The purpose of this study was to comparatively examine relationships among principal instructional leadership, teacher empowerment, teacher creative practices and student creative problem solving in public and private schools. Specifically, the study examined whether principal instructional leadership, teacher empowerment and teacher creative practices predict students’ problem solving performance in these two different types of schooling (e.g., public schools and private schools). The data source of the study was U.S. data sets of PISA 2012. To make meaningful comparisons, student groups in performing in the top and bottom quartiles problem solving were used in the analyses. The results of the study …
Contributions Of Fatigue, Pain, And Functional Limitation To Future Depression In Cancer Survivors, Thomas Santo Recine
Contributions Of Fatigue, Pain, And Functional Limitation To Future Depression In Cancer Survivors, Thomas Santo Recine
Theses and Dissertations
This study expanded upon Green (2014)’s study and examined the unique contributions of fatigue, pain, and functional limitation to future depression (depression measured at a later point in time) in cancer survivors. The findings demonstrate that functional impairment and fatigue are both strongly associated with subsequent depression. These findings follow from and are consistent with Green’s (2014) study, and demonstrate that functional impairment and fatigue strongly impact ongoing and future depression, with higher levels of functional impairment and fatigue being associated with higher levels of future depression. As a whole, the findings of this study are commensurate with prior research. …

Objective Assessment Of Physical Activity In Adults With Down Syndrome, Jasmine Symone Curtis
Objective Assessment Of Physical Activity In Adults With Down Syndrome, Jasmine Symone Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine whether cut-points developed for the general population provide different estimates of physical activity (PA) levels in adults with Down syndrome (DS) compared to cut-points developed specifically in adults with DS. This study also attempted to objectively measure the PA levels of adults with DS and to determine if they meet the recommended amount of PA to obtain health benefits. Thirteen adults with DS wore an accelerometer to determine time spent in moderate, vigorous, and moderate-to-vigorous PA. Results indicated that different sets of cut-points responded differently in classifying moderate and vigorous PA levels, …

Association Between Polymorphisms Associated With Major Depression, Cognitive Function, And Stress Regulation And Telomere Length In Older Community-Dwelling Adults And In Older Competitive Athletes, Cynthia Elizabeth Perry
Association Between Polymorphisms Associated With Major Depression, Cognitive Function, And Stress Regulation And Telomere Length In Older Community-Dwelling Adults And In Older Competitive Athletes, Cynthia Elizabeth Perry
Theses and Dissertations
Many factors detrimental to healthy aging have been proposed including depression, stress, cognitive decline, and telomere shortening. Of specific interest are the genetic factors that may contribute to these factors and subsequently lead to accelerated telomere shortening and aging, namely the Bcl1, 5-HT, DRD2, and ApoE polymorphisms. We sought to: 1) further clarify the role of depression, stress tolerance, and cognitive decline in aging by examining the effect of associated polymorphisms (Bcl1, 5-HT, DRD2, and ApoE) on telomere length in two samples of older adults and 2) determine the difference in absolute telomere length between the two groups. We examined …
Aging, Discourse, And Ideology, Julia Mckinney
Aging, Discourse, And Ideology, Julia Mckinney
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores the language practices of members of the Andrus Center, a recreational senior center located in the southeastern United States. It specifically examines how “young-old” members, or those who had relatively recently made the transition to older identity, invoked and contested widely circulating ideologies of aging in the course of constructing their local age identities. Rather than treating age as an objective, individual characteristic, as commonly presumed in sociolinguistics, this study highlights the ways in which age identities were relationally and emergently coconstructed. Through analyses of interactional and ethnographic data collected over 18 months, I argue that mainstream …
Linking Discrimination To Health: Does Coping Matter For The Mental Health Of Black Men And Women?, Calley Fisk
Linking Discrimination To Health: Does Coping Matter For The Mental Health Of Black Men And Women?, Calley Fisk
Theses and Dissertations
Efforts to explain the negative association between discrimination and mental health have examined psychosocial responses to discrimination, such as coping responses or resources. However, there is limited research on how these coping strategies affect the discrimination-health relationship among Black Americans. Using data from the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), the present study examines the effect of perceived discrimination on depressive symptoms separately for men and women and tests the mediating and moderating influences of five coping strategies on this relationship. Results suggest that social support partially mediates the negative association between discrimination and mental health for men and women. …

A secondary purpose was to explore if the participants’ supplement use reflected their exercise priorities.
METHODS: Data were collected at a university Wellness Center, or from exercise classes. Participants (N = 216) completed a packet of four questionnaires: Multidimensional …
Motives For Participation In Triathlons Among Midlife To Older Black Women: A Mixed Method Study, Candace Brown
Motives For Participation In Triathlons Among Midlife To Older Black Women: A Mixed Method Study, Candace Brown
Theses and Dissertations
BACKGROUND: Research has established the positive link between physical activity and its impact on health among adults. Generally, as people get older, they are less likely to be active. Black women comprise 13% of the women in the US but constitute 52% of women who are inactive. Existing articles on exercise motivation among Black women have generally assessed sedentary individuals. Little research has examined the motivations to exercise among physically active Black women. METHODS: Guided by the regulators of the Self Determination Theory, the 56 item Motivations of Marathoners Scales for Triathletes (MOMS-T) was used to assess the motives of …

Does Simulation Improve Nursing Student Knowledge, Skills, And Attitudes In Identifying Delirium Superimposed On Dementia?, Sheryl A. Kelly
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is comprised of three manuscripts, to be submitted for publication, exploring the use of simulation in geriatric nursing education. The first manuscript is a literature review. Although, a number of articles exist on the use of simulation in nursing education, there is a paucity of research using simulation emphasizing the care of patients with dementia and delirium as a pedagogical strategy or those using a stringent research design.
The second manuscript provides an overview of two conceptual frameworks (National League for Nursing (NLN)/Jeffries Simulation Framework and situated cognition learning framework) and recommends merging them to guide researchers as …
Baby Boomers And The Vietnam War: A Life Course Approach To Aging Vietnam Veterans, Miles Steven Marsala
Baby Boomers And The Vietnam War: A Life Course Approach To Aging Vietnam Veterans, Miles Steven Marsala
Theses and Dissertations
The sheer size of the baby boomer cohort has prompted a great deal of research on life outcomes and potential social strain or benefit of such a large cohort. A major contingency for the baby boomers was the experience of the Vietnam War. Many young men had their life course trajectories interrupted when they were drafted to military service or enrolled in college in an effort to evade the draft. This study uses the Life Family Legacies data to investigate how the Vietnam War may have affected later-life health outcomes of this cohort. Comparing physical health as captured by activities …
Effects Of The Developmental Environment On Oxidative Damage And Antioxidants In Red-Eared Slider Turtle ( Trachemys Scripta Elegans ) Hatchlings, Lisa Allison Treidel
Effects Of The Developmental Environment On Oxidative Damage And Antioxidants In Red-Eared Slider Turtle ( Trachemys Scripta Elegans ) Hatchlings, Lisa Allison Treidel
Theses and Dissertations
Developmental environments influence many individual phenotypes. However, currently we have a limited understanding of how the developmental environment influences oxidative stress resistance phenotypes. Oxidative stress is defined as a physiological state during which the production of harmful free radicals exceeds the protective capabilities of antioxidants. Variations among adults in susceptibility to oxidative stress can have important consequences for life history strategies and fitness related traits. Our work was aimed at providing insight in to the role that the developmental environment plays on oxidative stress phenotypes in the model oviparous reptile the red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans). Here, we conducted …
Using Polypharmacy Tools To Help Improve The Quality Of Life In Elderly, Jenna L. Kelsch
Using Polypharmacy Tools To Help Improve The Quality Of Life In Elderly, Jenna L. Kelsch
Theses and Dissertations
The aging population in the United States is increasing in numbers and in age. With an increasing elderly population comes increasing comorbid and chronic conditions. Polypharmacy is prevalent in multimorbid elderly patients and is on the rise in the United States. However, it is difficult to prescribe medications for the older adult especially those with multimorbidity. Aging affects the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of medications and leads to changes in how the medication is metabolized, stored, and excreted from the body, along with possible additional side effects. Beers criteria, Drug Burden Index, STOPP/ST ART criteria, Fit FOR the Aged criteria (FORT …
A Comparison Of Beers Criteria And Stopp Criteria In Reducing Polypharmacy In The Elderly., Gayla Barker
A Comparison Of Beers Criteria And Stopp Criteria In Reducing Polypharmacy In The Elderly., Gayla Barker
Theses and Dissertations
The elderly population is expected to double by the year 2050; currently the elderly are the largest consumer of prescription drugs and over the counter drugs (Ortman, Velkoff & Hogan, 2014). Research shows that one-third of the medications prescribed to the elderly in the United States may be unnecessary and using multiple medications increases the risk of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) in the elderly (Gokula & Holmes 2012). ADRs put a patient at higher risk of hospitalization, which increases cost and can be avoided by decreasing the number of medications prescribed and by decreasing the use of inappropriate medications in …
Latitudinal Variation In Lifetime Survival And Reproduction In A Burying Beetle, Clinton T. Laidlaw
Latitudinal Variation In Lifetime Survival And Reproduction In A Burying Beetle, Clinton T. Laidlaw
Theses and Dissertations
Temperature variation experienced across a latitudinal range is tied to changes in lifespan and life history across multiple taxa. Two patterns of adaptation to latitudinal temperature variation have been documented – counter-gradient (or co-gradient) variation, and local adaptation. To determine how natural selection has shaped life history variation in a burying beetle, Nicrophorus orbicollis, we quantified lifetime patterns of reproduction in two populations that represent the geographic and temperature extremes occupied by the species. Lifetime reproduction was quantified at two temperatures that represented conditions typical for each population. Burying beetles from different extremes of their geographic range show considerable variation …

Age Related Decline In Memory: Examining The Mediation Effect Of Processing, Executive Functioning And Intelligence In Normal Adults, Jada J. Stewart
Age Related Decline In Memory: Examining The Mediation Effect Of Processing, Executive Functioning And Intelligence In Normal Adults, Jada J. Stewart
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple mediation analyses that collectively examine the prominent theories of cognitive aging (i.e., Common Cause, Processing, and Executive Decline Hypotheses) along with other cognitive domains that are sensitive to aging are rare. Moreover, having identified that cognition begins to decline as early as 30 years old, few studies have examined the mechanisms that underlie memory change among younger aging individuals. As a result, it is unclear whether relevant mediating variables have been excluded from early research on age-related memory decline, or to what extent rehabilitative strategies are applicable as early interventions for maintaining cognitive functioning into late life.
The present …
Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Specific To Anorexia Nervosa: A Critical Review Of The Literature On Executive Functioning Symptomatology And Cognitive Remediation Treatment Applications Tailored To This Patient Population, Kayleigh Elizabeth Hale
Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Specific To Anorexia Nervosa: A Critical Review Of The Literature On Executive Functioning Symptomatology And Cognitive Remediation Treatment Applications Tailored To This Patient Population, Kayleigh Elizabeth Hale
Theses and Dissertations
Engaging, maintaining, and treating patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) remains a significant challenge for clinicians, hypothesized explanations for which are thought to involve specific executive functioning impairments. The neuropsychological treatment paradigm Cognitive Remediation Therapy (CRT) represents the translation of neurocognitive research into practice, and is thought to remediate neuropsychological symptoms and associated maladaptive cognitive processes. Additionally, the etiological model of AN related to executive functioning provides a conceptual framework for this novel approach to treatment. This study identifies and examines such a model, in addition to CRT protocols. Methodology involved a comprehensive synthesis and critical analysis of the literature pertaining …

Sleep Deprivation And The Negative Effect It Will Have On The Individual's Cognitive Function, Stephen Fisher
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between sleep deprivation and an individual's cognitive function. Cognitive function was evaluated by looking at participants working memory and processing speed. To investigate this extrapolation, data was collected from undergraduate students at Rowan University. Participants were evaluated using an application called sleep time alarm clock to measure their sleep quality, and then measured by the Stroop test to determine their level of processing speed and working memory. Univariate analyses were done to determine if there was any correlational relationship between sleep deprivation and processing speed and working …
Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary Practice Versus Recommended Practice, Graciela Arias
Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary Practice Versus Recommended Practice, Graciela Arias
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the increasing number of culturally and linguistically diverse students within American school systems, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in school settings must be prepared to distinguish between typically developing bilingual students and those with language impairments. The purpose of this study was to identify current practices of school-based SLPs for bilingual language assessment and compare them to both American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) best practice guidelines, and mandates of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). The study was modeled to replicate Caesar and Kohler's (2007) study to include a nationally representative sample. While the survey was opened over 400 times, …
Characterization Of Postural Tremor In Essential Tremor Using A Seven-Degree-Of-Freedom Model, Daniel William Geiger
Characterization Of Postural Tremor In Essential Tremor Using A Seven-Degree-Of-Freedom Model, Daniel William Geiger
Theses and Dissertations
Essential Tremor (ET), a condition characterized by postural and kinetic tremor in the upper limbs, is one of the most prevalent movement disorders. While pharmaceutical and surgical treatment options exist, they are not ideal. Assistive devices have the potential to provide relief to patients but are largely unexplored for ET. Furthermore, prior characterizations of essential tremor have focused on endpoint tremor and provide insufficient detail for designing such a device. We propose and demonstrate a novel method for characterizing essential tremor in the 7 proximal degrees of freedom (DOF) of the upper limb in various postures. In addition, we provide …

Theses and Dissertations
There is evidence that industrialization and urbanization has led to an increase of immigration to urban areas for employment and has led to a change of family structure and connection between parents and adult children in Chinese societies. However, little research has compared different Chinese societies, as well as rural and non-rural regions. This study compared the adult children’s current level of filial piety, between non-rural and rural regions, and between males and females using data from an international study of countries in East Asia. Overall, China reported higher level of filial piety as compared to Taiwan. Moreover, for the …
Community-Dwelling Older Adults' Adherence To Fall Prevention Recommendations, Suzänne Fleming Taylor
Community-Dwelling Older Adults' Adherence To Fall Prevention Recommendations, Suzänne Fleming Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
Falling among older adults is a leading cause of concern due to the known impacts including physical injury, loss of independence, increased health care costs, and mortality. In efforts to decrease the numbers of falls experienced by older adults, healthcare providers assess individuals’ fall risks and provide corresponding fall prevention recommendations. The effectiveness however, of these recommendations, is only as strong as the level of adherence to those recommendations; which has proven low in recent research. Using the theoretical foundation of the Health Belief Model, this study quantified adherence to environmental fall prevention recommendations. Twenty-two community-dwelling older adults participated in …
Elderly Abuse Detection, Jessica Stettner
Elderly Abuse Detection, Jessica Stettner
Theses and Dissertations
With the increasing elderly population, elderly abuse is a growing problem. Health care providers are in a position to screen and detect potential and current abuse situations. Through an observed clinical simulation and literature review, detection and screening of elder abuse is reviewed. The case presented is of a 62-year-old female who is seen in the clinic with her abuser present. Through interviewing the patient red flags of an abusive relationship are apparent. Physical examination of the patient revels braising that does not match the reported mechanism of injury. The need for screening of abuse is evident in the case. …

Dementia Caregivers: An Exploration Of Their Knowledge, Beliefs, And Behavior Regarding Advance Care Planning For End-Of-Life Care, Mariette Klein
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore what knowledge dementia caregivers have about advance care planning (ACP), how they learn to execute formal advance directives (ADs) or have engaged in an informal ACP process, and how they understand their roles as decision makers for the patients. Factors that contribute to the completion of an ACP process such as demographic, psychosocial, and situational factors are identified. From the grounded theory data analysis, a theory emerged about how ACP is accomplished and used by caregivers. Findings reveal that caregivers understand ACP as having the power to shape the dying process for …
