How Nurse-Led Clinics Improve Health Care Access, Rose Marie Alessandra C. Conos Aug 2021

How Nurse-Led Clinics Improve Health Care Access, Rose Marie Alessandra C. Conos

Theses

The project will seek to address how nurse-led clinics enhance access to health care services, lead to patient satisfaction, and offer inexpensive and quality health care services. To evaluate these variables, the project will research nurse-led clinics in different geographical locations, some urban areas, and some are rural areas. When one lives in an urban area, it does not necessarily mean that there are readily available resources for the individual. Rural areas are addressed because there are few hospitals, and some of the areas are not accessible to transportation. These patients may have chronic diseases, behavioral or psychiatric conditions, comorbidities, …

Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representation, And Audience Reception, Taylor Dakota Thum Aug 2021

Alzheimer's Disease, Media Representation, And Audience Reception, Taylor Dakota Thum

Theses

The purpose of this study is to see how Alzheimer's disease and dementia are misperceived in the media, how this affects audience viewpoints, and how accurate depictions that challenge those stereotypes may or may not change audience perception. Common stereotypes depicted in the media include Alzheimer’s and dementia being one disease, only individuals older than 60 years old having this disease, and it being a slow and painful progression towards the end of life. Using Stuart Hall’s audience reception theory, I will see if viewers accept, negotiate, or oppose the media that challenges those stereotypes presented to them in contrast …

Conservation Of The Ambystoma Jeffersonianum Complex, Morgan Motherwell Aug 2021

Conservation Of The Ambystoma Jeffersonianum Complex, Morgan Motherwell

Theses

The Great Lakes region is home to the diverse genus Ambystoma, including the Blue Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale) and Jefferson’s Salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum). These two species are relevant to conservation efforts because of unique hybrid populations. This hybridization creates offspring populations that are morphologically similar to the parental species. The hybrid populations are primarily all female lineages and are known as the Ambystoma jeffersonianum complex. Conservation interest in this hybrid complex stems from the fact that hybrid populations are not taxonomically recognized as separate species and therefore are not protected under the Endangered Species Act. To assess the contribution of …

Improving Sub-Bandgap Carrier Collection In Gaas Solar Cells By Optimizing Ingaas Quantum Wells Using Strain-Balancing And Distributed Bragg Reflectors, Brandon Bogner Aug 2021

Improving Sub-Bandgap Carrier Collection In Gaas Solar Cells By Optimizing Ingaas Quantum Wells Using Strain-Balancing And Distributed Bragg Reflectors, Brandon Bogner

Theses

Bulk carrier collection in GaAs solar cells is limited by the GaAs bandgap of 1.42eV, leaving low-energy photons below 1.42eV uncollected. The addition of low bandgap materials allows for the collection of these ‘unreachable’ photons in a GaAs solar cell.In_(x)Ga_(1-x)As can have bandgaps between 0.354-1.42eV based on indium composition, allowing for tunable collection at longer wavelengths. Including thin 9.2nm In_(x)Ga_(1-x)As quantum wells in the i-region of a GaAs n-i-p structure enhances photon collection past the 870nm GaAs band edge, increasing current production and potentially leading to higher efficiencies. Increased current production in GaAs solar cells is especially valuable since GaAs …

Assessment And Deployment Of Genetic Tools For North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Kelsey Lawton Aug 2021

Assessment And Deployment Of Genetic Tools For North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Kelsey Lawton

Theses

North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis) once thrived in large numbers in most wetlands of North America. However, due to human pressures such as trapping, habitat loss and pollution, these carnivorous mammals have decreased in numbers significantly in the last 100+ years, becoming extirpated in many traditionally inhabited areas. The use of genetic data from molecular techniques (PCR, DNA sequencing) can guide the identification and management of populations used for relocations to better maintain genetic diversity in both wild and captive otter populations and help inform the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) breeding programs. Management organizations are concerned with …

Evaluating Identification And Sorting Technologies For Improved Ferrous And Non-Ferrous Recycling, Leslie Brooks

Theses

Metals recycling is one of the oldest industries in the United States that now employs over 530,000 individuals. It has always played a significant role in the economy, contributing $109.78 billion to the US economy in 2018. Furthermore, recycling supplies extensive goods and services, the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) reported that every year greater than 900M Mt of scrap (~2 billion pounds) are consumed by manufactures globally, equating to 40% of the raw material demand. Additionally, as climate change becomes a greater threat, we must seek practices to lessen our carbon footprint, and recycling helps to reduce the …

Automating The Measurements Of Galaxy Redshifts And Ism Properties Using Cnn, Rohan Pattnaik Aug 2021

Automating The Measurements Of Galaxy Redshifts And Ism Properties Using Cnn, Rohan Pattnaik

Theses

Studying the effects that the local environments of galaxies have on their interstellar medium (ISM) properties is crucial for understanding galaxy evolution and large scale structure of the universe. In order to do that we need precise measurements of ISM properties like Star Formation Rate (SFR), metallicity (Z), ionization parameter (U), gas pressure, and extinction. Accurate estimation of redshift and emission line fluxes from a galaxy's spectrum is the first step in measuring these ISM properties. Current techniques for these measurements still rely on time-consuming manual efforts or error-prone cross-correlation codes that are already struggling to process the vast quantities …

Material Use And Its Sustainability In The Automotive Industry, Ayomipo Arowosola Aug 2021

Material Use And Its Sustainability In The Automotive Industry, Ayomipo Arowosola

Theses

Among sectors in the United States, the transportation sector contributes the most to greenhouse gas emissions (USEPA, 2018) at 28%. A complex mix of market dynamics, demographics, and technological changes like material type (e.g. lightweighting techniques), fuel type (e.g. biogas), vehicle mode (e.g. internal combustion) and recyclability (Lewis et al., 2019) is employed to combat theses emissions. While these changes presumably effect linear level contributions and impacts, it is important to objectively determine their effects and impacts at a systems level. This research studied the material use implication of two major technological changes – lightweighting and electrification. The study involved …

Effects Of Wetland Design And Invasive Species Removal On Carbon And Microbial Communities In Restored Wetlands, Benjamin Hamilton Aug 2021

Effects Of Wetland Design And Invasive Species Removal On Carbon And Microbial Communities In Restored Wetlands, Benjamin Hamilton

Theses

Multiple wetland ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and nutrient removal are influenced by microbial communities and dissolved organic matter (DOM). I examined DOM composition, carbon metabolism, and microbial communities in three created wetlands, which had distinct hydrology, vegetation and antecedent land-use. To study differences between wetlands, porewater and soil were collected from each wetland in spring, summer, and fall of 2018. DOM was analyzed using NMR spectroscopy and fluorescence spectrometry, soil microbial community composition was examined using 16S ribosomal sequencing, and CO2 and CH4 production rates were measured in anaerobic soil incubations. Structural DOM composition varied significantly between the …

Waveform Systematics In Parameter Inference Of Gw Signals From Compact Binary Mergers, Anjali Balasaheb Yelikar Aug 2021

Waveform Systematics In Parameter Inference Of Gw Signals From Compact Binary Mergers, Anjali Balasaheb Yelikar

Theses

The Nobel prize winning discovery of gravitational waves from a binary black hole merger GW150914 opened up a new window onto the Universe. We have now seen multiple GW detections from coalescences of different kinds of compact binary objects. Accurate inference of parameters of these compact objects is a crucial part of gravitational wave astronomy. Data analysis techniques employ Bayesian statistics comparing gravitational wave models against the detected signal. Most of these models approximate solutions of Einstein's General Relativity equations, as generating numerical relativity(NR) solutions for every point in the parameter space of probable compact binary coalescences is computationally expensive. …

Flip: An Interaction Design Project For Helping People To Break Echo Chamber, Rong Zhao Aug 2021

Flip: An Interaction Design Project For Helping People To Break Echo Chamber, Rong Zhao

Theses

Social media constantly instills you with the things you like and the things you are willing to believe in, even disinformation, creating an echo chamber in which users will never have other opinions. People are controlled by algorithms so that social media platforms ensure we only get a single side of every story. The personalization of social media minimizes people's view of the world and causes the division of society. My thesis explores the interaction methods to encourage people to be exposed to multiple perspectives about things by reading the same story from different sources. To solve the problem, I …

Communication Of Feelings, Linge Lin Aug 2021

Communication Of Feelings, Linge Lin

Theses

The making of art should not be isolated from the idea of its audiences who make the artwork complete. However, it might end up as something insincere if one tries to please their audience too much. When an artist initiates a conversation with an audience, they must not be overwhelmed by the idea of appealing to them. I used this principle throughout the process of making my thesis film, Hold Me, which depicts my experience of coming-out to my mother, and our confrontations afterward. The film traces my life trajectory from my childhood until now, and illustrates how I started …

Titanium Interconnection In Metallized Carbon Nanotube Conductors, Dylan J. Mcintyre Aug 2021

Titanium Interconnection In Metallized Carbon Nanotube Conductors, Dylan J. Mcintyre

Theses

Metallized carbon nanotube (CNT) networks aim to achieve conductivities competitive with bulk metals, while retaining the favorable temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) for CNT materials. Cu is the predominant metal for high conductivity applications due to cost and availability. However, microscopy shows that Cu poorly wets a CNT surface and requires an adhesion metal for an improved physical and electrical interface. The present dissertation utilizes thermal evaporation as a direct method to evaluate 2-D coatings of Ti as an interfacial metal for bulk Cu-CNT hybrids. Specifically, a 10 nm Ti layer maintained a continuous and uniform coating after annealing to …

Modeling Perceptual Trade-Offs For Designing Hdr Displays, Yongmin Park Aug 2021

Modeling Perceptual Trade-Offs For Designing Hdr Displays, Yongmin Park

Theses

Display technology has evolved in pursuit of perceptual pleasure by providing realism and visual impact. The endeavor of the evolution has brought HDR displays to the market. HDR displays, which have become the mainstream display technology recently, are considered not only the present but also the future of displays because of their daunting technical goals: A peak luminance of 10,000 cd/m^2 and near-monochromatic primaries. However, both positive and negative prospects in terms of perceptual aspects for future HDR displays coexist. On the positive side, it is expected that HDR displays will provide better image quality and more vivid color. On …

The Influence Of Herbivory On Macrophyte Community Structure And Nitrogen Retention In Created Wetlands, Evan Squier Aug 2021

The Influence Of Herbivory On Macrophyte Community Structure And Nitrogen Retention In Created Wetlands, Evan Squier

Theses

Wetlands are frequently created to mitigate the loss of natural wetlands due to commercial expansion. However, wetland ecosystem function is determined by complex abiotic and biotic interactions that are not well understood in natural wetlands, and even less so in created wetlands. This lack of understanding may lead to shortcomings in meeting desired restoration outcomes. Key abiotic drivers in wetlands include hydrology and nutrient availability, while herbivory provides both direct and indirect controls on plant communities and biogeochemical cycling. I hypothesized that by decreasing emergent plant biomass and shifting plant community structure to favor submerged plants, large grazers such as …

Comparative Dna Degradation Automation For Identifinders, Jennifer Pfaff Aug 2021

Comparative Dna Degradation Automation For Identifinders, Jennifer Pfaff

Theses

The degradation of DNA in forensic genetic genealogy can hinder timely results in victim or perpetrator identification. Identification of an unidentified victim, a “Doe”, involves analyzing the degraded DNA against reference genomes. Organizations like the DNA Doe Project and Identifinders currently manually compares the genomes in a spreadsheet with data input slowing down the investigative process. I propose a program to automate the data input and comparison to increase the speed at which Identifinders can continue their research into identifying victims. Comparative DNA Degradation Automation (CDDA) automates the process of creating a simulated degraded DNA profile in less than a …

Coplanar Electrowetting-Induced Droplet Ejection For 3d Digital Microfluidic Devices, Marcette Sapphira Greyson Aug 2021

Coplanar Electrowetting-Induced Droplet Ejection For 3d Digital Microfluidic Devices, Marcette Sapphira Greyson

Theses

Digital microfluidics is a promising fluid processing technology used in lab-on-achip applications to perform chemical synthesis, particle filtration, immunoassays, and other biological protocols. Traditional digital microfluidic (DMF) devices consist of a 2D grid of coated electrodes over which droplets are manipulated. Selective activation of the electrodes results in an electrowetting effect that deforms the droplets and can move them around the electrode grid. More recently, electrowetting on dielectric has also been used to eject droplets and transfer them between opposing surfaces. This has given rise to new 3D DMF devices capable of more sophisticated routing patterns that can minimize crosscontamination …

Ressentir: A Multi-Layered Visual Filter For Enhancing Cinematic Experience, Anirudh Srinivasan Aug 2021

Ressentir: A Multi-Layered Visual Filter For Enhancing Cinematic Experience, Anirudh Srinivasan

Theses

Watching any digital content without audio is going to be monotonous, as one vital component of cinema is lost entirely. Removing audio will significantly affect cinematic experience and make movie-watching extremely boring for someone who cannot hear. Audio, in a movie, is comprised of dialogs, music and background sounds. One must realize that removing audio would take away, not just sound but also emotions attached to scenes. At times there might be only background score, which does not necessarily mean that these scenes are unimportant. There are obviously instances where music alone would get across the message. This thesis explores …

Carbon Soil Amendment For Promotion Of Native Species In Created Emergent Freshwater Wetlands, Taylor E. Williams Aug 2021

Carbon Soil Amendment For Promotion Of Native Species In Created Emergent Freshwater Wetlands, Taylor E. Williams

Theses

Wetlands created or restored to replace natural wetland often fail to achieve functional equivalence and delivery of similar ecosystem services, especially with regard to plant community structure. In these young ecosystems, native emergent plants may not successfully compete with invasive species that are more rapid colonizers and capable of taking advantage of disturbed systems. This susceptibility to invasion and lack of resilience is exacerbated under conditions of high nutrient availability or extreme variations in weather as a result of climate change. Management of invasive plants in wetlands typically involves costly chemical and mechanical control measures, necessitating development of cost-effective and …

Urban Farming Design In Los Angeles: An Adaptive Reuse Project In Response To Food Crisis And Housing Crisis, Pin-Han Su Aug 2021

Urban Farming Design In Los Angeles: An Adaptive Reuse Project In Response To Food Crisis And Housing Crisis, Pin-Han Su

Theses

As the world population is constantly growing and will reach 9 billion people by 2050, the current danger to the world's food supply system creates a severe challenge. By 2050, more populations will be living in the cities and creating higher demand on food supply, but the farmable lands on our planet could be much less because of climate change and urbanization. Agricultural leaders have argued that cities will need to produce food internally to respond to demand by increasing population and to avoid harmful pollution and unaffordable food prices. Architecture, as the most influential element affecting our daily life, …

Methane Emissions From Stormwater Ponds, Brianna Pollard Aug 2021

Methane Emissions From Stormwater Ponds, Brianna Pollard

Theses

Methane (CH4) is a powerful greenhouse gas that has a global warming potential 28 times larger than carbon dioxide (CO2) on a 100-year horizon. Methane emissions from inland freshwater sources are not as well understood as those from other sources; however, current estimates suggest that they account for a significant portion of global CH4 emissions. Emissions from inland waters are difficult to measure due to their high spatiotemporal variability, leading to high levels of uncertainty and a need for more CH4 flux data from these freshwater systems. Increased runoff associated with urbanization has led to construction of man-made inland waters …

Concretization Of Depression, Jing Zhou Aug 2021

Concretization Of Depression, Jing Zhou

Theses

Depression is a common mental disorder, but many people cannot understand the pain experienced by depression patients. Even after having a certain understanding of depression, it is difficult for us as normal people to empathize with the true inner feelings of depression patients. However, some people not only fail to understand the depressed patients, but they also speak slanderously and scold these depressive patients for their overly emotional actions. For these reasons, I want to show the true feelings of depression patients or the pain experienced as a depression patient through motion graphics. Motion graphic is an effective way to …

Orthorexia Nervosa: A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of The Gaps In Current Research, Education, And Diagnostic Efforts, Olivia Drew Garror Aug 2021

Orthorexia Nervosa: A Multidisciplinary Analysis Of The Gaps In Current Research, Education, And Diagnostic Efforts, Olivia Drew Garror

Theses

Background: Orthorexia nervosa (ON), a term coined in the late 1990s by Steven Bratman, MD, is characterized by an obsessive preoccupation with practicing a “healthy diet”. There is scant reliable literature on the topic and it remains unrecognized as a diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders 5. Thus, debate surrounding its legitimacy as a diagnosis continues. However, eating disorders (EDs) in the category Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorder (OSFED), including ON, account for the highest percentage of ED diagnoses in the U.S. Although primary care physicians are often the first to encounter patients suffering from …
