Role Definition And Procedures And Evaluating The High School Librarian, Lenore M. Glore

Theses

In 1984 the Missouri Committee for Performance Based Evaluation together with the Missouri Association of School Librarians developed criteria for evaluating the school librarian. The model consists of 20 criteria with descriptors that are appropriate to the responsibilities of the librarian. It was recommended by the committee that all school districts in Missouri adopt or adapt this method for evaluating the librarians in their schools. The purpose of this study was to determine how many school districts in St. Louis County evaluate librarians according to the Missouri Performance Based Evaluation for Librarians, and if not by this method, what methods …

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo Apr 1987

A Finite Element Solution Of Thermal Wave Propagation In Elastic Media, Dominic N. Dalo

Theses

The rational theory of thermodynamics is used to develop equations governing the propagation of thermal waves. A new vector quantity is introduced to account for the thermal waves. The phenomenon of thermal wave propagation is illustrated by considering the problem of one-dimensional heat conduction in a finite slab subjected to a heat flux pulse. The solution is obtained via the finite element method. A discussion of the results and their significance is also presented.

Stylistic Analysis And Recognition Of Piano Sonatas Of Four Composers -- Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Anton Webern, Emily Feng-Hwa Lin-Jeng

Theses

This thesis describes a system that incorporates techniques developed by musicologists to do stylistic analysis of music, an important applied field in music theory analysis. To do the analysis requires the knowledge of many musicological analysis methods and pattern recognition algorithms that are central issues to this project. In addition, AI techniques of learning were used to improve the whole system's skills. The conclusions reached as a result of this project were that computers can perform musical tasks usually associated exclusively with naturally intelligent musicologists, and that learning techniques can expand and enrich the behavior of musically intelligent systems.

Partitioning And Protecting Control Program Function Through Virtual Storage, Thomas J. Murray Mar 1987

Partitioning And Protecting Control Program Function Through Virtual Storage, Thomas J. Murray

Theses

Many operating systems are endowed with the ability to access every byte of addressable memory in the processor complex. Unfortunately, a control program so designed creates an exposure of the following nature: It is possible for an errant section of operating system code to unwittingly modify (and perhaps destroy) either its own storage or the storage of others. This thesis addresses this problem and discusses the design and implementation of a control program in which many such attempts at destroying storage are detected and suppressed. This is accomplished by placing separate control program functions in separate virtual storages. The thesis …

An Expert System To Optimize Combinational Logic, Gu-Ching Lin

Theses

Twenty to fifty percent of the active area of most semicustom integrated circuits is devoted to combinational logic. Automating the synthesis and optimization of combinational circuitry can result in significant improvements in both the design cycle time and the overall area of the implementation. This thesis presents a rule-based system that optimizes combinational logic for a given technology. By performing Boolean function minimization, decomposition, logic synthesis and a series of local transformations4, the system achieves area reductions and saves valuable design time.

The Effect Of S-Donor Ligands On The Sensation Of Silver Bromide Crystals With Iridium (Iii), Juan A. Zuleta Feb 1987

The Effect Of S-Donor Ligands On The Sensation Of Silver Bromide Crystals With Iridium (Iii), Juan A. Zuleta

Theses

Different concentrations of potassium thiocyanate (SCN) were used in combination with Iridium (III) hexachloride (Ir) to surface sensitize an octahedral silver bromide emulsion. Surface sensitivity increased by 0.90 log H over the unsensitized emulsion when Ir and SCN were added during sensitization compared to 0.45 log H when the iridium salt was used alone. A decrease of 2.40 log H was observed when an Ir-SCN complex was formed and then added to the emulsion. An increase of 1.05 log H was obtained if gold, thiocyanate and iridium were used. Similar results were obtained using tetramethylthiourea (TMT) or thiodiglycol (TG) instead …

A Study To Determine The Amount Of Fountain Solution On A Lithographic Plate, Robert G. Beaverson Feb 1987

A Study To Determine The Amount Of Fountain Solution On A Lithographic Plate, Robert G. Beaverson

Theses

Even though lithography has been in use for several hundred years, the process has many mysteries which science has been unable to answer. One of these mysteries is the physical measurement of the amount of lithographic fountain solution wetting a lithographic plate. In the past, subjective means were used to determine the relative amount of fountain solution on a lithographic plate. This thesis deals with a proposed method of determining the amount of lithographic fountain solution applied to a lithographic plate surface, both image and non-image areas. The method utilizes the I.G.T. Printability Tester by spreading a predetermined amount of …

Steady-State Operation Of Bench-Scale Activated Sludge Process Using Phenol And 2-Chlorophenol As Substrates, Jeffrey Richard Caputi

Theses

Experiments were conducted to determine whether a continuous process similar to the common activated sludge process could be operated at a relative steady state with phenol and 2-chlorophenol as the sole carbon sources. After a number of unsuccessful trials, process conditions were developed which allowed for operation at a relative steady state with respect to the concentration of microorganisms in the reactor and the concentration of phenol and 2-chlorophenol in the effluent.

Phenol and 2-chlorophenol were removed at better than 99 percent efficiency on a continuous basis. The mixed liquor grown under the conditions of the experiment was highly filamentous …

The Effect Of Inorganic Salts On Adsorption Of Organics By Fly Ash, Pai-Yuan Horng Jan 1987

The Effect Of Inorganic Salts On Adsorption Of Organics By Fly Ash, Pai-Yuan Horng

Theses

Optimum amounts of inorganic salts ( monovalent, divalent, and trivalent chlorides ) added to various bituminous coal fly ashes in batch adsorption treatment experiments indicates the possibility of improving adsorption capacity.

Experiments were conducted on aqueous solutions of three priority pollutants : phenol, toluene, benzene. Both high fusion and low fusion fly ashes were used as sorbent materials. Removal of organic pollutants was measured using a total organic carbon analyzer.

Isotherm tests positively indicate that the addition of inorganic salts to fly ash significantly increases adsorption capacity. The study shows that removal of organic pollutants by fly ash depends on …

The Kinetics And Mechanism Studies Of Cathodic Electro-Initiated Crosslinking Polymerization Of Unsaturated Polyester Prepolymer, Joseph Yuan-Ji Sheng Jan 1987

The Kinetics And Mechanism Studies Of Cathodic Electro-Initiated Crosslinking Polymerization Of Unsaturated Polyester Prepolymer, Joseph Yuan-Ji Sheng

Theses

The cathodic electro-initiated polymerization reaction of the unsaturated polyester prepolymer has been found to have the characteristics of the first order ionic initiation polymerization mechanism. The rate of polymer formation is directly proportional to the current intensity and voltage supplied, but inversely proportional to the reaction temperature. The rate of initiation can be expressed as a function of the initial concentration of the prepolymer, residence time and reaction temperature. The rate expression of the initiation step has been derived based upon the experimental data collected as follows:

ln W = k0 exp[-Ea/RT] Ca0 ln t + ln b

where k0 …

Analysis And Evaluation Of The "Pay For Savings" Concept : The Residential Energy Conservation Action Program (Recap), Glenn Owen Steiger Jan 1987

Analysis And Evaluation Of The "Pay For Savings" Concept : The Residential Energy Conservation Action Program (Recap), Glenn Owen Steiger

Theses

Recently, electric utilities have developed and implemented many methods to induce their customers to reduce consumption of electricity. One of the most unique concepts was developed by the General Public Utilities Corporation. Simply, it is the "Pay for Savings" concept which pays energy conservation contractors for actual (measured) energy saved, and not for the retrofit measures used to accomplish the savings. GPU has developed a program, Residential Energy Conservation Action Program, as a vehicle for this concept.

This thesis has attempted to describe the methodology used in implementing RECAP. More importantly, it has analyzed actual results of the program and …

Reflections On Solid Modeling In Cad/Cam System, Yuh-Hwa Chyr

Theses

In this thesis, we will first study the mathematical fundamental for geometric modeling. It includes modeling space, representation scheme, and various characteristics for solid modeling. Then we discuss how a solid modeling system is integrated into an overall CAD/CAm system. What functions it performs, and what fuctions must be performed with other parts of the CAD/CAM systems. And how data can be transfered between solid modeling system and other CAD/CAM system.

Solid modeling has created a new era in CAD/CAM. A solid model is an unambiguous, three-dimensional, geometric representation of a design. The more design information a model can represent, …

Mathematical Modelling Of The Simultaneous Diffusion Of Egta And Caegta And Ca2+ In A Two-Compartment System Representing Skinned Smooth Muscle, Roderick Jon Hausser Jan 1987

Mathematical Modelling Of The Simultaneous Diffusion Of Egta And Caegta And Ca2+ In A Two-Compartment System Representing Skinned Smooth Muscle, Roderick Jon Hausser

Theses

Smooth muscle strips "chemically skinned" with Triton X-100 represent a two-compartment system consisting of the extracellular space (ECS) and the cytosolic space (CS) bounded by the permeabilized plasma membrane. Free [Ca2+] in such systems must be controlled with sufficiently high concentrations of Ca-buffers (EGTA). The presence of Ca-buffers, however, will oppose and delay any changes in [Ca2+] in both compartments. We have developed a model describing the simultaneous diffusion of Ca 2+ , EGTA and CaEGTA between bath and ECS, and ECS and CS and the chemical reaction between ligand and metal species in each compartment. …
