The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund
Theses and Dissertations
Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …

An Evaluation Of Two Training Programs Designed To Enable Hostages To Cope More Effectively With Captivity Stress, Thomas Strentz
Theses and Dissertations
In the present study, airline employees undergoing highly realistic but simulated captivity as hostages were given one of three types of prestress training programs. One group of subjects was given Problem (P)-focused training, which emphasized activities which would be useful in actively manipulating the stress situation. A second group was given Emotion (E)-focused training which emphasized techniques designed to help them directly modulate fear and anxiety associated with the situation. A third (control) group was given no specific stress management training. Retrospective data from the Ways of Coping Check List indicated that subjects tended to engage in the type of …

Conceptual Level, Hypothesis Formation Training And Clinical Judgment, Robert William Larsen
Theses and Dissertations
Conceptual level, hypothesis formation training, college grade point average, counselor preparation level, and age were studied to assess their relationship to clinical judgment. The sample consisted of female volunteer social work students, who were divided into training (26 subjects) and control (14 subjects) groups. The training group received hypothesis formation training, and the control group simply observed a counseling session. The subjects responded to the Paragraph Completion Method (Hunt, Butler, Noy & Rosser, 1978) and the Modified Clinical Assessment Questionnaire.
The responses were analyzed in terms of hypotheses that were designed to address: 1. The extent to which the study …
The Relationship Between Client-Therapist Mental Health Value Similarity And Psychotherapy Outcome., Randall Scott Cheloha
The Relationship Between Client-Therapist Mental Health Value Similarity And Psychotherapy Outcome., Randall Scott Cheloha
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between client-therapist pretherapy similarity on mental health values and psychotherapy outcome. Previous outcome research has examined client-therapist similarity on values-in-general but neglected the study of mental health values. Mental health values are defined as a subset of values-in-general, those concerned with judgments of good or poor mental health. A sample of outpatients (N = 60) and their therapists (N = 28) completed the Mental Health Values Questionnaire (MHVQ; Tyler, Clark, Olson, Klapp, and Cheloha, 1983) as a measure of mental health values. The MHVQ consists of eight scales: (a) Self-Acceptance, …

Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland
Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there have been numerous approaches to the study of wife abuse, e.g., sociological, psychoanalytic, and environmental. An approach recently suggested by Walker (1977-78, 1978, 1979a, 1980) incorporates the notion of learned helplessness. Her conceptualization of the psychological characteristics of abused women suggests that such women have a traditional attitude toward the female sex-role, a predominantly external locus of control, and low self-esteem. The present investigation was an attempt to validate Walker's model.
Responses to the Attitudes toward Women Scale (AWS), the Rotter Internal-External locus of control scale (RIE), and the Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) were gathered …

The Relationship Between Locus Of Control, Military And University Environments, And Psychological Well-Being., Edwin Woodrow Gunberg Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between locus of control and psychological well-being for different environmental situations. Two different environments were selected, the military environment as an example of a situation where events are frequently beyond individual control, and the university environment as an example of a situation where individuals have more control over the events in their lives. Internal and external subjects from both environments were compared on psychological well-being, a linear composite of self-concept and anxiety. The experimental hypotheses reflected the expectation that individuals with an internal locus of control would have higher …

Interactionist Strategies For Assessing Personality And Behavior Differences Among Female Intercollegiate Athletes And Nonathletes, Frances Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
Thirty six female intercollegiate team athletes and 40 female non-athlete control subjects were studied in a two-experiment investigation designed to explore the personality patterns of female athletes; to measure any differences in performances of the experimental and control groups attributable to changing conditions, i.e., solo, coaction and competitive; and to explore the interactions of personality variables and performance. The previous research on personality, with Cattell's Sixteen Personality Factor Inventory and female athletes, is not plentiful and frequently in conflict. No previous research could be located that employed controlled competitive conditions with athletes—male or female. In Study 1, the team athletes …

The Relationships Among Family Structure, Family Environment And Satisfaction With College, John R. Lorenz
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationships among family structure, family environment, and satisfaction with college. Items taken from Minuchin’s descriptions of Enmeshed and Disengaged family behaviors were compiled and placed in questionnaire form along with the Family Environment scale of the Minnesota Counseling Inventory. The Family Environment scale was chosen in this study as a way of assessing concurrent validity for the newly selected scale items, which comprised the Enmeshed and Disengaged scales. These three family scales and a modified form of the Hoppock Job Satisfaction Blank for assessing college student satisfaction were administered to seventy-one female and twenty-five male college …

Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager
Early Sibling Relationships, Patricia Mccook Rager
Theses and Dissertations
Most of the richness and beauty of life is derived from the close relationship that each individual has with a small number of other human beings--mother, father, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, and a small cadre of close friends. With each person in this small group, the individual has a uniquely close attachment or bond. Much of the joy and sorrow of life revolves around attachments or affectional relationships--making them, breaking them, preparing for them, and adjusting to their loss.
This study dealt with one of those special attachments, the relationship a child formed with his newborn brother or …
The Ascription Of Mental Illness: Inside Societal Reaction, Kevin H. Ferguson
The Ascription Of Mental Illness: Inside Societal Reaction, Kevin H. Ferguson
Theses and Dissertations
Mental illness is examined as a classification of deviance and as a social process. The labeling perspective provides preliminary concepts and problems for research. An Investigation Between Field Dependence, Sex Role Identification And Attitudes, Male Versus Female Dominated Career Choice, And Dependency Behavior, Patricia A. Torness
An Investigation Between Field Dependence, Sex Role Identification And Attitudes, Male Versus Female Dominated Career Choice, And Dependency Behavior, Patricia A. Torness
Theses and Dissertations
One rather consistent finding from field dependence studies is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that cultural factors and the encouragement of independent behavior are related to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a role in the development of individual differences in field dependence, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependence. The present study was designed as a correlational study to assess sex role identity, attitudes, …
