Testing Of Ultrasonic Bonding In Microcircuits, Ioannis Andrea Phiniotis
Testing Of Ultrasonic Bonding In Microcircuits, Ioannis Andrea Phiniotis
Theses
A model for the ultrasonic bond as used in making microcircuit interconnections was studied. This model was based on Bowden & Tabor's dry friction theory and Mindlin's analysis of Hertz's model for elastic deformation under compressive and shear stresses. To develop a well-controlled bonding system, the critical bonding machine parameters were determined, and a high-frequency capacitor microphone was fitted to the bonding machine to monitor the tool tip oscillation. Application of these techniques made it possible to control the parameters of the machine to ±5%. Flip-chip bond studies were made using this machine. The data obtained were consistent with the …

A Mathematical Analysis Of An Electronic Dot Generating Scanner For Dot Resolution And Tone Reproduction, Frederick K. Waechter
Theses
An electronic dot generating scanner is a complex machine. This complexity is based in the photographic methods which the scanner is designed to duplicate. This study addresses the mathematical principles of the entire scanner system. This paper was intended to provide an improved understanding of the scanner system. The hypothesis states that a mathematical analysis with experimental verification can be developed to accurately model the internal optics, tone reproduction, and output dot characteristics of an electronic dot generating scanner. The analysis begins with a functional block diagram, which shows the information flow through the scanner. This diagram breaks the process …

Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing Poly(Vinyl Chloride), David W. Lee
Thermal Degradation Of Polymer Blends Containing Poly(Vinyl Chloride), David W. Lee
Theses
The thermal degradation of blends of poly(vinyl chloride) ( PVC ) with poly(vinyl acetate) (PVA), and two ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers containing 70 weight percent vinyl-acetate (EVA70) and 45 weight percent vinyl acetate (EVA45) were studied by thermogravimetric analysis and direct-pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The PVC, PVA, EVA45 and EVA70 degrade in two-step processes for each polymer. The PVA/PVC , EVA45/PVC and the EVA70/PVC blends do show some inter action during the first step of the degradation process while the respective second steps are unaffected. The acid produced by the degradation of one polymer causes accelerated loss of the other acid in …

Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, Chirasakdi Varuntanya
Theses
In a detailed presentation of Boltyanskii "elementary" proof of the Pontryagin's Maximum Principle, several gaps have been filled in the original one: The control processes which are considered in this paper are described by a system of ordinary differential equations, hence the uniform approach to O of certain O(ε) is proved. Moreover, a complete proof of a theorem about convex cones in Rn and a theorem from Topology are presented. An example of time optimal control illustrating the principle is also solved.

Approaches To The Synthesis Of Dentin Bonding Agents Containing Vinyl And Carbamate Functional Groups, Steven W. Amato
Theses
The synthesis of four new monomers containing vinyl and carbamate functional groups was attempted. The desired products were N-m-methacryloxyphenyl-O-phenyl carbamate, N-p-methacryloxy-O-phenyl carbamate, m-N-phenylcarbamato-2-methacryloxyethoxy benzoate, and p-N-phenylcarbamato-2-methacryloxyethoxy benzoate. The carbamate functional group was derived by the Lewis Acid catalyzed reaction of meta-aminophenol, para-aminophenol, meta-aminobenzoic acid, and para-aminobenzoic acid with diphenyl carbonate. The vinyl function was derived, in the case of the aminophenols, by reaction with methacrylyl chloride, and in the case of the aminobenzoic acids, with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate.
Partial products only were prepared, these being the two carbamate functional phenols, the two carbamate functional benzoic acids, the two methacryloxy functional derivatives …

A simulation program for a simplified Petri net model of manufacturing workstation is described and the production throughput is computed.
Degradation Of Aniline And Nitrobenzene In A Photoreactor, Michael Joseph Sowa
Degradation Of Aniline And Nitrobenzene In A Photoreactor, Michael Joseph Sowa
Theses
Degradation of aniline and nitrobenzene in aqueuous solutions was studied. Five reaction processes were utilized, including ultraviolet light, ozone, O2/UV, O3/O2/UV, and H2O2/UV. A 30 liter semi-batch gas sparged reactor was used for the development of reaction rate and mass transfer parameters in these systems. The results were used to model a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) for the O3/O2/UV case. Reasonable agreement was obtained for steady state exit concentrations between the experimental data and those predicted from the model.

A Theoretical Investigation Of The Possibility Of Coexistence Of Three Microbial Populations Competing Purely And Simply In Configurations Of Three Interconnected Chemostats, Shiuan-Wu Chang
Theses
It is known from the literature that out of any number of microbial populations competing purely and simply in an environment which is homogeneous and has time invariant inputs (e.g. in an ideal chemostat) only one population can survive in a steady state under any conditions. However it has been proven possible for two competitors to coexist in two interconnected chemostats, which indicates that spatial heterogeneities may lead to coexistence of pure and simple competitors. The present study investigates whether the spatial heterogeneities created by three interconnected bioreactors may lead to a mixed culture (i.e. coexistence) of three pure and …

An Analysis Of Wet-On-Wet Trapping Using The Walker And Fetsko Ink Transfer Equation, Sam Powell
Theses
In this thesis the Walker and Fetsko ink transfer equation was used as an analytic tool to determine how the physical properties of the transfer surface change from printing on unprinted paper to overprinting on another wet ink film. The equation has three parameters, b, k, and f, which indicate what is happening in the nip of the press during the moment of impression. Parameter b represents the maximum absorptive capacity of the paper, parameter k is highly reflective of printing smoothness, and parameter f represents the fraction of free ink film which splits to the paper surface. The I.G.T. …

Theses
A monodisperse silver bromide emulsion was surface sensitized with potassium hexachloroiridate (III). The rate of sensitization and maximum photographic sensitivity were determined at different sensitization conditions. The effects of silver ion concentration (pAg), length of sensitization, and the presence of the thiocyanate onion during sensitization were defined. The highest gain of sensitivity of an Iridium sensitized emulsion over an unsensltized emulsion was 0.43 log H units at pAg 9 after 30 minutes of after-ripening at 70 C. The highest gain of sensitivity of an iridium + thiocyanate sensitized emulsion over an unsensltized emulsion was 0.55 log H units at pAg …
Land Cover Classification Of Landsat Thematic Mapper Images Using Pseudo Invariant Feature Normalization Applied To Change Detection, Tim Hawes
Theses
A radiometric normalization technique for compensating illumination and atmospheric differences between multi-temporal images should allow classification of the images with a single classification algorithm. This allows a simpler approach to land cover change detection. Land cover classification of Landsat Thematic Mapper Imagery with and without Pseudo Invariant Feature Normalization was performed to demonstrate the effect on classification and change detection accuracy. A post-classification change detection method using two separate classification algorithms, one for each date, was performed as a baseline comparison. Land cover classification using one classification algorithm was attempted with and without gain and offset correction to serve as …

Deuterium Isotope Effects On In Vitro Dealkylation Of 1,1-Dimethylhydrazine And 1,1-Dimethylnitrosamine Via Hepatic Enzymes, Robert Sloane
Theses
Boiling 1,1-dimethylnitrosamine or unsymmetrical dimethylnitrosamine several times with 25% NaOD in D2O promoted the complete exchange of the nitrosamine’s alpha protons for deuterium. The deuterated nitrosamine was reduced by LiAlH4, in anhydrous diethyl ether to the corresponding 1,1-dimethylhydrazine-d6. An in-process production of the oxalate salt was necessary due to the air sensitivity of the free base hydrazine. After recrystallization from absolute ethanol and extensive drying, the oxalate salt was evaluated for purity by mixed melting point, high performance liquid chromatography and thin layer chromatography. When protonated hydrazine-oxalate salt (mp=146 °C) was mixed with a sample of the exchanged hydrazine salt …

A Prognostication Of Just-In-Time Efficacy In American Manufacturing, Mark L. Kahan
A Prognostication Of Just-In-Time Efficacy In American Manufacturing, Mark L. Kahan
Theses
"Just-in-time" is a Japanese philosophy of business management which has as its ideal the complete elimination of waste in the process of adding value to a product. Some experts have contended that its basis is not cultural, but technical, and is thus applicable to American manufacturing concerns. After an initial exploration of economics and productivity concepts, and of U.S. logistics, inventory, and purchasing practices, the matter of Just-in-time will be addressed, both theoretically and in terms of Japanese business and labor relationships and culture. Then, based upon a case study consisting of observations made at a traditional American manufacturer, this …

A study was conducted to compare the mid-frequency line edge noise algorithms of Jim Hamerly and Yigal Gur. Comparisons were made to determine which algorithm correlated best with the psychophysical defect known as raggedness. Tests were conducted on "standard" observers using a series of test images with varying amounts of edge noise. A master image was produced photographically and ensuing images generated with random error using electrophotographic processes. Scanning of the images to determine output metric values was done on a Zeiss microdensitometer. It was found that with electrophotographic prints, the Hamerly algorithm has a correlation coefficient of .83. Determination …
Database Recovery, Kim L. Emanuel
Database Recovery, Kim L. Emanuel
Theses
Recovery techniques are an important aspect of database systems. They are essential to ensure that data integrity is maintained after any type of failure occurs. The recovery mechanism must be designed so that the availability and performance of the system are not unacceptably impacted by the recovery algorithms running during normal execution. On the other hand, enough information must be stored so that the database can be restored or transactions backed out in a reasonable amount of time. Concepts, techniques, and problems associated with database recovery will be presented in this thesis. The recovery issues for both centralized and distributed …
