Creation Of Prototype Aircrew Protection Equipment Based On Face Anthropometry, Martin E. Piccus, Gary A. Smith, Brian K. Standley, Tami L. Volk, Linda B. Wildes

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to develop a process which will analyze and group human faces, concentrating on the oxygen mask seal area, into a minimum number of generic yet distinct face types. The shape and size, or form, of the face is described by bending energies. This bending energy provides the features for the grouping of similar face types, while distinguishing representatives for each cluster. The face tariffs are the percentage of faces grouped under a representative face. The representative faces are then transformed Into three-dimensional solids using computer-aided design. A rapid prototype creates the solids or plugs …

Photochemical And Spectroscopic Studies Of Citric Acid And Selected Alphahydroxydi- And Tricarboxylic Acid Complexes Of Iron(Iii)., Ahmad Rezvani

Theses and Dissertations

The overall objective of this work was: (1) to determine the chemistry of organic acids formic, acetic, succinic, malic, tartaric, isocitric, and citric acid in the photoinduced-reduction of iron(III) to iron(II), and (2) to determine some of the factors influencing the quantum yield for production of iron(II) from iron(III) in the presence of citric acid.It was shown that the quantum yields for photoreduction of iron(III) to iron(II) in the presence of the selected organic acids acid depends on the structure and concentration of the carboxylate ligand as well as the pH of the solution. The quantum yields for the photoreduction …

The Effects Of Time Of Testing And Elevated Blood Glucose On Cognitive Performance., Mark Randolph Hill Jul 1993

The Effects Of Time Of Testing And Elevated Blood Glucose On Cognitive Performance., Mark Randolph Hill

Theses and Dissertations

Previous findings have suggested that glucose may enhance performance on memory tasks in rats and humans. However, other studies have shown that the effects of carbohydrates may vary by the time of their ingestion. The present investigation examined accuracy and latencies on a semantic task performed in the morning or evening and under two levels of blood glucose. The task consisted of three subtests. In the first subtest, subjects discerned the physical differences between word pairs. In the second subtest, they looked for word matches, regardless of typographical case. On the third subtest, subjects compared words for membership in the …

Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown Jan 1993

Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Prolonged hyperglycemia, as seen in diabetes, results in nonenzymatic glycation of proteins and DNA. Previous investigation by others has shown that many intracellular proteins are glycated, both, in vivo and in vitro. Nonetheless, only a few proteins have been analyzed for the effect of glycation on their function.Glucose and galactose were found to modify a large number of the lysyl residues in selected cytoskeletal proteins. These results led to the study of myosin and S-1 (subfragment-1 of myosin), first with FITC (fluorescein isothiocyanate; isomer #1) and later with comparatively less reactive sugars (sorbitol, glucose, fructose, and ribose).FITC caused a decrease …

A Prospective Study Of Cancer Patients Developing Nausea And Vomiting In Response To Radiotherapy., Michael Earl Nunley Sep 1992

A Prospective Study Of Cancer Patients Developing Nausea And Vomiting In Response To Radiotherapy., Michael Earl Nunley

Theses and Dissertations

Individuals diagnosed as having cancer are confronted with challenging life and death issues. Medical interventions aimed at retarding or eradicating malignant growths have fortunately met with increasing success over recent years, thus offering patients optimism in the form of either prolonging life or attaining a permanent cure. However, such optimism is not met without risks of suffering distressing treated related side-effects. Perhaps the most unpleasant side-effects facing patients are nausea and vomiting which can be associated with undergoing either chemotherapy or radiotherapy.Over the past decade, research with chemotherapy patients has aided in identifying treatment related and psychological or emotional factors …

A Comparison Of Inpatient And Outpatient Treatment Programs For Bulimia Nervosa, Claudette M. Richter-Reno

Theses and Dissertations

The current study was designed to investigate the effectiveness of an inpatient stay followed by outpatient treatment for bulimia nervosa, in comparison to an outpatient program only. It was hypothesized that bulimics in the inpatient/outpatient group would be receiving the combined benefits of both inpatient and outpatient treatment, thereby demonstrating greater changes in reduction of bulimic symptomatology than subjects in the less intensive outpatient treatment. Thirty-four, adult, caucasian females meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa served as subjects. Nineteen subjects received inpatient/outpatient treatment, while fifteen received outpatient treatment. Subjects completed an initial test packet, including the Beck Depression Inventory …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Maternal And Child Risk Factors To Development And Low-Income Status In Grand Forks County., Kay Elizabeth Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between maternal and child risk factors and the variables of development, low-income status, and multiple births. The sample consisted of 193 children referred to the North Dakota Early Childhood Tracking System in Grand Forks County from 1988 to mid-1991. The referral criteria were based on established, biological, and environmental risk factors. The correlation between development and risk factors was not significant. Low-income status was significantly correlated to maternal risk factors (p $<$.001), short term respiratory problems (p $<$.05), neonatal risk factors (p $<$.05), and single parenthood (p $<$.001). Multiple births were significantly correlated to neonatal risk factors (p $<$.05) and prematurity (p $<$.001).

Stockless Medical Materials Management: Applications For The United States Air Force Medical Service, Thomas M. Harkenrider

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was to study stockless materials management in an effort to determine if it could improve the Air Force Medical Service's supply operations. The main result of this study was a decision support system (DSS) that would evaluate potential savings if stockless materials management were implemented in an Air Force medical treatment facility (MTF). In the process of developing the DSS, stockless materials management was studied in civilian hospitals that had previously converted to stockless materials management. Data included facility bed size, annual medical supply purchases, pre and post stockless medical supply full time equivalents (FTEs), …
