Reliability Of Existing Bridge Inspection And Evaluation Procedures, Leroy R. Klouser
Reliability Of Existing Bridge Inspection And Evaluation Procedures, Leroy R. Klouser
Theses
In general, bridge inspection is subjective since visual observation and the basic inspection tools cannot reveal hidden structural deterioration, such as corrosive and delaminated rebars embedded in the concrete. Based on the NJDOT SI&A report, a scale (9 to 0) is used in rating five bridge components. This approach seems reasonable, since the time span, manpower and cost are limited throughout the counties of New Jersey. On the other hand, based on the scaling system, the SI&A reports can vary depending upon the exposed surface appearance and the experience of the bridge inspector.

Development Of A Low Cost Pc Based Robot Vision System, Raghunandan Jadhav
Development Of A Low Cost Pc Based Robot Vision System, Raghunandan Jadhav
Theses
There has been a continued. interest in utilizing machine vision systems for robot guidance applications. Commercial vision systems can be programmed to give information about the parts in the robot work area and this information can be used by the robot computer to guide the robot. In most applications, however, the vision information cannot be easily integrated with the robot control language. This thesis considers implementation of part identification routines directly into a robot guidance language. This makes all the complicated machine vision algorithms transparent to the user and allows him to treat higher level vision functions as an extension …

Morphological Analysis Of Microvessels Using High Voltage Electron Microscopy (Hvem), Ibm Personal Computer And 3-D Reconstruction Software, Wieslaw Slawomir Krajewski
Theses
The mesenteric arterioles (outer diameter < 100 µ) from a normotensive and a hypertensive dog were perfused in situ, excised, post-fixed and embedded in Spurr medium block. Thick serial cross sections (0.5 µ) of the vessels were obtained from hand formed mesas and placed on Formvar coated slot grids.
The cross sections were subjected to High Voltage Electron Microscopy (HVEM) and five or more electronmicrographs were taken to cover the individual cross sections. The prints of electronmicrographs were linearly enlarged (3X) and made into photomontages of sections. The membrane contours in the montages were traced on transparent overlays, producing polygons which in turn were traced on GTCO digitizing pad. All polygons were labeled, color coded and stored in IBM PC's filing system. The vessels were reconstructed from up to 100 whole cross sections and subjected to cell compartmentalvolume analysis. The reconstructed images can be …
8085 In-Circuit Emulator For Ibm Personal Computer, Joong Bin Lee
8085 In-Circuit Emulator For Ibm Personal Computer, Joong Bin Lee
Theses
As microprocessor-based systems become gradually larger, the developers need good tools for debugging the hardware and software. The emulators for the IBM Personal Computer using an RS-232 serial port are available in the market. But it takes quite a long time to download the user file to the memory of the emulator or the target system. This emulator is an add-on card dedicated for IBM Personal Computers. The emulator communicates with the IBM Personal Computer through the I/O channels on the mother board instead of the serial port, so its speed is much faster than that of the serial port. …
Use Of Latex Modified Concrete For Repairs And Overlays, Chen-Hoang Lo
Use Of Latex Modified Concrete For Repairs And Overlays, Chen-Hoang Lo
Theses
Latex modified concrete and polymer concrete have been widely used for bridge deck overlays and crack repairs for the past decade. In recent years, many of these repaired structures were found to be defective. The causes of these failures are not clearly confirmed. Some blame the quality of the latex products while manufacturers accuse the contractors of improper placement and/or surface preparation. While most of these failures largely appeared to be debonding and delamination of the overlays, excessive cracks, possibly shrinkage cracks, were also reported in the overlaid LMC.
To evaluate the suitability of using latex modified concrete for crack …
Optimal Design Aspects Of A Unit Treating Hazardous Wastes Via Biodegradation : A Theoretical Approach, Farnaz Saghafi
Optimal Design Aspects Of A Unit Treating Hazardous Wastes Via Biodegradation : A Theoretical Approach, Farnaz Saghafi
Theses
The treatment of wastes via biodegradation is a widely utilized technique in most industries today. The kinetics of biodegradation, in most cases, follow either the Monod (non-inhibitory) or Andrews (also known as Haldane, inhibitory) model as indicated by published experimental data. The present study investigates aspects of the optimal design of a unit treating wastes when the biodegradation kinetics are those mentioned above. The criterion of optimality is the minimum volume achieving a desired conversion under given load conditions.
Two alternatives from the point of view of the number of vessels (one and two), and three alternatives from the operational …

Optimizing Tone Production On A 300 Spot Per Inch Laser Printer, James R. Hamilton
Optimizing Tone Production On A 300 Spot Per Inch Laser Printer, James R. Hamilton
Theses
Digital halftones as output on plain paper are the focus of this study. A new terminology is suggested to allow proper description of digital halftones. The most important of these terms is the use of "addressability" to replace the often misused term "resolution." Also important is the use of the term "spot" rather than "dot" to describe addressability. A means of properly describing digital halftones is suggested to avoid confusion with analog (ie., conventional photographic) halftones. Halftone patterns were created to test the efficiency of different designs at 300 spot per inch addressability on a laser printer. The page description …

Dependence Of Stress And Morphology Of Sputtered Copper Films On Deposition Conditions, Sangki Hong
Theses
In the rapidly developing semiconductor industry, sputter deposition is the most widely used metallization (metal coating) process in chip manufacturing and packaging. Since most sputtered coatings are in a state of stress, understanding the origin of stress is very important. High stress can lead to electrical shorts and mechanical instability in a microelectronic circuit pattern.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the parameters which can be used to control stress in sputtered metal films. We worked with sputtered copper on polyimide (Kapton H) as a film-substrate combination which occurs frequently in the microelectronic packaging industry.
Stress and film …

N-Values And Paper Opacity, Robert Eric Aronson
N-Values And Paper Opacity, Robert Eric Aronson
Theses
The n-value is a factor which allows the Murray-Davies equation to be correctly solved for physical dot area or tint density. This equation becomes known as the Yule-Nielsen equation when the n-value is used.
Many variables affect the value of n; paper characteristics, screen ruling, even the equation variables themselves. The level of solid ink density may have a very significant effect on the n-value. This fact, although suspected, has not been investigated until now.
A study into this variance was undertaken in Appendix II with a method for adjusting the value of n to a standard solid ink density …

Covering Power And Speed Characteristics Of Silver Bromide Core/Shell Emulsions Etched With Sodium Thiosulfate Solution, Julie C. Bishop
Theses
A pure silver bromide 0.55µm core/shell emulsion of high internal sensitivity and low surface response was evaluated for its covering power and speed characteristics when the shell was removed in a 0.05M sodium thiosulfate etching bath following exposure. The etched core/shell emulsion was chemically developed and compared with the 0.36µm AgBr core alone at approximately constant developed silver weight per unit area at maximum density. It was observed that the etched core/shell emulsion displayed ~0.44 Log H units greater speed than the core alone when both were examined at approximately the same covering power.

Where Have All The Nurses Gone? The Continuing Saga Of The Nursing Shortage, Deborah R. Mcfarland
Theses
This paper examines the issues which have encompassed the nursing profession for many years, thus making it a difficult career in which to attract and retain members. The nursing shortage, many say, has returned, but did it really go away? The shortage experienced in the 1970's was coupled with high admission rates and high employee turnover causing a shortage of nurses, particularly experienced ones. Then, hospitals faced the emergence of the federal government making major changes in reimbursement to hospitals. This caused a major shift in the cash flow system of hospitals. Also, costs were no longer reimbursed on a …
A Christian Counseling Handbook For The Lay Counselors, Debra K. Olson-Demmie
A Christian Counseling Handbook For The Lay Counselors, Debra K. Olson-Demmie
Theses
Counseling psychology advocates a position of neutrality where religious issues are concerned. This position appears benign at first glance, but upon closer examination we find that psychology has been strongly influenced by modern humanistic thought. In his book Psychology as Religion: The Cult of Self-Worship, Paul Vitz (1977) states, "Psychology has become as religion, in particular, a form of secular humanism based on the worship of self" (p. 9). Vitz alleges that humanistic psychology is being practiced as an anti-Christian religion.
Christian mental health and pastoral care providers need to be alert to the infiltration of humanistic thought into psychological …
