Establishing Parameters For Selecting Eligible Neutral Current Neutrino-Proton Elastic Scattering Events Using Minerνa Detector Samples, Amelia Genus
Theses
The neutrino has been a theorized particle since the early 1900’s but its elusive nature has made detecting, understanding, and characterizing it particularly difficult. Experiments to detect neutrinos aim to better discern how this Standard Model particle interacts with matter, its own unique properties, and its ties to the history of our universe. The MINVERvA collaboration studies scattering cross sections by using five different nuclear targets (water, carbon, iron, helium, and lead) to gain a wide array of data involving a range of interaction types. These precision measurements directly reduce the systematic uncertainties for larger neutrino experiments that search for …
Curating The Agenda: A Review Of The Tenement Museum’S Twitter, Taylor Carpenter
Curating The Agenda: A Review Of The Tenement Museum’S Twitter, Taylor Carpenter
Theses
Most museums have established strong online presences, due in part to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. To stay relevant in the social media sphere, museums must keep up with the speed at which the internet operates. One way of doing this is to follow the current trends and events that are already piquing the interest of those on the internet. However, is it the museum account that follows the current events, or are current events influenced by the museum’s presence? By examining the Tenement Museum’s Twitter account through the agenda-setting and agenda-melding theories, this paper seeks to answer the …

Machine-Learning Classifier To Detect Atrial Fibrillation Based On Facial Action Units, Chongyu Zhu
Machine-Learning Classifier To Detect Atrial Fibrillation Based On Facial Action Units, Chongyu Zhu
Theses
Facial action units (AUs) are numerical representations of indicative facial features drawn by facial landmark localization. Tiny muscular movements on the face can be reflected through facial AUs. In this project, using AUs to diagnose atrial fibrillation (AFib) in real-time is investigated for the first time, and AUs are shown to have a connection with AFib occurrence. Unlike ECG/PPG/VPG, the machine-learning-enabled AFib detector proposed in this project can realize real-time contactless monitoring of AFib continuously in home settings while maintaining the accuracy of AFib detection. ECG data and tablet image snapshots are synchronized to form the dataset that will be …

Drawing From The Past, Pengpeng Chen
Theses
Drawing From the Past is a short, 3D animated film that portrays the different thoughts about drawing between two generations and is based on my personal experience. Some art students get less encouragement from their families than other students. In Asian traditional thinking, majoring in art was not the correct career direction, which is correct in that period, because of the economy. Majoring in art means students need to pay more money than other majors. In addition, art is not necessary for some people who worry about food. In the previous period, many people worry about their lives. That means …

Virtual Cleaning Of Works Of Art Using Deep Learning Based Approaches, Morteza Maali Amiri
Theses
Virtual cleaning of art is a key process that conservators apply to see the likely appearance of the work of art they have aimed to clean, before the process of cleaning. There have been many different approaches to virtually clean artworks but having to physically clean the artwork at a few specific places of specific colors, the need to have pure black and white paint on the painting and their low accuracy are only a few of their shortcomings prompting us to propose deep learning based approaches in this research. First we report the work we have done in this …

Experimental Simulation Of Nucleating Bubble Behavior In A Microgap With Air Injected Bubbles, Jack Green
Experimental Simulation Of Nucleating Bubble Behavior In A Microgap With Air Injected Bubbles, Jack Green
Theses
The following study investigates the behavior of bubbles created by air injection under a tapered microgap. It is a continuation of previous work from the Thermal Analysis and Microfluidics Lab at RIT which showed that placing a tapered gap manifold over a heated surface in a pool boiling setup could direct the flow of vapor created by two-phase heat transfer and create a pumping effect to increase its heat transfer performance. This study isolates this phenomenon and examines exactly how bubble motion affects liquid throughput. The results of this study provide insight into the specific parameters which induce this effect …

Theses
The mammalian brain is the most capable and complex computing entity known today. For many years there has been research focused on reproducing the brain's processing capabilities. An early example of this endeavor was the perceptron which has become the core building block of neural network models in the deep learning era. Deep learning has had tremendous success in well-defined tasks like object detection, games like go and chess, and automatic speech recognition. In fact, some deep learning models can match and even outperform humans in specific situations. However, in general, they require much more training, have higher power consumption, …
Timing Jitter From Broadband Radio Observations Of Millisecond Pulsars, Jackson Hebel
Timing Jitter From Broadband Radio Observations Of Millisecond Pulsars, Jackson Hebel
Theses
Timing the arrival of pulsar light is a critical tool for scrutinizing the characteristics of the interstellar medium (ISM) and the pulsar itself. Pulsar timing is affected by factors such as the solar system's kinematics, turbulence in the ISM, and intrinsic timing noise inherent to each pulsar. The North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav) maintains a catalog of high-precision timing for millisecond pulsars. Using NANOGrav pulsars, and accounting for relative time-of-arrival (TOA) differences within observation epochs, the remaining noise in the TOA can be parsed out to just the jitter innate to the pulsar. This research utilizes wide …

Side-Channel Attacks And Countermeasures For The Mk-3 Authenticated Encryption Scheme, Peter Fabinski
Side-Channel Attacks And Countermeasures For The Mk-3 Authenticated Encryption Scheme, Peter Fabinski
Theses
In the field of cryptography, the focus is often placed on security in a mathematical or information-theoretic sense; for example, cipher security is typically evaluated by the difficulty of deducing the plaintext from the ciphertext without knowledge of the key. However, once these cryptographic schemes are implemented in electronic devices, another class of attack presents itself. Side-channel attacks take advantage of the side effects of performing a computation, such as power consumption or electromagnetic emissions, to extract information outside of normal means. In particular, these side-channels can reveal parts of the internal state of a computation. This is important because …

Effect Of Plasma Treatment On Soil Degradation Of A Biodegradable Mulch Film, Swapnil Bhattacharya
Theses
Biodegradable Mulch Films (BMFs) offer a sustainable alternative to traditional non-degradable PE mulch films. However, their slow rate of biodegradation can lead to plastics accumulation in the soil. In this study, a commercially available BMF based on polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA) is examined. Here the effects of gliding arc plasma treatment on the bulk and surface properties, as well as its soil degradation behavior, is studied. An increase in surface oxygen containing species and hydrophilicity was observed following plasma treatment. Only a small hydrophobic recovery was noted over 30 days. No changes in the bulk polymer …

Initial Data Generation And Dynamical Simulations Of Binary Neutron Star Systems, Tanmayee Gupte
Initial Data Generation And Dynamical Simulations Of Binary Neutron Star Systems, Tanmayee Gupte
Theses
The recent detection of gravitational waves (GWs) from a system of binary neutron stars (BNS) in coincidence with electromagnetic observations has launched a new era of multimessenger astrophysics. In light of the complementary knowledge to be gained through simultaneous observations, BNS mergers are one of the main targets for terrestrial GW interferometric detectors. These observations may prove critical in understanding the equation of state (EOS) of the nuclear matter inside the neutron star core, which is still poorly constrained given current observations. Understanding the neutron star (NS) EOS is critical for binary parameter estimation, and will hopefully aid in the …
The Pendulum Of Juvenile Justice Policy: Examining The Creation And Implementation Of New York State’S Raise The Age Legislation, Mary Xitco
Theses
This paper discusses changes in juvenile justice policy, focusing largely on the last 40 years. Juvenile justice policy has historically transitioned quickly from conservative punitive strategies to liberal rehabilitative and lenient strategies. We see this most recently with the tough on crime strategies of the 1990s lowering the age of responsibility to now where states have decided to start raising the age of criminal responsibility up to 18 years old. This paper looks closely at what caused this most recent shift and gives historical context as to how juvenile justice policy trends may have predicted this.

Examining Case Clearance Through A Quantitative Approach, Libnah Rodriguez
Examining Case Clearance Through A Quantitative Approach, Libnah Rodriguez
Theses
The police force bears a fundamental responsibility to bring about justice for crime victims. To best fulfill this role, police officers must hold offenders accountable, beginning with their swift apprehension. Given this expectation, police agencies, and the public alike, have used clearance rates as a direct measure of police performance. However, despite its significance to victims, communities, and society at large, the complexities inherent to case clearance are rarely understood. Indeed, their definition, theoretical importance, and current figures are seldom examined among citizens and police agencies. This working paper will attempt to address this gap in knowledge by discussing the …
Device-Free Sensing And Modeling Of Wireless Channels In Dynamic Indoor Environments, Benjamin J. Haag
Device-Free Sensing And Modeling Of Wireless Channels In Dynamic Indoor Environments, Benjamin J. Haag
Theses
Sensing human activity and/or location using wireless channel received signal strength, aka channel response, has been extensively investigated for a variety of applications. To this end, modeling of wireless channels in dynamic indoor environments typically relies on stochastic channel distributions with constant distribution parameters coupled with site-specific calibration. The Rician distribution with a constant Rician factor is a prominent example. In this paper, we propose and investigate a calibration-less stochastic channel model based on the Rician distribution with a time varying Rician factor, where the variation in time is set to reflect specific dynamic scenarios. We apply this model to …
