Optimisation Of Sampling For A New Skin Microbiome Assay Pilot Study, Anita Smith
Optimisation Of Sampling For A New Skin Microbiome Assay Pilot Study, Anita Smith
Theses
Recent interest in the diverse ecosystem of bacteria, fungi and viruses that make up the skin microbiome has led to numerous studies investigating the microbiome in healthy skin and in dermatological diseases. An imbalance of the normal skin microbial flora can cause some skin diseases, and current culture techniques are often unable to detect a microorganism to further our understanding of the clinical–microbiological correlates of disease and dysbiosis. Atopic dermatitis and rosacea are presentations that General practitioners (GPs) often manage that may have an infective or microbiological component and can be challenging to treat. Further research using culture-independent techniques is …
Reflux Micro-Aspiration: Natural History, Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation And Treatment, Oleksandr Khoma
Reflux Micro-Aspiration: Natural History, Pathophysiology, Clinical Presentation And Treatment, Oleksandr Khoma
Theses
Background
The accurate diagnosis of gastro-oesophageal reflux pulmonary micro-aspiration has only become possible recently with the introduction of a novel technique of reflux micro-aspiration scintigraphy study combined with single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) combined with x-ray tomography (CT) in a hybrid instrument (1-3). This has allowed the accurate diagnosis of pulmonary and airway contamination with refluxate. Previously only patients with large volume symptomatic reflux aspiration were diagnosed clinically (Mendelson syndrome) or by 2-dimentional barium meal or an older plantar (2 dimensional) technique of scintigraphic aspiration studies. The concept of reflux micro-aspiration has been implicated in multiple pulmonary diseases but …

Examining Preoperative Health And Lifestyle Risk Factors In Patients Awaiting Surgery During Covid-19 In Western Australia, Nadine Radin
Theses
This study investigated the prevalence of modifiable preoperative lifestyle risk factors among patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal and colorectal surgery at a metropolitan hospital in Perth, Western Australia (WA). It aimed to characterise behaviours such as smoking, alcohol and drug use, nutritional risk, physical fitness, frailty, and body mass index (BMI), and to examine whether these changed during the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 compared to 2019.
A retrospective audit of 2,340 patient medical records was conducted, with data extracted from routinely collected preadmission documentation. Regression models compared the prevalence of risk factors across matched calendar periods, adjusting …
Phytoremediation Potential Of Selected Plant Species (Ambrosia Artemisiifolia L. And Erigeron Canadensis L.) For Reducing Priority Heavy Metal And Metalloid (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Zn) Contamination In Anthropogenically Impacted Soils Of Ukraine, Volodymyr Laptiev
Theses
Soil contamination with priority heavy metals and metalloids of anthropogenic origin represents one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the present day, directly associated with risks to public health, ecosystem degradation, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those of the World Health Organization and the United Nations aimed at ensuring a healthy environment, safe ecosystems, and sustainable land management. Under conditions of long-term technogenic pressure, compounded by the additional impact of military activities on the territory of Ukraine, the search for scientifically substantiated, environmentally safe, and economically feasible approaches to reducing soil contamination has become especially …
Methods For Inter-Sensor Radiometric Harmonization Of Planetscope Superdove Constellation, Biraj Bikram Pathak
Methods For Inter-Sensor Radiometric Harmonization Of Planetscope Superdove Constellation, Biraj Bikram Pathak
Theses
The PlanetScope SuperDove constellation consists of approximately 130 CubeSats. Radiometric drift among the satellites degrades time-series workflows. We formulate inter-sensor harmonization as a supervised regression problem and train a single model across all eight spectral bands using overlapping regions from cross- sensor image pairs. Controlled experiments on same-day image pairs show that a cubic spline model with 20 uniform knots and joint Ridge regularization achieves the lowest error among the evaluated per-pixel regression approaches. The model converges to a Kullback-Leibler divergence between 0.001 and 0.003, and no alternative architecture studied achieves a statistically significant improvement. Models that fit on each …
The Impact Of Pre-Trial Attitudes And Educational Jury Instructions : Juror Decision-Making In Mens Rea Cases Involving Mental Illness, Victoria E. O'Connell
The Impact Of Pre-Trial Attitudes And Educational Jury Instructions : Juror Decision-Making In Mens Rea Cases Involving Mental Illness, Victoria E. O'Connell
Theses
Juror decision-making in cases involving mental illness is shaped by legal understanding and subjective attitudes. This study examined how juror attitudes and jury instruction type influence the application of mens rea defenses—Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI), Diminished Capacity (DC), and Guilty but Mentally Ill (GBMI)—in criminal case vignettes involving defendants with mental health presentations. Enhanced jury instructions improved understanding of mens rea concepts but did not improve the application of these concepts to verdict decisions. Biases against mens rea defenses were associated with DC verdict decisions, with more negative NGRI attitudes predicting less legally accurate but more confident …
Down The Rabbit Hole : A Journey Of Writing And Liberation, Mckenzie Sharp
Down The Rabbit Hole : A Journey Of Writing And Liberation, Mckenzie Sharp
Theses
Down the Rabbit Hole: A Journey of Writing and Liberation is a hybrid creative thesis composed of poetry, memoir, and auto-fiction that explores trauma, mental illness, abuse, and resilience through non-linear narrative and surrealist imagery. This collection examines writing as both a survival practice and reclamation of agency after prolonged silencing by drawing on feminist theory, trauma studies, and experimental literature techniques. Structured as an anthology, the thesis mirrors fractured memory and identity and the cyclical nature of healing. Organized into three chapters— “Awakening,” “Deconstruction,” and “Enlightenment”—the collection traces recognition of harm, dismantling of inherited belief systems, and the ongoing …
The Impact Of Stereotype Threat And Grit On The Experience Of Imposter Syndrome, Lindsey C. Davis
The Impact Of Stereotype Threat And Grit On The Experience Of Imposter Syndrome, Lindsey C. Davis
Theses
Imposter syndrome (IP) is a psychological phenomenon in which one has an internal experience of intellectual phoniness. Past researchers have found that overall females tend to report higher levels of IP than men, with Stereotype Threat (ST) being a cited explanation. A common denominator in much of the literature is how belongingness can activate ST in females. It has been found that individuals high in IP, especially females, tend to experience poor mental health outcomes. Past research has also established a link between IP and conscientiousness in females, a personality trait related to the facet of grit. The current study …
Application Of A Scale-Resolving Turbulence Model To Supersonic Retropropulsion Flows In Earth And Martian Atmospheres, Rebecca Thompson
Application Of A Scale-Resolving Turbulence Model To Supersonic Retropropulsion Flows In Earth And Martian Atmospheres, Rebecca Thompson
Theses
The Blended Partially-Averaged Navier-Stokes (BPANS) turbulence model was used to simulate complex turbulent compressible flows seen in supersonic retropropulsion (SRP). The model was incorporated in the OpenFOAM solver sonicFoam to investigate SRP flows in Earth and Martian atmospheres. The new sonicFoam with BPANS was first tested for subsonic flows using the shear flow benchmark case of flow around a cylinder. Results show good agreement of velocity profiles with experimental values. SonicFoam was then validated for compressible flows using an experimental SRP configuration. Pressure coefficient distribution along the forebody and aft body of the geometry show good agreement with experimental results. …
A Complex Systems Integration Analysis Approach, Tamia Neal
A Complex Systems Integration Analysis Approach, Tamia Neal
Theses
It has been said that if the building blocks of a system were designed and implemented correctly, then their subsequent integration would be straightforward. The complex systems integration analysis approach presented in this thesis provides the mechanisms to construct those blocks. A spectral clustering algorithm is used to cluster elements into modules, and the normalized integrative complexity metric is used to evaluate the portion of structural complexity that can be attributed to integrating a system from its modules. Together, the algorithm and metric identify which aggregates of system elements reduce the complexity of the integration effort. The proposed integration analysis …
Modeling And Characterization Of Pond And Fresh Ash Leaching In Citric Acid, Christina Fleming
Modeling And Characterization Of Pond And Fresh Ash Leaching In Citric Acid, Christina Fleming
Theses
Resourcing rare earth elements (REEs) from coal ash offers the opportunity to recycle industrial waste and reduce national dependence on foreign suppliers. In this research, the leaching behaviors of pond and fresh ash were studied to evaluate their suitability for REE recovery. Concentrations of REEs in leachates were measured and compared to kinetic models from literature, and the ash was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) to characterize the observed behaviors. The pond ash leachate exhibited lower REE concentrations with steady release patterns, likely due to the acid resistant, REE-bearing aluminosilicate glass phases. In contrast, the …
Observations Of Internal Boundary Layers And Near-Surface Wind Estimation During The Landfalls Of Hurricanes Ida (2021), Zeta (2020), And Laura (2020), Zebulon W. Leffler
Observations Of Internal Boundary Layers And Near-Surface Wind Estimation During The Landfalls Of Hurricanes Ida (2021), Zeta (2020), And Laura (2020), Zebulon W. Leffler
Theses
Accurately estimating near-surface winds during hurricane landfalls is crucial for enhancing situational awareness and facilitating post-storm recovery efforts. Previous studies have used coastal radar Velocity Azimuth Display (VAD) winds to estimate 10-m winds during hurricane landfalls; however, a notable weak bias was observed. This work demonstrates that the significant weak bias results from neglecting the wind structure within a shallow internal boundary layer (IBL). Results from an operational radar VAD analysis during the landfalls of Hurricanes Ida (2021) and Zeta (2020) indicate that leveraging the IBL winds is essential for accurate 10-m wind estimates during hurricane landfalls. Additionally, a theoretical …
Evaluating The Operational Performance Of Diverging Diamond Interchanges Under High Heavy Vehicle Traffic Using Synchro Traffic Simulation Software, Hannah Duke
Theses
Diverging Diamond Interchanges (DDIs) are increasingly used to improve traffic flow and safety, particularly where left-turn volumes are high. However, their operational performance under high heavy vehicle percentages has not yet been evaluated. This thesis investigates the impact of varying HV percentages and traffic volumes at a sample DDI location. Traffic simulation using Synchro software was used to model the DDI under scenarios with varying heavy vehicle percentages and varying volumes. This approach allowed evaluation of traffic growth and increasing heavy vehicle presence on DDI performance, capturing realistic operational conditions for freight-heavy corridors. Key performance measures included average control delay, …
Characterization Of Krypton Ion Sputtering Of Spacecraft Materials Using Electric Propulsion, Ethan Cummins
Characterization Of Krypton Ion Sputtering Of Spacecraft Materials Using Electric Propulsion, Ethan Cummins
Theses
In the field of electric propulsion (EP), xenon is the most commonly used gas for ionization. However, krypton has been identified as a potential substitute due to its high specific impulse and low cost compared to xenon. Therefore, there is a desire to understand the effects of using krypton. In EP, sputtering of spacecraft materials downstream of the ion engines have proven to be an issue during long duration missions. This research observes how krypton ions sputter a variety of spacecraft materials (anodized aluminum, glass, BN ceramic, and Kapton). The experiments in this study subject materials to different sputtering variables …

Spatially-Distributed Imu Array Navigation : Virtual Imu And Federated Approaches With Applications To Uncrewed Aerial Systems, Jackson Neese
Theses
This thesis investigated lever arm effects on distributed inertial measurement unit (IMU) array navigation and evaluated the performance of multiple fusion architectures with applications to uncrewed aerial systems (UAS). The Kalman Filters comprise of three filters: a naive baseline, a filter tracking lever arm as a filter state, and a filter constraining lever arm state estimates around known values. These filters feed into a virtual IMU fusing raw measurements and a federated filter combining output states. Each are evaluated with equal, static, and dynamic weighting based on lever arm and sensor noise. Experiments on indoor and outdoor UAS datasets reveal …
Real Time Temperature Measurement Of Weld Nugget During Friction Stir Welding Operation Using Ultrasonic Thermometry, Daniel Tyler Aiken
Real Time Temperature Measurement Of Weld Nugget During Friction Stir Welding Operation Using Ultrasonic Thermometry, Daniel Tyler Aiken
Theses
Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state joining process widely used for aluminum alloys in aerospace and structural applications due to its ability to produce high-quality joints without melting. The thermal history of the weld tool and surrounding material plays a critical role in governing material flow, microstructural evolution, and resulting mechanical properties. However, accurate measurement of temperature at the tool–workpiece interface remains challenging due to the transient nature of the process, geometric constraints, and ability to obtain subsurface temperature. This thesis investigates the use of ultrasonic thermometry as a non-destructive, high-temporal-resolution method for measuring time dependent, site-specific temperatures from …
Modelling Novel Planar Nozzle Geometries For A Z-Pinch Fusion Propulsion System, Stephanie Manasterski
Modelling Novel Planar Nozzle Geometries For A Z-Pinch Fusion Propulsion System, Stephanie Manasterski
Theses
Interplanetary travel using chemical or electrical propulsion faces two major obstacles: the long mission timelines and the health risks to human crews from prolonged radiation exposure. Fusion propulsion offers a potential solution through high specific impulse and moderate thrust values. Z-pinch fusion, a pulsed magneto-inertial fusion approach, is promising for propulsion as the plasma is confined through current-driven compression, eliminating the need for external confinement coils to achieve ignition conditions, and the confinement configuration is simple. A 3-dimensional model of a novel linear magnetic nozzle geometry was developed with the propellant, dissociated ammonia, oriented sideways in the nozzle, assuming prior …
Mapping Cave Vulnerability And Priority Areas For Biospeleological Conservation, C. Lael Anderson
Mapping Cave Vulnerability And Priority Areas For Biospeleological Conservation, C. Lael Anderson
Theses
Alabama contains some of the highest levels of subterranean biodiversity in North America, yet no statewide assessment of cave vulnerability has previously been conducted. A spatially explicit vulnerability assessment was developed for Alabama caves using species occurrence records, landscape characteristics, anthropogenic threat data, and groundwater vulnerability metrics. Distribution maps were generated for cave- obligate and bat species, and vulnerability was assessed using human population, land- use, groundwater quality, groundwater quantity, and modified DRASTIK models. Results identified numerous single-site endemic species, regional biodiversity hotspots, and cave systems facing elevated anthropogenic threats. Conservation priority rankings highlighted species and caves of greatest management …
Influences Of Charge Structure And Storm Microphysics On The Relationship Between Optical And Vhf Lightning Observations, Kaitlyn Wheeler
Influences Of Charge Structure And Storm Microphysics On The Relationship Between Optical And Vhf Lightning Observations, Kaitlyn Wheeler
Theses
Lightning observations provide valuable insight into convective intensity, storm structure, and microphysical processes. Much of the current understanding of lightning-convection relationships is derived from ground-based very high frequency (VHF) measurements, while space-based optical observations remain comparatively new. This study investigates how storm charge structure and microphysics influence observed optical lightning emissions using coordinated observations from the 2017 GOES-R Post Launch Test campaign. Optical measurements from the Fly’s Eye Geostationary Lightning Mapper Simulator were combined with Lightning Mapping Array observations for ordinary multicell storms exhibiting a normal charge structure on 18 April 2017 and a supercell exhibiting an anomalous charge structure …
Design And Characterization Of A Low-Power Bulk-Driven Two-Stage Ota In 65nm, 90nm, And 130nm Cmos Technologies For 0.4v-0.6v Biomedical Applications, Raihan Khan Akash
Design And Characterization Of A Low-Power Bulk-Driven Two-Stage Ota In 65nm, 90nm, And 130nm Cmos Technologies For 0.4v-0.6v Biomedical Applications, Raihan Khan Akash
Theses
Biomedical instrumentation requires low-power amplifiers to maximize battery life. Due to threshold voltage limitations, standard gate-driven operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) require higher supply voltages. To overcome this, a differential bulk-driven two-stage OTA is introduced for low-power applications. The proposed topology is implemented in 65nm, 90nm, and 130nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), with supply voltages ranging from 0.4V to 0.6V. Key metrics such as DC gain, gain-bandwidth product (GBWP), phase margin, common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR), slew rate, power, and noise are measured. The analysis confirms the robustness of the low-power solution provided by the proposed topology.
System-Level Analysis And Experimental Testing Of A Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine With Water Electrolysis Propellants, Justin M. Byers
System-Level Analysis And Experimental Testing Of A Rotating Detonation Rocket Engine With Water Electrolysis Propellants, Justin M. Byers
Theses
This work explores the potential benefits and practical feasibility of a rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) spacecraft thruster using water electrolysis for propellant generation. Such a thruster can enable the use of liquid water as an easily storable and chemically inert propellant, as well as the volume and efficiency benefits associated with detonation combustion. A thermodynamic model is first developed to demonstrate the compounding advantages of both water electrolysis propellant generation and detonation combustion when compared to conventional isobaric combustion cycles. Comparisons are also drawn to alternative water-powered propulsion methods and the advantages of chemical propulsion are observed. The representative …
Evaluating Stormwater & Carbon Benefits Of Urban Street Trees, Anthony J. Rodriguez Diaz
Evaluating Stormwater & Carbon Benefits Of Urban Street Trees, Anthony J. Rodriguez Diaz
Theses
Urban areas experience a multitude of environmental challenges, including flooding and air pollution. In response to these pressures, urban forests have emerged as an essential nature-based strategy to enhance resilience and reduce climate-related risks. The implementation and expansion of urban street trees further contribute to this effort by mitigating stormwater runoff and reducing atmospheric carbon emissions.
Fortunately, advances in environmental modeling have made it increasingly possible to quantify these ecosystem services using specialized software. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service's i-Tree suite exemplifies this progress. The software provides a comprehensive set of tools designed to quantify environmental …
Simulation-Based Assessment Of Operational Strategies For Visibility-Responsive Variable Speed Limits, Jiyeon Ban
Simulation-Based Assessment Of Operational Strategies For Visibility-Responsive Variable Speed Limits, Jiyeon Ban
Theses
Managing speed limits in adverse weather is crucial for highway safety. Variable Speed Limit systems aim to adjust speed limits according to weather conditions, yet many traffic management centers depend on manual operator judgment. Rapid visibility fluctuations, along with operators handling multiple responsibilities, can cause delays in responding to deteriorating conditions, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions. A VSL control strategy is developed using real-time Road Weather Information System data to enable more proactive and effective adjustments. Microsimulation analysis indicates that visibility-responsive VSL operations can reduce conflicts by 59% in fog. Applying VSL only to fog-affected sections yields clear safety …
Heathammer: Effects Of Thermal Stress On Dram Technology Reliability Using Rowpress And Rowhammer, Filip Roth Tronnes-Christensen
Heathammer: Effects Of Thermal Stress On Dram Technology Reliability Using Rowpress And Rowhammer, Filip Roth Tronnes-Christensen
Theses
Modern DRAM scaling has reduced cell capacitance and increased thermal sensitivity, making disturbance-based faults such as RowHammer and RowPress increasingly significant reliability and security concerns. RowHammer induces bit flips through repeated row activations, while RowPress does so by holding a wordline open for an extended duration; both exploit inherent capacitive coupling and leakage mechanisms in dense DRAM arrays. This thesis introduces HeatHammer, a thermally assisted disturbance exploit that interleaves RowPress and RowHammer operations to amplify charge leakage and trigger row-traversing bit flips. Using the FPGA-based DRAM-Bender test platform, HeatHammer is evaluated on four commercially available DDR4 modules from different manufacturers …
A Novel Rheological Technique To Measure The Yield Stress In Equibiaxial Elongation, Asher Segal
A Novel Rheological Technique To Measure The Yield Stress In Equibiaxial Elongation, Asher Segal
Theses
Yield stress measurement in non-Newtonian fluids, particularly under complex flow conditions such as equibiaxial elongation, remains a significant challenge in experimental rheology. This work presents the development of a novel method, Continuous Lubricated Squeezing Flow (CLSF), designed to quantify the normal yield stress of viscoelastic materials while minimizing boundary artifacts.
The CLSF method was implemented and validated using Carbopol 940, a model yield-stress gel, at concentrations of 1 wt% and 2 wt%. Comparative shear rheology was first performed to establish baseline yield stresses and verify sample integrity. CLSF experiments were then conducted over controlled flow rate increments and gap distances …
A Study Of Perceptions, Readiness, Benefits, And Barriers Related To Exoskeleton Adoption In New Jersey’S Warehousing Sector, Terry Asante
A Study Of Perceptions, Readiness, Benefits, And Barriers Related To Exoskeleton Adoption In New Jersey’S Warehousing Sector, Terry Asante
Theses
The warehousing industry in New Jersey remains a vital component of the region's logistics network, employing more than 200,000 workers who routinely engage in lifting, bending, overhead reaching, and other physically demanding activities. These exposures contribute to musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) rates that exceed national averages, particularly affecting the low back and shoulders. Nationally, MSDs account for an estimated $420 billion in combined direct and indirect costs each year, underscoring the need for interventions that can effectively reduce biomechanical strain. Industrial exoskeletons have emerged as a potential solution, with prior research demonstrating reductions in muscle activation, perceived exertion, and fatigue during …
Optimizing Crime Response Time Using Predictive Analytics Models, Mohammad Hassan Bin Yaqoob
Optimizing Crime Response Time Using Predictive Analytics Models, Mohammad Hassan Bin Yaqoob
Theses
Timely and efficient emergency response is essential for public safety, particularly in high- risk urban environments. However, existing dispatch systems often rely on reactive decision- making, leading to delays and inefficient resource allocation. This thesis explores how artificial intelligence (AI) and data modeling can enhance police response times through predictive analytics. A systematic review of 17 peer-reviewed studies identified key predictors such as dispatch behavior, crime history, temporal characteristics, and geographic location. Using real-world emergency response and crime data, predictive models were developed and evaluated through algorithms including XGBoost, Linear Support Vector Machine (LSVM), Generalized Linear Model (GLM), and Neural …
Scout 07, Austin Roberts
Scout 07, Austin Roberts
Theses
Throughout my tenure at RIT, I have produced multiple short films, undertaken gaming co-ops, and pursued an independent study centered on gaming assets to expand my technical and creative skills. For my thesis film, I sought to merge these experiences by concentrating on environmental storytelling—a deliberate challenge, given faculty concerns that narratives lacking strong character focus may struggle to engage audiences emotionally. With these considerations in mind, I crafted a film featuring a secondary character within a rich environment, designed to immerse viewers and provoke curiosity about the story’s temporal and spatial context.
A Fish & A Bird, Deanna Moorehead
A Fish & A Bird, Deanna Moorehead
Theses
As a curtain of trees opens and dawn breaks over the glistening waters of Lake Ontario, a fish and a bird spot each other through the surface and fall madly in love. They dance and sing together from their respective atmospheres, yet each time the bird soars past the water's edge and onto the beach, the fish cannot follow. Night after night, by the light of the moon, the fish trains herself to leap out of the water, hoping to breach high enough to join her beau above. Late one afternoon, the fish approaches the shore, where the bird stands …
