Lanthanide Shift Reagents Involving Crown Ethers, David J. Long
Lanthanide Shift Reagents Involving Crown Ethers, David J. Long
Theses
Complexes between lanthanide nitrates and the cyclic polyethers 18-crown-6 and dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 have been synthesized; the reactions occur rapidly and in high yield. The crown ether-salt complexes have been characterized by melting point, infrared and ultraviolet spectrophotometry, conduct anee ana 1 ysis, and nuc1ear magnetic resona nee spectrometry. NMR sp ctra of uncomplexed and complexed crown ethers were identical; I tt'le uncomplexed salts were more soluble in NMR solvents than were the complexes. In most cases the crown ether-salt complexes are usable shift reagents and induce greater shifts than do the uncomplexed lanthanide salts in both proton and carbon magnetic resonance …

Laser Imaging With A Holographically Produced Lens, Eric Schwartz
Laser Imaging With A Holographically Produced Lens, Eric Schwartz
Theses
A process is outlined by which a hologram has been produced for use as an imaging device in a laser machining apparatus. Such a hologram has been termed a hololens. The hololens was initially produced by recording the interference between a coherent plane reference wave and an object wave which was produced by passing a plane wave through a transparency. The recording film was positioned at Brewster's angle and the laser light was polarized normal to the surface of the glass plate substrate in order to reduce optical noise caused by interference between the recording beams and their reflections. This …

A Study Of The Feasibility Of Academic Credit For Volunteer Work In The Public Schools In Alexandria, Virginia, Roberta Mundt Stewart
A Study Of The Feasibility Of Academic Credit For Volunteer Work In The Public Schools In Alexandria, Virginia, Roberta Mundt Stewart
Theses
This study by Roberta Mundt Stewart examines the feasibility of awarding academic credit for volunteer work in the public secondary schools of Alexandria, Virginia. Originating from Stewart's coordination of youth volunteer programs through the American Red Cross since 1971, the research explores whether integrating volunteer service into the academic curriculum could benefit both students and schools. Although one parochial school in Alexandria offered such credit, public schools had not adopted similar programs. The study addresses broader questions about how volunteerism fits within educational objectives, especially regarding experiential learning and adolescent development.
Through an extensive review of literature and program models …

The Separation Of Proteins Via Parametric Pumping And Ion Exchange, Paul Albert Falcon
The Separation Of Proteins Via Parametric Pumping And Ion Exchange, Paul Albert Falcon
Theses
A pH parametric pump, coupled with ion exchange, was used in an experimental investigation to separate a protein-water binary mixture. The model system consisted of a hemoglobin-water binary mixture. A pH gradient throughout the parametric pumping column was sustained with the use of hollow fiber devices incorporating phosphate buffer circulation.
Data is presented for both batch and semi-continuous recuperative mode pH parametric pumping. Continuous pH parametric pumping for protein isolation has also been envisioned.
No attempt has been made to optimize this newly devel-oped process; however, certain parameters are suspected of controlling separation, including buffer concentration, half cycle time, packed …
The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas
The Settling Of Particles In A Square Contained Medium, Richard S. Matyas
Theses
Stokes' Law, has been standardly utilized to calculate the terminal velocity of falling particles. However, the limitation of Stokes' Law is that it does not take into account the container walls and their resulting drag forces. Extensive work with additional drag due to cylindrical container walls has been examined by many investigators. The classical and earliest is the well know Ladenburg Correction which cannot be utilized with non-cylindrical containers. This experimental thesis examines the analog of the Ladenburg relationship for a square container. This experimental thesis was undertaken to experimentally determine the value of the constant K1 for a …

Thermalhardening Offset Lithographic Printing Plate, Eric Leonard
Thermalhardening Offset Lithographic Printing Plate, Eric Leonard
Theses
Offset lithographic printing plates, until several years ago, used incoherent light sources for image creation in light sensitive coatings. These light sources are primarily in the ultraviolet light region. Image creation, using an incoherent light source, requires either a film negative or positive and long exposure times. Exposure time is dependent on the sensitivity of the light sensitive coating and the light intensity. In recent years both equipment and plate suppliers have been working to develop offset lithographic printing plates which use coherent laser light for image creation. To date all recorded developments have worked on light hardening image creation …
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Gloss And Smoothness On Legibility, Donald Perlman
An Investigation Into The Effects Of Gloss And Smoothness On Legibility, Donald Perlman
Theses
This study on legibility takes a different approach than the studies that precede it. Standardized test targets (ISO Characters) were used as the measurement device instead of the various means used previously. This was done to keep the test more objective. Twelve papers of different gloss and smoothness values were tested with two groups--college students and senior citizens. These experiments were done under controlled conditions with the only variable being the paper. The average results from the legibility readings were correlated against the physical properties of the paper samples. The results of this study showed a 2 and 4% correlation …

Direct Measurement Of The Optical Modulation Transfer Function Of Non-Developed Emulsions, Glen Elie
Direct Measurement Of The Optical Modulation Transfer Function Of Non-Developed Emulsions, Glen Elie
Theses
A new procedure for measuring the MTF of non-developed emulsions is discussed, which uses a coherent energy source and interference system to produce sinusoidal fringes on a film sample. The transmitted light is projected onto the scanning slit of a photomultiplier, and its variations registered on a chart recorder. Measurements are taken directly from the traces of the irradiance distribution to calculate the optical part of the MTF of the sample. This system does not require development of the film, and is therefore free of the non-linearities inherent in traditional test methods. Results are obtained for Kodak Panatomic-X, Kodak High …

Infrared In-Process Densitometer, Miroslav Piskacek
Theses
The development chamber for an infrared, in-process densitometer, which will monitor and display a characteristic curve of a standard sensitometric strip during development, was designed. The monitoring radiation is to be emitted by a sequentially pulsed array of IR diodes (RCA SG1009A) and detected by an array of solid state detectors (UDT-450 Photodiode/Amplifier combination). The output of the detectors, corresponding to IR transmission, is to be scanned, electronically converted into density, and displayed. Electronic scanning assures that processes with subminute total development time can be monitored. Optical losses of the system were estimated, and a model of the optical system …

Growth Patterns Of Bacteria In Pressurized Sewage, Dennis Mazzei
Theses
Primary sewage was pressurized at 100 psi for one hour. The effects of this pressure on the growth patterns of general and nitrifying bacteria were examined daily for eighteen consecutive days using Standard Plate Counts and Most Probable Number (MPN) estimates. In conjunction with these tests, the degree of biodegradability was also determined by measuring both daily biochemical oxygen demands (BOD's) and dissolved oxygen levels.
Graphical analysis of experimental data compare the BOD's exterted [sic] by microorganisms to their respective numbers of colonies as determined by plate counts of both pressurized and non-pressurized sanitary sewage diluted to 3. 00%. The …

Thermal Decomposition Products Of Kynol And Nomex With Reference To Structure And Toxicity, Shaker H. El-Sherbini
Thermal Decomposition Products Of Kynol And Nomex With Reference To Structure And Toxicity, Shaker H. El-Sherbini
Theses
The purpose of this investigation was to study the combustion products of KYNOL and NOMEX as a fire retardant fibers. From the quantitative analysis data of the combustion products, the polymer structure is discussed and the property of thermal stability is explained.
From the analysis of the combustion products, the toxicity indices for the two fibers are determined. It is found to be 0.1 for KYNOL and 0.71 for NOMEX. This can be interpreted to mean that, if one gram of MIDI, is decomposed and the combustion products were diffused in one cubic meter of air, the probability of dying …
The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien
The Anisotropic And Isotropic Strength Behavior Of An Illitic Clay, Miles M. O'Brien
Theses
The cause and the nature of anisotropy in a cohesive soil was investigated by direct shear and triaxial compression tests. Laboratory techniques and procedures used to prepare isotropic clay samples are given where consolidation was accomplished under hydrostatic pressure. Direct shear tests were performed on these specimens trimmed at different inclinations to the physical horizontal from the block samples. The ratio of undrained shear strengths in any direction to shear strength in the vertical direction was found to be equal to one, proving isotropy existed. Similar tests were performed on specimens trimmed from the same clay consolidated one-dimensionally. Results from …

Theses
A computer model for the Dynamics of the Glucose-Insulin-Glucagon System has been developed for a 17.5 kg canine using the Continuous Systems Modeling Program (CSMP) for the 360 Computer System. The major body components controlling the glucose dynamics (liver, pancreas, body muscle, blood flow, and body fluid compartments) have been modeled in terms of either their production, absorption, or transport of glucose, and the concentration levels of both the hormones and substrates perfusing the body component. A set of mneumonics has also been developed to label the hundreds of constant and variable terms required to describe a complex system of …
Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium At Low Pressures : Correlation Of Binary And Prediction Of Multicomponent Data, Norman I. Silverman
Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium At Low Pressures : Correlation Of Binary And Prediction Of Multicomponent Data, Norman I. Silverman
Theses
The Wilson equation is chosen as typical of the new correlations for activity coefficients gaining wide distribution for use in the correlation and prediction of vapor-liquid equilibria today. Vapor liquid equilibrium data for 247 binary systems have been regressed against each of ten (10) objective functions and values of the Wilson energy parameters obtained. For the typical binary system, a wide variation of the Wilson energy parameters are observed when different objective functions are used with the given set of binary data. These are each examined with respect to their capability to correlate multicomponent vapor-liquid equilibrium data for seventy-three (73) …
An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky
An Experimental Study Of Separation Of Binary And Ternary Gas Mixtures By Parametric Pumping, Stephen E. Belsky
Theses
An experimental study of gas parametric pumping is presented which examines the purification of helium using silica gel to remove the impurity carbon dioxide. Low gas flow rates are used to allow adequate time for equilibrium to be approached, assuming intraparticle diffusion is the controlling mass transfer step. By varying the cycle time, at long cycle times, the effect of penetration length (a function of dynamic capacity) is indicated. Also, at low cycle time, the effects during pressure changes become more significant.
Using low flow rate improves separation effectiveness if evaluated at equal dynamic capacity. When using low flow rate …
