The predominant mechanism of chaperone inhibition is through either disruption of the HSP association with client protein or an altered binding …
The Case For Cultural Genocide: The Formulation Of A Working Definition, Tye Tavaras
The Case For Cultural Genocide: The Formulation Of A Working Definition, Tye Tavaras
Theses and Dissertations
The Genocide Convention is hailed as a great protection mechanism and the one document that will prevent future destruction of groups. This convention however, has a variety of shortcomings that fail to protect groups outside of attempted physical destruction. An article criminalizing cultural genocide is a devastating omission and this paper seeks to create a working legal definition to be used a framework for creating an article or convention to provide such criminalization. Beginning with an analysis of the drafting of the Genocide Convention with particular attention paid to the importance of culture in the foundation of the convention as …
Examination Of Nak-Associated Protein-1 (Nap1) Homo And Hetero-Interactions In The Interferon Pathway”, Richard Call
Examination Of Nak-Associated Protein-1 (Nap1) Homo And Hetero-Interactions In The Interferon Pathway”, Richard Call
Theses and Dissertations
Double stranded RNA (dsRNA), the genomic material of some viruses and a replication intermediate in others, is recognized by multiple signaling receptors that initiate the anti-viral response1. Viruses have developed mechanisms to circumvent the anti-viral response by targeting components of the signaling pathway. An example of one such pathway is the TLR3 signaling pathway, which contains a kinase complex that activates interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), leading to production of type I interferons. The kinase complex consists of a scaffold protein, NAK-associated protein 1 (NAP1), and two kinases, TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK-1) and IκB kinase epsilon (IKKε). A fourty residue …
Enhancing Family Functioning To Buffer Risk During Middle School Transition: Development Of The Multiple Family Group Weekend Retreat., Robert Broce
Theses and Dissertations
Children experience changes in multiple levels of their social ecologies when they transition into middle school (Eccles, 1999; Jozefowicz-Simbeni, 2008). These biological, psychological, social, and environmental changes create increased risk for dropout and other factors related to academic adjustment (Cataldi, Laird & KewalRamani, 2009). For low- income minority children these risks can be magnified by environmental and social factors (Ge et al., 2002). Healthy family functioning, including balanced levels of cohesion and flexibility, has been shown to buffer these risks (Burchinal, Roberts, Zeisel & Rowley, 2008; Olson, 2010; Wampler, Munsch, & Adams, 2002) and was targeted by a Multiple Family …
Accelerated Large-Scale Multiple Sequence Alignment With Reconfigurable Computing, G Scott Lloyd
Accelerated Large-Scale Multiple Sequence Alignment With Reconfigurable Computing, G Scott Lloyd
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA) is a fundamental analysis method used in bioinformatics and many comparative genomic applications. The time to compute an optimal MSA grows exponentially with respect to the number of sequences. Consequently, producing timely results on large problems requires more efficient algorithms and the use of parallel computing resources. Reconfigurable computing hardware provides one approach to the acceleration of biological sequence alignment. Other acceleration methods typically encounter scaling problems that arise from the overhead of inter-process communication and from the lack of parallelism. Reconfigurable computing allows a greater scale of parallelism with many custom processing elements that have …

Theses and Dissertations
Sexual dysfunctions are serious mental health issues that impact an estimated one in three Americans. Due to the complex, relational nature of most sexual dysfunctions, mental health professionals trained to work with couples and their relationship interactions are likely to have better outcomes when treating clients with sexual dysfunction. Data from CIGNA Health Solutions was analyzed to explore differences in therapy outcome for various types of mental health professions when treating clients with sexual dysfunctions. The current research is a retrospective analysis of administrative data that explores whether or not type of profession (i.e. psychologists, Masters of social work, marriage …
Adaptive Threat Detector Testing Using Bayesian Gaussian Process Models, Bradley Thomas Ferguson
Adaptive Threat Detector Testing Using Bayesian Gaussian Process Models, Bradley Thomas Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
Detection of biological and chemical threats is an important consideration in the modern national defense policy. Much of the testing and evaluation of threat detection technologies is performed without appropriate uncertainty quantification. This paper proposes an approach to analyzing the effect of threat concentration on the probability of detecting chemical and biological threats. The approach uses a probit semi-parametric formulation between threat concentration level and the probability of instrument detection. It also utilizes a bayesian adaptive design to determine at which threat concentrations the tests should be performed. The approach offers unique advantages, namely, the flexibility to model non-monotone curves …
