The Determination Of The Operating Characteristics Of A Newspaper Camera Department By Using Queueing Analysis, Owen Smith
Theses
The methods of operation of many newspaper camera departments have been established over a long period by many different supervisors and department heads. The system may have been good once but went bad because the nature of the department's operations changed without corresponding changes in the system. The production manager must be able to detect when a system needs modifying. Presently, there are few tools available to the manager for evaluating the effectiveness of the department. The goal of this study was to demonstrate how a very simple analytical technique could be applied to a camera department's operations and, thereby, …
A General Purpose Sensitometer For Routine Sensitometric Testing, John Lumia
A General Purpose Sensitometer For Routine Sensitometric Testing, John Lumia
Theses
A Kodak Model 101 sensitometer has been improved from the original design and also been made more versatile so as to be able to expose a greater variety of general-purpose films. Improving the machine has been accomplished by modifying the shutter to produce an exposure time of 1/20 second instead of 1/5 second, thus eliminating reciprocity law failure from calculations, and also complying with the American National Standards Institute specification for exposing continuous -tone films. The previous tungsten lamp has been replaced with a tungsten-halogen lamp. Versatility has been added to the machine by introducing a xenon-flash lamp in the …

A Study Of The Effect Of Fabric Structure And Mesh Count Variation In Indirect Stencil Preparation In A School Graphic Arts Laboratory, James Tenorio
Theses
In order to choose the best working fabric for screen printing in a school graphic arts laboratory, a representative group of eight polyester fabric samples were tested. The fabrics covered a range of mesh counts from coarse to medium and included fabrics of both multifilament and mono filament types for each mesh count. Both types were of medium grade or quality, "XX" for the multifilament and "T" for the monofilament. A specially designed resolution test object was printed by college level students in an introductory graphic arts class using indirect stencils with the sample fabrics. The stencil and five of …
A Survey Of Book Printing In The Lagos Area With Recommendations For Meeting The Need Of Universal Primary Education In Nigeria, Agbo Ella
Theses
With the sudden introduction of Universal Primary Education in Nigeria, the demand for books went up by 60%. This demand will be made acute in the 1979/80 academic year when U.P.E. is made compulsory for all school age children. A faster, quicker method of composition, camera work, stripping and platemaking, press work, bindery operation, and a good production control will increase the printers' output to meet the increased demand. The methodology of this study was based on information gathering through personal interviews. The production personnel in the book printing companies in Nigeria were asked and responded to the questions that …

Determination Of Unknown Photographic Processing Solutions Through Buffer Curve Analysis, Richard Winslow
Determination Of Unknown Photographic Processing Solutions Through Buffer Curve Analysis, Richard Winslow
Theses
The determination of photographic processing solutions through buffer curve analysis was investigated to determine its advantages, limitations, and general usefulness. A microprocessor controlled titration system was set up to perform up to 16 unassisted titrations and record the data on a floppy disk system at a speed five times faster than the speed of manual titrations. The ingredients are not detectable by this analysis if their concentrations are much less than 1/10th the normality of the ingredient with the largest concentration that is detectable by this analysis. There is linearity between the concentration of a single ingredient solution and the …

Production And Evaluation Of A Holographic Lens, H. Scott Gregory
Production And Evaluation Of A Holographic Lens, H. Scott Gregory
Theses
This thesis is concerned with the production of high diffraction efficiency holographic lenses for laser machining. A holographic lens is a high efficiency, low absorption phase hologram which, in this application, is used to diffract an expanded, highpower laser beam into a desired focal point or pattern. For ideal phase holograms, the coupled–wave theory, as applied by H. Kogelnik1, predicts diffraction efficiencies as high as 100%. This implies that all the power in the expanded laser beam could be diffracted into the focal point or pattern. Single focal point holographic lenses have been produced with 40% diffraction efficiency. These lenses …

A Comparison Of Sulfur Sensitization On Silver Bromide And Silver Iodobromide Emulsions, Frederick Marland Jr
A Comparison Of Sulfur Sensitization On Silver Bromide And Silver Iodobromide Emulsions, Frederick Marland Jr
Theses
In emulsion literature, it has been stated that silver iodobromide emulsions can be sensitized more efficiently than pure silver bromide. 20 Recently, work has been published comparing the two emulsion types, using single jet emulsions with high internal versus surface sensitivity. Tani found that when the internal / surface sensitivity ratio increased because of the addition of iodide, the ratio of sulfur sensitization also increased. 5 This showed that the increase in sensitivity upon chemical sensitization was greater for the iodobromide emulsion, and can be explained by the lower sensitivity of the unsensitized silver iodobromide. In this experiment, internal sensitivity …
Image Quality Of A Multiple-Pass Optical Contrast Enhancement Technique, Dudley Boden
Image Quality Of A Multiple-Pass Optical Contrast Enhancement Technique, Dudley Boden
Theses
People have been looking for means of recovering underdeveloped images since the inception of photography. The use of two partially reflective parallel mirrors on either side of the negative is one of the more simple possabilities. This system has been investigated to see how much contrast enhancement it provides and what affect it has on resolution and graininess. It has been found that contrast gains of 1.5 to about 3.0 times can be expected for images with densities from .14 to .30. Also the resolution of low contrast images is increased slightly and graininess is decreased by almost three times. …
A Quantitative Study Of Cuprous Oxide Photodismutation, Anne Dresden Bowman
A Quantitative Study Of Cuprous Oxide Photodismutation, Anne Dresden Bowman
Theses
A cuprous oxide emulsion was made using noodling and washing emulsion making techniques. An attempt to use phthalated gelatin and coagulation washing resulted in the formation of cuprous hydroxide and destruction of the phthalated gel molecule and lack of coagulation within the emulsion. Cuprous oxide was also slurried with water and coated onto unglazed porcelain plates. The density-log exposure relationship was linear for the cuprous oxide slurry and non-linear for the cuprous oxide emulsion. The cuprous oxide film gave a speed value twenty-five times greater than that obtained with the slurry. The cuprous oxide dismutation system possesses great variability and …

A Market Opportunity Analysis For New Homes With Solar Assisted Heat Pump Systems In The St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Sandra L. Wilson
A Market Opportunity Analysis For New Homes With Solar Assisted Heat Pump Systems In The St. Louis Metropolitan Area, Sandra L. Wilson
Theses
This 1978 thesis by Sandra L. Wilson explores the market potential for solar-assisted heat pump systems in new residential constructions within the St. Louis metropolitan area. The study utilizes a Market Opportunity Analysis (MOA) model to assess the economic, natural, technological, social/political, and legal environments influencing the adoption of this technology.
The analysis highlights that while the technology for solar-assisted heat pumps—which combine solar collectors with heat pump efficiency—is viable, consumer demand remains low. This sluggish demand is attributed to high initial costs (estimated between $10,000 and $12,000 in 1978), a lack of public understanding, and the absence of observable …
The Development Of Creative Self-Expression: A Right Hemispheric Approach, Valerie Rope
The Development Of Creative Self-Expression: A Right Hemispheric Approach, Valerie Rope
Theses
Valerie Rope’s 1978 thesis, The Development of Creative Self-Expression: A Right-Hemispheric Approach, explores how engaging the brain’s right hemisphere fosters creativity and emotional well-being. Rooted in humanistic psychology, the study examines the dichotomous functions of the brain’s hemispheres—where the left hemisphere processes analytical and verbal tasks, and the right hemisphere governs intuition, spatial awareness, and artistic expression.
Rope details how early childhood experiences shape creative development, emphasizing that many individuals experience creative blocks due to left-brain dominance reinforced by traditional education. She presents a right-hemispheric approach to drawing and painting that helps individuals overcome these barriers. Techniques such as …
