Coxsackievirus B4 Induced Diabetes In Cd-1 Mice, Mary C. F. Anderson
Coxsackievirus B4 Induced Diabetes In Cd-1 Mice, Mary C. F. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Most evidence to date clearly indicates that CB4 virus can affect the pancreas of both man and mice during acute infection. Yet, conflicting evidence exists relative to the consequence of the infection in both man and mice. The study described here attempted to provide definitive evidence on the relative role of the virus isolate (i.e. heterogenous virion populations vs. purified clones) in induction of prolonged diabetes-like disease in mice.
Distribution Of Imipramine, Desipramine And Their Principal Metabolites Between Plasma, Red Blood Cells And Brain In Humans And Animal Models, Stuart Chapman Bogema Jr.
Distribution Of Imipramine, Desipramine And Their Principal Metabolites Between Plasma, Red Blood Cells And Brain In Humans And Animal Models, Stuart Chapman Bogema Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
An HPLC prodecure was developed for the simultaneous measurement of imipramine (IMP), desipramine (DMI), desmethyl desipramine (DMD), 2-hydroxyimipramine (2HI) and 2-hydroxydesipramine (2HD) in human, rat and rabbit blood and brain specimens. The HPLC results were validated by comparison to an established GC-MS method.
DMD is a minor metabolite of IMP and DMD in humans. 2HI is a minor metabolite of IMP in most humans. 2HD reaches appreciable concentrations in blood in humans treated with DMI and IMP. Plasma and RBC concentrations of IMP and DMI were compared to improvement in depression in patients treated with IMP. No good correlation was …
Relaxation Therapy As An Adjunct Strategy For The Treatment Of Bronchial Asthma: An Examination Of Pertinent Psychological And Illness Variables, Robert Joseph Marcello
Relaxation Therapy As An Adjunct Strategy For The Treatment Of Bronchial Asthma: An Examination Of Pertinent Psychological And Illness Variables, Robert Joseph Marcello
Theses and Dissertations
Bronchial asthma is described as a relatively common and heterogeneous disorder. The complexity of the pathophysiological process and the myriad of etiological and precipitating factors are discussed. Such factors include: heredity, allergies, and psychological precipitants. The position is taken that regardless of what caused the initial onset of symptoms, psychological factors may contribute to the intractability and severity of the disorder. The utility of Behavior Therapy Techniques such as: Relaxation Therapy, Biofeedback- Assisted Relaxation Therapy, and Systematic Desensitization; as adjunct strategies for the treatment of bronchial asthma is discussed. It is concluded that while each of these arousal reducing strategies …
Transitional Objects, Hypnotic Phenomena And Personality Characteristics, Keith N. Cohen
Transitional Objects, Hypnotic Phenomena And Personality Characteristics, Keith N. Cohen
Theses and Dissertations
In the current investigation aspects of experience and personality in adult life were objectively assessed in relation to the childhood use of transitional objects. Experiences identified as characteristic of the "intermediate area" included those of deep and intense involvement. Hypnotic susceptibility, "absorption" phenomena, and personal interests and pursuits were measured as experiences representative of this realm. The study also sought to establish further correlative links between early use of transitional objects and adult personality traits and characteristics. Information regarding the early attachment to special inanimate objects was obtained through self- and parental-reports to questionnaires designed to survey parameters of object …

"Over The Horizon Of The Years": Laura Ingalls Wilder And The Little House Books, Janet Spaeth
"Over The Horizon Of The Years": Laura Ingalls Wilder And The Little House Books, Janet Spaeth
Theses and Dissertations
"'Over the Horizon of the Years': Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Little House Books" consists of five essays, each of which focuses on an aspect of Wilder's writing which has been overlooked in critical analyses of her writing. The title is taken from the ending of The First Four Years: "'it is better farther on' . . . over the horizon of the years ahead." "Horizon" is a key word in a study of the Little House series, for Wilder had to examine the horizon behind her to write the books, which are autobiographical fiction, while projecting the optimism contained …
Movement And Behavior Of Walleye, Stizostedion Vitruem Vitreum (Mitchell), In Jamestown Reservoir, North Dakota, As Determined By Biotelemetry, Clinton B. Hall
Movement And Behavior Of Walleye, Stizostedion Vitruem Vitreum (Mitchell), In Jamestown Reservoir, North Dakota, As Determined By Biotelemetry, Clinton B. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Radio biotelemetry was used to study the movements and behavior of walleyes in Jamestown Reservoir during the summer of 1980. Four walleyes weighing from 1.7 to 4.4 kg were surgically implanted with radio transmitters. Only one fish could be successfully tracked. It was found that conductivity prevented the reception of radio signals from water deeper than 4.5 m. In 1981, eight walleyes were surgically implanted with ultrasonic transmitters. The ultrasonic transmitters performed as expected. Seven walleyes were successfully tracked throughout the summer. Two of the walleyes appeared to be nomadic and did not form activity areas. Five walleyes formed activity …
Mechanisms Underlying The Digoxin-Quinidine Interaction, Jonathan D. Geiger
Mechanisms Underlying The Digoxin-Quinidine Interaction, Jonathan D. Geiger
Theses and Dissertations
The clinically relevant interaction between quinidine and digoxin was investigated using unanesthetized and unrestrained guinea pigs for in vivo pharmacokinetic and tissue disposition as well as in vitro [’H]-digoxin binding studies using brain region preparations from dog, guinea pig and rat. Quinidine (3 mg/kg) caused significant elevation of plasma levels of digoxin as early as 5 minutes post-injection and the increase persisted for at least 8 hours. Significant decrease (20%) in the volume of distribution of digoxin was observed in quinidine treated animals. The decreased volume of distribution appeared to be due to displacement of digoxin from tissue stores by …
The Interpretation Of Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment As It Applies To A Philosophy Of Leadership For The Educator/Administrator, Fereshteh Nazerzadeh Kermani Gransar
The Interpretation Of Dostoevsky's Crime And Punishment As It Applies To A Philosophy Of Leadership For The Educator/Administrator, Fereshteh Nazerzadeh Kermani Gransar
Theses and Dissertations
The present study has aimed to explore and uncover educational leadership insights which exist in Feodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. This study involves four major parts: a relatively comprehensive literature review, important aspects of the study areas, main disciplinary concepts, and the general status of the knowledge in this area.
Dostoevsky was fascinated by man. He once wrote: "Man is mystery. This mystery must be solved, and even if you pass your entire life solving it, do not say you have wasted your time. I occupy myself with this mystery, because I want to be a man."1

The Effects Of Conceptual Factors On Visual Masking, Damon G. Labarbera
The Effects Of Conceptual Factors On Visual Masking, Damon G. Labarbera
Theses and Dissertations
Potter (1975, 1976) has shown that visual masks can exert effects both at the level of the icon and at higher levels of processing. Her methodology involved presenting pictures in a sequence at very fast rates, in order to mimic naturalistic saccadic viewing. The present study used similar methodology in order to investigate whether a picture which violates an expectation about pictures in that series exerts more of a masking effect than a picture which coincides with the expectation.
Each of 38 subjects was shown 36 sequences of eight pictures. In nine trials, every picture in the trial was drawn …
Mabel Seely: The Development Of Her Mysteries, Jeanne Mcleod Hoversten
Mabel Seely: The Development Of Her Mysteries, Jeanne Mcleod Hoversten
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is an analysis of Mabel Seeley's nine mysteries, written between 1938 and 1957. The mysteries are: The Listening House, Girl Is Strangled (unpublished), The Crying Sisters, The Whispering Cup, The Chuckling Fingers , Eleven Came Back, The Beckoning Door, The Whistling Shadow, and Mischief Afoot (unpublished). The purpose of this analysis is to determine if there is a development in Seeley's writing from mystery to mystery, and to see if a specific formula emerges in the mysteries. The method of evaluation consists of comparing and contrasting the mysteries with each other, looking at: the structure of plot, the …
The Effects Of Desmopressin Acetate (Ddavp) On The Learning Of A Brightness Discrimination In Rats, Deborah Iilene Couk
The Effects Of Desmopressin Acetate (Ddavp) On The Learning Of A Brightness Discrimination In Rats, Deborah Iilene Couk
Theses and Dissertations
Sixty male albino rats received DDAVP, a placebo, or control treatment and were tested on a brightness discrimination task. Three groups (DDAVP, placebo, and control) were tested in the morning and three groups were tested in the evening for possible diurnal influences of DDAVP. The acquisition and reversal of the brightness discrimination, along with the retention of the reversal problem after a five- day retention interval were analyzed. Inspection of forward and backward learning curves plotted for each task revealed facilitated acquisition along with an initial impairment of reversal learning in those animals treated with DDAVP. These results were consistent …
Arsenic: An Analytical Procedure To Determine Its Total Content In Biological Samples And Signs Of Its Deprivation In Rats And Chicks., Eric Oliver Uthus
Arsenic: An Analytical Procedure To Determine Its Total Content In Biological Samples And Signs Of Its Deprivation In Rats And Chicks., Eric Oliver Uthus
Theses and Dissertations
The first section of this dissertation deals with the development of a procedure for the determination of total arsenic in biological samples. Arsine generated from arsenic in dry combusted biological samples was measured by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace. Innovations of the method included the introduction of arsine into the interior of the graphite tube via one internal purge gas port only, the use of three traps to remove water from generated arsine, and the use of Erlenmeyer flasks in the generation of arsine. EDTA was added to the sample mixture to prevent interference from …
Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith
Effects Of Pulsed Electric Fields On Mammalian Cell Membranes, Guy K. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
The effect of pulsed electric fields on cell membranes were studied to investigate the effects of an electric field, per se, on biological systems, without the densometric and other technical problems associated with other forms of nonionizing radiation. Exposure of mouse splenocytes to a high voltage pulse resulted in an increase in membrane permeability to K+ that was dependent on both the electric field strength and the pulse duration. Exposure to a 2 μsec, 3.0 kV/cm pulse elicited a 50% loss of intracellular K+ indicating that the critical transmembrane potential (Vm) at breakdown was 1.26 volts …

The Atrial Response To Ventricular And Atrial Amputation In The Adult Newt, Notophthalmus Viridescens., Timothy James Mcdonnell
Theses and Dissertations
This study describes the ultrastructure of the amphibian atrium and corroborates light microscopic evidence that atrial myocytes are stimulated to proliferate after ventricular wounding. In addition, the atrial response to a direct injury is described at light and electron microscopic levels.Normal atrial tissue from adult newts was processed for TEM. Fifteen days after ventricular wounding animals were injected with ('3)H-thymidine and atrial tissue was processed for TEM autoradiography. Direct atrial injury (DAI) was achieved by removal of a piece of the atrial wall. DAI animals received a ('3)H-thymidine injection at intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days after …
6 Cubicles (Original Drama)., Daniel Warren Landes
6 Cubicles (Original Drama)., Daniel Warren Landes
Theses and Dissertations
6 Cubicles is a three act drama that is best labeled a "tragicomedy." The plot revolves around the life of Hilda Stag, an elderly English professor whose obsessive behavior is best typified by her kleptomania and her mania for watching soap operas. Eventually Hilda's bad habits are chosen by her colleagues as the "sins" of the faculty office for which "atonement" must be made. Hilda thus becomes a scapegoat who is "sacrificed" by her officemates by means of a seemingly harmless prank. Suffering a mental breakdown, Hilda fantasizes herself in a religious soap opera but is victimized here as well, …

A Study Of Aristotle's "De Anima": Perception As An Epistemological Concept., Muhamad Ndaula Lubambula Sansa
Theses and Dissertations
The research problem is to investigate and analyze perception as an epistemological concept in the writings of Aristotle, using De Anima as the focus for the study. The purpose is to identify and analyze the epistemological premises in Aristotle's theory of perception with particular reference to the intellective process. The Aristotelian concepts utilized as the framework are perception, empiricism, imagination, memory, Aristotle's doctrine of potentiality and actuality and his theory of nous.Aristotle held that perception implies both conception and sense perception. He says that in sense perception the sense organ receives the form without its matter and the object actualizes the …

Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble
Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble
Theses and Dissertations
In researching the literary and visual art forms of four Utah Mormon artists/authors, considerable evidence supports the prognosis that natural parallels do exist between the written and visual works of artists/authors. Recent as well as past historical data also confirms this hypothesis.
To implement research personal interviews and written questionnaires were submitted. The resultant data compiled supports the prognosis that this parallelism does exist.

The Relationship Of Frequency And Social Desirability Of First Names With Academic And Sex Role Variables., Debra Ruth Crisp
Theses and Dissertations
Much research has been done to support the notion that name stereotypes exist. These stereotypes appear to be related to the popularity of names. The present study was conducted in an effort to discover whether certain types of names were actually associated with different behavioral or attitudinal factors in the people who possessed those names. For a sample of 1094 University of North Dakota students who were first-time entering freshmen in the fall of 1977, the following data was collected, as much as possible, for every subject: first name; the number of times the name occurred in the population; a social …
Mary And Simon: A Novel., Harry Edwin Eiss
Mary And Simon: A Novel., Harry Edwin Eiss
Theses and Dissertations
Mary and Simon: A Novel chronicles a period in the lives of three generations of two families in the Mid-western United States during a period of roughly thirty years, 1880-1910. In an early scene Simon fishes, apparently unconcerned that some twenty yards away Mary hangs from a tree, dead. The novel then moves back and forth through their lives, enriching the meaning and significance of this initial scene. Both the structure and the poetic truth of the novel are based on the principle of Theme-and-Variation, an important principle of art, particularly in music, the principle by which the main idea or …

Studies On Hepatic Glucose-6-Phosphatase And Glucokinase., Phillip Lee Stepanik
Theses and Dissertations
Studies of the effects of micromolar concentrations of a variety of di- and trivalent cations on glucokinase and hexokinase activities of rat liver found potent inhibition of both enzymes by Cu('+2) or Cr('+3). As determined by the Dixon and the Cornish-Bowden graphical methods of analysis for enzyme inhibition, Cr('+3) was a mixed inhibitor of glucokinase when either D-glucose or ATP and MgCl(,2) are the substrates varied and Cu('+2) was a competitive inhibitor of gluokinase when D-glucose is the substrate varied. The preference of glucose-6-phosphatase to catalyze glucose-6-P hydrolysis via the glucose-6-P phosphohydrolase reaction was compared to its synthesis via the phosphotransferase …
