The design was to have implemented the command language of the Digital Group Z-80 operating system and and have the capability of assembling source programs written using the Motorola M6800 assembly language mnemonics. A readability gauge was constructed which objectively gauges the readability of printed matter. In the past such gauges have been produced using photographically created noise. In this study a gauge was constructed using noise generated by a computer. This gauge was evaluated and compared with a gauge produced using the photographic technique of noise generation. The computer generated gauge proved to be as good as the photographic gauge at detecting differences in legibility of printed type. It was also found that the only two causes of variability in the legibility samples used were letter size and letter contrast. Using only …

An available Herrnfeld Sensitometer has been rebuilt and modified to include a six position filter wheel, three narrow band interference filters, a separate D.C. power supply, and a central control panel. The modified sensitometer expedites the single layer exposure of color film. The system accomplishes this by using interference filters whose band-width peaks are matched to the peak spectral sensitivity of each emulsion layer to be exposed. A D.C. power supply has been included to eliminate lamp ripple caused by the oscillations that occur in the A.C. line. Conditions for producing the Sabattier effect in Eastman fine grain release positive 5302 film were established. Modifications of the second developer to develop more internal latent image by the addition of potassium iodide or to increase solution ~ physical development by the addition of sodium thiocyanate and sodium sulfite were performed. These modifications made no significant change in the Sabattier effect. When chemical fog (from sodium borohydride) was substituted for the exposure during development, no reversal corresponding to the Sabattier effect was obtained.

A language CONCUR is defined which permits the definition and initiation of asynchronous processes. The language was inspired by Modula, a language proposed by Wirth for realtime programming. CONCUR removes Modula's restrictions on the placement of process declarations and invocations in order to study the implications of process support more fully- Most of the other sophisticated features of Modula, such as modules, structure types, and procedures, have also been removed to focus attention on processes and their particular requirements. A test program has been conducted to measure the vibration damping of three designs of steam turbine blades. These blades were tested in their root attachments, sectioned from retired rotors. Blade loading was accomplished in a new type of blade damping test rig and damping was evaluated in the lowest tangential and axial blade modes. The test environment was room temperature air. A questionnaire-type survey was constructed, field tested, and then administered to eighty selected elementary and secondary St. Charles, Missouri teachers related to their acquisition, implementation, perceptions, and attitudes regarding Building and Applying Strategies for Intellectual Competencies in Students (BASICS). It was designed to answer questions this writer and the district officials wanted answered by teachers who had taken in-service BASICS instruction. A series of del iberately underexposed Kodak Film Type Tri-X negatives were first, conventionally developed, the image silver made radioactive with sulfur-35 thiourea, and by using an autoradiographic technique, the image recovered on X-ray film. The resolution and characteristic curve parameters of the final image compared to those of the original donor image were determined by varying the secondary exposure time (contact time between radioactivated film and x-ray emulsion), type of x-ray films and exposure levels. The Tri-X Pan emulsion donor image was amplified using Kodak "NMC", "MA" and "RP" X-ray films as receivers. "NMC" was slightly preferable to "MA", …

Single run neutral type iodobromide emulsions of 1, 5 and 10 mole % were made similarly. On development to 0.7 gamma with Kodak developers D23 and DK50, it was found that the 10% iodide emulsion had faster speed than the 1% iodide emulsion but yet its granularity was no greater than the 1% iodide emulsion. There is no evidence that the performance in D23 as compared to DK50 was improved with increasing iodide percentage.

The depolarization of backscattered polarized incident radiation which is expressed as a depolarization ratio was investigated as a means of monitoring the mass concentration of particles in stacks from coal-fired burners. This involved the design of an instrument that would detect small levels of radiation. Two methods were investigated. The first utilized a Gallium Arsenide laser and a silicon detector diode; the second was composed of a xenon flash lamp and a photomultiplier detector tube.
