Sensitization Of An Oxadiazole Derivative As An Organic Photoconductor, Claude G. Ceintrey

The sensitization and the spectral sensitization of the photoconductivity of an organic derivative, 2,5-bis (p-diethyl-aminophenyl) - 1,3, 4-oxadiazole, was studied once an electrostatic sensitometer had been built. Among 27 dyes tested representing 8 different classes, only the triarylmethane-type dyes and rhodamine-type dyes have a sensitizing effect which does not seem to be correlated with energy level considerations. The main effect of the sensitizers, once they have formed charge-transfer complexes, is to increase the dark decay reaction, and, thus, they are not suitable as practical products.

Agfapan Vario-XL film was faded at various levels of temperature, humidity, light, and fade time to determine the mathematical relationships of these variables and to examine whether interaction occurs between each factor. Light stability of the film was measured, and the Arrhenius relationship was used to predict dark stability at ambient storage conditions. It was found that the amount of fade, as measured as either a change in transmittance or density, could be mathematically modeled with a high degree of correlation. Unsharp masking is an image enhancement technique used to obtain a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) greater than unity within a given spatial frequency band. In unsharp masking, the mask forms a slightly blurred version of the original image. The result is more severe in the high frequency region than at low frequencies. The final image is made by combining the original positive and the blurred negative images. The optimum tone-reproduction characteristics were determined for a high contrast, a low contrast and a controlled contrast scene, by subjective analysis of the resulting prints. From this, mathematical models of the optimum film characteristic curves and fractional gradients were derived. Optimal system gamma (filmT x paper 7 ) was determined to be between 1.2 and 1.4, however, the gradient contrast was determined for the film so that contrast is defined over the entire toe and straight line regions. Chronic administration of diisopropyl fluorophosphate (DFP) at 72 hour intervals for a total of 14 doses resulted in a reduction in the number of central muscarinic receptors in mice as measured by the specific binding of [3H]Quinuclidinyl benzilate (QNB) to cortical tis sue homogenates (pmole/mg protein). The number of cholinergic receptors were reduced significantly by 12% in DFP treated animals (0.687 + 0.018 pmoles/mg) as compared to vehicle treated controls (0.781 +0.016 pmoles/ mg) after the sixth dose of DFP (Day 17). Parameters have been established for effective removal of low concentrations of silver and cadmium from photographic processing effluents using a CROVEX silver recovery metallic replacement system. Parameters include: total photographic processing effluents (composed primarily of wash effluent, fixer, and developer), residence time, pumping pressures, and maximum heavy metal input. Techniques using these parameters yield silver and cadmium removal approaching 98%.

Counter-current Immunoelectrophoresis (CIE) has been used to detect bacterial capsular polysaccharides in both cerebrospinal fluids and blood serum of children with systemic meningococcal diseases. The sensitivity of the method depends upon the titre of the antisera. It was found that the sensitivity of CIE could not be increased by the method of direct-contact ultraviolet photography. The sensitivity could be increased by one serial dilution, on the average, by the treatment of a 0.25% tannic acid wash for 15 minutes.

"A Case for Family Therapy for Low-Income Families" explores the challenges faced by low-income families in accessing mental health services, particularly family therapy, and presents a model for addressing these challenges. The thesis begins by examining the relationship between social class and mental illness, noting that lower-income individuals face greater barriers to mental health care while also experiencing higher rates of mental illness. These barriers include logistical issues such as transportation, financial constraints, and scheduling conflicts, as well as systemic biases in the mental health delivery system that make it difficult for low-income families to access appropriate care.

An optical system was assembled for a study of spatial filtering and partial coherence. It was used to produce enlargements of microfilm images at a magnification of 12-X. Enhancement of fine-detail contrast was obtained by means of a spatial filter that transmitted most of the light diffracted by the microfilm negative and absorbed about 60$ of the undiffracted light. The filter increased the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the enlarging system by a factor of about 1.5 measured at spatial frequencies lying in the region where the eye is most sensitive. A study was undertaken to gain information concerning the mechanism by which a high contrast emulsion is developed to a significantly increased exposure latitude, without loss of toe speed. Developer properties were altered through variations in pH, bromide ion concentration, developing agent concentration, and the Phenidone */hydroquinone ratio. The results indicate that the bromide ion concentration is the predominant factor reducing both the exposure latitude and the toe speed. The experimental evidence suggests that the bromide reduces the rate of development throughout the exposure range. In this thesis, an experimental investigation was conducted to compare the performance of the continuous pH-parametric pumping and the pH-cycling zone adsorption process on protein separation.

The model system studied was hemoglobin-water. on CM-Sepharose CL-6B (cation) exchanger in a single-column system. Various modes of operation were tried on both the pH-parametric pumping and the pH-cycling zone adsorption method. The separation factors for each mode of operation were computed and compared.

It is shown that the continuous pH-parametric pumping, with circulation to insure the pH uniformity inside the column, has the better separation factor than the pH-cycling zone adsorption method.

Coherent optical spatial filtering can be used to increase the contrast of fine detail in photographs. The images produced, however, contain optical noise blemishes that make the procedure seldom usable in practical photography. A promising method of reducing the optical noise by means of partial coherence in a projection printer has been investigated involving the use of a plurality of point sources. It has been demonstrated, using pictorial enlargements, that subjective sharpness levels may be obtained which are similar to those obtained by using specular illumination while greatly reducing the amount of coherent noise on the image.
