An Investigation Of The Competition Between Surface/Internal Latent-Image Formation In Agbr Core-Shell Emulsions, A. Gary Difrancesco Jan 1985

An Investigation Of The Competition Between Surface/Internal Latent-Image Formation In Agbr Core-Shell Emulsions, A. Gary Difrancesco

Theses

The models for surface /internal latent-image formation by J.F. Hamilton and others were qualitatively investigated. Techniques were also developed to precipitate core-shell emulsions. Although the emulsion precipitation system employed was not highly stable, the major aspects of surface/ internal latent-image competition were successfully demonstrated. It was found that the level of surface /internal latent-image competition has a significant effect on the photographic response of core-shell emulsions.

Mobile Telephone System And Non-Wire Line Network, Daniel Chi Man Cheung Jan 1985

Mobile Telephone System And Non-Wire Line Network, Daniel Chi Man Cheung

Theses

The need to communicate with non-fixed points without the use of wires led to the development of mobile telephone systems in the early 1920's. Since then, the expanding need for mobile phone service and resulting growth have led to the development of the Advanced Mobile Phone Service (AMPS) by the Bell System. This thesis describes the AMPS system and explains how service is provided to mobile units roaming in a typical area of up to 25 square miles. A network is proposed to interconnect service areas to expand the coverage to a much larger geographic area. Efficient use is made …

A Student Scheduling System For A Microcomputer, Michael Mahaney Jan 1985

A Student Scheduling System For A Microcomputer, Michael Mahaney

Theses

This student scheduling system was written for use on a microcomputer to give the local high school more control over the scheduling process. Scheduling systems are used by high schools to schedule their students, balance classes, and print student schedules and class lists. A scheduling system must be flexible to provide for the generation of many different types of schedules. Most scheduling programs currently used are shared by high schools through the use of BOCES (Board of Cooperative Educational Services). Schools send their schedules to the BOCES regional computer centers to be run on mainframe computers. This scheduling system was …

Ektachem Evaluation, Barbara A. Meiklejohn Jan 1985

Ektachem Evaluation, Barbara A. Meiklejohn

Theses

The Eastman Kodak Ektachem 400 Analyzer was evaluated in terms of its precision, linearity, accuracy, and interferences for two colorimetric tests (neonatal bilirubin and albumin), a two point rate colorimetric test (amylase), and four potentiometric tests (sodium, potassium, chloride and carbon dioxide). The precision study results obtained were comparable to those of other laboratory instruments for five of the seven tests under consideration. The exceptions were carbon dioxide at the high range (30 mmol/L) and albumin at the low range (2 g/dl). Linearity checks were satisfactory for all seven tests but albumin, where a negative bias was observed in readings …

Criteria For Selecting Materials Suitable For Application To Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fish, Yvonne Allen Jan 1985

Criteria For Selecting Materials Suitable For Application To Modified Atmosphere Packaging Of Fish, Yvonne Allen

Theses

The process of preservation is an important step in stabilizing perishable items in order for them to withstand distribution, handling, and storage. Preservation can be achieved by several methods, but the method of concern in this paper is that of modified atmosphere storage which is reported to extend the shelf-lives of perishable products. Studies on modified atmosphere storage have emphasized the preservating action of carbon dioxide (CO2) in reducing (1) the extent of microbial spoilage, and (2) the tissue pH of the products so stored in comparison to those stored aerobically. Low tissue pH creates unfavourable environment which negatively influences …

Development Of Dynamic Testing Machine For Laboratory Modeling Of The Rock Fracturing Phenomenon, Mohammad Ali Moghaddass Zadeh Kermani Dec 1984

Development Of Dynamic Testing Machine For Laboratory Modeling Of The Rock Fracturing Phenomenon, Mohammad Ali Moghaddass Zadeh Kermani

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a dynamic testing machine for laboratory modeling of the rock fracturing phenomenon. Bearing stratum fracturing is a construction difficulty which occurs when end-bearing piles are driven to weak rock or weathered sound rock. It is a pile group effect and can result in significantly less pile carrying capacity than the final driving resistance would normally indicate.

A linear scaling factor was derived to establish similitude between the laboratory apparatus and field conditions. This scaling factor is approximate and was used for overall sizing of the apparatus and its components. A more exact …

A Study Of The Relationship Of Sheffield & Igt Methods For Determining Paper Smoothness And Their Ability To Predict Gravure Printability, Austin Sung Nov 1984

A Study Of The Relationship Of Sheffield & Igt Methods For Determining Paper Smoothness And Their Ability To Predict Gravure Printability, Austin Sung

Theses

A variety of methods have been devised for the measurement of the smoothness of paper. These are reviewed and summarized in this work. Of the available methods, two of the most widely used have been selected for study. The air-leak method exemplified by the Sheffield instrument, and the nip-spreading method of the IGT printability tester are specifically presented and performed. The data obtained in empirical experiments are statistically analyzed and plotted, so as to determine if there is a functional relationship between the responses of these two methods. A linear relationship between the two is shown to be an appropriate …

Non-Linear Principal Component Analysis (Approximation By A Second-Order Taylor Series), John Viggiano Nov 1984

Non-Linear Principal Component Analysis (Approximation By A Second-Order Taylor Series), John Viggiano

Theses

Linear Principal Component Analysis (LPCA) has been applied in multivariate analysis because of its many optimality properties. However, when applied to locate singularities in a set of data, LPCA is only able to locate linear singularities. If the problem being considered tends to produce variables with non-linear relationships, such as with non-linear regression, LPCA is necessarily of limited utility in identifying singularities. Non-linear generalizations of PCA have been suggested in the literature. Essentially, these involve augmenting the data with higher-order terms, in particular square and cross product terms, and running a LPCA on the augmented data set. The problem with …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Imide-Sulfonamides), Eric J. Kuckhoff Nov 1984

Synthesis And Characterization Of Poly(Imide-Sulfonamides), Eric J. Kuckhoff

Theses

The objective of this research project was to synthesize and characterize eight novel copoly(imide-sulfonamides) 1, 2, where R was 4,4'-oxydianiline, 4,4' -methylene dianiline, 4,4'-diamino diphenyl sulfone, and 1,12 diaminododecane, respectively. After synthesis, these eight polymers were characterized by dilute solution viscosity, infrared spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry. Prepared polamic acids of copoly(imide-sulfonamides) were cast on glass plates and thermally cured to give films which would be evaluated for reverse osmosis and hyperfiltration. *Please refer to full-text for relevant diagram

Stress In The Alveolar Bone Surrounding A Dental Implant, Jagmohan Singh Kohli Oct 1984

Stress In The Alveolar Bone Surrounding A Dental Implant, Jagmohan Singh Kohli

Theses

The purpose of this study is to find the stresses developed in mandibular bone due to the occlusal loading of oral endosseous blade implants. Previous work done in this area was based on the theory of "Beam on Elastic Foundation". As the width/length ratio employed is approximately 0.65, the theory of "Plate on Elastic Foundation" used in this thesis is more appropriate. The mandibular bone acts as the foundation supporting the endosseous implants.

The analysis is complicated by the fact that the implants are irregular plates of varying thickness, the foundation modulus is a variable and the occlusal loading is …

An Airborne Thermal Remote Sensing Calibration Technique, I. D. Macleod Oct 1984

An Airborne Thermal Remote Sensing Calibration Technique, I. D. Macleod

Theses

A calibration technique for airborne thermal remote sensing systems without the requirement for ground truth or multiple altitude measure ments is developed and evaluated. This technique is based on vertical and offset look angles and in effect corrects for image degradation due to atmospheric effects . The results were evaluated by comparison to a multiple altitude regression technique using previously generated imagery, and by statistical methods, including an error analysis. Assuming that the multiple altitude regression technique was exact, the error on apparent temperature produced by this angular technique was 0.32C.

An Experimental Investigation Of The Kinetics And Thermal Properties Of Poly(Ethylene) Terephthalate And Its Related Di-Acid Modified Copolymers, Satish Baliga Sep 1984

An Experimental Investigation Of The Kinetics And Thermal Properties Of Poly(Ethylene) Terephthalate And Its Related Di-Acid Modified Copolymers, Satish Baliga

Theses

Poly(ethylene) Terephthalate , PET, is synthesized from purified Bis-hydroxyethyl Terephthalate,(BHET), in the presence of antimony oxide catalyst. Rate constant for the polycondensation reaction, based on a second order kinetic model is found to be 152.4/mol/hr.

A new modified polyester Polyethylene Adipic Terephthalate (PEAT) is synthesized from BHET and adipic acid. The effect of adipic acid content in the copolymer,on the rate of polycondensation is studied. Adipic acid is shown to improve the activity of the polymer chain ends thereby increasing the apparent reaction rate constants.

The modified polyesters are observed to melt at a lower temperature than PET. Moreover, the …

The Biodegradation Of Phenol And O-Chlorophenol Using Activated Sludge Bacteria, Jeffery Colish Sep 1984

The Biodegradation Of Phenol And O-Chlorophenol Using Activated Sludge Bacteria, Jeffery Colish

Theses

The biological degradation of phenol up to 500 ppm and 0-chlorophenol up to 40 ppm was studied in an aerated 4.0 liter hatch reactor using activated sludge bacteria from the Livingston, N.J. wastewater treatment plant. From the concentration versus time data, kinetic rate constants were determined for phenol (@ 100 ppm) and o-chlorophenol (@ 20 ppm and 40 ppm). Air stripping was determined to be an insignificant removal mechanism for the compounds studied.

It was noted that the acclimation times decreased with repeated exposure to a particular concentration of phenol or o-chlorophenol, and that the activated sludge bacteria first had …

Synthesis Of Trimethylpropane-Tolylene-2,4-Diisocyanate Adduct And Its Blocked Monomers, Farhad Forohar Sep 1984

Synthesis Of Trimethylpropane-Tolylene-2,4-Diisocyanate Adduct And Its Blocked Monomers, Farhad Forohar

Theses

A trimethylolpropane adduct of tolylene-2,4-diisocyanate (TMP-TDI) was prepared by reaction in a heterogeneous solvent system. The isocyanate functional groups of the TMP-TDI adduct were blocked with the following blocking agents: p-cresol, eugenol, o-chlorophenol, and one to one mole ratio of mixtures of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and each of the three preceding blocking agents. A sample of TMP-TDI adduct blocked with only HEMA was also prepared. The products were characterized by melting point, infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Monomers of TMP-TDI blocked with 50% HEMA and 50% blocking agents may be very useful as dental restorative materials.

Enhancement Of The Integrated Mechanisms Program (Imp) By Addition Of Graphic Output, Anil Parsaram Hingorani

Theses

The Integrated Mechanisms Program (IMP) is enhanced to include the capability of graphic output of simple mechanisms. The subroutines available in the graphics package GP-10 are used. The output consists of a drawing of the mechanism at its initial position and for every position for which the analysis is done. In addition, a graph of velocity and/or acceleration against the angle of the driving link may be plotted. There are limitations. The output of the mechanism represents only prismatic joints by a different symbol. It is represented by a rectangle and the symbol of the fixed link. All the other …

A Method For The Identification Of Parameters In Nonlinear Time-Varying Discrete Systems, Somo Coulibaly Sep 1984

A Method For The Identification Of Parameters In Nonlinear Time-Varying Discrete Systems, Somo Coulibaly

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to present a new technique for estimating the unknown parameters of nonlinear discrete time-varying systems.

The method is based on the model-reference control system where the model and the plant are controlled to exhibit the same output trajectory. The model is chosen to be linear and stationary. To develop the procedure of identification we assume that the structure of the nonlinear system is known and all the measurements are free of noise. A feedback input is adapted to improve the scheme. This scheme can be used to simultaneously identify the parameters when the control …

Computer Aided Design Of Optimum Structures, Sanjay M. Alexander Sep 1984

Computer Aided Design Of Optimum Structures, Sanjay M. Alexander

Theses

Techniques for the improvement of procedures for large scale structural synthesis are investigated. Considerable amount of research has been devoted to structural optimization. Yet as developments continue in this area, constant improvements in structural analysis methods, most of which are computationally demanding, tax the ability of existing optimization procedures to use the most powerful of the new analysis techniques effectively. This thesis presents optimization of structures modeled by classical discretized finite elements using the direct stiffness approach. The technioue presented here utilizes a Mathematical Programming (MP) method, which is based on Zoutendijk's feasible Direction Finding Problem (DFP). Modifications on Zoutendijk's …
