Data Augmentation For Automatic Speech Recognition For Low Resource Languages, Ronit Damania Oct 2021

Data Augmentation For Automatic Speech Recognition For Low Resource Languages, Ronit Damania

Theses

In this thesis, we explore several novel data augmentation methods for improving the performance of automatic speech recognition (ASR) on low-resource languages. Using a 100-hour subset of English LibriSpeech to simulate a low-resource setting, we compare the well-known SpecAugment augmentation approach to these new methods, along with several other competitive baselines. We then apply the most promising combinations of models and augmentation methods to three genuinely under-resourced languages using the 40-hour Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu datasets from the 2021 Interspeech Low Resource Automatic Speech Recognition Challenge for Indian Languages. Our data augmentation approaches, coupled with state-of-the-art acoustic model architectures and language …

Advanced Photovoltaic Devices Enabled By Lattice-Mismatched Epitaxy, Anastasiia Fedorenko Oct 2021

Advanced Photovoltaic Devices Enabled By Lattice-Mismatched Epitaxy, Anastasiia Fedorenko

Theses

Thin-film III-V semiconductor-based photovoltaic (PV) devices, whose light conversion efficiency is primarily limited by the minority carrier lifetimes, are commonly designed to minimize the formation of crystalline defects (threading dislocations or, in extreme cases, fractures) that can occur, in particular, due to a mismatch in lattice constants of the epitaxial substrate and of the active film. At the same time, heteroepitaxy using Si or metal foils instead of costly III-V substrates is a pathway to enabling low-cost thin-film III-V-based PV and associated devices, yet it requires to either use metamorphic buffers or lateral confinement either by substrate patterning or by …

The Public Poster: An Exploration Of Storytelling In Poster Design, Elizabeth Hiler Oct 2021

The Public Poster: An Exploration Of Storytelling In Poster Design, Elizabeth Hiler

Research suggests that it is incredibly difficult for a person to change their mind. Confirmation bias and echo chambers are just a few of the reasons people do not give themselves the opportunity to explore new stories, ideas, beliefs. It is now our challenge to connect with people in unconventional ways and explore storytelling in new spaces to give difficult topics more accessibility to public discourse. The Public Protest Poster can be found at the start of most movements for social and political change by creating a simplified statement with a strong graphic for instant impact. Yet, protest posters rely …

Anchor Self-Calibrating Schemes For Uwb Based Indoor Localization, Jonathan Pereira Oct 2021

Anchor Self-Calibrating Schemes For Uwb Based Indoor Localization, Jonathan Pereira

Theses

Traditional indoor localization techniques that use Received Signal Strength or Inertial Measurement Units for dead-reckoning suffer from signal attenuation and sensor drift, resulting in inaccurate position estimates. Newly available Ultra-Wideband radio modules can measure distances at a centimeter-level accuracy while mitigating the effects of multipath propagation due to their very fine time resolution. Known locations of fixed anchor nodes are required to determine the position of tag nodes within an indoor environment. For a large system consisting of several anchor nodes spanning a wide area, physically mapping out the locations of each anchor node is a tedious task and thus …

Noninvasive Electrocardiographic Imaging (Ecgi) To Guide Catheter Ablation Of Scar-Related Ventricular Tachycardia, Omar Ahmed Gharbia Sep 2021

Noninvasive Electrocardiographic Imaging (Ecgi) To Guide Catheter Ablation Of Scar-Related Ventricular Tachycardia, Omar Ahmed Gharbia

Theses

Scar-related VT is caused by local \textit{short circuits} of electrical propagation formed by slow-conducting channels of surviving tissue within a scar. Catheter ablation treats scar-related VT by destroying the critical channel of surviving tissues. Its efficacy heavily relies on how well the channels critical to the formation of VT circuits can be localized. Unfortunately, in current practice, this relies on invasive catheter mapping that falls short in several critical aspects: up to 90$\%$ of the VT circuits are too short-lived to be mapped, the mapping cannot be done non-invasively prior to the ablation procedure, and the mapping is restricted to …

Drug Releasing Hydrogels For Opioid Use Disorder, Kaytlyn M. Crowe Aug 2021

Drug Releasing Hydrogels For Opioid Use Disorder, Kaytlyn M. Crowe

Theses

Ease of access to prescription opioids and the strength of synthetic opioids have contributed to the rise in over use disorders, overdose, and death rates during the opioid epidemic. The current overdose standard of care, rescue NLX (NLX), is a competitive antagonist to the μ-opioid receptor but has a relatively short period of action compared to opioid agonists, especially synthetic agonists. Rises in the abuse of these synthetic and semi-synthetic agents in recent years have shown the weaknesses of rescue NLX, as it can leave overdose patients vulnerable to renarcotization and precipitated withdrawal. To prevent both from occurring, we developed …

The Use Of Machine Learning In Assessing Suicide Risk: A Meta-Analysis, Rachael Kang Aug 2021

The Use Of Machine Learning In Assessing Suicide Risk: A Meta-Analysis, Rachael Kang

Theses

Suicide is a devastating act in which a person takes their own life. Decades of research into suicide have identified a myriad of risk factors that have been used to create assessments of suicide risk and suicidality. However, more recent research has suggested that these identified risk factors may have no better predictive ability than chance, perhaps because suicide is actually a multi-dimensional, multi-faceted construct that has been viewed too simplistically for prediction’s sake. To try and better appreciate the complex nature of suicide while also increasing prediction accuracy, researchers have turned to machine learning. This study sought to meta-analyze …

A Cost Analysis And Policy Review Of Digestate When Deemed A Waste Product And A Fertilizer., Sarah Chandrika Cannon Aug 2021

A Cost Analysis And Policy Review Of Digestate When Deemed A Waste Product And A Fertilizer., Sarah Chandrika Cannon

Theses

Food waste is a multifaceted issue that has proposed solutions as complex as the problem itself. New York State recently announced a food waste ban, effective January of 2020, that will require large scale food waste producers to manage the waste through alternative methods as opposed to disposal in a landfill. One of those methods is through Anaerobic Digestion, a process in which organic matter chemically reacts with bacteria to produce a biofuel along with an associated byproduct, namely digestate. The biofuel in most cases is used to produce electricity to feed back to the grid acting as a net …

Examining Own-Race Bias: A Cooperation And Memory Study Using Diverse Emojis, Jillian Franks Aug 2021

Examining Own-Race Bias: A Cooperation And Memory Study Using Diverse Emojis, Jillian Franks

Theses

Other-race-effect or own-race bias is a well-documented phenomenon in memory. Findings suggest that humans are better at recognizing and remembering faces of their own race than other races. Previous research suggests that these results are due to a lack of interracial contact or exposure to other racial groups. Evidence from previous studies has demonstrated that individuals process own-race faces differently than other-race faces, paying more attention to more salient features that become better encoded. While there is empirical support for both hypotheses, it has yet to be studied if the other-race effect for memory extends to representational human faces, for …
