Characteristics Of Thermoplastic Sensitivity Due To Thickness, Jeffrey Fleisher

Thermoplastic, as a relief image recording material, has several advantageous characteristics. All processing is dry, development is almost instantaneous and in situ, and the recorded image can be erased and reused. Theoretical studies have shown that the amount of relief image formed in a thermoplastic is a function of the thermoplastic thickness and frequency of input exposure. This thesis shows that this relationship is valid under a number of physical restraints. Results indicate that there is a thickness to input-signal-modulation interaction within the thermoplastic. Very often, different results are obtained when colored originals and/or reproductions under different so-called standard light sources are evaluated. A possible explanation for the different results is that not all admissible standard sources have the same spectral power distribution, either due to differences in manufacturing or due to aging. A possible solution to the problem would be to determine how the spectral power distribution of a given illuminant differs from the standard (D5000) distribution by visually comparing suitable metameric grays with a stable non-selective gray under the illuminant in question. The development of a closed loop press control system has been the goal of many press manufacturers in recent years. These closed loop systems are designed to collect data from sample press sheets by measuring certain process variables which are considered to be indicators of press control. It has been repeatedly suggested that chemical sensitization by sulfur compounds depends not only on the formation of silver sulfide, but on its rearrangement on the grain surface to form sensitivity centers. The most direct evidence for this is that there is no sensitization on addition of soluble sulfide to the emulsion which forms silver sulfide, but, on heating the emulsion with the sulfide for a longer time and a higher temperature than those used for thiosulfate sensitization, equivalent sensitization can be obtained. Fourier analysis and a computer were used to generate the Fourier series and coefficients for the transmission distribution of a square wave target and the effective exposure produced on Kodak Plus-X film. This was performed in an effort to find a workable alternative to the proposed American National Standards Institute (ANSI) method for the determination of the photographic modulation transfer function. The results showed that the square wave method generated a curve with the same general trend as the conventional ANSI method. In the evaluation of conventional photographic imaging systems the non-linearity of the macroscopic curve can easily be dealt with by examining the "effective exposure" rather than expressing the density or transmittance. Dealing with the nonlinearities on a microscopic level, however, is very difficult since they result from development adjacency effects. A tool was made using a "V-shaped" groove design by G.W. Schumann which consists of a series of microscopic linear density wedges. The density wedges were made by filling V-cut grooves in a high quality acrylic plastic with a carbon-epoxy dispersion.
