A Low-Noise Ccd Electrometer Using Buried-Channel Ldd Nmosfets, Eric G. Stevens Jun 1987

A Low-Noise Ccd Electrometer Using Buried-Channel Ldd Nmosfets, Eric G. Stevens

Theses

A iow-noise, CCD electrometer is presented that makes use of devices akin to buried-channel, LDD NMOS FETs. Self-aligned source and drain contacts are used that result in high performance and a simplified process. These devices were fabricated in a scaled, buried-channel NMOS CCD process without adding any process complexity. In spite of the higher capacitances associated with the scaled process (higher levels of doping and thinner gate oxides) in which this device was constructed, the input referred voltage responsivity or sensitivity of this electrometer is 15 /xV/electron, the highest reported to date. This high responsivity leads to superior noise performance. …

A Mathematical Model Of Photopolymerization In A Batch Reactor, Jyh-Yao Li May 1987

A Mathematical Model Of Photopolymerization In A Batch Reactor, Jyh-Yao Li

Theses

A mathematical model of a photo initiated additionpolymerization in a batch reactor was developed.

The model considered initiation, propagation and, termination to simulate the addition polymerization process, The model has the advantage that the concentration of any particular n-mer may be calculated without calculating all of its precursors. Other methods do not have this property. An analytical solution to the model for the photopolymerization of styrene was solved. The calculations were run on a VAX 8800 computer and the results were then compared with the experimental results. The calculated results fitted the experimental results to some extent. Effects from the …

Process Hazard Review For Drug Development, Rudolph R. Schwarz May 1987

Process Hazard Review For Drug Development, Rudolph R. Schwarz

Theses

The development of drugs has become increasingly complex, requiring the use of a wide variety of pharmaceutical actives and isolated intermediates, a majority of which are not always completely characterized with respect to their hazard potential. This can present a source of potential exposure to those who handle these substances during initial drug development, manufacturing of the drug active and ultimately the finished pharamaceutical product. It is, therefore, essential that safety and health information be documented and communicated during the entire drug development process.

The need for application of process hazard review techniques to the development of new drug materials …

Studies Directed Toward Beta-Cyclodextrin And Capped Beta-Cyclodextrin Mimics Of Alpha-Chymotrypsin, Preston Marlon Canzius

Theses

Molecular mechanics calculations were used to investigate beta-cyclodextrin and capped beta-cyclodextrin as models for the active site of alpha-chymotrypsin. The Amber molecular mechanics force field was used to investigate the effect that addition of the caps has on the conformation of the beta-cyclodextrin macrocycle.

The RMS module of Amber was used to calculate differences in position between the atoms of the minimized mimics and those of the X-ray crystal structure. The deviation in position of the atoms of the minimized capped beta-cyclodextrin macrocycle was found to be larger than that of the minimized beta-cyclodextrin, indicating that the caps do affect …

Management Training In Small Business, Harry L. Bargholz May 1987

Management Training In Small Business, Harry L. Bargholz

Theses

Human Resources Professionals are often faced with the issue of "the need for and usefulness of management training." In addition, small business people believe that the needed training is unwanted and, in somecases, impossible to deliver. On the other side of the issue, training supporters point to the need for knowledge, the constant obsolescence of learned skills and the highly competitive nature of the marketplace.

The argument continues that whereas managers in larger firms may be able to afford numerous in-house training programs or be able to send employees to assorted workshops and conferences, the manager in a small enterprise …

This event emits acoustic, optical and radio frequency energy, and can be detected by measuring any of these radiations. In the present thesis, Radio Interference Voltage (RIV) technique was …

Method Of Moments Analysis Of Very Thin Wires Using The Mini-Numerical Electromagnetics Code, Douglas F. Stolarz May 1987

Method Of Moments Analysis Of Very Thin Wires Using The Mini-Numerical Electromagnetics Code, Douglas F. Stolarz

Theses

The analysis of thin wire antenna systems in the presence of a conducting ground plane is an important engineering problem. This thesis presents an analysis of wire radiators using the method of moments as implemented in the Mini-Numerical Electromagnetics Code (MININEC). Due to singularities in the formulation, MININEC yields inaccurate results for very thin wires. This code was modified by introducing filament currents for very thin wire structures thereby eliminating inaccuracy due to the treatment of singularities.

The modified code was tested on a monopole over a perfect ground, symmetrical and asymmetrical dipoles in free space, and inverted L and …

On Weakly Coupled Hyperbolic And Parabolic Partial Differential Equations Arising In Chemical Engineering Problems, Zhifeng Zhang May 1987

On Weakly Coupled Hyperbolic And Parabolic Partial Differential Equations Arising In Chemical Engineering Problems, Zhifeng Zhang

Theses

Many of the mathematical models arising in dynamical chemical processes are systems of weakly coupled hyperbolic and parabolic partial differential equations with constant coefficients. It is shown in this paper that this kind of systems of partial differential equations can be treated using generalizations of Green's functions. The Green's function is completely defined, including all boundary conditions, for systems with nonselfadjoint operators as well as those which are selfadjoint. The Green's functions can be expressed in terms of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the operator and the adjoint operator when they can be obtained. We develop a method based on higher …

Geometric And Enthalpic Calculational Study Of Monosubstituted Cyclobutanes ; Attempted Synthesis Of 1,3-Diphenyl-2,2,4,4-Tetrafluorobicyclo [1.1.0] Butane, Jose Luis Reyesgavilan May 1987

Geometric And Enthalpic Calculational Study Of Monosubstituted Cyclobutanes ; Attempted Synthesis Of 1,3-Diphenyl-2,2,4,4-Tetrafluorobicyclo [1.1.0] Butane, Jose Luis Reyesgavilan

Theses

The work undertaken in this thesis is in two parts. In the first, the structure and heat of formation of substituted cyclobutanes were studied via the computer program MMII using an IBM PCXT personal computer with a math co-processor chip. Structurally, a trend was seen to be followed in which bulkier substituents were pushed away from any steric interaction with the ring. This was accomplished by having the latter alter its puckering angle, C2C1C4 angle, HCX angle, and to a smaller extent, the bond lengths immediately adjacent to the substituted carbon atom. This results demonstrated that the ring was very …

Stress Analysis Of A Stepped Shaft With A Keyway, Irfan Hussain Sabir May 1987

Stress Analysis Of A Stepped Shaft With A Keyway, Irfan Hussain Sabir

Theses

A stress concentration case which is encountered in practice more than any other is the shoulder fillet. Shafts, axles, spindles, rotors etc., usually involve, in each case, a number of diameters connected by shoulders with fillet radii and very often it is necessary for a keyway to be near a shoulder. The objective in this study is to analyse the stresses in a shouldered shaft with a keyway subjected to an axial tensile load and to study the dependence of the keyway-end stresses on the distance between the shoulder fillet and the keyway end. This is done by performing a …
