Measurement Of Ascorbic Acid And Dehydroascorbic Acid In Mammalian Tissues Using Hplc With Electrochemical Detection, Debra A. Fry

Theses and Dissertations

The oxidized and reduced forms of ascorbic acid (AA) are reactive and unstable compounds making their measurement difficult. Detection of small amounts of AA and dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA) is essential for determining the biochemical function of the vitamin in cells and subcellular organelles. While a variety of techniques exist which detect millimolar levels of AA, accurate assessment of pmol levels of AA and DHAA in a variety of tissues has not been perfected. In the present study, a method was developed for quantitation of AA and DHAA that combines HPLC separation with the advantages of increased sensitivity and selectivity available …

The purpose of this study was to systematically determine the quantity and intracellular location of both isozyme activities of PEPCK in a number of major and important tissues of several species of mammals and birds. Both the intracellular distribution and quantities of both PEPCK isozyme activities were determined in liver, kidney, gastrointestinal mucosa, and adipose tissue; and the total quantity of the enzyme activity was determined in skeletal muscle, brain, spleen, lung, and heart of fed rat and fed and fasted rabbit, …

Relationship Of Adolescent Self-Image To The Risk Of Pregnancy, Vicki Wessman Downey May 1991

Relationship Of Adolescent Self-Image To The Risk Of Pregnancy, Vicki Wessman Downey

Theses and Dissertations

Adolescent pregnancy remains as one of the most pervasive socio- heaUh problems present in the United States. The health, economic, and social risk concomitant with adolescent pregnancy impacts on the child, mother, father, and society. Adolescent pregnancy, the problem that has not gone away, is an endemic phenomenon requiring long-term systematic intervention. It is imperative that underlying factors which contribute to this problem be identified so that subsequent research and educational programs can impact to reduce the problem.

One of the significant factors in teen pregnancy is low self esteem and self-concept. The purpose of this study was to examine …

Cognitive Functioning Of Male Adult Children Of Alcoholics And Control Subjects While Under The Influence Of Acute Alcohol Intoxication, Bette Bakke May 1991

Cognitive Functioning Of Male Adult Children Of Alcoholics And Control Subjects While Under The Influence Of Acute Alcohol Intoxication, Bette Bakke

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has suggested that adult children of alcoholics (ACAs) are at increased risk for the development of alcoholism. Differences between ACA and control subjects have been reported for a range of cognitive, affective and behavioral measures in addition to certain components of the auditory evoked potential, supporting speculation that biological or psychological markers exist as predictors of future alcoholism. The present study examined 20 males ACA and 20 male control subjects under either placebo or alcohol experimental conditions using cognitive measures (Digit Span, Trail Making, Digit Symbol) at baseline, peak and descent phase of the session that have been …

Theses and Dissertations

Taking Care of the Employees While Cutting Health Care Costs: Can the Private and Public Secotrs Learn from one Another?

In the face of skyrocketing health care costs for employees in both the public and private sector, each must find ways to contain these costs while providing their employees adequate care. The trend has been toward the practice of preventative medicine. Each sector has experimented with and developed different programs for employee health that must operate within the particular constraints of the sector. Public sector examples to be used in the study are public health programs and the old and …

Murine Immune Responses To Herpes Simplex Virus-1 In Relation To Nutrition., Stephen Michael Wright Mar 1991

Murine Immune Responses To Herpes Simplex Virus-1 In Relation To Nutrition., Stephen Michael Wright

Theses and Dissertations

This laboratory has observed significantly different survival rates for male balb/c mice maintained on different diets following infection with herpes simplex virus type I (HSV). The two diets, presumably nutritionally complete, are Purina, an undefined laboratory chow, and Teklad, a defined zinc control diet. This investigation examined the effect of these diets on the production of interferon, anti-HSV antibodies and peritoneal macrophage activity. Animals maintained for five weeks on each of the diets remained healthy, and no visible differences were apparent. Food intake and growth rates were equivalent for the diet groups. The concentration of virus in various organs was …

Autonomic Nervous System Activity And The Perception Of Arousal In Dietary Restrainers And Nonrestrainers., Donald Wayne Preussler Feb 1991

Autonomic Nervous System Activity And The Perception Of Arousal In Dietary Restrainers And Nonrestrainers., Donald Wayne Preussler

Theses and Dissertations

The reasons why some people eat more than others, have more body fat, or develop some type of eating disorder have been related to the concepts of hunger/satiety, appetite, and their underlying mechanisms. Research has focused on both physiological and cognitive factors related to the regulation of eating behavior. The role of the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamic nuclei with putative connections to the autonomic nervous system has been extensively studied. Further, the construct of dietary restraint argues that cognitive factors play a role in the regulation of eating behavior. Few studies have examined the possible role of the hypothalamically mediated …

Geriatic Nurse Practitioner's Health Promotive Behaviors: A Test Of Theory Of Reasoned Action, Sandra L. Venegoni Jan 1991

Geriatic Nurse Practitioner's Health Promotive Behaviors: A Test Of Theory Of Reasoned Action, Sandra L. Venegoni

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to develop an instrument to test the theory of reasoned action (Fishbein & Ajzen, 1975) in a new behavioral domain the health promotive behaviors of geriatric nurse practitioners (GNPs). The two behavioral categories included in the study were health assessment and health teaching, each with its individual index of actions.

A questionnaire was developed to examine the beliefs of a sample of 200 certified geriatric nurse practitioners and to test the relationships of the theoretical model. Names of the subjects were randomly selected from the American Nurses' Association 1989 list of certified GNPs. Ninety-four …

Perceptions Of School Administrators Of The Nurses' Roles In A School Health Program, Vida A. Gorsegner

Theses and Dissertations

Nursing roles in school health programs differ within various school settings. These roles range from traditional nursing activities to nurse practitioner and mental health nurse roles. Literature specific to the roles of nurses in a school health program is limited; however, studies indicate that the school nurse role is multidimensional. Role theory was the framework used for this study. The purpose of this study was to determine school administrators' perceptions of the role of the nurse in a school health program.

The sample profile included 48 school administrators from a two county area in an upper midwest area. The two …

Picture Viewing As A Test Of Attention To Food And Body Image Cues In Restrained Versus Nonrestrained Eaters, Sally Rose Brinza Dec 1990

Picture Viewing As A Test Of Attention To Food And Body Image Cues In Restrained Versus Nonrestrained Eaters, Sally Rose Brinza

Theses and Dissertations

Restrained eaters, those who chronically and severely restrict food intake in order to lose weight, are thought to exhibit thoughts and behaviors similar to those seen in semi-starved and eating disordered (bulimic and anorexic) individuals. A paradoxical tendency to overeat once food restraint is disinhibited has been noted in restrainers. Food and body weight preoccupation and hyperresponsiveness to external food cues have been hypothesized to occur in restrained individuals; however the literature reports conflicting results and these factors have not been thoroughly investigated. Cognitive factors which differentiate restrained eaters from nonrestrained eaters may affect information processing.

The purpose of this …

Integrating Language Arts With Graphic Communications In An Inner City Junior High School, Kurt Proctor Aug 1990

Integrating Language Arts With Graphic Communications In An Inner City Junior High School, Kurt Proctor

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching the youth of today is becoming an important issue. Alarming statistics prove that the problems of illiteracy and high dropout rates are not decreasing. If nothing is done to change the prospects of the 13 million school-aged children currently at serious risk of school failure, says a coalition of eleven education organizations, these children will grow up to become adults who will drain the economy in welfare and social service costs and seriously hamper the nations ability to compete internationally. L. B. Schorr (1988) states that in 1987,"the one million youngsters who leave high school without graduating will be …

Joint Position And Velocity Derived From Muscle Spindle Output: A Computational Approach., Daniel Leroy Ewert May 1990

Joint Position And Velocity Derived From Muscle Spindle Output: A Computational Approach., Daniel Leroy Ewert

Theses and Dissertations

Current experimental evidence suggests that muscle spindles do play a significant role in the sensation of joint position and velocity. However, the dynamic characteristics of muscle spindles are complex and highly variable. Researchers have found, in the primary sensory cortex of primates, neurons whose activities are proportional to joint position and velocity. Some of these neurons were excited only by activating muscles spindles. This leads to the research question: can joint position and velocity be extracted from muscle spindle activity using a neurally-inspired mathematical model. The method of solution included modeling a simple hinge joint with an antagonist and agonist muscle …

The Effects Of Metals On Growth And Nitrogenase Activity Of The Soil Cyanobacterium, Nostoc Commune Vaucher., Charles Lyle Pederson May 1990

The Effects Of Metals On Growth And Nitrogenase Activity Of The Soil Cyanobacterium, Nostoc Commune Vaucher., Charles Lyle Pederson

Theses and Dissertations

The overall purpose of this study was to provide basic data regarding the influence of metals on a free-living terrestrial cyanobacterium, and to demonstrate the utility of laboratory studies for assigning biological significance to field observations on soil-algal ecology.Because Nostoc commune Vaucher is a subaerial inhabitant of soils, it did not respond favorably to traditional liquid culture techniques. Therefore, a filter-culture technique was developed whereby N. commune was grown as a surface film on membrane filters superimposed on an inorganic nutrient agar. Filter-cultures were established by inoculating sterile cellulose acetate membrane filters with a layer of N. commune. Growth rates, …

The "New Age Movement": A Case Study, Zachary Grant Goodell

Theses and Dissertations

Within the last two decades, the United States has witnessed the growth of a phenomenon which the media has referred to as "The New Age Movement". This multi-faceted social pattern includes astrology, meditation, mysticism, and eastern philosophies, the popularity of which have increased significantly in the 1980's. This thesis is a case study of the "New Age Movement". First, I develop a descriptive model of the key ideological themes and organizational structures of this social pattern. Subsequently, I organize this model in terms of several sociologically based theoretical frameworks including activity fads, social movements, and sociocultural shifts, in order to …
