The effect of the relief image in a coherent optical system was minimized by matching the average refractive index of the emulsion ne with that of a liquid of a known refractive index nl. A match of ne and nl was determined by minimizing the intensity of the first side order of the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of a sine-wave image. A match of ne and nl can be made exactly only when the surface gelatin associated with the silver and the differential tanning effects of development are not present. An investigation is developed for determining whether certain factors, which are characteristics of a photographic edge, are of significance in the derivation of the modulation transfer function of a system from the edge. Factors investigated were edge spread, density range (contrast), and background density. The experiment was limited as to levels used but it was determined that the edge spread significant and a minimum allowable edge spread was calculated.

An attempt was made to carburize steel using cracked methane, industrial terminology for methane burned in air over a catalyst to give carbon monoxide and hydrogen, as the carburizing agent. Initial tests in a laboratory scale furnace using steel in chip form showed that, the feasibility of this method was excellent. These tests also indicated that a good method of control of the carburizing would be by a system that could measure the dew point of the gases introduced into the furnace. The next step was to apply the method of carburizing to small production size lots of bearing components. …

A procedure was developed to convert shear stress at various melt temperatures into a computed shear stress at a constant temperature in an isothermal system.
The isothermal shear stress was first analyzed at an equilibrium condition before time induced stress reduction for

Determinations of the current tolerences of sodium thiosulfate and ammonium thiosulfate fixers are made and compared. The rate of fixation of ammonium thiosulfate fixer before and after electrolysis is studied. The current efficiency of low current density electrolysis in ammonium thiosulfate is found. Causes and forms of sulfiding are discussed and related to the work of the experimenter.

Fluorescent dyes tend to fatigue when exposed to short wavelength radiation. Since all work is not done at one pH level, it is necessary to know how a change in pH will effect the fluorescing characteristics of a dye. Of particular interest is the effect on fatigue as a function of time. The shift in spectral absorption with varying pH was established for fluorescein dye. Its increase in fluorescing intensity with increasing negative ion concentration was then measured. With increasing exposure time the pH's of 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 gave indications of fatiguing while the pH's of 2.0 and 4.0 …

An experiment is described whose objective was to determine a set of alphanumeric characters of equal recognizability. Constraints were that the characters be similar in aspect ratio to the conventional tri-bar target, i.e., 5:1, and that they and the surround have a low density difference. Such a set is described, together with the experimental technique and data analysis used by the present authors to evaluate the set. At an alpha risk of 0.10 the set of characters E S 2 3 8 9 was found to have equal recognizability under two varied viewing conditions.

The purpose of this experiment was to: 1. Determine how closely five different types of terrain, such as sand, cultivated soil, grass, loose rocks, and bushes resembled Lambertian surfaces. 2. Determine how closely the radiometric functions for three wave length bands compared for each type of terrain. 3. A uniform secondary exposure of low intensity is made to a normal or underexposed primary latent image for approximately 5-15 minutes, to increase the effective speed index. This is first studied from a white light approach similar to that used in single emulsion negative materials.
In addition, the ability to manipulate and align individual layers by selective filtering was also studied. Red, green and blue filters, matched closely to the spectral sensitivity of each layer, were used separately and conjunctively towards achievement of the desired levels of effective speed, contrast, color balance and maximum density.

The Mach Phenomenon*(as perceived on photographic film) is herein investigated as a function of edge acutance, contrast and illumination level for the purpose of determining its probable effect in the area of visual image evaluation. The results indicate that dark Mach band widths increase as acutance decreases and dark band width is independent of contrast and illumination level while light band widths remain constant, over the ranges investigated. Using these findings as a basis, a dark band width predictor equation was found, taking the form; dark band width (in microns) =K/acutance, when average edge gradient is the measure of acutance. …

Since 1888, a series of mutually perpendicular lines have been used as a test object for evaluation of optics, systems, products, etc. The availability of such test objects has traditionally been in the frequency range of about one cycle per millimeter to a couple hundred cycles per millimeter. These have been available from a few manufacturers, none of which offers the extended range of .25 cycles per millimeter to greater than one thousand cycles per millimeter proposed in this project. It is proposed to test and statistically evaluate the performance of an on-easel color analyzer built by the authors. It is discovered during the testing program that the device is nonfunctional, and the testing program is re-directed toward finding the causes of the instrument mal-function. It is concluded that the particular characteristics of the cadmium sulfide cell employed, and the electronics of the device, introduce non-linearities which make readings non-repeatable. It is nevertheless felt that the concepts involved in the device, and in the testing program as originally envisioned, are sound, and that further development of the device would produce …

The acid catalyzed hydrolysis of butyl lactate with water, using lactic acid to achieve a homogeneous solution, was studied.
Experiments at various temperatures were run under catalyzed and uncatalyzed conditions. The course of the hydrolysis was followed by titrating the acidity of the reaction mass at certain time intervals. From the results of these titrations and from the experimental determinations of the equilibrium constant, the reaction velocity constants for the hydrolysis of butyl lactate were calculated. The velocity constants were found to range from .8 x 10-5 to 25 x 10-5 liters/ (g-mole)(min), depending upon the reaction temperature …
