Supramedullary Afferents To The Nucleus Raphe Magnus In The Rat: A Study Using Transcannula Hrp-Gel And Autoradiography Techniques, Susan Mary Carlton

Theses and Dissertations

The nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) is known to play an important role in a descending antinociceptive system through its projections to the spinal cord dorsal horn and trigeminal subnucleus caudalis. Identifying those nuclei which project to NRM is essential in determining other CNS cell groups which could influence analgesic mechanisms by virtue of their connections with NRM.

In an attempt to define NRM afferents, 19 adult Sprague-Dawley rats were stereotaxically implanted with a pellet of HRP gel within NRM and in adjacent areas. A transcannula technique was specifically developed for the subcortical placement of HRP in a gel form. Use …

Synthesis Of 3-(Substituted-Aryl)-1,2,3,4-Oxatriazolium-5-Olates As Potential Hypotensive Agents, Mary Quinn Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Hypertension or high blood pressure is a major cause of illness and death in the United States today.1,2 An estimated thirty-six million people suffer from this disease.3 Prolonged hypertension and its attendant strain on various organs may cause heart failure, brain stroke or kidney damage.4 Usually, a pressure of 140/90 mm Hg is taken to be the dividing line between normotension and hypertension.5,6

The hypertensive condition is generally characterized as either primary (essential) hypertension or secondary hypertension.1 A specific cause can be identified in secondary hypertensive patients, such as, pheochromocytoma or adrenal tumor. These causes …

An Evaluation Of The Central Neurotoxic Effects Of Aroclor 1254, A Commercial Mixture Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, In Mice, Diane L. Rosin Jan 1982

An Evaluation Of The Central Neurotoxic Effects Of Aroclor 1254, A Commercial Mixture Of Polychlorinated Biphenyls, In Mice, Diane L. Rosin

Theses and Dissertations

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial compounds whose ubiquitous environmental contamination has been known since the late 1960's. Incidents of human intoxication have been reported, most notably, the "Yusho" incident that affected over 1600 people in Japan in 1968. A broad spectrum of adverse effects are produced by PCBs, including some neurological symptoms. While examination of the toxic effects of PCBs has received much attention, there has been little work on the neurotoxicity of PCBs. The intent of the experiments presented in this thesis is to provide further information on the central neurotoxicity of PCBs in mice.

A commercial mixture of …

Multivariate Analyses Of Mid-Winter Fattening In Two Species Of Passerine Birds, Michael Harold Shelor Jan 1982

Multivariate Analyses Of Mid-Winter Fattening In Two Species Of Passerine Birds, Michael Harold Shelor

Theses and Dissertations

Although the adaptive significance of daily and seasonal fattening of birds has been studied by many investigators (see Odum, 1965; King, 1972; Blem, 1976a), surprisingly little is known about the interactions of proximate and ultimate environmental factors regulating avian lipid levels. An exception is the study by Evans (1969). He found that lipid levels in Yellow Buntings (Emberiza citrinella) were more closely correlated with long-term temperature averages than with temperatures of the day of capture, or the days preceding or following capture. This is an indication that temperature may be more important as an ultimate control of fattening, through natural …

Hemisphericity And Flexibility In Problem Solving Strategies In Creative Test Performance, Mark D. Schuler Dec 1981

Hemisphericity And Flexibility In Problem Solving Strategies In Creative Test Performance, Mark D. Schuler

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to provide further data regarding the contribution of hemisphericity to the creative process. A flexibility variable was suggested as another contributing factor in the creative process. A set of four questionnaires yielding seven scores reflecting behavioral, personal preference, and personality indices was used to assess hemisphericity. A concept formation task that would theoretically reflect analytic and holistic processing was developed to assess flexibility in problem solving strategies. The hemisphericity and flexibility measures, along with the creativity measure, were administered to 37 females and 13 males. All subjects were right handed with no familial sinistrality.

Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland Aug 1981

Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there have been numerous approaches to the study of wife abuse, e.g., sociological, psychoanalytic, and environmental. An approach recently suggested by Walker (1977-78, 1978, 1979a, 1980) incorporates the notion of learned helplessness. Her conceptualization of the psychological characteristics of abused women suggests that such women have a traditional attitude toward the female sex-role, a predominantly external locus of control, and low self-esteem. The present investigation was an attempt to validate Walker's model.

Responses to the Attitudes toward Women Scale (AWS), the Rotter Internal-External locus of control scale (RIE), and the Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) were gathered …

Initial Settlement Patterns In The Vicinity Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Kurt Paul Schweigert Aug 1981

Initial Settlement Patterns In The Vicinity Of Devils Lake, North Dakota, Kurt Paul Schweigert

Theses and Dissertations

The concept that the Great Plains environment has altered or repelled basic institutions of the society which settled the region is examined in this thesis by means of evaluation of the initial settlement patterns in an area of east-central North Dakota. The thesis seeks to identify differences in the traditional or chosen exploitive practices of distinct ethnic or national groups within a sample of Euro-American and American Indian settlers, by means of examination of the ecological sub-zones chosen by each group for settlement locations. The non-ecological historical factors of railroad construction, relative time of settlement, and influences of the Indian …

Winter And Spring Staging Ecology Of Mallards In South Central Nebraska, Dennis Gerald Jorde Aug 1981

Winter And Spring Staging Ecology Of Mallards In South Central Nebraska, Dennis Gerald Jorde

Theses and Dissertations

Large numbers of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) winter in or migrate through middle and northern latitudes of the midcontinent region in North America. Although an intensively studied species, the wintering and staging ecology of mallards north of traditional areas has received limited attention, leaving waterfowl administrators with limited information for developing management guidelines for mallard populations during these periods of the year.

Mallard activity patterns, foraging strategy, and physical condition were studied on the Platte River in south central Nebraska from mid-December to early April, 1978-80. Local movements, time budgets, food habits, physiology, and energetics during winter and early spring provided …

A Study Of The Relationship Between The Human Will And The Learning Process: An Examination Of Stavrogin, A Character In Dostoevsky's The Possessed, Gurney D. Toews

Theses and Dissertations

The research problem is to examine the epistemological nature of the relationship which exists between the human will and the learning process using the development of a fictional character, i.e,, Stavrogin in Dostoevsky’s The Possessed, as focus for the study.

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze Dostoevsky’s theory of will as that theory describes the educational growth and development of the individual and defines the process by which the individual comes to know his own nature and that of the world. The study derives from the theory of will specific educational principles.

Dostoevsky’s theory of will …

Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson May 1981

Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

My study of the literature of North Dakota began ten years ago, when the topic for the annual writers conference at the University of North Dakota was the literature of the Northern Plains. At that conference I listened to Lois Phillips Hudson, Thomas McGrath, Richard Lyons, and other regional writers. Since that conference, I have been reading the literature of North Dakota and learning about the writers, and I have introduced the literature of North Dakota to my students in Grand Forks and Bismarck. My students, like the rest of us, have had the initial reaction, "Literature--Here?"

This study consists …

The Role Of Women In Education: Antecedents, Current Status, And Change Strategies, Lois J. Fisher May 1981

The Role Of Women In Education: Antecedents, Current Status, And Change Strategies, Lois J. Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Statement of the problem. This historical-philosophical study examines the role of women in education. Currently women hold few positions of leadership or prestige in this profession. While women have long had an important role in education, that role has seldom been a high status position.

Purpose of the study. Understanding the role of women in education requires understanding the influences that have helped to shape that role. Those influences and antecedents are to be found in the subject-matter fields of history, psychology, sociology, philosophy, and education. The explanation and description of this background material provides a philosophical and theoretical base …

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson Jan 1981

Rabbit Heart And Vascular Responses To Carotid Occlusion And Peep With Denervation And Selective Adrenergic Blockade., Mark Robert Magnusson

Theses and Dissertations

Mechanical ventilation with inspiratory positive pressure and positive, end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) has been used to improve arterial oxygenation and to re-expand and stabilize collapsed areas of the lung in patients with non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and adult respiratory distress syndrome. However lung hyperinflation by PEEP results in decreased cardiac output and mean arterial pressure. The interaction of the mechanical and the neuroreflex effects which alter cardiovascular function during PEEP have not been examined in a study designed to evaluate the components (arterial baroreflex, cardiopulmonary mechanoreflex, and mechanical) and their integrated effects. This study examined the cardiovascular responses to 2.5 cm H(,2)O PEEP …

Physical Dependence On Alcohol And Its Relationship With Divalent Cation And Carbon-Dioxide Concentrations, Blood Ph, And Intracellular Brain Ph In Laboratory Rats And Mice., Mark Allan Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

The role of extra- and intracellular acid-base status and divalent cations in the onset and severity of withdrawal from chronic ethanol intoxication was investigated in mice and rats. Body temperatures in both species were significantly decreased throughout withdrawal. While temperature corrected bicarbonate and extracellular pH, and brain Zn('++) concentrations were significantly increased in alcohol-exposed mice, all other parameters monitored in mice and rats indicate the lack of alkalosis or changes in Mg('++) or Ca('++) concentrations during withdrawal. The severity of withdrawal following chronic intoxication was not affected by either 5% or 15% CO(,2) therapy during the withdrawal period. Fifteen percent CO(,2) …

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin Jan 1981

Concepts In American Local History: Community In Winder, Idaho, Lorine S. Goodwin

Theses and Dissertations

Recently the need for a more clearly defined structural basis for American local history has become acute. Concepts used in national history often fall short of the needs of local history. As a result, both professionals and amateurs are producing a rash of community histories without the benefit of adequate guidelines.

This thesis draws together a number of concepts useful in the development of American local history as a viable academic field of study. It tests these concepts in presenting the history of community in Winder, a small, rural population set in southeastern Idaho.

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield Jan 1981

Population Movement And Growth In Utah County, Utah 1940 To 1980, Brian W. Maxfield

Theses and Dissertations

Utah County, Utah, and more particularly the Utah Valley area, has undergone an enormous change during the last forty years. Rapid growth and urbanization brings with it the problems of urban sprawl. Controlling this sprawl is determined often times by an effective growth policy. Mapping and analyzing growth patterns and trends is a useful method in determining the effectiveness of the "growth towards the cities" policy of Utah County. Research was conducted by using maps, air photos, and field work in locating the growth history of the county.
Growth has been influenced by several factors among which are the physical, …

Alterations In Cerebellar Basket, Stellate And Purkinje Cell Dendritic Development Produced By Zinc Deficiency In The Suckling Rat., Christopher Lee Dvergsten

Theses and Dissertations

Rat pups suckled to severely zinc deficient mothers from birth were killed at 21 days of age. The cerebella were then examined by light and electron microscopy. Dendritic development was analyzed on Golgi-stained sections both qualitatively and quantitatively. Impaired pup growth, alopecia, hunched back posture and decreased femur zinc were seen in zinc deficient pups. Zinc deficiency impaired cerebellar development. The cerebellum was smaller and had fewer granule cells. The molecular layer was thinner and there was a persistence of the external granule cell layer. The normal cytoarchitecture of the cerebellar cortex was maintained in zinc deficient pups; however, basket, …

Mechanisms Of Glucose Utilization In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers., Katherine Ann Sukalski Jan 1981

Mechanisms Of Glucose Utilization In Isolated Perfused Rat Livers., Katherine Ann Sukalski

Theses and Dissertations

Net glucose uptake was studied in isolated perfused livers from fed and fasted rates in the presence of discriminant inhibitors of enzymes responsible for glucose phosphorylation. N-Acetyl-glucosamine, a potent inhibitor of glucokinase and hexokinase, significantly inhibited net glucose uptake in livers from fed but not fasted rats. This result could not be explained if glucokinase and hexokinase were the only enzymes responsible for glucose phosphorylation in the fasted state. Under some conditions glucose uptake was inibited by 3-O-methylglucose and by ornithine. Both of these compounds are inhibitors of glucose phosphorylation via the phosphotransferase activity of glucose-6-phosphatase but have no effect …
