Terrain, Climate, And Vegetation In The Badlands Of The Little Missouri River In North Dakota, Paula Himmelheber Lee
Terrain, Climate, And Vegetation In The Badlands Of The Little Missouri River In North Dakota, Paula Himmelheber Lee
Theses and Dissertations
The climate of southwestern North Dakota is typical for the Great Plains of the central and west-central United States. The Rocky Mountains influence the climatic condi tions by providing an orographic obstacle to air circula tion. Statistical analysis through correlation and regres sion of 30 years of climatic data from southwestern North Dakota and nearby stations in South Dakota and Montana is consistent with climatic relationships that have been de fined by previous research. The influence of the Rocky Mountains is quantified through a variable that represents the linear distance from each weather station to the front range.

An Investigation Of Semantic Invariance In Human Speech, David Burton Tarr
An Investigation Of Semantic Invariance In Human Speech, David Burton Tarr
Theses and Dissertations
The present investigation addresses the hypothesis of phonetic symbolism in human speech. As a psycholinguistic and epistemological concept, the phonetic symbol is understood to be a structural a priori in sound which correlates with the semantic properties of physiognomic, muscular tension. An extension of this hypothesis is the assumption that phonemes without conventional meaning in a language can approximate semantic equivalence of ordinary words under appropriate experimental conditions.
This dissertation explores the psychodynamic parameters of phonetic symbol access. Specifically, it makes use of a variety of clinical and experimental tools to tap instinctual processes which could conceivably contribute to phonetic …
Individual Differences In Information Processing Style As Related To Rorschach W/D Ratio., Lisa Sharon Squire
Individual Differences In Information Processing Style As Related To Rorschach W/D Ratio., Lisa Sharon Squire
Theses and Dissertations
The present study was undertaken to determine whether an over-emphasis on whole vs. large detail locations on the Rorschach Inkblot Test, as assessed by the W/D ratio, would be manifested in individual differences in information processing style. It was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the whole direction would perform better on visual information processing tasks which require global analysis of the stimulus configuration and which ostensibly are mediated to a greater degree by the right hemisphere. Conversely, it was hypothesized that subjects with W/D ratios weighted in the large detail direction would perform better on information processing …

Changing Land Use In The Rural-Urban Fringe: A Case Study Of Southwest Grand Forks, Jane M. Wilson
Changing Land Use In The Rural-Urban Fringe: A Case Study Of Southwest Grand Forks, Jane M. Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
Between 1954 and 1980 significant changes took place in southwest Grand Forks. The predominant land use in 1954 was cultivated cropland, which covered 80.5 percent of the total study area. By 1980 cropland had declined to 26.7 percent of the total, with urban land uses such as single family residential, strip development and shopping center making significant increases. As the area became urbanized, problems devel oped. In 1979 the English Coulee unexpectedly flooded, damaging homes and the acute care hospital in the study area. In 1981 developers owed $2.4 million in delinquent special assessments.
In order to describe the land …
Arts Education In A Teacher Education Curriculum: A Model Based On Comparative Analysis Of Arts Education Theories, Jean A. L. Olson
Arts Education In A Teacher Education Curriculum: A Model Based On Comparative Analysis Of Arts Education Theories, Jean A. L. Olson
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the historical role of the arts in America was briefly traced as well as the history of federal interest in the arts and arts education. The importance of arts education for the individual, the school, and society was stated. Four basic tenets of arts education were derived from research and literature which provided criteria for effective arts activities and strategies. These tenets suggest that arts education (1) should be based on experiential, discovery-based, process-oriented approaches; (2) should be viewed as a developmental activity; (3) should focus on the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of learning; and (4) …

The Developing Concept Of Educational Adequacy And The Relationship To Financing Schools In North Dakota., Charles Dewayne Cheney
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to solicit pertinent opinion and data intending to inform policymakers and educators concerning the feasibility and potential consequences of specifying an adequate level of education in North Dakota. National experts and selected North Dakotans interested or involved in educational policymaking were interviewed.Four questions were answered: (1) What are the national trends in defining educational adequacy? (2) Where educational adequacy has been defined, what have the results been? (3) What are the salient issues to be considered if North Dakota undertakes defining/funding adequacy? (4) Who are the predicted "winners" and "losers" if adequacy is defined …

Parasites Of Fishes From Devils Lake And The Souris River In North Dakota, Jerry D. Reinisch
Parasites Of Fishes From Devils Lake And The Souris River In North Dakota, Jerry D. Reinisch
Theses and Dissertations
From 6 September 1976 to 3 July 1977 a total of 596 fish were collected from the Souris River and Devils Lake, North Dakota. These fish, representing six families and seven species, were examined for evidence of parasitism. Invertebrates and abiotic samples also were collected. Water analyses were completed following standard methods. Parasitic infections were confirmed in 87.3% of the total number examined. The Devils Lake collection included 96 fish from the summer season only, whereas those fish collected from the Souris River contained 20 of each dominant species for all seasons. These samples were structured to examine the seasonality …
Initial Settlement Patterns In The Vicinity Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Kurt Paul Schweigert
Initial Settlement Patterns In The Vicinity Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Kurt Paul Schweigert
Theses and Dissertations
The concept that the Great Plains environment has altered or repelled basic institutions of the society which settled the region is examined in this thesis by means of evaluation of the initial settlement patterns in an area of east-central North Dakota. The thesis seeks to identify differences in the traditional or chosen exploitive practices of distinct ethnic or national groups within a sample of Euro-American and American Indian settlers, by means of examination of the ecological sub-zones chosen by each group for settlement locations. The non-ecological historical factors of railroad construction, relative time of settlement, and influences of the Indian …

Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson
Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
My study of the literature of North Dakota began ten years ago, when the topic for the annual writers conference at the University of North Dakota was the literature of the Northern Plains. At that conference I listened to Lois Phillips Hudson, Thomas McGrath, Richard Lyons, and other regional writers. Since that conference, I have been reading the literature of North Dakota and learning about the writers, and I have introduced the literature of North Dakota to my students in Grand Forks and Bismarck. My students, like the rest of us, have had the initial reaction, "Literature--Here?"
This study consists …
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin
Theses and Dissertations
Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.
This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.
An Analysis Of Alternative Educational Delivery Systems In Northwestern Minnesota., Adeline Katie Jaeger
An Analysis Of Alternative Educational Delivery Systems In Northwestern Minnesota., Adeline Katie Jaeger
Theses and Dissertations
The study purpose was to learn the perceived general desirability and also the perceived specific feasibility of nineteen alternative educational delivery ideas, many of which required inter-district cooperation. The population included individuals who had formally served the fifty-two school districts of northwestern Minnesota as representatives for areawide educational planning, or as superintendents of schools, or as both superintendents and representatives. The instrument used to gather data was based upon delivery ideas which resulted from long-range educational planning activities. These activities had been mandated by the Minnesota Legislature in 1976.Five research questions considered (1) role of the respondent during planning, (2) …
Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield
Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield
Theses and Dissertations
Utah County, Utah, and more particularly the Utah Valley area, has undergone an enormous change during the last forty years. Rapid growth and urbanization brings with it the problems of urban sprawl. Controlling this sprawl is determined often times by an effective growth policy. Mapping and analyzing growth patterns and trends is a useful method in determining the effectiveness of the "growth towards the cities" policy of Utah County. Research was conducted by using maps, air photos, and field work in locating the growth history of the county.
Growth has been influenced by several factors among which are the physical, …
Vachel Lindsay: The Dispersed And Prepared Audience., Kenneth Peder Peeders
Vachel Lindsay: The Dispersed And Prepared Audience., Kenneth Peder Peeders
Theses and Dissertations
Vachel Lindsay travelled thousands of miles, subjected himself to a grueling schedule of public appearances and stressed the oral presentation of his poetry over and above simple publication alone. In so doing, he set himself apart from others in the New Poetry movement which began during the second decade of this century. This study documents Lindsay's uniqueness. It does so by exploring, in chapter one, his search for an audience, first, through publication in magazines and through the publication of a volume of his verse, and, second, through oral presentation. It establishes Lindsay's early interest in the voice-to-ear approach and presents …
Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat
Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat
Theses and Dissertations
Old maps are valuable research tools in many fields. Finding and identifying them, however, is often difficult. This annotated cartobibliography attempts to identify all maps of Utah printed before 1900. Entries give the distinguishing features, peculiarities, inaccuracies, and a general description as well as the map's provenance and citations in other lists and bibliographies.
The maps are listed chronologically and include all maps located in research collections in Utah, and in the catalogs of the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library. Although the first entry is dated 1777, the first map of Utah made from actual observation, earlier maps …

Postglacial Ostracod Distribution And Paleoecology, Devils Lake Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, James B. Van Alstine
Theses and Dissertations
Sediment cores were taken from Main Bay and Creel Bay of Devils Lake (in 1975 and 1976) and East Devils Lake (in 1978), within the Devils Lake basin, and from Red Willow Lake (in 1979), a control lake outside of the Devils Lake basin, northeastern North Dakota. The cores were sampled, for the recovery of the ostracods, at 10-cm intervals. Fifteen species of ostracods were present in the studied cores: 8 candonids, 1 cyclocyprid, 3 cyprids, and 3 limnocytherids. Two distinct faunas are recognized. The Devils Lake-East Devils Lake fauna consists of Candona lactea, C. rawsoni, Cyprinotus glaucus, Potamocypris smaragdina, …
