Computer Enhancement Of Real World Photographic Images Using Homomorphic And Linear Filtering, Nitin Sampat Oct 1985

Computer Enhancement Of Real World Photographic Images Using Homomorphic And Linear Filtering, Nitin Sampat

Theses

Digital Image Processing techniques have become increasingly popular in the last few years. Conventional silver halide photography continues to be used by the large amateur market, but not without "imperfect" images. There is almost always a need for enhancement or subsequent improvement after the photograph is made. This study dealt with computer image enhancement of such "imperfect" photographs using homomorphic (non-linear) and linear frequency-domain digital filtering (on a VAX-11/785) and a comparison in effectiveness was determined, using a subjective criteria for image quality. It was found that, in general, linear filtering is to be the preferred method of choice when …

A Study Of Mutispectral Temporal Scene Normalization Using Pseudo-Invariant Features, Applied To Landsat Tm Imagery, William Volchok Oct 1985

A Study Of Mutispectral Temporal Scene Normalization Using Pseudo-Invariant Features, Applied To Landsat Tm Imagery, William Volchok

Theses

A new technique for performing temporal image normalization using pseudo-invariant features was investigated. The technique was applied to the six reflected spectral band images of the Landsat TM sensors. The temporal normalization of pseudo-invariant features yielded linear normalizing functions for all bands. The errors in the normalization of pseudo-invariant features was determined to be on the order of three digital counts, which was estimated to be equivalent to reflectance errors on the order of one percent reflectance. Temporal normalization of all features in the Landsat scene shows great potential for both quantitative and qualitative temporal change detection.

Enhancement Of The Thermophysical Capability Of The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Joydeep Banerjee Sep 1985

Enhancement Of The Thermophysical Capability Of The Chemical Engineering Simulation System, Joydeep Banerjee

Theses

The CHESS (Chemical Engineering Emulation System) is a generalized steady-state, sequential-modular chemical process simulation program. In this thesis, the thermophysical data prediction capability of CHESS has been expanded by: incorporating more accurate thermodynamic phase-behavior models, by utilizing these models in generating a wider range of thermophysical properties, and providing an updated and expanded database for pure-component physical properties.

The overall performance of the simulation system's thermophysical package has been evaluated using the study of a subprocess consisting of various rotational equipment modules.

In this work, the Chao-Seader liquid phase activity coefficient model has been reinstalled in conjunction with the original …

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith Sep 1985

A Study Of Parameters Indicating Microbial Activity In Mixed Aerobic Cultures, William Smith

Theses

Mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS), oxygen uptake rate (OUR) and general dehydrogenase activity, as expressed by the reduction of the electron-acceptor Dye 3-(4',5'-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 4-diphenyltetra-zolium bromide (MTT), were compared for their ability to measure microbial activity in mixed aerobic cultures. A fourth parameter, specific enzyme activity, was dropped from consideration because of the difficulty of developing a satisfactory experimental technique. Measurement of the parameters was applied to the biodegradation of phenol and o-chlorophenol by activated sludge from a municipal sewage treatment plant, and by two commercially available bacterial preparations.

MLSS, although the most commonly used of the three parameters tested, is …

An Investigation Of The Application Of Utility Theory To Determine The Value Of Time: The Demand For Interactive Information Systems In Student Markets, Gordon S. Kalley

Theses

The economic rational of many contemporary businesses is the provision of services or labor saving equipment which their customers' pay for in order• to save themselves time. A major decision such an enterprise must make prior to entry into the market i=_ whether enough of a market exists to make its entry worthwhile. Such firms would be able to make better resource allocation decisions if they could have a quantitative measure of the relationship of their consumer's valuation of time vis a vi money. This study proposes such a measure.

Interactive information systems, whose viability depends to a large degree …

Further Development Of Preparation And Measurement Techniques For Triode-Sputtered Mercury Cadmium Telluride Thin Films, Tai-On Chan

Theses

The modified MRC 8800 R.F. triode sputtering system was used for mercury vapor sputtering (Hg1-xCdx)Te targets onto N-type (111) silicon substrates with a resistivity of 70 to 90 ohm-cm. Deposition rates were in the 2.6 to 3.6 A/sec range, A Hall mobility value, at 87°K, of 2550 Cm2/V•sec with a carrier concentration of 7(1015) cm-3 was obtained for 9 μm thick films with an X-value of 0.25. Obtaining good sputtered films reliably was dependent on having targets that would not crack when bombarded with mercury ions. Improvements in the methods used …

Conjugate Operators And Operator Spaces, Ronald Stephen Palko Sep 1985

Conjugate Operators And Operator Spaces, Ronald Stephen Palko

Theses

Everyone is familiar with the imaginary unit. Its square is minus one and it has a conjugate equal to the negative of itself. The imaginary unit is a conjugate operator. One can also simply define an operator whose square is plus one, with a distinct conjugate operation again returning the negative of itself. Thus one obtains a second conjugate operator. If the product of these two operators is taken, a third conjugate operator with distinct properties is obtained. These three conjugate operators together with the real number 1 form a "conjugate basis" for the spaces that will be developed here. …

Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh Sep 1985

Present Reliability Of Liquid Crystal Display Devices, C. N. Suresh

Theses

The purpose of this Thesis is to study the life of liquid crystal display devices as at present available in the market place. To accomplish this, accelerated tempera-ture conditions at 77°C and 85°C were used.

During the last few years, there has grown a tremendous interest in wide range temperature operating and fast LCDs. It is therefore important to understand how LCDs behave under these conditions.

The reliability of a liquid crystal display is usually measured in terms of a quantative degradation in electrical performance and a degradation in visual appearance. The degradation in visual appear6knce may manifest itself as …

A Survey Of The Literature On Moisture In Building Construction, Lawrence Charles Tiboldo Sep 1985

A Survey Of The Literature On Moisture In Building Construction, Lawrence Charles Tiboldo

Theses

The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the literature on moisture in buildings for its usefulness in the understanding of the theory involved in moisture transfer in buildings. Because analysis of the effects of moisture migration and development of condensation control strategies in structures depends on the knowledge of heat and moisture transfer theory as well as on the documented data on building material properties, evaluation of the usefulness of the reference material will serve as an indication of the availability of pertinent information.

To fulfill this objective, the literature listed as references to Chapter 21 of the 1985 …

Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang Sep 1985

Analysis Of Bolted Rock By Computer Modeling, Niann-Chyun Wang

Theses

A computer model-based on VAX-ANSYS system was developed to model the behavior of multi-layer rock systems reinforced by pretensioned rock bolts. Three models were utilized for this study. The third model represents the friction between interlayers occuring due to the tensioned rock-bolts. Results obtained from this study compare favorably with those obtained from equations developed from model studies. An attempt has been made to study the effects of creep on the behavior of the rock-layer system.

Spectrum Analysis And Real-Time Analysis Of Electroencephalograms, Suzanne Hesook Won Sep 1985

Spectrum Analysis And Real-Time Analysis Of Electroencephalograms, Suzanne Hesook Won

Theses

The analysis of the EEG background waveform is studied by two techniques, spectrum analysis and real-time analysis. The spectrum analysis is performed by using Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) on a segment of the signal. The resulting signal is classified into different band types such as delta, theta, alpha and beta, to see the power in each band, and the magnitude of the power on the left and right side if the brain is evaluated for asymmetry. The mean power frequency shows the frequency where the maxinum power exists in each band type. This type of analysis provides overall information of …

Theses

This paper on Robot Manipulators brings together theories from three fields : computer graphics, kinematic equations and microprocessor based control.

There are four chapters in this paper, chapter one is the conceptual development on homogeneous transformations, express the position and orientation of the transposition of an object in Cartisian coordinates. Chapter two develops the method of obtaining the Cartisian coordinate position and orientation of the end effector for a manipulator, give the joint coordinate as input and use the homogeneous transformation to express the position and orientation. Chapter 3 is a very difficult one; it solves the parameters for the …

Microbial Characteristics Of An Industrial Mixed Liquor After Exposure To Phenolic Compounds, Patricia L. Boyle Sep 1985

Microbial Characteristics Of An Industrial Mixed Liquor After Exposure To Phenolic Compounds, Patricia L. Boyle

Theses

The microbial characteristics of a mixed population from the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commissioners (PVSC) Wastewater Treatment Plant in Newark were examined. This plant handles about 250 million gallons per day of mixed sewerage, with a large industrial component. The microbial species were characterized using standard plating techniques, morphology, microscopic observation, and biochemical tests. These characteristics were determined for the fresh liquor, and after successive batch exposure to phenol (100 ppm) and 2-chlorophenol (20 ppm). Predator/prey, gram positive to gram negative bacteria ratios, and the fungi and protozoan populations were also determined. These results were compared with those previously obtained using …

Model Experiment Of Rock Fracturing Caused By Driving Piles, Dai-Heyng Lee Sep 1985

Model Experiment Of Rock Fracturing Caused By Driving Piles, Dai-Heyng Lee

Theses

The geotechical construction problem of rock fracturing caused by pile driving is investigated using a laboratory model. One inch diameter closed bottom steel pipes were driven into a simulated rock mass consisting of masonry bricks having an average compressive strength 3,200 psi. Both single pile and five pile model groups were tested. The single pile tests indicated that a threshold of penetration behavior occurred at a theorical hammer energy of 100 ft-lb and this was used for the group tests. Penetration rates were measured using an optical level.

Piles in the five pile model group were initially driven to a …

Laminar Flow Through A Porous Annulus With Surface Suction, Stelios C. Nicolaides Sep 1985

Laminar Flow Through A Porous Annulus With Surface Suction, Stelios C. Nicolaides

Theses

A theoretical investigation was conducted to obtain the velocity, pressure and shear stress distributions for incompressible, steady, fully developed, laminar flow through an annulus, with a uniformly porous inside tube wall. Suction at the walls is a result of the pressure difference across the porous wall.

The continuity equation, momentum equation and the Darcy's law for suction velocity are analysed with an integral method. The resulting differential equations were solved using a numerical technique.

For the same radii ratio, dimensionless inlet pressures on both sides of the porous wall and dimensionless porous resistance, the dimensionless length required to reach zero …

Information Retrieval In The Office For Effective Communication, Herbert Josef Schwoerer Sep 1985

Information Retrieval In The Office For Effective Communication, Herbert Josef Schwoerer

Theses

The office worker of tomorrow, who is very likely to be an 'information-worker', will be heavily involved with communication of any kind. Effective communication, however, can only be guaranteed if the user is in control of information overload.

OIRS, the Office Information Retrieval System, designed and developed as a Master Thesis, is an approach to support the office worker in storing, maintaining, and retrieving textual information. By providing the user with a tool to impose a self-defined and self-maintained structure upon information or references to it, information overload, which is caused by lack of information about information, can be decreased. …

Frequency Characterization Of A Thin Linear Antenna Using Diakoptic Theory, Howard Harold Smith Sep 1985

Frequency Characterization Of A Thin Linear Antenna Using Diakoptic Theory, Howard Harold Smith

Theses

A frequency dependent analytical expression for the input impedance of a thin wire antenna is obtained using diakoptic theory. In diakoptic theory the linear antenna is seperated into electrically short segments where each segment is treated as a two-port network. This approach eliminates the need for an integral equation formulation. An impedance matrix is found which characterizes coupling between all segments. By expanding the free space Green's function in a power series in wavenumber k each entry in the resultant impedance matrix is obtained as a function of frequency. Enforcement of the continuity of currents and equality of scalar potentials …

Identification Of Linear System With Feedback Input, Jyh Yang Sep 1985

Identification Of Linear System With Feedback Input, Jyh Yang

Theses

A new procedure with feedback input is presented for identification of continuous-time systems. Using Lyapunov's direct method to prove it asymptotic stability. For the procedure to be applicable, it's assumed that all the state variables of the plant are accessible and that there is no measurement noise so the model reference scheme can be used to identify the parameters of the plant.

The procedure results in the convergence of every parameter of a model to the corresponding one of the system as the time approaching to infinite i.e. t→∞. Digital computer simulations are provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the …

Semi-Empirical Molecular Orbital Calculations Of The Ground And Excited State Potential Surfaces For Photodissociation Of Pararosaniline Leucocyanide Incorporating Solvent Stabilization, John Westbrook Aug 1985

Semi-Empirical Molecular Orbital Calculations Of The Ground And Excited State Potential Surfaces For Photodissociation Of Pararosaniline Leucocyanide Incorporating Solvent Stabilization, John Westbrook

Theses

The excited state and ground state potential surfaces are calculated for the photoionization of Pararosaniline leucocyanide using MNDO-SCF and INDO-SCF-CI molecular orbital methods. These potential surfaces are corrected for influence of polar media using Onsager reaction field theory and incorporating dipole-dipole interaction. These calculations support a mechanism of photochromism in which photodissociation occurs from the first singlet excited state.

Characterization Of G.C.A. Wafertrac 9000 Using Kodak Micro Positive 820 Resist And Developer Zx-934, Janet Chapin Mcfarland

Theses

A static coating program and a spray/static development program were developed, for use on the Wafertrac 9000 using Kodak Micro Positive 820 resist and developer ZX-934 in order to minimize critical dimension shift and maximize process latitude. By maximizing process latitude, a greater tolerance for process and equipment errors can be achieved. Using the established process, 1.2µm resist lines were produced and critical dimension shift was minimized providing a process with wide process latitude for creating photoresist geometries with dimensions larger than 1.2µm.
