Investigating Expansion And Extinction In The Planetary Nebula Ngc 7027 With Hst, Paula M. Moraga Baez
Investigating Expansion And Extinction In The Planetary Nebula Ngc 7027 With Hst, Paula M. Moraga Baez
Theses
Planetary nebulae are a late stage of the evolution of intermediate-mass (~1-8 solar mass) stars. A planetary nebula is formed after an asymptotic giant branch star's ejected mass becomes ionized by the stellar core, which is on its way to becoming a white dwarf. The shaping of planetary nebulae is slowly unveiled through studies of young and evolving nebulae such as NGC 7027. I have conducted an extensive analysis of the first-ever suite of contemporaneous panchromatic Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3) images of NGC 7027, extending from near-UV to near-IR. Extinction correction is performed successfully on several …
Integration Of A Visible-Telecom Photon Pair Source With Silicon Photonics For Quantum Communication, Vijay Soorya Shunmuga Sundaram
Integration Of A Visible-Telecom Photon Pair Source With Silicon Photonics For Quantum Communication, Vijay Soorya Shunmuga Sundaram
Theses
Reliable transfer of quantum information between nodes of quantum processors and memories is crucial for the realization of many groundbreaking technologies. These include distributed sensing, distributed computation, entanglement swapping, quantum metrology, quantum key distribution etc... which would vastly expand the potential of today’s quantum computers and form the framework for a secure quantum internet. However, most quantum nodes are accessed using visible photons which are incompatible with the telecom-band optical fiber network. In this thesis, we propose a method to bridge this spectral mismatch between the quantum nodes and the communication channel using a highly non-degenerate (810nm+1550nm) photon pair source …

Polarization Dynamics In Nonlinear Photonic Resonators, Saif A. Al Graiti
Polarization Dynamics In Nonlinear Photonic Resonators, Saif A. Al Graiti
Theses
The global market demand for higher-bandwidth communication is increasing exponentially. Although optical networks provide high transmission speed using light to transmit signals, a bottleneck-inducing conversion is often needed to perform the processing of optical signals in the electrical domain. Such processing imposes a major barrier that would limit the high transmission speed of fiber-optic communications. This bottleneck conversion may be mitigated by extending signal-processing capabilities directly into the optical domain itself. Thus, I have studied the dynamics of optical polarization in a nonlinear photonic resonator to understand a new optical physical behavior to enhance the capabilities of optical signal processing. …

Examining The Tradeoffs Of Green Infrastructure For Stormwater Management: Ecosystem Services Vs. Environmental And Human Health Impacts, Ciara M. Heister
Theses
As green stormwater infrastructure (GI) practices become more widely implemented, it is important to develop a full understanding of both the positive and negative ways that GI practices may influence environmental and human health. Additionally, as climate change leads to shifts in precipitation patterns, it is necessary to understand how the resulting changes in stormwater runoff volume, soil moisture, and vegetation species composition will impact both biogeochemical cycling and the production of ecosystem services and disservices. The overall objective of this study was to compare green stormwater infrastructure practices by weighing the tradeoffs that exist between negative impacts such as …
On Some Similarities And Differences Between Deep Neural Networks And Kernel Learning Machines, Eddie Pei
On Some Similarities And Differences Between Deep Neural Networks And Kernel Learning Machines, Eddie Pei
Theses
This thesis presents an extensive and thorough computational comparison featuring deep neural networks and kernel learning machines and successfully establishes that on both real-life datasets and artificially simulated ones, kernel learning machines tend to be just as good as deep neural networks and quite often far better predictively. It turns out from the findings of this thesis that while deep neural networks might have worked well on tasks for which millions of observations are available, kernel learning machines just happen to be predictively better on the wide variety of tasks with the kind of sample size that one should realistically …

Assessing The Degree Of Agreement Between Polarized And Unpolarized Densitometry In Offset Lithographic Applications, Devin J. Schneider
Assessing The Degree Of Agreement Between Polarized And Unpolarized Densitometry In Offset Lithographic Applications, Devin J. Schneider
Theses
Automated color measurement systems have become significant components of offset lithographic printing presses for better process control and reduced job waste. In Europe, printers have broadly adopted polarized densitometry, which is uncommon in US standard operating procedures. It is recognized that some European press manufacturers provide automated color measurement instrumentation limited to polarized density readings. Introducing polarized densitometry into an environment where unpolarized densitometry is utilized can be problematic. The increasing significance of this issue has motivated print professionals to look for a solution. The present study applies the Bland-Altman method together with other statistical analyses to determine if a …

Direct Writing Of Printed Electronics Through Molten Metal Jetting, Manoj Meda
Theses
This research proposes a novel approach to printed electronics manufacturing via molten metal droplet jetting (MMJ). Large scale experimental work is presented to establish suitable jetting parameters for fabrication of high quality conductive electronic traces. Following process optimization, resistivity values as low as 4.49 µΩ-cm for printed 4043 aluminum alloy traces have achieved. This essentially matches the electrical resistivity of the bulk alloy, and it represents a significant improvement over results obtained with printed nanoparticle ink electronics. Electrical resistivity of printed traces that undergo static and cyclical flexing is included in the analysis. The cross-sectional area of traces printed with …
Marginalizing Over The Waveform Systematics Of Compact Binary Coalescence Models Using Rift, Aasim Zahoor Jan
Marginalizing Over The Waveform Systematics Of Compact Binary Coalescence Models Using Rift, Aasim Zahoor Jan
Theses
As Einstein’s equations for binary compact object inspiral have only been approximately or intermittently solved by analytic or numerical methods, the models used to infer parameters of gravitational wave (GW) sources are subject to waveform modeling uncertainty. We illustrate these differences and then introduce a very efficient technique to marginalize over waveform uncertainties, relative to a prespecified sequence of waveform models. We also extend this technique to include dynamic weighting by calculating overlap of models with Numerical Relativity. Being based on RIFT, a very efficient parameter inference engine, our technique can directly account for any available models, including very accurate …

Measurements Of Radiation Pressure On Diffractive Films, Ying-Ju Lucy Chu
Measurements Of Radiation Pressure On Diffractive Films, Ying-Ju Lucy Chu
Theses
One of the few ways to reach distant stars is by radiation pressure, in which photon momentum is harnessed from free sunlight or extraordinarily powerful laser systems. Large but low mass light-driven sails reflect photons and transfer momentum to the sailcraft, providing large velocity from continuous acceleration. Over the past decade, demonstrative reflective light sail missions were enabled by cost-efficient small satellites and the emerging private space economy. The maneuver of these metal-coated polyimide films is mechanically cumbersome because the sail must be rapidly tilted towards and away from the sun line during navigation. Modern diffractive films such as high-efficiency …

Intelligent Lower-Layer Denial-Of-Service Attacks Against Cellular Vehicle-To-Everything, Geoff Twardokus
Intelligent Lower-Layer Denial-Of-Service Attacks Against Cellular Vehicle-To-Everything, Geoff Twardokus
Theses
Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication promises a wide range of benefits for society. Within future V2X-enabled intelligent transportation systems, vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication will allow vehicles to directly exchange messages, improving their situational awareness and allowing drivers or (semi-)autonomous vehicles to avoid collisions, particularly in non-line-of-sight scenarios. Thus, V2V has the potential to reduce annual vehicular crashes and fatalities by hundreds of thousands. Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything (C-V2X) is rapidly supplanting older V2V protocols and will play a critical role in achieving these outcomes. As extremely low latency is required to facilitate split-second collision avoidance maneuvers, ensuring the availability of C-V2X is imperative for safe …

Reproducing And Explaining Entity And Relation Embeddings For Link Prediction In Knowledge Graphs, Narayanan Asuri Krishnan
Reproducing And Explaining Entity And Relation Embeddings For Link Prediction In Knowledge Graphs, Narayanan Asuri Krishnan
Theses
Embedding knowledge graphs is a common method used to encode information from the graph at hand projected in a low dimensional space. There are two shortcomings in the field of knowledge graph embeddings for link prediction. The first shortcoming is that, as far as we know, current software libraries to compute knowledge graph embeddings differ from the original papers proposing these embeddings. Certain implementations are faithful to the original papers, while others range from minute differences to significant variations. Due to these implementation variations, it is difficult to compare the same algorithm from multiple libraries and also affects our ability …
