This thesis explores the recurring theme of violence in the works of key Southern writers—William Faulkner, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, and Robert Penn Warren. It argues that violence in Southern literature is not merely sensational or gratuitous, but deeply tied to the region’s historical, social, and cultural realities, particularly the legacies of slavery, the Civil War, and entrenched racial hierarchies. By situating each author within this context, the study demonstrates how acts of violence in their fiction serve as a lens through which to examine moral conflict, social change, and human frailty.

The research is viewed from a theme analysis perspective which attempts to isolate the major characteristics of the description s circumscribing transpersonal psychotherapy that emerged consistently . Certain consistent patterns did, in fact, emerge.

To determine the effects of scheduling on instrumental music programs in the public school districts of Saint Louis County, Missouri, a questionnaire was distributed to fifty-two instrumental music teachers in twenty-eight districts . We proposed to find common concerns shared by instrumental music teachers with regard to the scheduling of their classes. Our respondents concurred on specific scheduling situations that cause either alteration or complete elimination of their programs. The purpose of this study was to develop and test the Wholistic Lifestyle Assessment as a tool to predict the risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Experiment 1 was conducted as a pilot study at Hope Presbyterian Church. Experiment 2 was conducted at the Spring Fitness Festival at the Bridgeton Community Center. There were 52 volunteers at the Fitness Festival who completed the questionnaire. The Production Of Custom Variable Neutral Density Filters Using Film And A Computer Controlled Imaging Device, Gregory A. Hermanson

A system for generating custom variable neutral density filters has been built, characterized, and demonstrated. The desired densities for a neutral density filter are entered into the controlling computer as a function of distance. The program which generates the filter density profile is designed to vary the exposure time by controlling the velocity of the film as it moves under a slit aperture. A custom illumination system was designed and built to provide constant lamp output. The technique can provide the film with the exposure necessary to produce a given density profile.

High Performance Displacement Chromatography Of Estrodial Analogs, David Minicuci

A normal phase semi-preparative scale separation of the estradiol analogs 17-<*-propenyl-3 , 17^-estradiol and 17-*-propenyl-^-estradiol-3-acetate was carried out using High Performance Dicplacement Chromatography (HPDC). Two conventional analytical (10 urn, 4.6 x 250 mm, silica) columns were utilized in series for the semi-preparative system. The displacer used was triethanol amine in chloroform, 10% v/v. A total of 169.8 milligrams of the estradiol analogs were separated and collected in their form from the column effluent. The HPDC runs were monitored using thin layer chromatography (silica TLC) . The displacement fractions were analyzed using HPLC in linear elution mode. Carrier and displacer solutions were scouted for using silica TLC. Displacement TLC was used to find the proper concentration of displacer. The migration rates of the displacer solution on the TLC plates were compared to that on the column using HPLC in the frontal mode. HPDC proved suitable for the utilization of conventional analytical HPLC instrumenta tion for a semi-preparative scale separation.

A series of disubstituted 2-azaadamantanes representing conformationally defined nitrogen mustards incorporated into an adamantyl framework with fixed separation distances between alkylating centers of 3.5 Å. (1: 4,8-dichloro-2-azaadamantane) and 2.5 Å (2: 4,9-dichloro-2-azaadamantane; 3: 4, 10-dichloro-2-azaadamantane) have been synthesized (Henkel et al., (1981) J. Org. A mathematical model of the Nikon Lampas Reflection Measuring Microscope for the fine-line lithography in integrated circuit manufacture has been developed. Optical intensity profiles of a perfect line were computed using computer software supplied by the National Bureau of Standards. The programs were modified for the Lampas microscope. From line profiles, the accuracy of the microscope was calculated. The microscope is accurate down to 6/10 of a micron. All lines below 6/10 of a micron were unresolved.

An experimental unit was built to minimize vibration during measurement of linewidths on integrated circuit photomasks. Linewidths in the range of 0.522 microns to 12.076 microns were measured with the Nikon LASER scanning system. Optical Specialties Inc. VLS-I video system, Nikon Micro Pattern Analyzer slit-scanning system, and the experimental unit. Average variances of 0.0096, 0.0164, 0.0377, and 0.3627 were calculated for each system respectively. The variances were compared using an F-test with the result that each system was significantly different for each linewidth. The theory, development and application of a computer program to balance the combined effects of the shaking force, shaking moment, input torque and individual bearing forces in four bar linkages is presented. The theory assumes the linkage to consist of rigid bodies, and is limited to balancing planar four bar linkages other than sliders. Balancing is accomplished using circular counterweights which are tangentially attached to the bearing joints. Counterweight sizes and locations are determined using nonlinear programming techniques where an objective function, dependent upon all the kinetic parameters, is minimized. The study evaluated several oscillating roller systems and subjectively compared them using several criteria.
