Visual Analytics For Software Requirements Engineering, Sandeep Reddy Reddivari May 2014

Visual Analytics For Software Requirements Engineering, Sandeep Reddy Reddivari

Theses and Dissertations

For many software projects, keeping requirements on track needs an effective and efficient path from data to decision. Visual analytics creates such a path that enables the human to extract insights by interacting with the relevant information. While various requirements visualization techniques exist, few have produced end-to-end values to practitioners. In this dissertation, we advance the literature on visual requirements analytics by characterizing its key components and relationships in a framework. We follow the goal-question-metric paradigm to define the framework by teasing out five conceptual goals (user, data, model, visualization, and knowledge), their specific operationalizations, and their interconnections. The framework …

A Data Analytic Methodology For Materials Informatics, Osama Yousef Abuomar May 2014

A Data Analytic Methodology For Materials Informatics, Osama Yousef Abuomar

Theses and Dissertations

A data analytic materials informatics methodology is proposed after applying different data mining techniques on some datasets of particular domain in order to discover and model certain patterns, trends and behavior related to that domain. In essence, it is proposed to develop an information mining tool for vapor-grown carbon nanofiber (VGCNF)/vinyl ester (VE) nanocomposites as a case study. Formulation and processing factors (VGCNF type, use of a dispersing agent, mixing method, and VGCNF weight fraction) and testing temperature were utilized as inputs and the storage modulus, loss modulus, and tan delta were selected as outputs or responses. The data mining …

A Multi-Compartment Model Of The Normal Menstrual Cycle: Integrating Hormonal, Ovarian, And Endometrial Elements, Victoria Lea Wolf May 2014

A Multi-Compartment Model Of The Normal Menstrual Cycle: Integrating Hormonal, Ovarian, And Endometrial Elements, Victoria Lea Wolf

Theses and Dissertations

The uterine endometrium undergoes cyclical phases of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and menstruation under the influence of the ovarian hormones, estrogen and progesterone. Since the data necessary to create a classical kinetic model of these signaling pathways is lacking, we used a Boolean network approach that includes the influences of various growth factors and the differential expression of their receptors under the influence of estrogen and progesterone. Results show a gain in endometrial tissue and loss of tissue during menstruation that mirrors what can be expected over the course of a normal menstrual cycle in women, where the endometrium typically …

Effect Of Double Ovulation On Peripheral Concentrations Of Progesterone, Luteal Blood Perfusion And Hepatic Steroid Inactivating Enzymes, Benjamin Eugene Voelz May 2014

Effect Of Double Ovulation On Peripheral Concentrations Of Progesterone, Luteal Blood Perfusion And Hepatic Steroid Inactivating Enzymes, Benjamin Eugene Voelz

Theses and Dissertations

Progesterone is essential for the maintenance of pregnancy in cattle. Recent trends in decreased reproductive efficiency in dairy cattle have led researchers to believe that increased catabolism and decreased peripheral concentrations of progesterone are at fault. The objective of this study was to determine if the induction of an accessory corpus luteum (CL), via human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), alters blood perfusion of CL, peripheral concentrations of progesterone, or hepatic steroid inactivating enzymes. We hypothesized that the induction of an accessory CL would decrease blood perfusion of the CL, decrease peripheral concentrations of progesterone, and increase clearance of progesterone in the …

The Effect Of Groundwater Withdrawals From The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer On Water Quantity And Quality In The Mississippi Delta, Jeannie R B Barlow May 2014

The Effect Of Groundwater Withdrawals From The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer On Water Quantity And Quality In The Mississippi Delta, Jeannie R B Barlow

Theses and Dissertations

Watersheds within northwestern Mississippi, a productive agricultural region referred to as the Delta, were recently identified as contributors of total nitrogen and phosphorus fluxes to the Gulf of Mexico. Water withdrawals for irrigation in the Delta have altered flow paths between surface-water and groundwater systems, allowing for more surface-water losses to the underlying alluvial aquifer. In order to understand how to manage nitrogen in a watershed, it is necessary to identify and quantify hydrologic flow paths and biogeochemical conditions along these flow paths, which ultimately combine to determine transport and fate. In order to evaluate the extent and role of …

Theses and Dissertations

Information regarding spatiotemporal trends in young-of-year (YOY) fish distributions gives managers insight into recruitment and ultimately adult population variability. In Puerto Rico, limited research has been conducted on YOY distributions with no studies addressing reservoir systems. A comparison of the efficacy of two sampling gears and an assessment of spatiotemporal distributions of YOY fish communities in a tropical reservoir were conducted. Diversity of catch between push nets and offshore light traps were similar, though species composition of catch was different between gears. Inshore light traps collected greater total numbers and diversities of the YOY fish community than offshore traps in …

Natural Regeneration Dynamics Of Red Oak Seedlings In Mississippi Bottomland Forests, Ellen Marie Boerger May 2014

Natural Regeneration Dynamics Of Red Oak Seedlings In Mississippi Bottomland Forests, Ellen Marie Boerger

Theses and Dissertations

Numerous studies highlighted sharp declines in abundance of red oak species (Quercus spp., Section Erythrobalanus) in the southeastern United States. Red oaks are major components of bottomland forests, provide important ecological services, and are a critical source of hard mast for wildlife and high-value timber (Oliver et al. 2005). Bottomland hardwoods are usually managed with natural regeneration, and maintaining a component of red oak can challenge forest managers, given sporadic acorn production (masting behavior), and lack of advance regeneration establishment prior to disturbance. This study investigated the development of hardwood advance regeneration in relation to understory light availability and stand …

Winter Waterbird Use And Food Resources Of Aquaculture Lands In Mississippi, James Stephen Feaga May 2014

Winter Waterbird Use And Food Resources Of Aquaculture Lands In Mississippi, James Stephen Feaga

Theses and Dissertations

The conversion of wetland systems to aquaculture provides alternate aquatic habitats for a variety of waterbirds. In response to the 2010 British Petroleum oil spill, the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) enacted the Migratory Bird Habitat Initiative (MBHI) through which NRCS partnered with landowners to provide additional wetlands and associated foraging habitat for migrating waterbirds. During winters 2011–2013, I estimated abundances of waterbirds, seeds, and invertebrates in six production and idled aquaculture facilities in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley. Wintering waterbirds exhibited similar densities on production (i.e., ~22 birds/ha) and idled (i.e., ~20 birds/ha) MBHI sites. My results suggest production and …

Developmental Effects And Selection Pressure Of Genuity Vt3 Pro Field Corn On Corn Earworm, Helicoverpa Zea (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Michael Benjamin Von Kanel

Theses and Dissertations

Transgenic corn and cotton expressing crystalline (Cry) insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) were commercially introduced in 1996. This technology has greatly improved the control of several key lepidopteran insect pests tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens (Farbricius), pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella (Dyar), and European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner). The corn earworm, Helicoverpa zea, has been more difficult to control using Bt crops and supplemental insecticide applications are often needed to prevent economic losses. A major threat to the longevity of transgenic technology is the evolution of resistance, especially when an insect pest infests both …

Diffusive Gradients In Thin Film (Dgt): A Proposed Method To Find Geochemical Predictors Of Sediment Oxygen Demand, Jonathon Michael Geroux May 2014

Diffusive Gradients In Thin Film (Dgt): A Proposed Method To Find Geochemical Predictors Of Sediment Oxygen Demand, Jonathon Michael Geroux

Theses and Dissertations

Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD) is the fluctuation of dissolved oxygen between the sediment from the overlying water. The method to acquire SOD values is inefficient and troubled by unreliable equipment. Diffusion gradients in thin film (DGT) are proposed as a potential method to collect geochemical proxy measures that can be used as SOD predictors. Field deployment of the DGTs was conducted at two locations to compare recovery and accuracy against ex-situ centrifuge methods. The results indicated DGT can be used as a statistically significant geochemical method. A principle component analysis was used to determine if reduced iron and manganese collected …

Preliminary Investigation Of Cellular Lipid Extraction Using Electroporation As An Enhancement Technique, Robert Mccomas May 2014

Preliminary Investigation Of Cellular Lipid Extraction Using Electroporation As An Enhancement Technique, Robert Mccomas

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the use of electroporation as an extraction method of lipids in oleaginous microorganisms. Electroporation is the process of placing a voltage gradient across a lipid membrane to create pores that vary in size and longevity with voltage magnitude and pulse duration. Once the voltage gradient is removed, the lipid membrane will seal the pore. The use of electroporation on oleaginous microorganisms to extract stored lipids could be a useful tool if the microorganism is allowed to regenerate and produce more lipids. Three high-lipid media were investigated: soybeans, Rhodococcus opacus (bacteria), and Rhodotorula glutinis (yeast). This study investigates …

Alternative Nitrogen For Subsequent Southern Switchgrass (Panicum Virgatum L.) Production Using Cool-Season Legumes, Mitchell Blake Holmberg

Theses and Dissertations

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) has become an important bioenergy crop. Warm, winter temperatures in the southeastern USA allow for fall establishment and winter growth of cool-season legumes that may provide nitrogen to the spring perenniating crop of switchgrass. Data indicates variation due to year and location, but hairy vetch plots provided a greater nitrogen percentage in the subsequent biomass production of switchgrass. In 2011, switchgrass fertilized with 56 kg ha-1 N was greater than the control and in 2012 it was greater than the 28 kg ha-1 N treatment. Variation around the means prevented clear separation among other treatments. The …

Thermodynamic Characterization Of Linker Histone Binding Interactions With Ds-Dna, Venkata Ramana Machha May 2014

Thermodynamic Characterization Of Linker Histone Binding Interactions With Ds-Dna, Venkata Ramana Machha

Theses and Dissertations

Linker histones (H1) are the basic proteins in higher eukaryotes that are responsible for the final condensation of chromatin. H1 also plays an important role in regulating gene expression. H1 has been described as a transcriptional repressor as it limits the access of transcriptional factors to DNA. Linker histone binds to DNA that enters or exits the nucleosome. Several crystal structures have been published for the nucleosome (histone core/DNA complex), and the interactions of the core histone proteins with DNA are well understood. In contrast the location of the linker histone and its interactions with ds-DNA are poorly understood. In …

Transposable Element Content In Non-Model Insect Genomes, Christine A. Lavoie May 2014

Transposable Element Content In Non-Model Insect Genomes, Christine A. Lavoie

Theses and Dissertations

While the study of transposable element evolution has been conducted in several model insect organisms such as Anopheles gambiae, Drosophila melanogaster, and Bombyx mori, little investigation has been conducted into the transposable element (TE) evolution within less commonly examined model and non-model taxa within Diptera. In this work we contributed two analyses to close this gap. First, TEs in the lepidopteran, Heliconius melpomene, were characterized, and it was determined that 25% of the genome is composed of TEs. Second, TEs in oestroid and muscid flies were characterized using survey sequencing rather than whole genomes. Comparative analyses were performed on Haematobia …

Upper Range Thermal Stress Tolerance In Channel And Hybrid Catfish Strains, Heather Ann Stewart May 2014

Upper Range Thermal Stress Tolerance In Channel And Hybrid Catfish Strains, Heather Ann Stewart

Theses and Dissertations

Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) have a broad distribution from Canada to Mexico, suggesting that different strains may have different thermal tolerances. In aquaculture, daily temperature maximums up to 36-40°C and fluctuations of 3-6°C occur, and may be exacerbated by future climate change. To quantify differences in thermal tolerance amongst geographically-distinct channel catfish strains and corresponding hybrid catfish (I. punctatus x [blue catfish] I. furcatus): acute critical thermal maximum (CTmax), and the effects of chronic thermal regimes on growth, survival and differential gene expression were examined. Southern channel catfish had higher CTmax than northern, and channel catfish had higher CTmax than …

Using Transposable Elements As Tools To Better Understand Evolution At The Genomic Level, Roy Nelson Platt Ii May 2014

Using Transposable Elements As Tools To Better Understand Evolution At The Genomic Level, Roy Nelson Platt Ii

Theses and Dissertations

Transposable elements (TEs), also known as jumping genes, are DNA sequences capable of mobilizing and replicating within the genome. In mammals, it is not uncommon for 50% of the genome to be derived from TEs, yet they remain an underutilized tool for tracking evolutionary change. With the increasing number of publicly funded genome projects and affordable access to next-generation sequencing platforms, it is important to demonstrate the role TEs may play in helping us understand evolutionary patterns. The research presented herein utilizes TEs to investigate such patterns at the genomic, specific, and generic levels in three distinct ways. First at …
