Topological Interactions Of Spiky Particles With A Planar Wall, Elizabeth Andrew
Topological Interactions Of Spiky Particles With A Planar Wall, Elizabeth Andrew
Theses
Synthetic spiky colloids are attractive for different technologies, but quantifying the effect of orientation on the particle-surface interactions is still lacking and hinders the use of spiky colloids in different applications. This thesis tackles one of the main challenges in colloid science and engineering to describe the electrostatic and van der Waals interaction energies of a dilute suspension of spiky anisotropic colloids with a planar wall. The model reported here quantifies the DLVO interactions of a spiky particle with a planar wall, extending the surface element integration method and including the effects of particle position and orientation. The effect of …
Applications Of Cubature Methods To Initial Orbit Determination In Cislunar Space, Kellan Meacham
Applications Of Cubature Methods To Initial Orbit Determination In Cislunar Space, Kellan Meacham
Theses
This paper aims to examine the viability of using cubature methods, instead of the computationally expensive Monte Carlo method, to model cislunar orbits. The cubature methods examined are the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) and Conjugate Unscented Transform (CUT). This study considers only specific halo and cycler orbits with no perturbations or propulsion systems. Orbits were modeled by choosing a most likely initial condition, generating sigma points, propagating those sigma points forwards in time, and calculating the average final state. It found that cubature methods can model cislunar orbits far more efficiently than the Month Carlo method, at the cost of …
Lunar In-Situ Resource Utilization For The Production Of Pylon Fission Surface Power Radiator Face Sheets, Diana Gorokhovskaya
Lunar In-Situ Resource Utilization For The Production Of Pylon Fission Surface Power Radiator Face Sheets, Diana Gorokhovskaya
Theses
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is currently considering the use of Fission Surface Power (FSP) for power generation on the Moon. Ultra-Safe Nuclear Corporation is developing a Pylon FSP system called Pylon which provides 3 MWe of continuous power. Since mass is a crucial parameter when launching payload from Earth, it is beneficial to consider In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) to produce Pylon FSP system components on the Moon. Because mass is a key performance parameter when considering launching payload from Earth, it is determined that, since Pylon radiators constitute approximately 1/3rd of total Pylon FSP system mass, the production …
Evaluation Of Atmospheric Land Exchange Inverse Model Evaporative Stress Index Utilizing Soil Climate Analysis Network Stations In Alabama, Corey Walker
Theses
The Atmospheric Land Exchange Inverse (ALEXI) model uses Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) thermal bands to derive daily evapotranspiration estimates at the continental scale. These data are used to derive a weekly Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) representing standardized anomalies of the actual to potential evapotranspiration ratio (AET/PET). ESI is functionally related to the root zone soil moisture content. As the AET/PET ratio approaches unity, the greater the available water at the root zone is for agricultural fields, whereas the opposite is true during periods of drought. However, the relationship between ALEXI ESI and root zone soil moisture may not be …
Implementing And Evaluating A Higher Resolution Weather Dataset On A Coupled Hydrological-Crop Model, Diego Andres Quintero Puentes
Implementing And Evaluating A Higher Resolution Weather Dataset On A Coupled Hydrological-Crop Model, Diego Andres Quintero Puentes
Theses
Climate change and climate variability stand as threats to agriculture, especially in low-income countries. Crop models, which simulate crop growth and development, can be used to support decision making in water and agriculture in the context of an uncertain and variable climate. RHEAS is a modeling framework that integrates a hydrologic model, a crop model, and satellite-based observations. It uses gridded input data as forcing variables for the estimation of land surface fluxes and regional crop yield. One of the input datasets is the meteorology dataset, which contains temperature and wind speed data. RHEAS includes the NCEP reanalysis dataset as …
A Scaling Relationship Between The Whim Density And The Luminosity Density Along Filament Regions Inside Of The Illustris Tng Simulation, Benjamin Byrd
Theses
This thesis presents the current progress towards deriving a scaling relation between the Luminosity density and the density of the Warm Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) located inside of filaments of the Illustris The Next Generation simulation 300-1 at redshift z=0. The filaments are located using the DisPerSE algorithm. This paper also presents a memory-efficient manner of performing nearest neighbor searches for large data sets for small dimensionality via the K Dimensional Tree, which enabled the limitation of the WHIM exterior to halos of the full simulation. The limited WHIM was binned into 6003 cells with a side length of .505 …
Evaluating The Trade-Offs Of Using Additive Manufacturing For Liquid Rocket Engines, Joshua Buettner
Evaluating The Trade-Offs Of Using Additive Manufacturing For Liquid Rocket Engines, Joshua Buettner
Theses
Liquid rocket engines (LRE) are among the most expensive components of any launch vehicle. While additive manufacturing (AM) shows promise in alleviating some of the costs of LREs, the use of AM could introduce new failure modes which would increase time spent in Test-Fail-Fix. This thesis demonstrates a methodology for understanding the trade-offs of using additive manufacturing for LREs to inform decision making. A decision matrix was used to choose the ideal AM process, and a quantitative model was applied to capture one of the trade-offs of using AM, that being increased surface roughness on LRE performance. A candidate component …
The Art Of Framing Lies : Analyzing Detective Fiction, Sarah Cauthen
The Art Of Framing Lies : Analyzing Detective Fiction, Sarah Cauthen
Theses
In this thesis, I trace the historical timeline of detective fiction and how it has progressed since its introduction. I show how certain authors, such as Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler, have shaped the way mysteries are represented to readers, as well as what each writer has left behind through their works’ legacies. I argue that the plot’s framework in detective stories is molded based on “the art of framing lies,” a phrase introduced by Dorothy L. Sayers. In doing this, the mystery author doesn’t directly lie to the reader, but deceives …
Trust In Automation And The Consequences Of Reliance On Monitoring Checks, Jenna E. Cotter
Trust In Automation And The Consequences Of Reliance On Monitoring Checks, Jenna E. Cotter
Theses
As automation becomes increasingly prevalent across society, it is crucial to further understand the benefits or consequences of the solutions implemented in automated systems that support user interaction and the overall system design. While previous literature has provided valuable knowledge to the understanding of automation and trust, there is still uncertainty about how individuals perform and respond to automated systems that provide monitoring checks to maintain users’ attention. To address this gap, this study assessed the effects of varied reliability and monitoring checks on individuals interacting with an automated system. This study is among the first to examine the consequences …
Seasonal Vulnerability Of Snakes To Road Traffic At Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Jackson S. Schoettle
Seasonal Vulnerability Of Snakes To Road Traffic At Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge, Jackson S. Schoettle
Theses
Snakes are important predators and prey in North American food webs that exhibit seasonal activity patterns in temperate regions. During periods of heightened activity, they will often utilize roads both for traveling from one habitat patch to another and/or for thermoregulation. In this thesis, I explore how human recreational activities impact the diversity and distribution of snake communities by examining the relationships between seasonality of human recreational activities and gravel road closures for waterfowl management on snake road mortality and activity at Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge in northern Alabama, USA. Many studies have investigated how snakes interact with paved roads, …
Reliability Of Physical Unclonable Function Derived From The Power-Up State Of Static Random-Access Memory In Extreme Environments, Horace J.L Wilson
Reliability Of Physical Unclonable Function Derived From The Power-Up State Of Static Random-Access Memory In Extreme Environments, Horace J.L Wilson
Theses
Static random-access memory (SRAM) is a high-speed, volatile memory that is ubiquitous in a wide range of computing platforms. Because of intrinsic process variations, an SRAM array’s power-up state presents a random yet distinctive, device-specific signature known as a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF). However, as SRAM dimensions continue to shrink, concerns arise about the PUF's resilience in extreme environments like outer space. Space has environmental conditions with high radiation levels and very low temperatures, so SRAM's reliability must be studied in these conditions. This research finds that ionizing radiation effects can dramatically impact the reliability of SRAM PUF. A technology …
Analysis Of Interconnected Subreddits On The Reddit Social Network, Lance Lindner
Analysis Of Interconnected Subreddits On The Reddit Social Network, Lance Lindner
Theses
This thesis analyzes the Reddit social network to identify two aspects of interactions on that platform: (1) implicit leader-follower relationships, which are obtained by mining patterns of user interactions on the network and (2) highly “interconnected” subreddits which are obtained by scoring each subreddit using a “interconnectedness” value derived from the interaction patterns of users across subreddits. The data were obtained from Reddit in 2022 using a custom-built scrapper. This work analyzed 125,000 subreddits. The results show that the most highly connected subreddits on the Reddit network are ones that discuss content considered to be “not suitable for work” (NSFW). …

Empirical-Based Hydrometeor Identification Algorithm Using Gmi Brightness Temperatures And Wsr-88d Derived Hydrometeor Classification, Michael B. Solomon
Theses
This research uses passive microwave brightness temperatures (TB) from the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI), and hydrometeor identification (HID) data from the GPM Ground Validation Network (GVN). An empirical relationship is developed between the observed TB and hydrometeors within the profile, using four years of co-located TB and GVN HIDs for training and testing purposes. The empirical relationship is used to create an HID algorithm, which predicts the probabilities of hydrometeor classifications, given a combination of TB values, with an average accuracy within 6.6 percent of observations, using mean absolute error. The HID algorithm is applied to …
The Impact Of Weighted Football Training On The Skill Acquisition Processes Of Place-Kicking In Sport, Sam Jermyn
The Impact Of Weighted Football Training On The Skill Acquisition Processes Of Place-Kicking In Sport, Sam Jermyn
Theses
Weighted implement training (WIT) involves performance of sport-specific motor skills with heavier-than-normal sporting implements. Typically, full range of motion (ROM) and similar kinematic characteristics of the respective motor skill are maintained concurrent to minimal changes in the force-velocity movement profile. While the majority of WIT research has been conducted in baseball, track and field, and cricket, there is a paucity of research conducted in the football codes, particularly Gaelic football. Existing observations of increased standard implement velocity and distance following the use of weighted implements infers potential benefits for Gaelic football performance, such as increasing kick-out ball velocity (BV) and …

Exploring The Metabolic Capabilities And Biotransformation Potential Of Environmental Lactococcus Strains, Desirée Román Naranjo
Theses
The aim of this thesis is to characterize environmental Lactococcus strains to identify different and diverse metabolic capabilities that could be applied to microbial biotransformation, defined as the conversion of a cheap/waste substrate into a value-added product. Due to the increased amounts of food processing waste generated worldwide and the impact of climate change, new sustainable approaches are necessary to contribute to waste valorization and the circular bioeconomy. We ask to what extent and in what ways environment isolated Lactococcus strains could contribute to food biotransformation by metabolizing a different range of substrates. We do so to further understand and …
Nutrient Intakes, Compliance With Recommendations And Key Sources In Women Of Child-Bearing Age (18-50 Y) In Ireland, Abigail O' Mahony
Nutrient Intakes, Compliance With Recommendations And Key Sources In Women Of Child-Bearing Age (18-50 Y) In Ireland, Abigail O' Mahony
Theses
Women’s pre-conceptional health (including nutritional status) is important for both the health of the individual themselves and also for the lifelong health of any occurring offspring. However, it has been estimated that up to 50% of pregnancies are unplanned, thus optimal nutritional status is important for all women of child-bearing age (WCBA) not just those with pregnancy intentions. Despite the accumulation of evidence of the importance of nutritional status at this life-stage, nutrient recommendations for WCBA for the most part don’t differ from recommendations for other population groups. The notable exception to this is that all WCBA are recommended to …
Genetic Selection For Improved Production Efficiency In The Mature Dairy Herd, Maeve Williams
Genetic Selection For Improved Production Efficiency In The Mature Dairy Herd, Maeve Williams
Theses
Improving dairy cow production efficiency is highly desirable because of its well-documented impact on profitability and sustainability. Long-term gains in dairy cow production efficiency have already been delivered through genetic selection. Nonetheless, achieving further improvements in production efficiency could cement the economic and environmental efficiency of the dairy industry, globally. To date, several components contributing to production efficiency have been overlooked, with many studies focusing on dairy cow production efficiency over short periods rather than lifetime efficiency. Therefore, the objectives of this thesis were to quantify the genetic variance components of complementary dairy cow efficiency metrics; including dry matter intake, …

Student Perception On Acceptability And Usefulness Of Sit-Stand Desks In College Classrooms, Abiola Kuilan
Theses
Sedentariness has been proved to be a major cause of various health concerns. Given that a full-time college student in the US spends more than 15 hours per week sitting in a college classroom, it may be an ideal setting for implementation of Sit-Stand Desk (SSD) to reduce college students’ sedentary time. Graduate and undergraduate students (N = 178) of NJIT were randomly recruited to complete a need based online assessment survey. Participants' mean (SD) age was 22.4(4.7) years old, 63% identified as male, 33% identified as female while 4% were of the other gender class. Among the participants, 44.3% …
Assessing The Health Effects Of Climate Change, Social Vulnerability, And Environmental Justice In Camden County, New Jersey, Daniil Ivanov
Assessing The Health Effects Of Climate Change, Social Vulnerability, And Environmental Justice In Camden County, New Jersey, Daniil Ivanov
Theses
Climate change negatively impacts health, while socially vulnerable and overburdened communities disproportionately experience climate change and negative health determinants. Camden County is used as a case study for analyzing environment, socioeconomics, and health. Environmental variables—PM2.5 and land cover of impervious surfaces, floodplains, and forests—were compared to the CDC Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) at the census tract level, finding significant correlations between land cover, air quality, and the SVI. The overburdened communities defined by the NJ Environmental Justice Law experienced a significantly higher incidence of emergency department visitation for respiratory, circulatory, and mental illnesses than non-overburdened communities. Health outcomes were compared …

Modeling Of Quad-Station Module Cluster Tools Using Petri Nets, Aung Nay
Theses
The semiconductor industry is highly competitive, and with the recent chip shortage, the throughput of wafers has become more important than ever. One of the tools that the industry has deployed is to use of quad-station modules instead of the traditional single-station modules that allow for higher throughput and better wafer consistency by processing multiple wafers at the same time and distributing work. The industry trend is to use multiple transfer chamber robots to stack the quad-station modules in a series, particularly for etch products. In this work, the quad-station cluster tool wafer movement is modeled by using Petri net …
A Neural Analysis-Synthesis Approach To Learning Procedural Audio Models, Danzel Serrano
A Neural Analysis-Synthesis Approach To Learning Procedural Audio Models, Danzel Serrano
Theses
The effective sound design of environmental sounds is crucial to demonstrating an immersive experience. Classical Procedural Audio (PA) models have been developed to give the sound designer a fast way to synthesize a specific class of environmental sounds in a physically accurate and computationally efficient manner. These models are controllable due to the choice of parameters from analyzing a class of sound. However, the resulting synthesis lacks the fidelity for the preferred immersive experience; thus, the sound designer would rather search through an extensive database for real recordings of a target sound class. This thesis proposes the Procedural audio Variational …
