The roles of scale, contrast and spectral difference in visual detection and recognition was investigated. Geometrical target arrays were produced and projected using a rear projection apparatus. Scale was varied using combined photographic reduction and slide projection. Contrast levels were adjusted in projection of lithographic target arrays using neutral density filtration arrangements in the projection apparatus. Experimentally obtained cumulative probability of detection and combined detection and recognition was examined relative to established combinations of target scale, contrast and spectral difference. The purpose of this study is to evaluate new types of materials and technologies in the fast-changing bindery industry. An optimum binding method (OBM) is being determined by using different brands of cold emulsion polyvinyl acetate, different adhesive, binding methods, spine preparation, and papers. Testing is performed with a combination of materials and technologies to determine the actual binding strength and performance of adhesives. Interimage effects have long been recognized as a factor in the reproduction of color. Reversal materials are no exception and exhibit interimage effects which have previously been revealed through techniques using END analysis. This study presents a method for revealing the presence of interimage effects in a reversal film's Modulation Transfer Function. Utilizing filtering techniques, two dyes of a three color transparency are eliminated from the final image by exposure and development. This thesis describes a screening experiment designed to determine which of seven paper characteristics influence dot gain in web offset lithography. Dot gain is the enlargement of halftone dots during printing from plate to paper with a resultant increase in dot area. The variability of dot gain during a press run and from run to run is detrimental to the quality of black and white and color reproductions. A new method for determining the modulation transfer function (MTF) for photographic films is described. The MTF and corresponding line spread function are approximated by carefully chosen models which are uniquely specified by a few parametric constants. By estimating the parameters in space and frequency simultaneously, the interactions between the two domains result in improved estimates over those provided by either domain alone. A computer algorithm has been written to determine the parameter constants that define the best-fit model for the emulsion MTF.

The relationship between information capacity and the ability of photointerpreters to identify vehicles in simulated aerial reconnaissance was investigated. An aerial scene lighting simulator was constructed and used in the production of a series of simulated aerial reconnaissance photographs of models of military tanks and trucks. The information capacity of these photos was varied by defocussing the taking camera and the simulated ground scale was varied by changing the taking camera reduction. Duplicate positives of these images were evaluated by trained military photointerpreters who determined the resolving power and attempted to identify the vehicles from a key provided. The effect of simultaneous intensification on the detective quantum efficiency of Kodak high definition aerial film type 3414 is investigated. The detective quantum efficiency or DQE varies from .00086 % to .115 % for the unintensified exposure over a log exposure range of 0.9, with the peak at .1223 %. This exposure has a base+fog density of 0.06. Different degrees of simultaneous intensification result in varying values of DQE. The exposure with simultaneous intensification which produced a base+fog of 0.24 gave the maximum sensitometric speed incease by a factor of 1.38 f/stops or 158 %. This exposure varies in DQE …

Experimental settling velocities for three different sizes of Delrin spheres in Ucon lubricant were determined at 20.2 degrees Celsius in order to confirm the validity of a theoretically derived equation for the settling of a sphere in the proximity of a corner. The experiments were conducted in a wedge shaped column with a circular sector base, filled with the viscous fluid, where the angle of the wedge was varied for experimental purposes. The distance from the wedge apex to the particle was also changed for the different runs.

Experimental results of the SP Sephadex (C-50) voidage at pH cycling zone are in quantitative agreement with previous test method, so the voidage estimated from draining the interstital aqueous can be used in pH-parametric pumping. The optional displacement volume in semicontinuous pH-parametric pump of different buffer concentration can be predicted from voidage. The desorption of a acetic acid and water solution with an inert gas was experimentally investigated using a perforated plate distillation column having 17 actual trays. An inert air stream flowing countercurrent was used to strip the water from the acetic acid and water solution.

The feed composition was 0.2509 mole fraction acetic acid. The experimental results showed the best obtainable separation to be 0.16118 and 0.3965 mole fraction acetic acid in the overhead condensate and bottoms respectively, at an average column operating temperature of 56.0 degrees centigrade. This research deals with a study of speed and contrast of daguerreotype plates that receive varying levels of sensitizing to the fumes of iodine, then bromine, and finally, a second iodizing. This sensitizing operation along with mercury development and gold gilding are characteristic of the process in its most improved state. Statistical analysis reveals how iodizing and bromizing affect speed and contrast. A field study was conducted to relate the sensitometric data to images produced in the camera.
