Impacts Of A Mixed Ungulate Community On Aspen Forests: From Landscape To Leaf, Aaron C. Rhodes Nov 2017

Impacts Of A Mixed Ungulate Community On Aspen Forests: From Landscape To Leaf, Aaron C. Rhodes

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the differential effects of an ungulate community (cattle, mule deer, and American elk) on aspen (Populus tremuloides) regeneration pre- and post-fire disturbance. It's first chapter examines the differential effects of cattle, mule deer, and American elk on aspen regeneration across variable topography, climate and forest type; aspen dominant to conifer dominant subalpine forests. We found that each ungulate species, if sufficiently numerous, can cause aspen regeneration failure. Also, high elevation, southern aspect and high winter snow pack increase resilience to ungulate herbivory. Chapter two compares the efficacy of four methods of estimating ungulate impact on …

Fermenting Solutions To New World Problems: Bioremediation Of Blue Agave And Cocoa Pod Wastes, Daniel Hart

Theses and Dissertations

Waste, minimizing it, and maximizing profit from it are major foci of most agricultural production processes today. Waste from two major production processes, namely tequila production and cocoa production, share several characteristics. Both these processes are still carried out as they have been for hundreds of years. They are both relatively concentrated in location; all tequila is produced in a small region of Mexico while cocoa pods only grow in tropical environments within 18° of the equator. In addition, both processes used to produce these commodities remain fairly inefficient; they generate huge amounts of waste that goes mostly unused. With …

An original, cross-sectional survey was created for this study. 187 renal dietitians completed the survey which revealed that only 15.3% of participants felt it is acceptable to liberalize the standard dietary restriction on fruits and vegetables, and 13.6% said the same about the bean and legume restriction. 19.9% are extremely likely …

Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, A Model For Quorum Sensing At The Interkingdom Interface, Timothy Charles Haire Sep 2017

Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, A Model For Quorum Sensing At The Interkingdom Interface, Timothy Charles Haire

Theses and Dissertations

Microbial communities significantly impact the processes of the eukaryotic hosts they colonize. In many cases, symbiotic organisms both pathogenic and mutualistic coordinate their efforts through a process called quorum sensing (QS). QS is driven by low-molecular weight signals that regulate gene expression at threshold inducer concentrations, allowing phenotypic switching to be driven by cell density. These quorum sensing signals are subject to eukaryotic perception, and quorum associated phenotypes can directly influence the growth and development of eukaryotes. Eukaryotic perception of quorum sensing signals has been chiefly studied in plants, and to a lesser extent mammalian systems, yet no delineated model …

Phosphorus Occurrence And Origin In The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer In Northwestern Mississippi, Claire Elise Rose Aug 2017

Phosphorus Occurrence And Origin In The Mississippi River Valley Alluvial Aquifer In Northwestern Mississippi, Claire Elise Rose

Theses and Dissertations

The median total dissolved phosphorus concentration (0.41 mg/L P) of groundwater from the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s stream nutrient criteria (of 0.1 mg/L P) and the national background for phosphorus in groundwater (0.02 mg/L P). A general association between elevated phosphorus and dissolved iron concentrations suggests that reducing conditions that mobilize iron in the aquifer also may facilitate transport of phosphorus. These elevated concentrations of phosphorus may indicate phosphorus in the study area may be concentrated through irrigation return flow and groundwater discharge, and may contribute to the Gulf of Mexico hypoxic zone. …
