Individual Tree Growth And Yield Models For Red Oak - Sweetgum Stands On Mid-South Minor Stream Bottoms Producing Volume By Log Grade, Jonathan Paul Jeffreys May 2014

Individual Tree Growth And Yield Models For Red Oak - Sweetgum Stands On Mid-South Minor Stream Bottoms Producing Volume By Log Grade, Jonathan Paul Jeffreys

Theses and Dissertations

Bottomland hardwood stands of the Mid-South region of the United States are some of the most productive forests in the country. A large percentage of these stands are owned by nonindustrial private forest landowners, who have little information on which to base management decisions. These stands are, therefore, a largely unmanaged and under-utilized reserve of high quality hardwoods. To provide landowners with a decision-making tool for comparing management scenarios, a growth and yield study was initiated in 1981. One hundred and fifty permanent plots were installed in red oaksweetgum stands. The study has been remeasured three times over the past …

Influence Of Coastal Processes On Speleogenesis And Landforms In The Caribbean Region, Patricia Kambesis May 2014

Influence Of Coastal Processes On Speleogenesis And Landforms In The Caribbean Region, Patricia Kambesis

Theses and Dissertations

Evolution of rocky coastlines is controlled by littoral, biological and fluvial processes. Resultant landforms are overprinted and/or new ones formed as a result of changes in sea level caused by glacioeustasy and/or local tectonics. On carbonate coasts, chemical erosion in the form of karstification takes on a dominant role. Type of karstification is an important factor in understanding carbonate coast evolution and landform development so it is critical to identify type of karstification. In this research, fractal indices were used to distinguish cave and thus karstification type. It was determined that fractal indices effectively differentiated cave types and the indices …

Insights On Protein Structure And Dynamics From Temperature-Dependent Molecular Dynamics And Normal Mode Analysis, Habib Ur Rehman May 2014

Insights On Protein Structure And Dynamics From Temperature-Dependent Molecular Dynamics And Normal Mode Analysis, Habib Ur Rehman

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we have employed two computational approaches, temperature-dependent molecular dynamics (MD) and normal mode analysis (NMA), to gain insights into the structureunction relationships between three structurally-related proteins, each possessing a central alpha/beta core. The three proteins studied here are: pnbCE from Bacillus subtilis, cutinase from Fusarium solani - both belong to the serine hydrolase family - and TTHA1554, from the thermophile Thermus thermophilus. Mutations at the gate residue 362, located at the side-door of the pnbCE enzyme, are known to alter the catalytic activity of this enzyme. In this work the modifications induced by mutating LEU362 on the …

Mechanical And Cultural Practices To Reduce Skinning In Sweetpotato, Bradley Hodge Hayes May 2014

Mechanical And Cultural Practices To Reduce Skinning In Sweetpotato, Bradley Hodge Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

Sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is one of the major tropical root crops of the world and it is widely distributed throughout the tropical and temperate regions of Africa, Asia and the Americas. During harvest and post-harvest handling, the skin can be separated from the underlying tissue of the storage root. Storage root damage contributed to income losses for producers. To minimize these loses, producers set the skin of the sweetpotato by removal of the vines prior to harvest. New mechanical (undercutting) and cultural (biochar) methods were developed and tested. Mechanical undercutting would sever the feeder roots of the plant …

Microtubule Dynamics, Kinetochore Number, And Kinetochore Distribution In Cells Undergoing Mitosis With Unreplicated Genomes, Manuella Rossette Clark-Cotton May 2014

Microtubule Dynamics, Kinetochore Number, And Kinetochore Distribution In Cells Undergoing Mitosis With Unreplicated Genomes, Manuella Rossette Clark-Cotton

Theses and Dissertations

In cells undergoing mitosis with unreplicated genomes (MUG), anaphase is successfully initiated despite the abundance of kinetochores that are attached to microtubules emanating from both spindle poles (merotely). In cultured cells, merotely is associated with lagging at the metaphase plate. Treatment with microtubule-perturbing drugs alters the frequency of lagging, but the effect of these drugs on MUG cells is unclear. In this study, low doses of a microtubule-stabilizing drug, taxol, or a microtubule-destabilizing drug, nocodazole, dramatically increased the frequency of lagging kinetochores in the midbody of MUG daughter cell pairs. Likewise, increasing the kinetochore number increased the frequency of lagging …

Genotype, Nitrogen And Harvest Management Effects On Switchgrass Production, Ramdeo Seepaul May 2014

Genotype, Nitrogen And Harvest Management Effects On Switchgrass Production, Ramdeo Seepaul

Theses and Dissertations

Use of switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) as a forage and feedstock species requires knowledge of fertilizer application rates and harvest timing to optimize yield and quality. Three experiments were conducted at the Brown Loam Branch Experiment Station, Raymond, MS to quantify nitrogen rates, harvest timing, and genotype effects on biomass, nutrient removal, chemical composition and ethanol yield. Dry matter yield varied with N rate, genotype, harvest frequency and timing. Yields among genotypes were: NF/GA992 = NF/GA001 (13.7 Mg ha-1) > Alamo (11.6 Mg ha-1) > Cave-in-Rock (6.1 Mg ha-1). A single (9.5 Mg ha-1) or two harvests annually (10.3 Mg ha-1) produced …

Growth Models And Profile Equations For Exotic Tallow Tree (Triadica Sebifera) In Coastal Mississippi, Nana Tian

Theses and Dissertations

Chinese tallow tree (Triadica sebifera (L.)) has become a threat to Southern United States forestlands because of the rapid colonization. To explore the growth rate of tallow, numerous growth models were constructed with destructive sampling method from oak-gum-cypress (Quercus/Liquidambar styraciflua/Taxodium distichum) and longleaf/slash pine (Pinus taeda/ Pinus echinata) forests in southern Mississippi. Moreover, stem profile was also fitted with segmented profile models: Max and Burkhart (1976), Cao (2009) modified Max and Burkhart, and Clark et al. (1991). Numerous results showed that: 1) diameter at breast height, volume and biomass of tallow grew faster in oak-gum-cypress forest while height grew faster …

Herbicide Safening To Aid In The Establishment Of Three Native Warm Season Grass Species, Jesse Spencer Smith May 2014

Herbicide Safening To Aid In The Establishment Of Three Native Warm Season Grass Species, Jesse Spencer Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Difficulties with stand establishment are a major factor limiting further agronomic use of native warm season grasses. One significant cause of stand failure is competition with rapidly growing annual weed species during the early development of the perennial native grass. Broad spectrum preemergent herbicides can provide the needed weed control, but only if tolerance exists in the desired grass. Herbicide safeners, synthetic compounds that protect crops from herbicide injury, applied as seed treatments offer a potential strategy to achieving the needed herbicide tolerance where it does not naturally occur. This study tested the efficacy of five herbicide safeners (benoxacor, fenclorim, …

A bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), tall fescue [Schedonorus arundinaceus (Schreb.) Dumort., nom. cons.], sericea lespedeza [Lespedeza cuneata (Dum. Cours.) G. Don], and common …

Feasibility Of Consistently Estimating Timber Volume Through Landsat-Based Remote Sensing Applications, Renaldo Josue Salazar Arroyo May 2014

Feasibility Of Consistently Estimating Timber Volume Through Landsat-Based Remote Sensing Applications, Renaldo Josue Salazar Arroyo

Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Institute for Forest Inventory (MIFI) is the only cost-effective large-scale forest inventory system in the United States with sufficient precision for producing reliable volume/weight/biomass estimates for small working circle areas (procurement areas). When forest industry is recruited to Mississippi, proposed working circles may overlap existing boundaries of bordering states leaving a gap of inventory information, and a remote sensing-based system for augmenting missing ground inventory data is desirable. The feasibility of obtaining acceptable cubic foot volume estimates from a Landsat-derived volume estimation model (Wilkinson 2011) was assessed by: 1) an initial study to temporally validate Landsat-derived cubic foot …

A Petroleum Energy, Greenhouse Gas, And Economic Life Cycle Analysis Of Several Automotive Fuel Options, Matthew Carter Doude

Theses and Dissertations

A vehicle fuel’s life does not begin when that fuel is pumped into the tank or the battery is charged. Each kilowatt-hour of fuel that is used has a history traceable back to its original feedstock, be it crude oil, corn, solar energy, or others. In this thesis, a life cycle analysis is performed on E10, E85, B20, hydrogen, and electricity, with the well-to-pump fossil fuel energy use and greenhouse gas emissions compared. Results are presented in the form of either energy or mass per kilowatt of fuel at the plug or at the pump. An analysis of the economic …

Imitation Skill Development In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: Teacher-Directed Versus Child-Directed Tasks, Claire Elizabeth Karlen May 2014

Imitation Skill Development In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: Teacher-Directed Versus Child-Directed Tasks, Claire Elizabeth Karlen

Theses and Dissertations

Imitation, defined as a means by which individuals copy another person's behavior, serves as a natural method of learning for typically developing children (Sevlever & Gillis, 2010). For children with autism, imitation skills are often impaired, which may result in further social and language deficits (Ingersoll, 2008; Whiten & Brown, 1999). The current study directly examined the effectiveness of two imitation training interventions on the development of spontaneous imitation and expressive language skills in young children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Results indicated that no one intervention proved equally effective across participants; however, both interventions positively impacted expressive language development, …

Approaches To Reduce Selection Of Genomic Variants In Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Culture, Marion Riggs May 2014

Approaches To Reduce Selection Of Genomic Variants In Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Culture, Marion Riggs

Theses and Dissertations

Optimizing culture conditions that reduce genomic instability in human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) is an unmet challenge in the field. Results from our lab and numerous research groups demonstrate that hPSCs are prone to genomic aberrations and single-cell passaging increases the rate of genomic alterations. However, single-cell based passaging maintains advantages for scale-up and standardizing differentiation protocols. In this study, we investigated the problem of genomic instability in hPSC cultures with the goal towards identifying and characterizing candidate genes that could contribute to generation and survival of abnormal hPSCs. Based on microarray analysis, we identify ARHGDIA, located on 17q25, as …

Characterization Of Suf Pathway For Fe-S Cluster Assembly In Escherichia Coli, Yuyuan Dai May 2014

Characterization Of Suf Pathway For Fe-S Cluster Assembly In Escherichia Coli, Yuyuan Dai

Theses and Dissertations

Fe-S clusters are critical metallocofactors required for cell function. Because of the toxicity of ferrous iron and sulfide to the cell, in vivo Fe-S cluster assembly is carried out by multiprotein biosynthetic pathways. Escherichia coli contains a stress-responsive Fe-S cluster assembly system, the SufABCDSE pathway, working under iron starvation and oxidative stress conditions. The cysteine desulfurase SufS and its accessory protein SufE work together to mobilize persulfide from L-cysteine. We collaborated with Dr. Laura S. Busenlehner to use hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX-MS) to characterize SufS-SufE interactions and protein dynamics. HDX-MS analysis shows that SufE binds near the SufS active …

Identification Of Microrna Biomarkers In Her2-Positive Breast Cancer, Hossam Tashkandi May 2014

Identification Of Microrna Biomarkers In Her2-Positive Breast Cancer, Hossam Tashkandi

Theses and Dissertations

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is overexpressed in approximately 30% of breast cancer patients with poor prognosis. In addition, microRNAs are small non-coding RNA that have been linked to many cancers. Here we investigate which miRNAs are differentially regulated by HER2 overexpression. Using quantitative reverse-transcription prolymerase chain reaction (QRT-PCR) and matching it with the clinical data acquired from Dvinge, we find five candidate miRNAs. When comparing the miRNAs’ effect on patient survival, only three miRNAs stand as good predictors of patient survival outcome. These miRNAs are miR-146a-5p, miR-181d, and miR-195-5p. When miR-146a-5p is up-regulated, which is the case …

Artificial Dissemination, Brian Fleetwood May 2014

Artificial Dissemination, Brian Fleetwood

Theses and Dissertations

This writing is an experiment in combining the two most important frameworks through which I understand the world, the storytelling traditions of my people, the Mvskoke(Creek), and the rational tradition that began with European Enlightenment era thinking. By weaving allegorical narrative (much of it personal) into theoretical speculation, I draw connections between recollection, truth, and the act of making. This examination of the gaps and connections between seemingly disparate worldviews, runs in parallel to the purpose of my work, wherein I construct fictive symbiotic and parasitic relationships between jewelry and wearer. This work takes advantage of the wearer as environment, …

Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke May 2014

Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke

Theses and Dissertations

The human subject is profoundly interdependent, in relation to other people and to the surrounding environment, both “natural” and technological. Western dualistic thinking creates bounded and oppositional categories and generates a conception of human subjects as autonomous, self-sufficient beings that are transparent to themselves and in control of self, other, and world. This contributes to the ongoing inequalities in society and supports normative hegemony. This dissertation argues that it is imperative to insist on the intersubjective, permeable, and contingent qualities of existence. While this project is preceded by a great deal of theoretical criticism of Western metaphysical dualism, we must …

Signal-To-Noise Measurements And Particle Focusing In Liquid-Core Waveguides, Michael A. Olson May 2014

Signal-To-Noise Measurements And Particle Focusing In Liquid-Core Waveguides, Michael A. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents an analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio in liquid core anti-resonant reflecting optical waveguides (ARROWs) and the application of hydrodynamic focusing to the waveguides. These concepts are presented as a method to improve the detection capabilities of the ARROW platform. The improvements are specifically targeted at achieving single molecule detection (SMD) with the devices. To analyze the SNR of the waveguides a test platform was designed and fabricated. This test platform was then used to examine relationship between the SNR and the location of the excitation region. It was determined that the excitation region should be moved closer …

Design And Experimental Testing Of Nanoinjection Protocols For Delivering Molecules Into Hela Cells With A Bio-Mems Device, Zachary Kendall Lindstrom

Theses and Dissertations

Delivering foreign molecules into living cells is a broad and ongoing area of research. Gene therapy, or delivering nucleic acids into cells via non-viral or viral pathways, is an especially promising area for pharmaceutics. All gene therapy methods have their respective advantages and disadvantages, including limited delivery efficiency and low viability. Nanoinjection, or delivering molecules into cells using a solid lance, has proven to be highly efficient while maintaining high viability levels. In this thesis, an array of solid silicon lances was tested by nanoinjecting tens of thousands of HeLa cancer cells simultaneously. Several molecule types were injected in different …

Planar Cell Polarity And Neurodevelopment, Simon Sun May 2014

Planar Cell Polarity And Neurodevelopment, Simon Sun

Theses and Dissertations

Planar cell polarity (PCP) is a developmental signaling mechanism that establishes a polarity within the plane of an epithelium. PCP has been shown to play a role in guiding numerous neurodevelopmental processes such as convergent extension, neuron migration, and axon pathfinding. Certain commissural neurons in the dorsal spinal cord make a series of guidance decisions en route to the brain: first, a ventral projection along the D-V axis, followed by a midline crossing, and after exiting the floorplate, a dorso-anterior turn along the A-P axis. Here, we provide in vivo evidence that the axons of the Commissural Primary Ascending (CoPAs) …

Understanding The Role Of Stylochus Ellipticus As A Predator Of Crassostrea Virginica In Chesapeake Bay Tributaries, Marion Kensey Barker May 2014

Understanding The Role Of Stylochus Ellipticus As A Predator Of Crassostrea Virginica In Chesapeake Bay Tributaries, Marion Kensey Barker

Theses and Dissertations

Predation may be a key component of the unsuccessful restoration of the Eastern Oyster (Crassostrea virginica), a former keystone species in Chesapeake Bay. Here, I examine the polyclad flatworm Stylochus ellipticus and its potential role as an important predator of C. virginica. Using small-fragment size C. virginica specific DNA primers, oyster DNA was successfully detected in whole organisms homogenates of wild-caught S. ellipticus individuals. Of the 1,575 individuals tested, 68.1% tested positive, thus predation occurred. Predation did not appear to be affected by salinity or temperature; however, season did appear to have an effect on both predation and S. ellipticus …
