The Impact Of A College Wellness Course On Wellness Knowledge, Attitude, And Behavior, Marion L. Askegaard
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in a college wellness course resulted in an improvement in knowledge, attitude, and behavior relating to physical activity, nutrition, and stress management.
Three hundred forty-eight students enrolled in the Wellness course at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, took The Wellness Knowledge. Attitude, and Behavior Instrument during the first class period (pretest) and last week (posttest) of the course.
Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), with repeated measures on one factor, was conducted to determine whether there would be statistically significant differences between the pretest and posttest wellness knowledge, attitude, and behavior scores. Three-way …
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus : Implications For Cardiac Surgery, Karen L. Johnson
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus : Implications For Cardiac Surgery, Karen L. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a pathogen first emerging in Great Britian in 1961. Since that time, it has spread worldwide and caused epidemic infection rates in several countries. It is most commonly spread in the healthcare setting where it is labeled a "nosocomial" infection, frequently infecting patients undergoing invasive medical procedures and immune-compromised patients. Depending on the severity and location of infection in conjunction with the patient's health status, MRSA infection can be mild to fatal. The surgical setting is a key area of concern. Cardiac surgery complicated by MRSA is relatively rare, but when it does occur, …
A Pharmacokinetic Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Chemical Exposure, Sierra H. Suhajda
A Pharmacokinetic Study Of The Effects Of Stress On Chemical Exposure, Sierra H. Suhajda
Theses and Dissertations
Following the Gulf War there were many concerns raised about human exposure to the combination of chemicals and stress. Stress causes several changes in basic functions of a human body, from breathing and blood flow changes to hormonal and enzyme changes, and increased permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Each of these changes can strongly influence chemical uptake, distribution, and accumulation in the body. The purpose of this thesis was to model and predict the changes that will occur when stress is combined with chemical exposure. Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling is one tool that can be used to visualize, predict, and …

Transcriptional Regulation Of A Novel Heat Shock Response And Its Association With Apoptosis In Nb2-Lymphoma Cells., Mingyu Zhang
Transcriptional Regulation Of A Novel Heat Shock Response And Its Association With Apoptosis In Nb2-Lymphoma Cells., Mingyu Zhang
Theses and Dissertations
Virtually all cells respond to heat stress by increased expression or induction of the highly conserved heat shock proteins (HSPs). However rat Nb2-11 cells, a prolactin-dependent preT-cell line displayed an unusual heat shock response following exposure to heat stress (41$\sp\circ$C, 1 hr). There was no evidence of inducible HSP70 expression. Moreover, expression of the constitutive HSP70s and HSP90s decreased during the heat stress apparently reflecting a decrease in mRNA stability. Gel shift assays revealed that heat shock factor (HSF) was activated although its DNA binding rapidly deteriorated. Immunoblotting, using an antibody specific to HSF1, indicated that proteolysis of HSF1 may …

Law Libraries And The Layperson: A Bibliography Of Self-Help Books, Kristen M. Mckeaney
Theses and Dissertations
Although the goal of a comprehensive legal library is to be a resource to professionals and the general public, the issue of providing legal assistance to laypersons via the library is a complex one. Compiling the legal resources to benefit the lay public is challenging. This paper attempts to systematically identify and suggest resources following pre-set criteria of affordability, content usefulness, timeliness and reasonableness of management.
The primary form of this paper is a bibliography following a subject specific format. The bibliography is further defined into sections of legal reference books, internet sites, legal directories, general references and agencies. The …

The Contribution Of Auditory Processing To Adult Age Differences In Memory Performance, Danae J. Lund
The Contribution Of Auditory Processing To Adult Age Differences In Memory Performance, Danae J. Lund
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, there has been increased interest in the changes in neuropsychological functioning which are associated with normal aging. Understanding age differences in neuropsychological functioning is of particular importance in the discrimination of normal aging from the early onset of Alzheimer’s Disease or other age-associated dementia. Older adults have been observed to perform more poorly than younger adults on several auditory memory measures which are commonly included in neuropsychological batteries. Age associated declines on these measures have been reported even in the absence of dementia or other health concerns.
To date, explanations for these age differences have focused on a decline …

Studies On The 13-Carbaartemisinin Antimalarials: Total Synthesis And Iron(Ii) Bromide-Promoted Rearrangement Of 13-Carba-10-Deoxoartemisinin And Analogs, And, Samarium(Ii) Iodide-Promoted Reductive Cyclization Of Ketones Tethered To Nonactivated Olefins., Pingchen Fan
Theses and Dissertations
Part one is the study of 13-carbaartemisinin analogs as potential antimalarial drugs. Based on knowledge of the artemisinin's chemistry, mode of action, and structure-activity relationship, we proposed 13-carba-10-deoxoartemisinin 6 as an orally active antimalarial. Thus, the total synthesis of 6 was carried out and completed in 12 steps with a yield of 2% starting with ($-$)isopulegol. More analogs were produced from an intermediate in the total synthesis sequence: two stereoisomers of 6, 13-carbaartemisinin, and five tricyclic analogs. In general, the 13-carba analogs showed lower in vitro biological activity than artemisinin 1, only a stereoisomer of 6 displayed comparable activity to …

"Yet I Must Submit": Mormon Women's Perspectives On Death And Dying 1847-1900, Julie Paige Hemming Savage
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores Mormon women's experiences with death as revealed in their personal writings from 1847-1900. The study includes an examination of women's involvement in caring for the sick and tending to the dead, as well as an exploration of women's personal reactions to death. A careful reading of Mormon women's writings from this period reveals that Mormonism equipped believers with powerful doctrines and rituals which helped women cope with the sorrow and profound grief that accompanied the deaths of those they loved. In addition, members living in Mormon communities rendered invaluable physical, emotional, and spiritual support to each other …
Generalized Probabilistic Reasoning And Empirical Studies On Computational Efficiency And Scalability, Eric P. Baenen
Generalized Probabilistic Reasoning And Empirical Studies On Computational Efficiency And Scalability, Eric P. Baenen
Theses and Dissertations
Expert Systems are tools that can be very useful for diagnostic purposes, however current methods of storing and reasoning with knowledge have significant limitations. One set of limitations involves how to store and manipulate uncertain knowledge: much of the knowledge we are dealing with has some degree of uncertainty. These limitations include lack of complete information, not being able to model cyclic information and limitations on the size and complexity of the problems to be solved. If expert systems are ever going to be able to tackle significant real world problems then these deficiencies must be corrected. This paper describes …
