Educators’ Perceptions And Experiences Of Teachers On Safety Guidelines And Protocol Adherence For In-Person Teaching During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Maria Paros
Theses and Dissertations
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a devastating and long-lasting effect on most of the world. In an attempt to slow the spread of the virus, public health authorities instituted guidelines for schools regarding social distancing, mask wearing, and quarantining, and the U.S. educational system was forced to adjust. This phenomenological study examines, from the perception and experiences of primary school teachers, how teachers returned to in-person education while adhering to CDC guidelines and regulations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fifteen experienced primary teachers in three public school districts across Long Island, New York were involved in the study …
The Transitional Journey From Incarceration To A College Degree Through The Lived Experiences Of Women, Marsha Milan-Bethel
The Transitional Journey From Incarceration To A College Degree Through The Lived Experiences Of Women, Marsha Milan-Bethel
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative narrative study shares the lived experiences of formerly incarcerated women, their reintegration into the community, and their journey to and through college. The eight participants span between 25 and 64 years of age, have spent varying lengths of time incarcerated, and are now either in college or recent graduates of both public and private universities. Research indicates that a large majority of incarcerated women come from economically disadvantaged communities, are vocationally unskilled, and have limited access to in-prison postsecondary programs (Mallory, 2011; Western et al., 2015). However, by earning a college credential, women rebuild their sense of self, …

Homeless Encampments On Railroad Property And Their Effect On Crime Rates: A Multiple Methods Analysis, Michael Everett Jones
Homeless Encampments On Railroad Property And Their Effect On Crime Rates: A Multiple Methods Analysis, Michael Everett Jones
Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. homeless population’s size, vulnerability, and crime victim and offender risk merit further investigation. Valuable studies relating to homelessness and crime have been completed. However, there are missing notes in which a sample populace of homeless encampment sites, and subject matter expert opinions are combined into one study. A relationship tradition exists in the criminology research arena between appearance and esthetics levels in areas as visual cues and criminality. Through the decades, variations in crime rates across different settings have resulted in research about setting appearance and changes in frequency of crimes committed there. The purpose of this study …

Thematic …
Voices Of Strength: An Examination Of A School Based Mentorship Program And The Impact On Underrepresented Students, Arlene Martinez
Voices Of Strength: An Examination Of A School Based Mentorship Program And The Impact On Underrepresented Students, Arlene Martinez
Theses and Dissertations
Marginalized students often feel a greater sense of detachment from their schools in comparison to non-marginalized peers (Bottiani et al., 2017). Mentorship programs provide positive experiences that enhance adolescents’ social, behavioral, and academic development. These programs help disconnected students establish a stronger connection within their school community. This phenomenological study examined the lived experiences of four underrepresented high school mentees. The researcher based the theoretical foundation for the study on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of cognitive development (1978) and Rhodes’ theory of mentorship (2005). The data collection process incorporated various methods including observations, interviews, field and reflection notes, personal documents, and …

Student Barriers And Motivators To Bystander Intervention If Witnessing Potential Sexual Violence On College Campuses, Jaquenette G. Lochrie
Theses and Dissertations
Bystander intervention has received increased attention as a potential sexual violence prevention strategy, primarily to address campus sexual assault (McMahon et al., 2017). Shifting the focus from potential victims and perpetrators, the bystander approach engages all members of a campus community to act by increasing positive attitudes and behaviors related to sexual violence and greater willingness to intervene in pro-social ways. This study examined associations between college students’ bystander intervention behavior and three key factors: (a) perceived self-efficacy, (b) a sense of responsibility to act, and (c) the relationship between the student bystander and the victim or perpetrator. The researcher …

A Person-Centered Approach To The Mediating Effect Of Attention On Personality Similarity And Preference Using Eye-Tracking Technology, Gabriel Jose Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Similarity between personality traits has been observed to be predictive of preference and desirability in social relationships in various situations. Much of the research has approached detecting personality similarity on a trait-specific level using the Five Factor Model of personality or more recently by grouping individual personalities into clustered profiles using latent profile analysis. This study of 93 participants took a person-centered approach by detecting individual differences between participants’ personality profiles and target person profiles using Euclidean distance as a dissimilarity index. We then proposed attention as a mediating factor behind the observed association between personality similarity and preference. Using …
The Association Between Cognitive Flexibility, Childhood Adversity Exposure, And Internalizing And Externalizing Symptoms, Emilie Paul
Theses and Dissertations
Adversity exposure in childhood is associated with greater risk for developing internalizing and externalizing problems throughout childhood and adolescence (Henry et al., 2021). Adversity exposure may confer risk by impacting executive function, including reduced cognitive flexibility, due to the neurobiological consequences of increased stress hormone exposure (Kavanaugh et al., 2017). Previous research has linked adversity exposure to reduced cognitive flexibility in youth (Kavanaugh et al., 2017). Lower cognitive flexibility is also associated with internalizing and externalizing problems including depression, anxiety, and disruptive mood dysregulation disorder in youth and adults (Patwardhan et al., 2021; Stange et al., 2017; Braenden et al., …

What Psychotherapy Dose Is Good-Enough? Comparing Theoretical Models By Weeks And Sessions, Ashley Rottkamp
What Psychotherapy Dose Is Good-Enough? Comparing Theoretical Models By Weeks And Sessions, Ashley Rottkamp
Theses and Dissertations
To determine optimal psychotherapy doses, researchers commonly rely on one of two competing theories, the Dose-Effect (DE) or the Good-Enough Level (GEL) models, to guide their research. Which model one selects is clinically meaningful, as the models have conflicting evidentiary support. Thus, it is essential to ascertain which theoretical model best fits empirical data. The present study compares the applicability and fit of the DE and GEL theories using total sessions and weeks in treatment as predictors within a community-based, unlimited-duration psychotherapy clinic. Significant determinants of treatment success were investigated. Adult participants’ symptomatology was periodically assessed using the Outcome Questionnaire …

Reevaluating Positive Freedom Through The Philosophy Of Amartya Sen With A Focus On Education As A Catalyst For Freedom, Emilie Mathilde Vesten Haakansson
Theses and Dissertations
Education has since ancient times been used as a societal tool to develop and cultivate society’s individuals into participating members. Education which is considered a fundamental human right also holds potential transformative power to enable and empower individuals to exercise their freedom to create a life that aligns with their own values, ideas and goals. However, how effective an educational system can be, ultimately depends on the accessibility and quality of the education as well as the overall system the educational institutions operate in. This thesis explores how education can function as a catalyst for furthering individuals’ freedom through a …
Poverty And Inequality: A New Deal For America’S Most Disadvantaged Communities, Thomas St. Hilaire
Poverty And Inequality: A New Deal For America’S Most Disadvantaged Communities, Thomas St. Hilaire
Theses and Dissertations
The United States, often hailed as the most affluent nation globally, paradoxically grapples with rates of poverty, disadvantage, and inequality that surpass those of its advanced democratic counterparts. The persistence of poverty and inequality in the United States have often been justified by beliefs of welfare dependency, “free market” thinking and utilitarianism. This master's thesis explores the far-reaching moral, political, and economic consequences of America’s high rates of poverty and inequality. It contends that federal action is urgently needed on more robust social programs that target poverty, such as affordable housing, accessible healthcare, greater worker protections, and deepened social capital …

Effects Of Police Hiring & Training On Civilian Complaints: A Case Study Of The Nassau County, Ny Police Department, Shevach Berkovits
Theses and Dissertations
Police agencies and administrations continue to face public scrutiny, consequential poor policing, and costly litigation from within their communities. Newly hired Police officers, trained in the latest police science, can lead to fewer received civilian complaints from the communities they serve. Without established literature and studies, agency leadership and policy-makers' decision-making are constrained to quantifying spreadsheet data, which rarely alter the totality of any micro-level police-related interactions. Therefore, this study asks, how does the amount of newly hired police officers affect the number of civilian complaints received? Theories applied include Risk Management, Societal Security, and Conflict Criminology. The Nassau County …

Connecticut Teachers’ Knowledge Of The Science Of Reading, Barbara Daly-Byrnes
Theses and Dissertations
Learning to read proficiently is an essential skill needed in both academics and life. Without this skill, one’s opportunities are limited socioeconomically, socially, and throughout all daily life. However, there is growing concern that the methodology currently used in many school systems is not preparing children for the rigors of reading in the 21st century. In some states, the situation has resulted in state departments of education mandating reading curricula based on the science of reading. This study explored Connecticut PreK–Grade 3 teachers’ knowledge of the science of reading and the Connecticut Right to Read Act through a socio-cultural lens. …

The Transparency Problem In Higher Education Administration: Using A Grounded Theory To Create A Model For Rebuilding Trust, Linda Romano
Theses and Dissertations
Tuition-dependent higher education institutions face myriad external and internal challenges, including waning public confidence, demographic shifts, systemic sluggishness, and reduced workforces. Research on higher education administration tends to focus on senior-level leaders, with the operational experience of rank-and-file administrators largely absent from scholarly inquiry. This research endeavors to address the gaps in research by centering the experiences of entry and mid-level non-unionized administrators at tuition-dependent institutions. Guided by systems theory and using Kathy Charmaz’s Constructivist Grounded Theory methodological approach, this research presents a grounded theory of broken trust and a foundational pipeline model to mitigate this breakdown in trust and …
