A Study Of Color Image Quality With Respect To Screen Angle Arrangement In Multicolor Halftone Printing, Ted (Te-Chung) Chen
A Study Of Color Image Quality With Respect To Screen Angle Arrangement In Multicolor Halftone Printing, Ted (Te-Chung) Chen
Theses
The advantage of using a single screen-angle (Dot-on-Dot) reproduction for multicolor halftone printing is a sharper reproduction with the decrease, of. a rosette pattern in all image areas. The purpose of this study was to quantify the differences of color image quality between conventional reproduction using four screen-angles and a single screen-angle printing technique. In addition, the influence of screen frequency to the final color image quality in the Dot-on-Dot printing was also investigated. The results of this study confirmed that there is a linearity of image quality for all color halftone printing regardless of the arrangement of the screen …

Awakening The Spirit, Jane Emily Dalton
Awakening The Spirit, Jane Emily Dalton
Theses
I have chosen to create a series of woven rugs and handwoven panels which reflect a personal vision. I choose to think metaphysically about the world I live in and about the objects that surround me. Life represents a spiritual journey in which each of us is involved. The Bible says that, "Many are called, but few are chosen." However, I tend to agree more with the following statement: "We all are called and we are all chosen if we simply have the courage to step into the unknown." Many things could cause a person to begin an internal evaluation …

Effects Of Chromatic Surrounds On The Perceived Color Balance Of Reflection Prints, David R. Odgers
Effects Of Chromatic Surrounds On The Perceived Color Balance Of Reflection Prints, David R. Odgers
Theses
Many have pursued an understanding of factors that affect color perception. One such factor is the viewing condition under which an observation occurs. For example, the appearance of a color patch is altered by the color and luminance of the area surrounding it. Even if this perception is subconscious, it still influences the viewer's judgments. Thus, one expects that the perception of a complex scene, a photograph, will also be changed by a colored surround. This paper investigates such an effect, thereby increasing the understanding of color perception.
Computer Aided Instruction And A Graphical Authoring System, Catherine Lofgren Goodykoontz
Computer Aided Instruction And A Graphical Authoring System, Catherine Lofgren Goodykoontz
Theses
In the early 1960's, the computer was first used as a means of delivering instruction to college students. Today, the computer as an educational tool has been integrated into curricula from preschool to the university. This thesis focuses upon the specification and implementation of a Graphical Authoring System which is used to create, deliver and administrate instruction of a pictorial nature (combining graphics and text). The system explores a question format different from the traditional formats of multiple choice, true-false, and fill-in-the-blank which are available in current authoring systems. The question format to be explored allows the student to identify …
An Algorithmic Approach For Multi-Color Ramsey Graphs, Wei Li
An Algorithmic Approach For Multi-Color Ramsey Graphs, Wei Li
Theses
The classical Ramsey number R(r1,r2,...,rm) is defined to be the smallest integer n such that no matter how the edges of Kn are colored with the m colors, 1, 2, 3, . . . ,m, there exists some color i such that there is a complete subgraph of size ri, all of whose edges are of color i. The problem of determining Ramsey numbers is known to be very difficult and is usually split into two problems, finding upper and lower bounds. Lower bounds can be obtained by the construction of a, so called, Ramsey graph. There are many different …

Evaluation Of Some Multivariate Cusum Schemes, Susan L. Spindler
Theses
This paper will review and compare five multivariate CUSUM techniques. Two of these are proposed by Crosier (1986), the multivariate CUSUM and the CUSUM of T (COT). It will also compare two proposed by Pignatiello (1986), the multivariate CUSUM #1 (MCl) and the multivariate CUSUM #2 (MC2). The fifth method which will be compared is the multivariate Shewhart method. A discussion of the method of computation and a comparison of results of all the above methods using the same data set will be included. Additionally, a short commentary on the cusum method by Woodall and Ncube is enclosed. Graphical interpretation …
Interactive Virtual Debugger For Gpss/H, Eugene Johnson
Interactive Virtual Debugger For Gpss/H, Eugene Johnson
Theses
GPSS (General Purpose System Simulator) is a language, designed to aid the computer modeling and simulation of a wide variety of different real life systems. As with any other large programming project, debugging GPSS programs is unavoidable and often difficult. The present thesis describes an Interactive Visual Debugging System for GPSS/H which attempts to simplify the debugging task by allowing the programmer to observe the actual behavior of the model in simulated real time, while preserving all traditional interactive debugging tools - breakpoints, system traps, selective displays, etc. The present version of the Interactive Visual Debugger is developed for the …
The Optical Spread Functions And Noise Characteristics Of Selected Paper Substrates Measured In Typical Reflection Optical System Configurations, Janet L. Kofender
The Optical Spread Functions And Noise Characteristics Of Selected Paper Substrates Measured In Typical Reflection Optical System Configurations, Janet L. Kofender
Theses
Research into the signal and noise characteristics that ultimately determine the performance quality of an imaging system has done little to isolate the contribution of the final image carrying substrate. A study is presented that experimentally analyzes some optical characteristics of six paper substrates representative of those used in lithography, xerography and photography. The optical characteristics studied can have a direct impact on image quality and are a result of the paper structure and its light scattering properties. Reflection microdensitometer techniques are used to provide representations of optical spread functions and an analysis of paper noise which is quantified as …

A Functional Reading Curriculum For Severely Handicapped Students, Marie Sassenrath
Theses
In Missouri, the State School System serves the majority of severely handicapped students aged five to twenty-one and strives to facilitate their integration into community environments. The State Schools' most recent curriculum was developed in 1975. This guide cannot adequately prepare handicapped students for survival in a least restrictive environment because much of the guide's content is nonfunctional and taught in objectives simulated (classroom) settings . Its are not stated behaviorally, nor do they provide criterion levels new type of curriculum for is evaluation; needed. A clearly, a functional reading curriculum would equip the severely handicapped student with some degree …
A Survey Of Teachers' Perceptions Concerning The Single Parent Child, Margaret E. Huebner
A Survey Of Teachers' Perceptions Concerning The Single Parent Child, Margaret E. Huebner
Theses
This impact of parental divorce on childrens' adjustment has become the concern of many educators. Family life and childhood socialization has been continually redefined due to this marital disruption phenomenon. Since the structure of the contemporary American· family, composed of mother, father, and children has changed, educators need to be aware of the special needs and adjustments necessary for the children.
The purpose of this study was to determine by a survey if children from single parent homes were perceived in a more negative way, by their teachers, than children from intact homes. If children from single parent homes were …

Ipl: Interfaced Prolog/Lisp, Steven J. Recard
Theses
This thesis report describes the design and implementation of an interface between the two most common artificial intelligence languages, Lisp and Prolog. The interface is accomplished by small extensions to each language, and provides Prolog programs with the capability of invoking Lisp functions. The interface is simple yet powerful; it the supports passing of arbitrarily complex data objects, regardless of data type. The particular language implementations extended were C-Prolog [Pereira,85] and XLISP [Betz,86], both interpreters running under the Unix operating system.
An Exploration Of Conscious And Instinctive Concepts Within Ceramic Sculpture, Pamela Jayne Fayer
An Exploration Of Conscious And Instinctive Concepts Within Ceramic Sculpture, Pamela Jayne Fayer
Theses
This thesis report describes the driving force behind my ceramic sculpture, a pursuit of form reflecting conscious and instinctive concepts in art. Each piece, a created situation removed somewhat from the context of the visual and expected, calls attention to the processes by which the human species functions. The environments created program a controlled ituation that evokes viewer response as they add to and heighten the illusions of real situations. The drama of these sculptural realities is further intensified by being life-sized. An intention of the work is not to function as the object it visually represents, but to explore …

Automatic Differentiation: Implementation In The Ada Programming Language, Robert P. Herloski
Automatic Differentiation: Implementation In The Ada Programming Language, Robert P. Herloski
Theses
This thesis describes the characteristics of a novel computational technique called automatic differentiation, and gives an implementation of this technique in the Ada® programming language. Automatic differentiation is a technique with which one can directly calculate the value of any partial derivative of nearly any function that has been programmed into a computer (at any point of interest), without requiring the algebraic derivation of the desired partial derivative of the function of interest. It is closely related to the technique of power series manipulation, with which one can find, for example, the sum, product, square root, etc., of given power …

Create A New Town And A New You To Improve Writing Skills, Barbara Broadfoot
Theses
Writing has always been one of the corners tones of American education . Schools are concerned with the development of students, and writing contributes to the development of the whole person. The public is alarmed because many students graduate from high school without being able to write well enough to function in today's complicated society.
There a re many reasons why schools fail to do a good job in the teaching of writing. One of the main reasons is the schools' over-emphasis on the teaching of grammar. Many teachers are not trained as teachers of writing and rely on the …

The Prediction Of Edge Raggedness Via A Single-Channel Filter Model Of The Visual System, Michael G. Mannix
The Prediction Of Edge Raggedness Via A Single-Channel Filter Model Of The Visual System, Michael G. Mannix
Theses
Edge raggedness is a psychophysical term which refers to the fidelity of a high-contrast edge, which has been degraded by some process, compared to an ideal edge. It has been suggested that the processing of high-contrast edges shares the same spatial-frequency processing mechanisms with that of sinewave gratings. This study uses first-order psychophysical principles, determined using sinewave grating stimuli, in a model to process edges in order to derive a quantitative metric proportional to perceived edge raggedness. The derived metric is the rms power of the processed edge power spectrum. First, the need for a two-dimensional analysis is established, then …
Personal Vessels, Keith Cullen
Personal Vessels, Keith Cullen
Theses
Ideas relating to ritual and ceremony have interested me for some time, and the visual possibilities of things archaeological, and their potential for the expression of ritual ideas seemed to be the best combination to express how I felt about precious objects, containment and the vessel. I summarized these thoughts in my thesis proposal: I intend to create a group of objects that relate closed vessel forms to archaeological or ritual characteristics. I will use glass and, when appropriate, other media. This report will define and explain my point of view on each of the issues in the proposal, illustrate …
