Following A Leg Of Mutton, The Pastoral In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Priscilla Homola May 1985

Following A Leg Of Mutton, The Pastoral In Rolvaag's Giants In The Earth, Priscilla Homola

Theses and Dissertations

Much critical attention has quite rightly been focused in recent years on the epic and heroic qualities of Roelvaag's Giants in the Earth. However, Giants in the Earth is not all epic--partly because Roelvaag perceives the settling of the Plains by Scandinavian immigrants with mixed feelings: on the one hand, wishing to rekindle in them a sense of their serious destiny in the New World; on the other, longing for a return to the lost values of his own Norwegian youth. Hence, far from glorifying epic struggle or extolling heroic virtues, Roelvaag rather emphasizes pastoral virtues somewhat at variance with …

Flexible Engineering Software: An Integrated Workstation Approach To Finite Element Analysis, Brant Arnold Ross Apr 1985

Flexible Engineering Software: An Integrated Workstation Approach To Finite Element Analysis, Brant Arnold Ross

Theses and Dissertations

One obstacle preventing more engineers from using finite element analysis (FEA) is the difficulty of transferring data between steps in the modeling process. A Fortran computer program, Rosetta.BYU, has been developed to open data paths between finite element preprocessors (mesh generators) and finite element analysis programs, using a custom data structure. It accepts neutral data files, Version 2.0 IGES data files, and Movie.BYU files for input/output. An application of Rosetta is described. A general workstation manager program, Davinci.BYU, is reviewed that provides a support layer between the engineer and the operating system, organizes software and data files, and facilitates on-line …

Qualitative And Quantitative Morphology Of Lateral Rectus Motoneurons Of The Principal Abducens Nucleus, Helen Russell-Mergenthal Jan 1985

Qualitative And Quantitative Morphology Of Lateral Rectus Motoneurons Of The Principal Abducens Nucleus, Helen Russell-Mergenthal

Theses and Dissertations

Nine lateral rectus motoneurons of the principal abducens nucleus, intracellularly stained with HRP, were morphometrically analyzed by light microscopy using a new method for determining motoneuron size. Particular emphasis was placed on devising a method of estimating total dendrite size from the proximal dendritic diameter alone.

The dendrites of these cells were divided into three types. One type, the microdendrites, had a consistent diameter of l micrometer, variable but short lengths, and added very little to the overall cell size. The majority of the dendrites on these cells (83) were standard in appearance but they could be separated into two …

A Quantitative Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion Processes, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Mark D. Millsop Jan 1985

A Quantitative Analysis Of Shoreline Erosion Processes, Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Mark D. Millsop

Theses and Dissertations

Shoreline erosion is a problem at Lake Sakakawea and Lake Audubon, North Dakota. Land is lost, water quality is adversely affected, and reservoir storage capacity is decreased.

Instrumentation of the eastern shores of both lakes began in 1983 to quantify bank erosion by process (e.g., wave erosion, rainsplash and runoff, and frost-thaw failure). Other data gathered included: pool level fluctuations; wind velocity, direction, and duration; precipita tion; soil moisture; frost penetration; freeze-thaw cycles; and geology (e.g., texture, clay mineralogy and structure).

The magnitude of shoreline erosion is highly variable, especially within Lake Sakakawea. For the interval of May 1983 through …

Occurrence And Survival Of Multiple Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria In Waste Treatment Systems; R Factor Transmission To A Methyl Parathion Degrading Bacterium (North Dakota)., Michael Vincent Walter

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research was twofold. First, determine (1) the existence of multiple antibiotic resistant coliforms (MAR) in the sewage system of Grand Forks, (2) relative numbers of origin, (3) seasonal variation, (4) elimination by the sewage treatment system and, (5) rates of MAR transfer to a receiver organism. The second phase was to determine if MAR could be transferred into a methyl parathion degrading Flavobacterium aquatile (F. aquatile) and test its suitability as a genetic marker, and determine if this organism could survive in primary lagoon sewage (PLS) in competition with indigenous microorganisms.Grab samples of sewage were collected …

Evaluation Of Analytical, Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Methods For The Study Of Digoxin, Santosh John Vetticaden Jan 1985

Evaluation Of Analytical, Pharmacokinetic And Pharmacodynamic Methods For The Study Of Digoxin, Santosh John Vetticaden

Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of the research was to investigate the pharmacodynamics of digoxin in dogs. Initially an assay specific for digoxin in the presence of its major metabolites, viz., digoxigenin, digoxigenin mono-digitoxoside, digoxigenin bis-digitoxoside and dihydrodigoxin was developed using HPLC-RIA. Methodology for non-invasive measurement of left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and other systolic time intervals (STI) in beagle dogs were developed. This involved surgery for exteriorization of the carotid artery in the dogs and subsequent measurements of LVET and STI after recovery. STI, heart rate (HR) and digoxin levels were monitored in normal beagle dogs administered 0.05 mg/kg or 0.025 …

Characterization Of Humoral Responsiveness Of Cattle And Guinea Pigs To Infestations With Ixodid Ticks (Acquired Resistance, Dermacentor Andersoni)., A. Christian Whelen Jan 1985

Characterization Of Humoral Responsiveness Of Cattle And Guinea Pigs To Infestations With Ixodid Ticks (Acquired Resistance, Dermacentor Andersoni)., A. Christian Whelen

Theses and Dissertations

Cattle and laboratory animals develop resistance to infestation with ixodid ticks following a sensitizing exposure. Antigenic substances introduced during feeding stimulate immune effector mechanisms that include antibody, cell-mediated immunity, complement, and other soluble mediators. Resistance is expressed by immunopathological modulation of normal tick feeding and development processes.Acquired resistance and immune responsiveness of ixodid infested Bos taurus and Bos indicus cattle has been investigated. Ixodid salivary gland antigen (SGA) specific, and cross-reactive, IgG response curves were determined by dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (Dot-ELISA). Immunoglobulin titer did not necessarily correlate directly with levels of resistance, indicating the importance of other immune defense …

Individual Differences In Prose Memory Recall And Eeg Activation As A Function Of Personality (Arousal, Laterality, Attention), Rodney Allen Swenson Jan 1985

Individual Differences In Prose Memory Recall And Eeg Activation As A Function Of Personality (Arousal, Laterality, Attention), Rodney Allen Swenson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated a theoretical model of neuroattentional self-control systems postulated by Tucker and Williamson (1984) by examining how the systems they outline present themselves behaviorally. One system, the Activation system, was described as functionally important for preparing the organism for maintaining a tonic, motoric readiness for action. It is complemented by an Arousal system, whose main function was to perceptually orient the central nervous system to novelty in the stimulus array. The former was postulated to be left-lateralized while the latter was said to be right-lateralized, in terms of hemispheric specialization. To examine this model, 40 subjects (20 …

Reactions To Personality Test Feedback As A Function Of Attribution (Weiner, Locus, Stability, Controllability)., Daniel Eric Rubanowitz Jan 1985

Reactions To Personality Test Feedback As A Function Of Attribution (Weiner, Locus, Stability, Controllability)., Daniel Eric Rubanowitz

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on Weiner's (1979) model of attribution, attribution tendencies of therapists and clients, and the Barnum effect was discussed and integrated. An experiment was conducted in which the Barnum effect was investigated as a function of attribution. Subjects took a battery of personality tests that was composed of measures which previous research has related to the Barnum effect or to attributional styles. Later, subjects received handwritten personality interpretations, purportedly based on their test results and supposedly derived by a clinical psychologist. The feedback contained "Barnum" statements which indicated that the subject had decision making difficulties. In the feedback, subjects …

Novel Antiinflammatory Compounds: Copper- And Manganese - Ethylenediamine - Diacetic Acid Complexes., Bernice February Katz

Theses and Dissertations

Copper and manganese complexes of bridged ethylene derivatives of twenty physiological amino acids were synthesized, and tested for their ability to quench superoxide and antiinflammatory activity for use as drugs for rheumatoid arthritis. The synthesis was accomplished by nucleophilic substitution of ethylene dibromide by the amino group of the amino acids. The derivatized amino acid complexes of copper that showed the greatest activity were leucine, alanine, serine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, tyrosine, arginine and glutamine. Valine, isoleucine and threonine ethylene copper complexes showed low reactivity. The glycine complex is unreactive. The manganese complexes showed reactivity at a concentration of a factor of …

Development And Preliminary Validation Of An Instrument Measuring Four Cognitive And Affective Psychological Dimensions (Hemispheric, Specialization, Brain, Laterality)., Thomas Richard O'Connell Jan 1985

Development And Preliminary Validation Of An Instrument Measuring Four Cognitive And Affective Psychological Dimensions (Hemispheric, Specialization, Brain, Laterality)., Thomas Richard O'Connell

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to construct four relatively independent subscales measuring psychological correlates of brain laterality, namely, control-spontaneity, anxiety, analytic-impressionistic cognition, and verbal-nonverbal cognition. The selected trait dimensions, and the items to tap them, were derived largely from Tucker's (1981) and Tucker and Williamson's (1984) discussions of asymmetric cognitive-attentional and affective processes and from Shapiro's (1965) clinical formulation of obsessive and hysteric personality styles.A Deductive-Inductive (Burisch, 1978, 1984) test construction strategy was used, involving both rational and statistical procedures. On the basis of rational judgment, a priori definitions of the four trait constructs were articulated and a …

Mormons, Lds Theology And The Nuclear Dilemma, Michael Henry Ballow Jan 1985

Mormons, Lds Theology And The Nuclear Dilemma, Michael Henry Ballow

Theses and Dissertations

LDS doctrine establishes three courses of action in conflict resolution: a) selective pacifism, b) action as proxy for God as prescribed under the doctrine of continuous revelation and c) absolute pacifism. Of these three, only absolute and selective pacifism are of practical use to the modern member of the LDS Church. Of the remaining two, government political decisions and technological momentum have moved current U.S. defense strategy and weaponry away from a defensive to an offense posture, thus invalidating the case of the selective pacifist and leaving only the absolutist's stand. Despite this development, however, the number of vocal pacifists …

Women Homesteaders In Utah, 1869-1934, Jill Thorley Warnick

Theses and Dissertations

Much of Utah's history is the story of the relationship of humans and the land. Human perceptions of Utah's land have changed over time and affected the way it has been used. The homestead movement was an important phase in the use of Utah's land. Through federal settlement acts many Utahns obtained title to public land. This study is an attempt to learn more about the relationship between women and the land and about the lives of women in Utah.
The study is based on Utah land records from 1869-1934. Most homesteading activity in Utah took place during this period. …

Proliferation Of Schwann Cells Induced By Axolemmal And Myelin Membranes, Michael Paul Dinneen

Theses and Dissertations

Purified Schwann cells were cultured from neonatal rat sciatic nerve using a modification of the method of Brockes (Brockes, J.P. et al, Brain Res. 165(1979) 105-118). Schwann cells and contaminating fibroblasts were unambiguously identified using fluorescent antibodies to 2'3' cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase and the thy 1.1 antigen respectively. The Schwann cells were quiescent unless challenged with mitogens, They proliferated rapidly in response to the soluable mitogen, cholera toxin, or to membrane fractions from rat CNS or PNS, prepared by the method of DeVries (DeVries, G.H., J Neurochem, 40 (1983) 1709-1717). Mitogenic activity was present in both axolemmal and myelin enriched …

Alterations In Blood-Brain Barrier Function Following Acute Hypertension: Comparison Of The Blood-To-Brain Transfer Of Horseradish Peroxidase With That Of Alpha-Aminoisobutyric Acid, Mary Draper Bennett Ellison Jan 1985

Alterations In Blood-Brain Barrier Function Following Acute Hypertension: Comparison Of The Blood-To-Brain Transfer Of Horseradish Peroxidase With That Of Alpha-Aminoisobutyric Acid, Mary Draper Bennett Ellison

Theses and Dissertations

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) selectively restricts the blood-to-brain passage of many solutes owing to unique properties of cerebrovascular endothelial cell membranes. This selective blood/brain interface participates in the maintenance of brain homeostasis by controlling nutrient, gas, and fluid exchange necessary for brain function. Normal BBB function can be altered under various pathological and experimental conditions, allowing the transfer into brain parenchyma of blood-borne solutes normally excluded. To date, experimental study of the BBB has been accomplished primarily through the use of two different methodological approaches. Some investigators have focused on the barrier's morphological correlates and its morphopathological alteration under various …

Dissection Of Microphage Activation Using T Cell Hybridoma Derived Lymphokines, William S. Futch Jr. Jan 1985

Dissection Of Microphage Activation Using T Cell Hybridoma Derived Lymphokines, William S. Futch Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Macrophage phenotype/function can be modulated by various T-cell lymphokines (LK). The alteration of macrophage phenotype is a result of LK concentration, duration of exposure, and the level of macrophage activation when obtained from in vivo sources through elicitation by either sterile irritants or immune cellular mechanisms. In order to dissect macrophage activation into discrete signals T cell hybridomas were constructed by fusing HAT sensitive BW5147 cells with nylon-wool purified, con A stimulated T cells. The resulting T cell hybrids were screened for their ability to: (a) protect macrophages from the cytopathic effect of Naegleria; (b) induce class II MHC gene …
