Changes In Nursing Students' Knowledge Of Bloodborne Pathogens And Perception Of Safety In Practice From Sophomore To Senior Years In School, Ellen J. O'Connor Aug 1994

Changes In Nursing Students' Knowledge Of Bloodborne Pathogens And Perception Of Safety In Practice From Sophomore To Senior Years In School, Ellen J. O'Connor

Theses and Dissertations

Bloodborne pathogens have received increasing attention since Acguired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) became known in the United States. Until that time, antibiotics, immunizations, and increasingly sophisticated infection control practices had markedly decreased health care workers' occupational risk for contraction of bloodborne and other infectious diseases. From a nursing education perspective, it was important to ascertain knowledge deficits students have related to caring for clients infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and the Hepatitis B Virus (HBV).

Therefore, the purposes of this study were to compare sophomore and senior nursing students relative to: a) their knowledge of bloodborne pathogens (particularly HIV …

Theses and Dissertations

In an examination of heterosexual college students' knowledge, attitudes, risk perception, and behavior as they relate to the prevention of AIDS in this population, the present study included two separate but related studies. The first study examined midwestern heterosexual students': (a) knowledge of HIV risk factors; (b) attitudes toward homosexuality, AIDS, and mandatory HIV testing; (c) sexual and other risk behavior; and (d) self-perception of risk for exposure to HIV. Students (N = 308) completed an assessment battery that included the AIDS Risk Behavior Knowledge Test, the AIDS Attitude Scale, the Sexual Risk Behavior Questionnaire, and a background questionnaire which …

Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth Jan 1993

Pus, Pox, Propaganda And Progress: The Compulsory Smallpox Vaccination Controversy In Utah, 1899-1901, Eric L. Bluth

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the compulsory smallpox vaccination controversy in Utah, 1899-1901. It looks at the two smallpox epidemics during 1899-1901 and follows the boards of health attempts to eradicate smallpox primarily by compelling the vaccination of school children.

Dr. Theodore B. Beatty, secretary of the State Board of Health, championed the effort to vaccinate all Utahns; however, the opposition led by Charles W. Penrose, editor of the Deseret Evening News, produced anti-compulsion and vaccination information which influenced Utahns to generally oppose vaccination. Consequently, the legislature passed an anti-compulsory vaccination statute over the governor's veto to annul the courts decision …

Taking Care of the Employees While Cutting Health Care Costs: Can the Private and Public Secotrs Learn from one Another?

In the face of skyrocketing health care costs for employees in both the public and private sector, each must find ways to contain these costs while providing their employees adequate care. The trend has been toward the practice of preventative medicine. Each sector has experimented with and developed different programs for employee health that must operate within the particular constraints of the sector. Public sector examples to be used in the study are public health programs and the old and …

Murine Immune Responses To Herpes Simplex Virus-1 In Relation To Nutrition., Stephen Michael Wright Mar 1991

Murine Immune Responses To Herpes Simplex Virus-1 In Relation To Nutrition., Stephen Michael Wright

Theses and Dissertations

This laboratory has observed significantly different survival rates for male balb/c mice maintained on different diets following infection with herpes simplex virus type I (HSV). The two diets, presumably nutritionally complete, are Purina, an undefined laboratory chow, and Teklad, a defined zinc control diet. This investigation examined the effect of these diets on the production of interferon, anti-HSV antibodies and peritoneal macrophage activity. Animals maintained for five weeks on each of the diets remained healthy, and no visible differences were apparent. Food intake and growth rates were equivalent for the diet groups. The concentration of virus in various organs was …

Synthesis And Characterization Of A New Fluorine Substituted Nonionic Dinucleoside Phosphonate Analog, 3',5'-Bis(Deoxythymidine) Difluoromethylphosphonate., Patrick Wai-Kwok Shum Jul 1989

Synthesis And Characterization Of A New Fluorine Substituted Nonionic Dinucleoside Phosphonate Analog, 3',5'-Bis(Deoxythymidine) Difluoromethylphosphonate., Patrick Wai-Kwok Shum

Theses and Dissertations

Phosphate-modified oligodeoxyribonucleotide analogs have been extensively investigated for the sequence hybridization arrest of mRNA translation and as biochemical probes of nucleic acid-protein interaction. The goal of our research was to synthesize a new class of nonionic oligodeoxyribonucleotides which structurally closely resembled natural DNA.Our initial research concentrated on the synthesis of bis(deoxythymidine) difluoromethylphosphonate, a dinucleotide analog of 5$\sp\prime$-deoxythymidyl-3$\sp\prime$-deoxythymidine in which a CF$\sb2$H group replaces a phosphate OH. The difluoromethyl group is isosteric and isopolar to an oxygen atom. We chose to model our approach after a scheme devised for conventional phosphodiester synthesis via the protected hydroxybenzotriazole of phosphonic acid. The difluoromethylphosphonate …

Synthesis Of Modified Nucleotides To Incorporate Into Oligonucleotides., Jeffrey Allan Jenson Jul 1989

Synthesis Of Modified Nucleotides To Incorporate Into Oligonucleotides., Jeffrey Allan Jenson

Theses and Dissertations

The use of modified analogs of 2$\sp\prime$-deoxyuridine as probes that incorporate into oligonucleotides are discussed. These probes can be useful in many areas including diagnostics, sequencing and therapeutics, and will be discussed later in more detail. The development of DNA probes is important in the diagnostic area because the use of the probes can diminish dramatically the time needed to diagnose an infection (from weeks to hours). Use of DNA probes for sequencing the genomes of hereditary diseases can help find cures. Fighting infectious disease by blocking replication of the virus using DNA probes is a therapeutic use. These are only …

Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick Jan 1989

Immunomodulators In Senescent Mice, Kevin R. Mccormick

Theses and Dissertations

The suppression of the immune response in senescent animals, including humans, is not complete and may be ameliorated by specific interventions. Previous studies have suggested that the replacement of thymus factors lost with age may rejuvenate senescent immune function. Similarly, exogenous growth hormone has been reported to improve senescent immune function in certain mammals. Other studies with the immunomodulator PSK claim to restore tumor-induced immunosuppression even in aged mice. This project investigated the abilities of thymus supernatant, ovine growth hormone, and PSK to rejuvenate different

parameters of the senescent immune response.

In the first series of experiments, erythroid depleted bone …

Induced Resistance To Ixodid Tick Infestation: Analysis And Isolation Of Antigens., Fred William Olsen Jr. Dec 1988

Induced Resistance To Ixodid Tick Infestation: Analysis And Isolation Of Antigens., Fred William Olsen Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Ticks are both vectors and reservoirs for significant pathogens of man and livestock. They are currently controlled through use of acaracides, but have rapidly developed resistance to every new acaracide produced to date. Alternative methods of control are needed. One proposed alternative is immunologic control, achieved through vaccinations which induce resistance to tick infestation. This proposal stems from the knowledge that cattle and laboratory animals actively acquire resistance to infestation. Immunization with crude extracts of different ixodid life cycle stages or organs has induced limited levels of resistance compared to acquired resistance. Defined tick antigens are needed to study the …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between specific oral contraceptive use and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and to determine if duration of use and content of oral contraceptives were related to CIN. The hypotheses tested in this study were: (1) norgestrel-containing oral contraceptives are associated with more severe levels of CIN, and (2) longer duration of oral contraceptive use is associated with more severe CIN.

Data was collected from 52 clinical records of clients who attended a colposcopy clinic during a four month period. Clients included in the study were utilizing one of five specific oral …

Phagocytic Response During Iron Deficiency., Kathleen Ann Murphy Jan 1983

Phagocytic Response During Iron Deficiency., Kathleen Ann Murphy

Theses and Dissertations

Severe iron depletion has been associated with an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. The purpose of this study was to assess phagocyte function and resistance to infection with Staphylococcus aureus during not only severe, but also moderate and marginal states of iron depletion. An experimental animal model of iron deficiency was developed in BALB/c mice. The amount of dietary iron supplementation was varied to attain different levels of iron deficiency. Tissue iron stores (liver, spleen, granulocyte), hemoglobins, and hematocrits correlated directly to the level of dietary iron supplementation. Comparison of food consumption and body weights of iron-deficient and sufficient animals indicated …

Life Change Events In Patients With Minor Injuries, Janice Vandenburg Keitz Jan 1979

Life Change Events In Patients With Minor Injuries, Janice Vandenburg Keitz

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the time relationship of life change events in young adult patients with minor injuries for which medical attention was sought in an emergency department (ED). Life change events are those occurrences in life which require an alteration in a person's adaptive and coping responses to ease the discomfort associated with the change. Too much change without an increase in adaptation responses may cause loss of control. The manifestation of loss of control under evaluation in this study was the occurrence of a minor injury.

Correlates Of Perceived And Experienced Life Stress, Jerry Allan Boriskin Aug 1977

Correlates Of Perceived And Experienced Life Stress, Jerry Allan Boriskin

Theses and Dissertations

Previous researchers employing objective measures of life stress such as the Social Readjustment Rating Scale have demonstrated an association between life change and illness onset. More recently, because of their apparently superior predictive validity, individualized ratings of stressfullness of life events have been employed. The psychological contributors to perception of life events, as well as psychological correlates to the level of experienced stress, are basically unexplored.

The present study investigated the association of perceived stress and experienced stress with the psychological constructs measured by: the Repression-Sensitization Scale, the Adult Nowicki-Strickland Scale, the Hidden Figures Test, and the Mood Adjective Checklist. …

A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy Jan 1977

A Study Of The Identification Of Medically Important Streptococci, Margaret Antoinette Hardy

Theses and Dissertations

Summary:

1. The type of animal blood used in preparing blood agar plates did not significantly affect the demonstration of hemolysis by any streptococcal species except for S.faecalis. S.faecalis more consistently displayed an alpha reaction on sheep blood agar while expressing a beta reaction on horse and rabbit blood agars.

2. A recommended scheme for identifying streptococci, adaptable to most any clinical laboratory, was developed and is outlined in Table 13.

3. S.agalactiae (group B) was the most frequent beta hemolytic streptococcal isolant. Significantly, it was the only species over-all to be recovered from every clinical source. The CAMP test …
