Small Area Densitometry Utilizing Fiber Optics, Eric D. Bruening May 1981

Small Area Densitometry Utilizing Fiber Optics, Eric D. Bruening

Theses

A transmission densitometer utilizing fiber optics for the efflux geometry was designed, constructed, and tested with several black and white films, and one color film. The system was semi-specularly illuminated and used semi-specular collection. The system demonstrates the feasibility of using fiber optic bundles in sensitometric equipment. Scattering properties of silver emulsions, color dye infra-red radiation transmission, and assorted electronic factors which introduce error in densitometric values are observed and discussed.

Qualities Of Uncoated Groundwood Paper Affecting Adhesive Binding Strength, Kenneth S. Gross May 1981

Qualities Of Uncoated Groundwood Paper Affecting Adhesive Binding Strength, Kenneth S. Gross

Theses

This investigation has examined the adhesive binding of paper, with particular attention to the action of the fiber/adhesive interface. The efforts of this research were concentrated on relating properties of the paper to strength of the resultant binding. To simulate the problems of economical binding styles, uncoated groundwood paper and hot melt adhesives were studied. Although the hypotheses assumed that a strong interfiber bond within the sheets would lead to a strong binding, it was found that the most critical factor was not the strength of the sheet, but the availability of the fibers to the adhesive. The strength of …

Factors Influencing The Acceptance Of Computer Assisted Estimating, Sharon Ryan May 1981

Factors Influencing The Acceptance Of Computer Assisted Estimating, Sharon Ryan

Theses

In spite of its advantages over manual estimating methods, computer assisted estimating (CAE) lacks acceptance in the printing industry today. Possible reasons for non-acceptance are: 1) the cost of CAE, 2) CAE's lack of versatility, 3) printing manager's lack of knowledge on the subject of CAE and/or computers in general, and 4) the small size of the majority of the printing companies does not warrant the use of CAE. A survey questionnaire was designed for the purpose of finding out how printing companies feel about CAE, and if the reasons listed above are, in fact, major influences on their decision …

Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer

Theses

Kimberly Riemer’s thesis, Art Therapy as a Means of Ego Enhancement for the Severely and Profoundly Mentally Retarded (1981), explores the impact of art therapy on individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. The study was conducted as part of a six-month practicum, during which Riemer worked with both children and adults in a specialized educational and vocational setting.

Drawing from psychological theories, particularly those of Erik Erikson, Riemer argues that ego development is crucial for mentally retarded individuals. She hypothesizes that if art therapy can aid emotionally disturbed individuals, it should also benefit those with cognitive impairments. Through structured …

The Effects Of Training Parents In Divergent Questioning On The Creativity Of The Pre-School Child, Judith E. Brown May 1981

The Effects Of Training Parents In Divergent Questioning On The Creativity Of The Pre-School Child, Judith E. Brown

Theses

This study was designed to investigate whether teaching mothers to ask divergent questions would have a direct effect on their four year old child 's creativity. It was hypothesized that children whose mothers received the training in divergent questioning techniques would do better on a test of creativity than children whose mothers, did not receive the training.

Twenty mother and child groups were included in the study. The twenty were divided randomly into two groups, ten groups to receive the treatment and ten to receive no treatment. Six treatment sheets were then administered in the homes to the experimental group …

The Theoretical Foundations Of Psycho-Diagnostics: A Comparison Of Dynamic Psychiatry And Ego Developmental Psychiatry, Marian Rice May 1981

The Theoretical Foundations Of Psycho-Diagnostics: A Comparison Of Dynamic Psychiatry And Ego Developmental Psychiatry, Marian Rice

Theses

Marian Rice's thesis compares two models of psychiatry: dynamic and ego developmental. The dynamic model, rooted in classical psychoanalytic theory, focuses on resolving the Oedipal conflict. The ego developmental model emphasizes object relations theory and resolving the rapprochement crisis. The thesis explores the history of psychoanalytic theory, highlighting the evolution of Freud's ideas and the contributions of other theorists like Reich, A. Freud, and Hartmann. Object relations theory, a key aspect of ego developmental psychology, is discussed in detail, examining the works of Klein, Fairbairn, Winnicott, Balint, and Mahler. The thesis concludes by summarizing both models and emphasizing the importance …

A Humanistic/Existential Approach To A Universal Symbol, Linda Sweeney May 1981

A Humanistic/Existential Approach To A Universal Symbol, Linda Sweeney

Theses

This paper explores the therapeutic potential of the universal heart symbol in the context of humanistic–existential art therapy. The author situates the work within a tradition that emphasizes creativity, spirituality, and the search for meaning, presenting the heart as a transcultural and archetypal image capable of guiding clients toward self-discovery. Unlike symptom-focused or diagnostic approaches, this perspective underscores the transformative role of symbols and imagery in facilitating psychological growth and healing.

The heart, as both biological organ and cultural metaphor, is shown to occupy a central place in human imagination and artistic expression. Across history and across cultures, it has …

Simultaneous High Performance Liquid Chromatographic Determination Of Procainamide, N-Acetylprocainamide, Disopyramide, Mono-N-Dealkyldisopyramide, Quinidine, And Propranolol In Serum, James F. Wesley

Theses

We describe a method for the simultaneous high performance liquid chromatographic determination of several antiarrhythmic drugs and some of their metabolites after extraction from 2.5 ml of spiked pooled sera. The extracts were applied to a C8 reversed phase column. Nine compounds of interest were resolved within the 30 minute run. An initial mobile phase of 80% phosphate (25 mmol/L, pH 3.5), 20 % organic (acetonitrile: methanol, 2:3) was maintained for 2 min at which time a linear gradient was used to change the mobile phase to 30% phosphate, 70% organic at 20 min after injection. This composition was maintained …

Correlation Between Maximum Density And Log Exposure Range Of Quality Prints, David Baer May 1981

Correlation Between Maximum Density And Log Exposure Range Of Quality Prints, David Baer

Theses

An investigation was made to determine the correlation between the maximum density and log exposure range of photographic paper when making "quality" prints. The 1966 ANSI log exposure range formula assumes that papers which have the same log exposure range but differ in maximum density will print the same negative successfully. It has been shown with 27 Judges that when the 1966 ANSI log expo sure range formula is used the maximum density has an effect on the effective log exposure range such that papers which have the same log exposure range but differ in maximum density will not print …

Depth Of Field In High Magnification Fine Grain Photography, Mark Konieczny May 1981

Depth Of Field In High Magnification Fine Grain Photography, Mark Konieczny

Theses

Under normal, general purpose photographic conditions, depth of field is determined by the size of a geometrical blur circle on the negative or print. Under high magnification conditions, another means of measurement must be used based on the wave nature of light and the resolution of the imaging system. For this purpose, an effective depth of field was determined on the basis that no significant deterioration of image quality could be detected by means of resolution and Transfer function in the range of frequencies where the eye transfer function is at its peak. The experimental values obtained were compared with …

The Halftone Effect In Color Photographic Enlargements, Rick Crowsey May 1981

The Halftone Effect In Color Photographic Enlargements, Rick Crowsey

Theses

In continuous-tone photography, a 'Halftone Effect" sometimes occurs that alters the tone reproduction in a distinctive way. Highlight contrast is decreased and middletone densities are lowered. Published data show that this effect occurs in black-and-white photography when the grain pattern of the negative is reproduced very sharply in the print . High-magnification enlargements are especially susceptible. Does a corresponding effect occur in color photography? A search of the literature reveals no answer. The research here described is to determine, by direct measurements of densities in sharp and blurred enlargements, the magnitude of the halftone effect in particular color enlargements from …

A Comparison Of The Random Dot And The Conventional Halftone Printing Process With Respect To Color Characteristics, Sanat Hazra May 1981

A Comparison Of The Random Dot And The Conventional Halftone Printing Process With Respect To Color Characteristics, Sanat Hazra

Theses

A comparative study was made of random dot printing and conventional halftone printing with respect to color characteristics. Random dot printing is similar to continuous tone printing or very high frequency screen ruling and is capable of overcoming the limitatio of halftone printing. The randomly selected dots are achieved by the grain structure of the pre- sensitized printing plates. The advantages and the disadvantages of this process over conventional halftone printing process are discussed. The images and the test targets of both the processes were exposed to, and printed from a single plate for each process color so as to …

An Investigation Of The Vapor Cushion Thickness, Temperature, And Vaporization Time Of Leidenfrost Drops, Frank Bonsignore May 1981

An Investigation Of The Vapor Cushion Thickness, Temperature, And Vaporization Time Of Leidenfrost Drops, Frank Bonsignore

Theses

The subject of this investigation was the film boiling of liquid drops on a hot horizontal surface (the Leidenfrost Phenomenon) . Using Gottfried and Bell's model of a Leidenfrost drop, the thickness of the vapor cushion beneath film boiling water drops, 6, was calculated over a range of test plate and drop temperatures. The results indicated that the vapor cushion thickness varied very slowly with test plate temperature and maintained a finite value at test plate temperatures where the Leidenfrost Phenomenon cannot be initiated. To experimentally verify this fact, a heat exchanger was fabricated to cool the hot test plate …

Image Degradation In A Diffusion Transfer Process, Peter Petch May 1981

Image Degradation In A Diffusion Transfer Process, Peter Petch

Theses

The Diffusion Transfer Process is now widely used in the Graphic Arts industry, and it is important to determine to what length different factors affect the optimum use of it. The effects of exposure, age of the processing solution, and line frequently on the image quality of the Kodak PMT system were studied. Exposure was varied by exposing the material to a standard illuminance for different amounts of time; the processing solution was aged by bubbling air through it for varied amounts of time; line frequency was varied by using a Kodak sinusoidal target and examining the images of two …

Scene Illuminate Effect On Additive Two-Color Reproduction, John C. Manfredo May 1981

Scene Illuminate Effect On Additive Two-Color Reproduction, John C. Manfredo

Theses

Whether a two-color reproduction from a red and green additive process is acceptable depends largely on the nature of the scene and its illumination. Additive two-color reproduction will be explored here using different scene illuminants and also different red and green filter combinations. Two projection methods are also examined. Red and green separations were produced by photographing a scene through 16 different filter combinations and 3 different scene illuminants. These separations are then projected two different ways. One method involves projecting the separations back through the red and green filters they were taken through, while in the other method the …

Edge Sharpness Effects On Computer-Generated Holograms, Clinton S. Potter May 1981

Edge Sharpness Effects On Computer-Generated Holograms, Clinton S. Potter

Theses

Computer-generated holograms refer to a class of holograms which are produced as a graphical output from a computer. This paper investigates the relation. ship between the resolution in the system used to re duce the graphical artwork to a reasonable size for diffracting light and the quality of the reconstructed hologram. A number of reduction schemes are examined including a one-step reduction onto a general purpose film, a one-step reduction onto a high resolution film and a two-step reduction scheme using coherent illumination during the second reduction.

The Evaluation Of Positive Photoresist Speed, Donis Flagello May 1981

The Evaluation Of Positive Photoresist Speed, Donis Flagello

Theses

The feasibility of photographic speed values for positive photoresist is evaluated. Speed is defined as the reciprocal of exposure necessary to produce a desired response. An outline of the microlithographic process, the chemistry of positive resist, and previous exposure models precede the experimental body of work to facilitate understanding of the photoresist system. The experimental method proposes a mathematical model describing the resist response to exposure. Photographic speed values result from this model. They are tested for sensitivity to process changes using Analysis of Variance. One speed definition is chosen as a possible standard and process control. It is based …

A Digital Image Processing System For Slow Scan Television, James Schueckler May 1981

A Digital Image Processing System For Slow Scan Television, James Schueckler

Theses

This paper describes a low cost, but powerful, digital image processing system. Although general purpose, it was designed for experimentation with amateur radio slow scan television (SSTV). The project involved conceptualizing, designing, building, programming, and operating the complete integrated system. The image format is the SSTV standard: 128 picture elements (pixels) per line, 128 lines, 4 bits per pixel. The IEEE Standard 696 (S-100) microcomputer bus was used for system interconnect to provide flexibility and expandability. Several microcomputer boards were purchased, and two image interface boards were designed and built by the author. One image interface board provides for transmitting …

The Effect Of Temperature And Relative Humidity During Drying On The Covering Power Of Processed X-Ray Films, John M. Lauffer May 1981

The Effect Of Temperature And Relative Humidity During Drying On The Covering Power Of Processed X-Ray Films, John M. Lauffer

Theses

With the constantly decreasing silver reserves and correspondingly higher costs, film manufacturers are continually searching for methods to reduce the amount of silver that is used. By using closely controlled conditions of temperature and saturated salt solutions to provide control of relative humidity during drying of processed x-ray film, it was found that the covering power may be as low as 70$ of its maximum value depending on the conditions used for drying the film. The highest values for covering power existed when the film was dried at low temperatures and high relative humidities or high temperatures and low relative …
