Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank
Sex, Sickness And Statehood: The Influence Of Victorian Medical Opinion On Self-Government In Utah, E. Victoria Grover-Swank
Theses and Dissertations
In the struggle for self-government which occupied the Mormon population of Utah between their entry into the Great Basin in 1847 and statehood in 1896, the issue of polygamy dominated public discussion. The non-Mormon population of the United States generally objected to the practice of polygamy, in large part because of Victorian attitudes towards sexual activity and the presumed physical and mental results of violating Victorian sexual norms. It was assumed by most Americans that polygamy, by violating those norms, caused real physical damage to the Latter-day Saints in Utah; damage that disqualified them from holding full and equal political …

A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson
A Study Of Four Arts Enrichment Activities, Mary Etten-Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The dissertation is a descriptive study of formative research in four arts enrichment activities developed for the elementary classroom. The appendix contains the essential parts of this description. The rationale for developing enrichment activities for the elementary classroom is related to the lack of background and confidence many elementary educators have for the arts in education. The traditional practice leads educators to exclude arts enrichment activities from their programs.
The formative research in this study is based on four enrichment units used by teacher raters who were trained through in-service sessions. They taught the enrichment activities to eighty elementary students. …

A Study Of The Growth And Decline Of North Dakota Towns, 1920-1970, Christopher Troseth
A Study Of The Growth And Decline Of North Dakota Towns, 1920-1970, Christopher Troseth
Theses and Dissertations
Differences in percentage population change among North Dakota incorporated places of 250 to 2,500 inhabitants for the period 1920- 1970 were first explained statistically by means of spatial and economic variables. Additional insight concerning town population change was gained by a more detailed examination of selected towns, in which the number and type of business functions were stressed.
For each decade in the period 1920-1970, the relationship between percentage population change of towns with populations between 250 and 2,500 and four independent variables was measured by means of a stepwise multiple correlation and regression procedure. It was found that a …
A Merging Of The Concept Of Egalitarianism And The Universal Guarantee Of Minimum Competence In American Public Schools: A Historical Summary (1700-1978), Robert H. Boyd
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to historically trace three American educational developments through five specific time periods from 1700 to 1978 and to determine how these developments were related to the origins of the concepts of egalitarianism and a universal guarantee of minimum competence in American public schools.
The developments examined were: the societal expectations for the schools; the make-up of the school population; and the emphasis placed on, and the methods used in, assessing student learning. The specific time periods and their titles were: "The Beginning: 1700-1889"; The Age of Standard: 1890-1915"; "The Age of Testing: 1916-1953"; "The …

Population Changes Of North Dakota's Rural Trade Centers, 1960-1970, Charles L. Durrenberger
Population Changes Of North Dakota's Rural Trade Centers, 1960-1970, Charles L. Durrenberger
Theses and Dissertations
Research in trade relationships and hinterland analysis has shown that rural trade centers do not exist in isolation, but exhibit an interdependence with other rural and urban places. The purpose of this study is to examine relationships among trade centers by measuring their potential for growth.
The construct selected for growth analysis examines rural trade center population changes in relation to the size of rural trade centers, distance from urban centers, and the size of neighboring trade centers, both urban and rural. Trade centers having populations greater than 2,500 in 1970, were defined as urban. All trade centers considered were …
Effects Of Television On Rural Minnesota Viewer Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment, Beverly Brown Schulke
Effects Of Television On Rural Minnesota Viewer Attitudes Toward Capital Punishment, Beverly Brown Schulke
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the relationship between television viewing and attitudes toward capital punishment by making comparisons between viewers watching Canadian television and viewers receiving United States television. The adult population of three rural Minnesota areas was enumerated providing a sample N of 414. These areas were closely matched in all respects except type of television received. The first area receives only Canadian television signals, the second both United States and Canadian television signals, and the third receives only United States television signals. One adult from each household was interviewed in his/her home. High school youths in corresponding areas were also …
The Sage Creek Mountain Local Fauna Of The Bridger Formation Near Lonetree, Wyoming, Steven W. Barker
The Sage Creek Mountain Local Fauna Of The Bridger Formation Near Lonetree, Wyoming, Steven W. Barker
Theses and Dissertations
The Bridger Formation in the Green River Basin has been divided into two members, the lower Black's Fork member and the upper Twin Buttes member. 'Ihe Black's Fork member is composed of' biostratigraphlc zones A and Band the Twin Buttes member is com-posed of biostratigraphic zones C, D and E. Recent workers have found that zones A and B contain the same fauna and therefore represent just one biostratigraphic zone (McGrew 1971, Robinson 1970). Future studies of the biostratigraphic zones of the Twin Buttes member are necessary to determine if the C, D and E zones are valid. Some are …

A Revision Of The Herbaceous Members Of The Genus Atriplex (Chenopodiaceae) For The State Of Utah, K. H. Thorne
Theses and Dissertations
The herbaceous Atriplex species which occur in Utah are revised. This study is based on herbarium specimens and field observations throughout the state. My treatment largely follows that of Rall and Clements (1923). A brief discussion of the history, diagnostic characteristics and phylogeny is given. A descriptive key that includes all taxa has been prepared: type locality, synonyms, general habitat and distribution is reported for each entity. Illustrations and maps are included. One variety is described as new.

Frontier In Transition: A Demographic History Of Benton Country, Minnesota, 1850-1870, Stephen J. Schilling
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to examine closely the transformation of a frontier area into a settled community. The demographic history of Benton County, Minnesota, from 1850 to 1870, is examined in detail. The major emphasis is on the structure of the population and its changes over a twenty-year period. The central goal is to determine if there was a pattern to these chanoes. Generalizations applied to the entire frontier will then be compared to this one county to see if they are valid.
The manuscript census was the major source of information. The demographic information for each individual, …
