Ormsby Macknight Mitchel And The Railroad: A Study Of The Significance Of Lines Of Communications In The Civil War, 1861-1862, Michael Robert Terry Dec 1984

Ormsby Macknight Mitchel And The Railroad: A Study Of The Significance Of Lines Of Communications In The Civil War, 1861-1862, Michael Robert Terry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes a minor campaign of the American Civil War, but one which illustrates the importance of the railroad, as a line of communications, to strategy. In the Spring of 1862, the Union Army in the west concentrated at Pittsburg Landing, in Tennessee, preparatory to an advance south on Corinth, Mississippi. General Ormsby Macknight Mitchel, in command of the Third Division of the Army of the Ohio, was given the defensive duty of safeguarding the Federal left, which included Middle Tennessee, against any Confederate threat from Chattanooga. Instead, Mitchel advanced to and captured Huntsville, Alabama.

This action provided several …

The Omnibus Bill Of 1889: Statehood For Dakota Territory, Julie Marvyl Andresen Koch Dec 1984

The Omnibus Bill Of 1889: Statehood For Dakota Territory, Julie Marvyl Andresen Koch

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the Statehood history of the present-day states of North and South Dakota. They were part of the Territory of Dakota during the years of 1861-1889, their ultimate division occurring only after a long and bitter eighteen-year struggle.

The prime objective of this thesis is to pinpoint precisely the reasons why statehood for the Dakotas took so many years. It seeks to determine who supported and who opposed admission, both in Dakota Territory and in the United States Congress, and investigates the reasons admission was so long delayed. Specific investigation of the Fiftieth Congress, 1888-1889, is necessary because …

Heuristics, Schemas And Biased Social Judgement: An Explanation Of The Reports Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash Dec 1984

Heuristics, Schemas And Biased Social Judgement: An Explanation Of The Reports Of The Sources Of Self-Knowledge, David L. Nash

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated subjects' reports of the sources of self-knowlege in light of the growing literature about the shortcomings of social judgment. The hypothesis of this study was the subjects' tendency to report self-observation at the expense of feedback and social comparison as the best source of self-knowledge is based on an implicit evaluation bias similar to Schlenker's (1980) notion of "self-projection" and Jellison and Greens' (1981) "norm of internality". It was predicted that subjects' intuitive notions about the sources are such that self-observation is seen as a generally "better" method of self-knowledge than feedback which, in turn, is better …

Touring A Children's Theater Production Designed For Grades 1 Through 6, Paula D. Lindekugel

Theses and Dissertations

Very little is done with the elementary theater programs in the North Dakota school systems. To test the feasibility and ac ceptability of a dramatic production designed for grades one through six, Aurand Harris' Androcles and the Lion was chosen, designed and directed for a tour production. The p ay was presented in eight northeastern North Dakota schools to a total audience numbering over two thousand students.

To determine a response of the acceptability to such a produc tion a pre- and post-one shot Likert design survey was implemented and results were analyzed.

Surveys'show that the production was well received …

An Analysis Of A Nonverbal Training Program's Effect Upon Business Communications Students' Sensitivity To Nonverbal Facial Expressions, Larry R. Honl

Theses and Dissertations

Problem. The problem of this study was to determine if a specific training program in nonverbal facial communication for business communications students affects their sensitivity to nonverbal facial cues. A secondary problem was to determine if there was a difference between those groups trained in nonverbal facial communication and their sensitivity to para-language and kinesics (areas that received no formal training) and groups who received no such formal training.

Procedures. The study was conducted during the second semester of the 1982-83 school year. The study involved eight business communication classes, four teachers, and two post-secondary schools.

Of the 202 students …

Caffeine And Free Recall, George Erikson May 1984

Caffeine And Free Recall, George Erikson

Theses and Dissertations

Caffeine is said to increase alertness and improve attention. However, the research which has examined the relationship between caffeine and attention has been atheoretical with respect to current theories of information processing. Therefore, the specific aspects of information processing that caffeine influences cannot be ascertained by the existing data. The purpose of the existing study was to examine the effect of caffeine on memory performance using a task that has theoretically and empirically discernable component processes. Specifically, the present study assessed whether caffeine selectively influences short or long term memory by examining subjects' immediate memory for word lists (cf. Glanzer …

The Role Of Symbolic Form In The Bedtime Nature Stories Of Thornton W. Burgess, Ronald A. Royer May 1984

The Role Of Symbolic Form In The Bedtime Nature Stories Of Thornton W. Burgess, Ronald A. Royer

Theses and Dissertations

The task of this research is to examine the epistemological premises inherent in Thornton W. Burgess' nature stories for children as defined by Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbolic forms. Its purpose is to identify these premises, examine them in light of Cassirer's philosophy, and explore their relevance to education theory.

Burgess holds that children are characterized by their potentiality, that their interest in animals is inherent, that they instinctively sense themselves superior to animals, and that for these reasons it is possible to convey any lesson to the child through the medium of a fact-based animal story.

During the course …

An Analysis Of The Dimensions Of Congressional Voting: The Case For Foreign Aid, Donald R. Morrison May 1984

An Analysis Of The Dimensions Of Congressional Voting: The Case For Foreign Aid, Donald R. Morrison

Theses and Dissertations

The major focus of this paper concerns defining congressional issue dimensions towards the American foreign assistance programs of 1979 to 1982. The resulting dimensions serve as a foundation to identify coalitions of congressmen who support or oppose different aspects of foreign aid policies. Previous foreign aid vote studies have usually divided congressmen into pro and con camps or placed them along activist-restrained continuums. This study, however, is based on the assumption that foreign aid policy has become too complex for such divisions and that its dimensions center more around the types of aid, the purposes of aid, and the ideological …

Dedalus And Icarus: The Influence Of James Joyce On The Poetry Of Hart Crane, Ayman F. B. Hussein May 1984

Dedalus And Icarus: The Influence Of James Joyce On The Poetry Of Hart Crane, Ayman F. B. Hussein

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is a pioneer study of the influence of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Ulysses on Hart Crane's White Buildings. As such, it is both an influence study and a close reading of Crane's finest poems in a new light.

The first part of the essay (the introduction and the first three chapters) tackles the question of influence, the authors who helped shape Crane's literary make-up, and the extent and limitations of these influences as compared to the thorough-going influence Joyce exerted on Crane. In those chapters I examine the role played …

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli Jan 1984

Radicals And Immigrants: Senator William H. King's Response To Nativism, 1917-1924, Craig D. Galli

Theses and Dissertations

When Senator William Henry King took office in 1917, Utah and the nation were apprehensive about the presence of large numbers of foreign born aliens and citizens. Utah's King joined the wartime hysteria and promoted many nativistic policies directed against the foreign born population. During the post-war Red Scare he continued his crusade, concentrating on the suppression of Bolsheviks and the Industrial Workers of the World.

But when Congress passed the Immigration Act of 1924--a nativistic law designed to curtail the immigration of southern and eastern Europeans--King was the bill's only opponent from the West or South. Since anti-radicalism and …

Effects Of N-Substituents On The Polymerization Properties Of Maleimide, Dilip R. Abayasekara Jan 1984

Effects Of N-Substituents On The Polymerization Properties Of Maleimide, Dilip R. Abayasekara

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of the amide function and the carbethoxy function on the polymerization properties of maleimide are reported. The effects of these functions on homopolymerization and copolymerization (with styrene) were examined. These electron-withdrawing groups appeared to decrease the rate of homopolymerization and increase the rate of copolymerization.

N-carbamylmaleimide and N-carbethoxymaleimide were copolymerized with styrene in 1,4 -dioxane at 60.0° C at different feed ratios to high conversion. Copolymer composition, determined by elemental analysis and 1H NMR, indicated that while 1:1 copolymers were obtained with an equimolar feed ratio, the two systems were not alternating. It is of note that the …

This purpose was accomplished through a survey which emphasized the perceived degree of need and the perception of degree of impact on post-secondary vocational-technical curricula from selected technological, economic, programmatic, legislative, and sociological trends.A primary concern in the survey was to …

Endocrine Dysfunction In Primary Depressive Disorders In The Mentally Retarded And Its Behavioral Correlates., Douglas Joseph Pawlarczyk Jan 1984

Endocrine Dysfunction In Primary Depressive Disorders In The Mentally Retarded And Its Behavioral Correlates., Douglas Joseph Pawlarczyk

Theses and Dissertations

Melancholia or severe depression is a poorly explored phenomenon within mentally retarded populations. Traditional self-report measures of depression are of limited utility for most mentally retarded individuals. Data from a biological test for depression, the dexamethasone suppression test (DST), in conjunction with data from behavioral rating scales, may provide a more reliable means of delineating the nature of severe depression in mentally retarded individuals.Seven hundred and sixteen of the 810 residents of a large institution for mentally retarded individuals were rated by attendants for various characteristics of severe depression. On the basis of these ratings and the absence of other …

The Central Control Of Directional Fractionation: Lateralized Attentional Processes Indexed By Heart Rate., Anthony Stephen Papciak

Theses and Dissertations

The peripheral electrophysiological manifestation of different attentional systems was investigated by recording heart rate. Two groups were differentiated using the personality variable locus of control. Subjects were given a perceptual task, Navon figures, which had figures that differed on global and analytical features. A warning stimulus (x) cued the subjects to the beginning of each trial. Following this task subjects were trained on viewing line drawings in either a global or an analytic style. The global style required the subject to find the gist or overall theme of the picture and the analytic style required finding three objects in the …

The Effect Of Hydrocortisone On Auditory Sensitivity, Rodney J. Haug Jan 1984

The Effect Of Hydrocortisone On Auditory Sensitivity, Rodney J. Haug

Theses and Dissertations

In order to test the effect of cortisol on auditory thresholds, seventy-five volunteer right-handed college males were given either a 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg dose of hydrocortisone, or placebo, or were part of a control group in a double blind design. Right ear auditory thresholds were determined for frequencies of 500, 1,000, 4,000 and 8,000 Hz using the method of limits. The results were converted to mean threshold change scores by using threshold scores obtained for the same subject prior to treatment. Results indicated that treatment with 20 mg of cortisol reduced sensitivity at 8,000 Hz as compared …

A Biography Of Kb: A Woman And An Era. (Volumes I And Ii) (Tiffany; North Dakota)., Janice Eileen Lookhart Ginger

Theses and Dissertations

This study is the in-depth documentation of a woman English educator whose life was at once uniquely individual and representative of an era and a profession. She was never famous, but rather was one of the countless numbers of teachers who so profoundly influenced and shaped American education. The life of Kathrine Belanger Macdonald Tiffany, or KB as she was more generally known, spanned a full century, 1878-1978. She both witnessed and participated in much of this country's history, from homesteading to politics. And she was especially influenced by the nineteenth-century, Protestant-American ideals of morality, citizenship, and education. The study is divided …
