The Effect Of Photographic Reducers In Autoradiographic Intensification Method For Image Recovery Of Incorrectly Exposed Radiographs, Donald Vachon

Autoradiographic image intensification methods for recovering the images of underexposed step wedges, resolution targets and radiographs were investigated. The fog level of the intensified image was decreased by treating the film in a subproportional photographic reducer (mixture of potassium ferricyanide and sodium thiosulfate) prior to activation with S-35 thiourea. The fog level of intensified images of a step wedge decreased from a density of 1.32 to .12, the maximum contrast increased from 2.08 to 5.52, the relative speed increase calculated at 0.6 above fog level increased from 3.05 to 4.06 while resolution remained the same at 5.0 lines per millimeter.Radiographs …

Continuous pH-parametric pumping separations of a haemoglobin - albumin - CM Separose system were experimentally investigated. The parapump system has a feed, containing the protein mixture to be separated, introduced alternately to the top and bottom of the chromatographic column. The top and bottom products are withdrawn from the apparatus during the bottom and top feed respectively. It is shown that under certain conditions the pH-driven parametric pump has the capacity for removal of a protein component from one product fraction and large enrichment in the other fraction. Moreover, the continuous process can be operated with a large feed throughput.

A complex of the lanthanide salt, praseodymium nitrate, and the crown ether, 15-crown-5 has been isolated. The characterization of this complex by elemental analysis, melting point, H and C NMR, UV-visible and IR has indicated that the isolable solid compound is a 1:1 stoichiometric complex of the two reactants and is unsolvated. A new procedure for obtaining the Chemical Spread Function of an emulsion-developer combination is discussed. This procedure consists of directly measuring the Optical Modulation Transfer Function (MTFO) by scanning the sinusoidal object irradiance distribution through the non-developed emulsion using a microdensitometer. The Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) of the processed emulsion is determined in the conventional manner. Then the Chemical Modulation Transfer Function (MTFC) is determined from the linear relationship: MTF = MTFC X MTFO. Hypersensitization using H2 gas is the most recent addition to the techniques available to reduce the effects of low intensity reciprocity law failure. Because of the presence of addenda in all commercially available emulsions, the interactive effects of hydrogen sensitization with a common stabilizer (4-methyl-6-hydroxy-1,3,3a,7-tetraazaindene) and a common form of chemical sensitization (Sulfur Sensitization) alone and together were investigated. A primitive, single jet emulsion was coated with and without the above addenda. Samples were paired and either treated to a hydrogen baking process at 65°C for 20 minutes, or left untreated. A study has been made of the printed images from a projection printer whose light source can be varied to provide illumination of various levels of partial coherence. The coherence interval for five light source configurations was measured with a shearing interferometer at the object plane of the printer. Many test images were made with the printer for each of the five degrees of partial coherence and results showing image quality as a function of coherence interval have been reported. An optical system using spherical and cylindrical optics can convert area-modulated spatial sinusoidal targets to intensity-modulated spatial sinusoidal images. A specific system was analyzed with a spot diagram. System response to 30 cycles-mm~l is predicted. An Intensity Scale Sensitometer for testing the photographic response of Graphic Arts materials was built and evaluated. The sensitometer utilizes a stepped area diaphragm and a cylindrical lens to produce a stepped illuminance distribution at the film plane. Both tungsten and pulsed xenon lamps are provided. A computer aided study was used to find the optimum lamp position with respect to the reflector. Knowledge of how an image is changed by a given modification of its Fourier transform is important when attempting to find solutions to problems in image processing. Several types of filters were used to modify the Fourier transforms of an edge and a bartarget. The images were reconstructed from the modified transforms to determine the change produced by a given modification. Various regions of the Fourier transform determine specific characteristics of the image. The amplitude of the low frequencies controls the form and average level of the image, while the amplitude of the high frequencies effects sharp transitions and noise.

Axisymmetric Air Jet Impinging On A Convex Hemispherical Plate, David C. Chan

Experimental investigation was conducted on an axisymmetric, submerged air jet impinging normally on a smooth convex hemisphere. Three nozzle diameters of 0.5" (12.7mm), 0.375" (9.525mm) and 0.25" (6.35mm) were used and tests were run at Reynolds number range of 14,700 to 84,000.

The results obtained in the free jet and deflection zones were found to confirm the works of previous investigators. As for the fully developed wall jet region, the following points are noted:
