Stress And Social Support Of Parents With An Adult Mentally Retarded Child, Nancy Patricia Kropf
Stress And Social Support Of Parents With An Adult Mentally Retarded Child, Nancy Patricia Kropf
Theses and Dissertations
Parent-child caregiving is the most basic caregiving situation. However, parents who continue to provide care to an adult mentally retarded child have been an unexamined group of caregivers. This study compared stress levels and social support constellations among these caregivers and two other groups of parents.
The study tested two major hypotheses. Parents who were caregivers for an adult child with mental retardation were predicted to report higher stress levels and smaller social support constellations than the other groups. Two comparison groups were included in the study. One group was parents of an mentally retarded child who did not live …
The Effects Of Methylphenidate On Resource Allocation In The Mental Processing Of Add Children, John R. Cook
The Effects Of Methylphenidate On Resource Allocation In The Mental Processing Of Add Children, John R. Cook
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of Methylphenidate (MPH) on the short-term memory scanning of boys with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) was examined from the perspectives of a linear stages model and a capacity model of information processing. A total of 36, six- to ten-year-old boys participated in three age- and IQ-matched groups. The boys with ADD were selected on the basis of a clinical diagnosis, meeting DSM-III criteria on the SNAP and a score of 15 or more on the Abbreviated Conners Rating Scale (ACRS). They received treatment with placebo and methylphenidate (MPH) for three weeks each in a double-blind, single crossover procedure …

Application Of Library Least-Squares Analysis To Human Whole-Body Counter Spectra Derived From Low Level Gamma Emissions, Hang-See Ong
Theses and Dissertations
The method of library least-square analysis (LLSA) has been applied to gamma ray spectra obtained from the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center whole body counter. The validity of the method was tested under various conditions. Mathematical formulation of the method is presented along with a detailed description of the computer program algorithm used. Special features, schemes and pitfalls of the computer program (or the method as a whole) are discussed in detail
Ecology Of Gray Partridge In North Dakota, John Patrick Carroll
Ecology Of Gray Partridge In North Dakota, John Patrick Carroll
Theses and Dissertations
I studied gray partridge (Perdix perdix) ecology in north-central North Dakota during 1985-87. The primary goals of this study were to identify habitats important to gray partridge survival and nesting, and to provide baseline data on partridge ecology in North Dakota. I captured and radio-tagged 100 gray partridge, mainly during winter. Individuals were tracked by a vehicle-mounted telemetry system until August of each year. Home ranges, movements, habitat use, and survival were calculated by using the telemetry locations. Winter home ranges averaged 117 ha, and were larger than previously reported in North America. Important habitats used by radio-tagged partridge during …
Adolescent Norms For The Eating Disorder Inventory As Related To Personal Variables In Female Adolescents At One Private Urban, One Rural, And One Semi-Rural High School, Betty J. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
The societal preference for a slender body image has caused an increasing number of adolescents to diet or use unusual methods of weight control. Some adolescents progress along the continuum of restrained eating toward the development of pathological eating disorders. In order to identify risk factors in the development of eating disorders, eating attitudes and behaviors of 454 normal adolescents were studied by using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and a personal background questionnaire. The higher the subscale scores on the EDI the more similar the individual's perceptions to those of victims with a pathological eating disorder.
With the exception …

Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick
Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick
Theses and Dissertations
The suppression of the immune response in senescent animals, including humans, is not complete and may be ameliorated by specific interventions. Previous studies have suggested that the replacement of thymus factors lost with age may rejuvenate senescent immune function. Similarly, exogenous growth hormone has been reported to improve senescent immune function in certain mammals. Other studies with the immunomodulator PSK claim to restore tumor-induced immunosuppression even in aged mice. This project investigated the abilities of thymus supernatant, ovine growth hormone, and PSK to rejuvenate different
parameters of the senescent immune response.

An Examination Of The Relationship Between Information Content And Readership In Agricultural Advertising, Nathan J. Huso
An Examination Of The Relationship Between Information Content And Readership In Agricultural Advertising, Nathan J. Huso
Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between information content and Starch readership scores in The Farmer magazine from 1979 through 1985 was investigated. The information content of the agricultural advertisements was determined through content analysis using criteria developed to assess the amount of information that contributes to a rational buying decision. The results indicated that 99.4 percent of the advertisements contained information. There was a decrease in the average number of information cues per advertisement over time. There were no significant positive correlations between the information content and the readership score over time for any of the agricultural product categories studied. There were several …

Variables Related To Nurses' Awareness Level Of The Language Disorders Associated With Cerebrovascular Accidents, Micheal W. Halpenny
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to investigate nurses' levels of awareness of the language disorders associated with cerebrovascular accidents. The subjects consisted of registered nurses from two major hospitals in North Dakota, one hospital in South Dakota, three in Minnesota, and three in Wisconsin. The hospitals and states chosen represent the geographical region known as the Upper Northwest of the United States.
The variables that were investigated to determine levels of awareness were nurses' educational background, years of practice as a registered nurse, and the setting in which the nurses provide patient care. Data were collected through questionnaires that were sent …
Native American Women's Health Care Concerns In Comparison To Health Care Providers, Cheryl Regan Hefta
Native American Women's Health Care Concerns In Comparison To Health Care Providers, Cheryl Regan Hefta
Theses and Dissertations
This investigation sought to determine if differences exist between Native American women and health care provider's perceptions of Native American women’s health care concerns. Understanding of this culture’s concerns may enhance future care and treatment of Native American women and help in the development of culturally based health care.
A convenience sample of 36 Native American women and 32 health care providers, age 21-81, was obtained from an upper midwestern Indian reservation and the surrounding communities. Informed consents were obtained. A self-administered three-part questionnaire was given to each participant to complete on perceptions of health care concerts for Native American …

Restrained Eating : The Effects Of Privacy And Perception Of Having Overeaten On Subsequent Food Consumption, Geraldine T. Merola
Restrained Eating : The Effects Of Privacy And Perception Of Having Overeaten On Subsequent Food Consumption, Geraldine T. Merola
Theses and Dissertations
Herman & Mack (1975) theorized that "restrained eaters," conflicted between social pressure to be thin and biological pressure to be fat, tend to alternately eat very little or a great deal, as they respond to one or the other constraint. According to restraint theory, restrained eaters' chronic dieting induces physiological and psychological states that make them highly susceptible to external disruption of eating controls. Research has shown that when led to believe they have already overeaten (i.e., when they are "preloaded"), restrained eaters will loosen restraints and "counterregulate" (i.e., binge-eat). In contrast, "unrestrained eaters" (i.e., normal eaters) will compensate by …

A Marketing Plan For A Mature Dental Practice, Linda C. Keup
A Marketing Plan For A Mature Dental Practice, Linda C. Keup
Theses and Dissertations
The market faced by a dental practitioner today is radically different from the one twenty years ago. Thus, the mature dental practice must adapt and change in response.
The cultural, social and legal issues which have created today's dental marketplace are examined through a review of the literature.
By means of an internal audit of the staff and a survey of current patients, attitudes toward one dental practice were acquired. Results of those surveys are explored for predictability. Demographic data was also gathered from the surveys, and the market currently served is identified. Additional target markets are identified and appropriate …
