Calculations Of Isobaric Phase Enthalpy Differences For Binary Systems From Vapor-Liquid Equilibrium Data, Steven Merrill Harvey

Equations relating isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium data to heats of vaporization are useful in testing the thermodynamic consistency of experimental VLE data and in the design of distillation equipment. Several researchers have proposed such equations based on the Gibbs-Duhem equation. At low pressures, simplified versions of these equations were successfully used to test the consistency of published VLE and enthalpy data. At high pressures, equilibrium phase enthalpy differences were calculated from rigorous equations using a modified form of the Redlich-Kwong equation to calculate fugacity coefficients. Cis,cis-dipropenyl ether was prepared by potassium t-butoxide catalyzed rearrangement of diallyl ether in diglyme solution. Pyrolysis was used in an attempt to produce an isomeric dipropenyl ether mixture with a high percentage of the less stable trans,trans isomer; 21.6% trans,trans-dipropenyl ether was produced by pyrolysis at 395°C, but formation of an azeotropic byproduct in significant quantities negated the feasibility of this synthesis. A mixture of 45.7% cis,cis-, 43.6% cis,trans-, and 10.7% trans,trans-dipropenyl ether was produced by mercuric acetate catalyzed isomerization at 80°C, and the mixture was separated on a Nester/Faust spinning band column of two hundred theoretical plates.

This thesis describes two kinematic models of human knee which may be used to study the motion of the knee and the forces in the ligaments of the knee. In one model, the ligaments are simulated by rigid links connected to links representing the articulating bones at the centroids of the areas of insertion of the ligaments. The condylar higher pair connections are simulated by equivalent linkages connected by resolutes. In an advanced model, the rigid ligament links are replaced by springs.

A continuous fermentation assembly was constructed and studies on the growth of the organism, Vibrio succinogenes, and its production of asparaginase was conducted. Results were compared with that already performed on a batch system and showed that a continuous fermentation produced 31.83 I.U. enzymes/mM ammonium formate compared to 17.4 I.U. enzyme/mM formate for batch.

Parametric pumping, both batch and continuous, and cycling zone adsorption are theoretically scrutinized for various operating conditions by using the concept of equilibrium stages. The model system is Haemoglobin-Albumin-CM sepharose, a physical system in which a local equilibrium between liquid and sorbent in the layers of the separating medium in the column is characterized. For the batch process, the steady-state concentrations in both top and bottom reservoirs are found to be independent of the number of equilibrium stages, provided that a = 1 (i.e., number of transfer steps/number of stages).. A mathematical model describing the displayed selectivity of the kidney nephron to macromolecules of varying particle size is presented. Diffusion and electrical forces are considered to be the sole mechanisms of transfer. The mass transfer principles responsible for selectivity are considered to occur within the capillary structure, and not within the membrane wall. A charge is assumed to be characteristic of the macromolecule and the membrane wall. Models describing both charged and uncharged solutes are developed.

This report describes the results of a study comparing ASA speed, contrast index, and resolution from a developer time series. The time series was made on six levels each of PEO-400, -600, -1000, and -1500 added to DMAAC's "B" developer. Kodak's SO-277, low contrast, and SO-243, high contrast, aerial duplicating films were used. Results show that PEO-400, at a concentration of 30ml/l, can be a material help in getting higher speeds and contrast index from SO-277 aerial duplicating film without loss of resolution.

A comparison of three commonly used antifoggants was made. Their effect on the formation of fog and image density development was studied using a rate factor of development. This rate factor is defined as the slope of the curve for density-log development time. Bromide and benzotriazole were found to have no effect on the rate of development whereas 1-phenyl-5-mercaptotetrazole was found to significantly reduce the rate of development. Bromide and benzotriazole were found to cause a suppression of image density only by increasing the time before density formation begins.

Minimization Of Unwanted X-Ray Exposures On Conventional Photographic Films By Developer Modification, Michael L. Rudolph

Experiments were done to reduce the influence of unwanted X-ray exposures on Kodak Plus-X film. Variations of surface developer components showed no favorable results. The concentration of KBr was varied up to 10 grams per liter with again, no favorable results. The incorperation of benzitriazole decreased base plus fog from values of .81 to .56 with a significant decrease in speed. Phenyl mercaptotetrazole was extreamly effective in decreasing both base plus fog and speed.

This thesis studied the relationship between the MTF's of a color emulsion used for photographic paper but coated on clear base. Analysis of the MTF curves show differences that can be attributed to interimage effects. The effects in the red and blue sensitive layers caused a decrease in the overall MTF of the film.

It is hypothesized that there is a model useful in predicting reactions to a given type style based on atmosphere value and usage. The majority of the literature on this subject is nonempirical. It is characterized by the author's stating their opinions with little or no attempt to validate them. The empirical literature shows that there is an emotional connotation associated with particular type faces. This thesis proposes a new method for assessing communicative competence among ESL learners by using discourse analysis as the foundation for a placement test. Margaret B. When designing a telephone switching system, it is necessary to ensure that the system will be able to handle a prescribed quantity of traffic (telephone calls) ; both at any particular instant and during a given period of time. By modelling the switching system with a digital computer, it is possible to determine the traffic handling capability of the system prior to investing in a prototype.
