This paper reports the results of an investigation into the discernibility of seven typefaces when overlayed by 15 different gauges brought into contact with each type face. Discernibility was tested under two conditions; standard (original typeset words) and electrophotostatically copied (second generation copies of the original typeset words) . The question that this investigation was attempting to answer was whether or not certain typefaces are more discernible after electrophotostatic copying than other typefaces. Characterization Of Ion Implanted Antimony, Michael J. Cumbo

Ion implanted antimony (121Sb) is characterized as an n-type dopant in single crystal (100) oriented silicon. The required implantation equipment and critical parameters are discussed. The experimental procedures used in this study are presented along with the resulting data on dopant distribution and crystal damage annealing. The tradeoffs between antimony and arsenic, the more commonly used heavy n-type dopant, are examined from both a process end a device perspective. The context of this comparison is in applications that require a heavily doped layer beneath a thin deposit of epitaxial silicon. Results of a specific buried layer process characterization are included.

For the last fifty years , library binders have employed a standard endpaper construction for all of its bindings. Now, because of new binding techniques and the deterioration of paper some preservationists have placed a demand on library binders to develop an alternate endpaper construction. Members of the graphic arts industries are slowly becoming aware of undercolor reduction techniques used in the attempt to help stabilize high speed wet printing. Undercolor removal is a color correction method which follows this line of thought as it reduces the amount of ink coverage by the process-color inks and increases ink coverage of the black printer in the darker neutral areas of a reproduction. The advantages realized by this technique are carried even further with gray-component replacement (GCR) . Driography is a planographic printing process. A driographic printing plate differs from a conventional offset lithographic plate in that water is not required to keep the non-image area clean of ink during printing. Water, or fountain solution, is not required during printing because a silicone rubber coating which repels ink is used for the non-image area of a driographic plate. The first driographic plate was introduced in the early 1970's by the 3M Company. The plate was a positive working printing plate and has since been discontinued. At the Rochester Institute of Technology, a freshmen laboratory project, utilizing a NOR logic array and the existing PMOS process, has been successfully incorporated into the microelectronic engineering curriculum. This paper outlines the structure of this new course. Students are introduced to digital logic and I.C. fabrication by designing a simple digital circuit and realizing it in the gate array. Completion of the circuit is accomplished by making a mask and photolithographically defining the metal layer. The circuits are then tested for functionality.

Due to the recent advent of diode arrays and their subsequent use in radiometers, there has been some discussion about the accuracy of using diode array radiometry in the measurement of pulsed and flash sources. In order to determine whether or not diode array radiometers are accurate instruments for measuring these sources, a Tracor Northern TN-1710 radiometer, which uses a diode array, and a conventional, single channel Optronic 730A radiometer were used to measure three sources. "Mosaic In Paper" is a synthesis of lithographs, photo etchings, and woodcuts designed on the Macintosh Plus computer then transferred to these processes through Xerox copies or laser print-offs. The concept of the piece stems from the Byzantine mosaics and Gothic rose windows I saw in Europe while living and studying in Italy four years ago, as well as a brief study of Oriental rugs while designing the work. The piece is intended to show harmony between the technology of today and the tradition of these ancient art mediums.

This paper explains and evaluates an indicator diagram generation system for a single cylinder, internal combustion, research engine. The apparatus is digital and consists of a piezo-electric pressure transducer with charge amplifier, a shaft encoder, a digital oscilloscope, and a computer with printer. Motoring data provides valuable information on the performance of the system which is used in the computer software to produce results accurate to 5.4 percent. The thermal degradation of blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone , poly ( 1 , 4-butylene adipate), poly(l,4-cyclohexane-dimethylene succinate), poly( 2 , 2-dimethyl-l , 3-propylene succinate), and poly( hexamethylene sebacate) has been studied using thermogravimetric analysis, direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy. For each blend, the polyester componenent was less thermally stable in the blend compared to the pure state. The thermal stability of the phenoxy was not affected by the presence of the polyesters in the blends. Blends of phenoxy with polycaprolactone and with poly ( 1 , 4-butylene adipate) degrade in two-step mechanisms where the amount of weight loss …

An automated segmentation algorithm for the isolation of pseudoinvariant features was developed. This algorithm utilizes rate-of-change information from the thresholding process previously associated with the pseudoinvariant feature normalization technique. This algorithm was combined with the normalization technique and applied to the six reflective bands of the Landsat Thematic Mapper for both urban and rural imagery. The segmentation algorithm and normalization technique were also applied to color infrared high resolution U2 imagery. The accuracy and precision of the normalization results were evaluated. A New Imaging Material Utilizing Exposure Induced Free Radical Reduction Of Stabilized Soluble Metal Salts, Patrick Friedman

A new non-silver halide imaging material is proposed. The light sensitive element within the material generates free radicals upon exposure, through a fragmentation process. The free radicals, which can be generated imagewise, are then used as a catalyst to promote the reduction of an image forming element. The image forming element is a stabilized, soluble, metal salt which is chelated rendering it unaccessible for reduction by the atmosphere. The film matrix is virtually grain-free as is the final image, with some dependence on the binder and amplification process employed.

Psyxpert is an expert computer system designed to aid psychiatrists in the diagnosis of mental disorders when psychotic features are the prominent part of the presenting clinical picture. The knowledge base contains psychiatric knowledge in the form of production rules. The system uses a backward-chaining control strategy to guide the consultation. Psyxpert provides a menu-driven user interface and an explanation subsystem. The system uses certainty and importance measures to produce a diagnosis with an attached certainty factor and recommendations for further evaluation or therapy. A concept was developed and a computer program was designed and implemented to model the eye, the brain, and the perception system. These models were used to study edge transformation through the human visual system. The eye model was developed using optical spread and neural sampling data along with different inhibition distributions. The effects of lateral inhibition on retinal edge response were studied and hypothetical brain transfer functions were calculated. The results of this study indicate that no single mechanism or linear model can explain both the sinewave response and edge perception for the human visual system. The eye and …

With advances in computer storage and electronic dot generation scanners a new color separation process has become possible. Although in theory the Gray Component Replacement (GCR) process has been possible since the early twenties, it has only recently been available through contemporary color separation methods. GCR is the process by which the gray component of a particular color reproduction is removed from the reproduction and replaced with black ink.
