Data from the transportation study aspect of the "Physical Plan for Greater Georgetown", conducted by the Central Housing and Planning Authority as well as data from the files of the Central Transport Planning Unit of the Ministry of …

Evaluation Of The Image Quality Of An Experimental Lenticular Film System For Radiographic Applications, Elizabeth A. Butler Sep 1982

Evaluation Of The Image Quality Of An Experimental Lenticular Film System For Radiographic Applications, Elizabeth A. Butler

Theses

A lenticular film system designed to suppress image degrading crossover during dual screen radiographic exposure is proposed and evaluated. The lenticular screen consists of two sheets of crossed cylindrical lenslets each with a frequency of 25 lenslets/mm. A numerical analysis via optical ray tracing compares the theoretical frequency response of the proposed system to that of a conventional radiographic film. It shows an enhancement in the response by a factor of two, for frequencies 1-4 c/mm. Experimental measurements made on simulations of the proposed system using Kodak film type, SO-241 confirm the predicted improvement in the mid-frequency range. The proposed …

Direct Diffusion Resist For Gravure, Wilson Hurst Sep 1982

Direct Diffusion Resist For Gravure, Wilson Hurst

Theses

One of the most attractive attributes of the gravure process is its ability to print a variable ink film by virtue of cell depth variation. This cell depth variation is achieved through the use of a diffusion resist. All diffusion resists are negative-working and, after exposure, require transfer to plate or cylinder. A "negative-working" resist is one where the emulsion becomes insoluble to the developing solution in those areas struck by actinic radiation. Presently available resists, which are directly applied to plate or cylinder prior to exposure, are not capable of controlling cell depth variation. Thus, the tone range obtainable …

Paper Coating Constituents And Their Influence On Chemical Ghosting, Craig Harmsen Sep 1982

Paper Coating Constituents And Their Influence On Chemical Ghosting, Craig Harmsen

Theses

For many years the printing industry, specifically sheetfed offset and letterpress printers, have been dealing with the problem of chemical ghosting. Traditionally it has been, a problem associated with drying oil inks. More recent research concludes that ghosting is also affected by the permeability of an adjacent substrate. This thesis examines paper coating constituents, their degree of concentration, and what influence they play- with regards to ghosting. A quickset drying oil ink has been found which when subjected to the proper laboratory conditions will display a high degree of colored ghosting. The thesis indicates the method of creating ghosting and …

Marion To Montgomery: A Twenty Year History Of Alabama State University, 1867-1887, Joseph Caver Aug 1982

Marion To Montgomery: A Twenty Year History Of Alabama State University, 1867-1887, Joseph Caver

Theses

Alabama State University is well known as a historically black university and for the involvement of its faculty and students during the civil rights movement. Less attention has been given to the school's remarkable origins, having begun as the Lincoln Normal School in Marion, Alabama, founded by nine former slaves. These men are rightly considered the founders of Alabama State University, as they had the drive and perseverance to face the challenges posed by a racial and political culture bent on preventing the establishment of black schools and universities. It is thanks to the actions of the Marion Nine that …

An Investigation Of The Effect Of An Infrared Post-Exposure Latent Image In A 3m Dry Silver Film, Thomas J. Cardinali

Theses

An investigation to determine the effect of an infrared post-exposure on the latent image in blue sensitive 3M Dry Silver film 7842 was performed. The film was first given a step tablet exposure using the unfiltered output of a tungsten source at 2856 K. A Wratten #87C filter was used with the same source to provide the second, infrared exposure over one half of the first exposure area. Absolute exposure and exposure reciprocity were tested. Processing was by immersion into a bath of 3M fluorocarbon FC-43 maintained at 127C/260F. The original objective, to cause Herschel effect bleaching of latent image, …

Investigation Of The Electronic And Thermal Rearrangement Properties Of Spiro[2,4]Hepta-4,6-Dienes, Raymond K. Crandall Aug 1982

Investigation Of The Electronic And Thermal Rearrangement Properties Of Spiro[2,4]Hepta-4,6-Dienes, Raymond K. Crandall

Theses

The mechanism of thermally induced hydrogen and alkyl migrations in suitably substituted cyclopentadienes have been extensively studied. Although the course and mechanism of alkyl shifts in cyclopentadienes have been investigated, there is currently a lack of agreement on the precise mechanisms of alkyl migrations. It is apparent that the mechanism is largely dependent on the nature of both the migrating substituent and upon other substituents in the molecule and, in some cases, the shift may occur by more than one competing mechanism. Alkyl shifts in spiro substituted cyclopentadienes have been clearly shown to proceed via a conceited pathway. However, the …

Polymerization Of Disubstituted Conjugated Dienes: Synthesis Of 1, 3-Diphenyl-1, 3-Butadiene, David Allen Jul 1982

Polymerization Of Disubstituted Conjugated Dienes: Synthesis Of 1, 3-Diphenyl-1, 3-Butadiene, David Allen

Theses

1, 3-Diphehyl-l, 3-butadiene 3 has been found to rapidly undergo the Diels-Alder reaction at room temperature to yield 1, 3, 4-triphenyl-4-styrylcyclohexene 10. The dimer was characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrosopy. The isomeric diphenylbutadienes were of interest as a model system to study the interaction of steric hindrance and electronic effects in the homopolymerization of disubstituted butadienes. Several synthetic routes to an appropriate tosylate for base catalyzed elimination at low temperatures to avoid dimerization of the monomer were explored and found unsuccessful for various reasons. The monomer was trapped as an iron tricarbonyl complex. This complex …

The study uses Lipham's decision-making model, which involves recognizing a problem, gathering information, considering alternatives, making a choice, and evaluating the outcome.

The author, a member of the planning committee, provided information and suggestions for the study, including criteria for curriculum guides, sample guides from other districts, and a review of goals and objectives. The thesis also explores different value bases and curriculum theories, emphasizing the importance of understanding these values in …

The Application And Analysis Of An Antireflection Coating On A Multilayer Resist System To Generate A 1.0 Μm Aluminum Line Over 0.5 Μm Sio2 Step, Chung-Ta Wu Jul 1982

The Application And Analysis Of An Antireflection Coating On A Multilayer Resist System To Generate A 1.0 Μm Aluminum Line Over 0.5 Μm Sio2 Step, Chung-Ta Wu

Theses

An antireflection coating (ARC) containing polyvinyl alcohol and two dyes was applied to a substrate to form a new multilayer resist system.

Based on the results of the application of the ARC on a planar aluminum substrate, an increase of the latitude of exposure and an improvement of the resist image quality were found.

The ARC had a specific concentration of dyes and a specific thickness. The image was a 1.0 µm line and space pattern. By using the ARC, even though the resist thickness varied from 1.2 µm to 1.5 µm, the resulting 1.0 µm image remained within a …

The Atmospheric Photochemical Stability Of Cc1f2no, Cc12fno, Cc1fno2, And Cc12fno2, George Fazekas

Theses

CC1F2N0, CC1F2N0, CC1F2N02 and CC12FN02 were prepared and purified in the laboratory. Three methods for the preparation of chlorodifluoronitrosomethane were evaluated: 1) decarboxylation of the sodium salt of chlorodifluoroacetic acid in the presence of nitrosyl chloride, 2) nitrosation of chlorodifluoromethanesulfenylchoride and 3) photolysis of bromodichlorofluoromethane in the presence of nitric oxide. The vapor phase decarboxylation of the sodium salt of chlorodifluoroacetic acid in the presence of nitrosyl chloride gave chlorodifluoronitrosomethane with the highest yield and purity. Because the sodium salt of dichlofluoroacetic acid was not available to utilize in a similar manner, dichlorofluoronitrosomethane was prepared from the reaction of dichlorofluoromethanesulfenylchloride …

The Design And Production Of Graininess Samples Using An Ordered Array Binary Imaging System, Paul W. Jones Jul 1982

The Design And Production Of Graininess Samples Using An Ordered Array Binary Imaging System, Paul W. Jones

Theses

A technique is described for producing graininess samples using an ordered array binary imaging device with subsequent photographic and lithographic steps. Such samples could be combined to form a visual scale for use in the rapid assessment of solid area noise of electrophotographic images. The potential advantages of this process include high volume production capabilities and the ease of varying image parameters over a wide range. Analytical models for mean density and Wiener spectrum scale value, WS(0), are developed for the ordered array system and are shown to have general applicability. However, these models are neither precise nor accurate enough …

Digitization, Testing, And Evaluation Of A Device For Rapid Determination Of Rms Granularity, Daniel J. Williams

Theses

A rotary stage microdensitometer was interfaced to an Apple II personal computer for the purpose of making rapid rms granularity measurements. An experimentally determined relationship was found between standard deviation in voltage and rms granularity. By using this relationship the device proved accurate to within 7 percent of the known values of rms granularity on a conventional microdensitometer for the same samples with 95 percent confidence.

Theoretical Determination Of Optimum Split-Filter Exposures For Color-Correction Masks, Jang-Fun Chen Jun 1982

Theoretical Determination Of Optimum Split-Filter Exposures For Color-Correction Masks, Jang-Fun Chen

Theses

Workers have found that a split-filter mask made by consecutive exposures through red, green, and blue filters provides better color correction than a mask exposed through a single filter. Nevertheless, split-filter masking has never been adopted in the direct screen separation method. This may be due to the difficulty of determining the opti mum red: green: blue split-filter exposures. This thesis ad dresses the problem of determining the optimum split-filter ratios needed to expose masks for the direct screen sepa ration method. Optimum exposure ratios were determined with the as sistance of a digital computer by systematically trying out 231 …

Proposal And Investigation Of A Method For Measuring Process Color Variation Via Reflection Densitometer, Russell Harris Jun 1982

Proposal And Investigation Of A Method For Measuring Process Color Variation Via Reflection Densitometer, Russell Harris

Theses

This thesis proposes a method of using reflection density readings taken with a conventional graphic arts densitometer to provide a numeric measure of the visual difference between a sample press sheet and a reference sheet. This numerical measure was developed based on the theory that human response to variation in process color printing is more affected by changes in the proportions of process inks to each other than by variation in the overall inking level of the press sheet. The thesis then goes on to explain how the proposed system was tested. First, a set of color samples was generated. …

Reactions Of Nitrogen Dioxide With Chloride And Bromide Salts, Thomas Allston Jun 1982

Reactions Of Nitrogen Dioxide With Chloride And Bromide Salts, Thomas Allston

Theses

Infrared absorption spectroscopy was used to study the reaction of nitrogen dioxide with a number of halide salts: MX (s) + 2N02 (g), XNO (g) + MN03 (s), where M = metal and X = halogen (CI, Br). This reaction was observed for the chloride and bromide salts of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium. These reactions do not reach thermodynamic equilibrium, and evidence is presented that they are surface controlled. These reactions are very fast and evidence is reported for the relative rates of the chloride and bromide salts. The following mechanism may explain the observed experimental results: (M+X-)(s) + …

Theses

This study was carried out to design a system for the inexpensive treatment of ash pond effluent or leachate. Twelve different coals were burned in three different types of coal fired boilers to determine the influence of coal composition, ash fusion temperatures, boiler additives, combustion conditions and co-firing of natural gas or oil with the coal, on the composition of the fly ash and bottom ash as well as the leaching and sorbate characteristics of the fly ash produced.

The trace elemental analysis consisting of Ti, Cd, Sn, Ni, Pb, Mo, Cu, Cr. Zn, Mn, Ba, and V in the …

Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari May 1982

Investigation Of Mental Workload In A Visual Inspection Task, Michel Alfandari

Theses

This thesis consists of an investigation of the "mental workload" involved in a visual inspection task. A short-term laboratory experiment was conducted on twenty test subjects to study the effects of three typical job-related factors encountered in mental workload situations: load stress, time stress, and motivation. These effects were assessed through the subjects' performances as measured by speed and accuracy data. The analysis of the results revealed that an increase in load stress deteriorates both speed and accuracy, whereas time stress improves speed but only at the expense of accuracy. The expected positive influence of motivational factor (cash prizes) was …

Pattern Generation And Fault Detection In Digital Circuits Using A Microprocessor, Syed Riffat Ali

Theses

The main object of this Professional Project was to establish a microcomputer based system which could detect faults in digital circuits. Hardware and software for the Motorola 6800 microcomputer system was fully developed. Node level diagnostic programs were then used to pump known "Bit Patterns" into digital circuits and responses recorded via Pseudorandom binary sequence generator using CRC code. This method also known as "Signature Analysis" was then applied to detect faults successfully in Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitter or UART Circuits.

Prediction Of Heats Of Mixing By Group Contribution Methods, William Walter Rupp May 1982

Prediction Of Heats Of Mixing By Group Contribution Methods, William Walter Rupp

Theses

Three group contribution methods used to predict heats of mixing were tested: AGSM, UNIFAC with temperature dependent parameters and the modified UNIFAC of Skjold-Jor-gensen et al. The modified UNIFAC provided the best results and was adopted in this study. Primary parameters were obtained for ten groups with alkanes. The simultaneous correlation of cyclic and straight-chain alkanes gave poor results. Attempts to improve the error by changing the group area parameter for cyclic CH2 failed.

A major problem in correlating the experimental data was the multiplicity of roots. The best set of parameters was obtained by using a grid approach …

Thermal Rearrangement Studies Of Deuterium Labeled Dibenzo [A,E] Cyclooctatetraenes, Charles W. Wenger May 1982

Thermal Rearrangement Studies Of Deuterium Labeled Dibenzo [A,E] Cyclooctatetraenes, Charles W. Wenger

Theses

In an attempt to further substantiate the findings of Stiles and Salisbury on the rearrangement of aryl disubstiuted dibenzo [a, e] cyclooctatetraenes a new pair of derivatives were synthesized. The 5,6 and 5,11 dideuteriodibenzo-[a,e] cyclcoctetetraenes were prepared. The 5,6 derivative was prepared starting with dibenzo [a,e] cyclooctene-5,6-dione. The 5,11 derivative was prepared starting with o-tolualdehyde. In the case of the 5,6 derivative the deuterium was introduced by a LiAlD4 reduction of the dibenzo [a,e]-cyclooctene-5,6-dione. The 5,11 derivative had been labeled with deuterium in the final step during the Wittig reaction. The use of methanol-d1 as the solvent in …
